Principal’s

Message

The end of this week marks the half way point of

term but unfortunately for students and staff the

workload in Term 4 is distributed heavily towards the

end of term. Exams are beginning and reports are just

around the corner so students need to keep focused. I

am already in counselling because community

members realise how I suffer during the school breaks

missing the students terribly but not as much as my

important administrative responsibilities. Only five

weeks left to account for the extra toilet paper usage

this year. I need to use my time wisely.

This week non-core subject exams begin. Students

should not confuse non-core with non-important and

try their best. Remembrance Day, P&C hot chip and

scallop day and Volunteer’s afternoon tea are Friday.

Volunteers allow this school to function. Without

people willing to help out many activities and

classroom programs could not function. This school

always appreciates and recognises volunteers and our

afternoon is just one way of saying thankyou.

As Principal I cannot accept student poor behaviour at

any time but especially not in Term 4 because students

have had three terms to understand this school’s

expectations and culture. I could not be clearer on this

point. Recently I have informed three students that

they will not be attending the secondary excursion

because their behaviour is not at an acceptable

standard. Others are in danger of the same fate. The

behaviour of students at this school is excellent, the

best I have seen in 23 years with the Department and I

am determined to both maintain and improve this

standard. This school records all incidents of poor

behaviour both electronically and in paper form, so we

have detailed records fostering excellent

accountability. I regularly check the data base to

monitor student behaviour. If I decide a student is not

to be invited on the excursion I will have the evidence

to support this decision and it is a waste of time

debating one incident or teacher because it is the

number of incidents that is the problem.

Last week I had a parent state in front of her children

that they must respect the teacher because they are

giving them the skills to be successful. This is

refreshing because it shows to me the value of

effective partnerships between school and family for

overcoming problems quickly and effectively. An

unfortunate aspect of modern teaching is the increase

in children that are born saints, or do not have

parents, they have friends that just happen to have

been involved in their birth. Two things I am sure of;

negotiation with children should be part of parenting

and it is usually effective but at times children need to

be told what to do. The second is, children lie or give

their version of the truth. Yes they lie. Often parents

including myself because of our love for our children

or a social need to have perfect children try to find

external reasons for children’s behaviour. All children

can be naughty or rude because testing the boundaries

is part of growing up and establishing their identity.

Indeed, if children especially in adolescence are not

testing the boundaries I would be looking for a

developmental delay. Testing the boundaries for males

usually stops around 65.

At times disputes between families occur in

communities. This has occurred since Noah played for

the first fifteen for Jerusalem. What happens in the

community is essentially none of my business unless it

is brought into this school, or places your child in

danger. As Principal I do not take sides in family

disputes or comment on events in the community

(some people say I will never fit into Trundle) but

students and parents should be very clear that I will

act on behaviours that occur in this school. Behaviour

in the community is a police or family matter and it

should not be brought into a school or this wonderful

school be judged by the actions of few. Facebook also

is not a social media forum that is beyond the law.

Students and parents should realise that comments

involving vilification of another person are not dealt

with only at a school level. I pass these comments

onto the police as it is an offence to use an electronic

device to intimidate another person.

The school is currently in the process of recruiting a

primary school teacher for 2017. We have had an

amazing response to our advertisement with over 30

enquires to date. This is an indication that this town

and this school have a good reputation across the

state. Hopefully the successful applicant will live locally

and contribute to the town culture and spend lots of

money in local businesses. It is not true that one of the

criteria was to support the Sharks.

Next year at this stage we are losing two students and

gaining six. These are good numbers but we still need

more to maintain our current staffing and programs.

The state system staffing formula requires numbers to

be submitted by December 20 so if any family is

considering enrolling their child in this school please

place an expression of interest into the front office as

one student could affect staffing numbers in relation to

losing a staff member. I am hoping for a few surprise

enrolments at the start of next year.

The murder of teacher Stephanie Scott was

compounded by the tragic death last week of her father

by a falling tree. These events often make us question

this world. Louis Armstrong said it is a wonderful world

and I believe he is still right despite the events that

occur. We might need to remind ourselves on

occasions but we should never have to remind our

children. Fairies still live in the garden for children and

beyond the horizon is a magic world if you allow them

to believe. Try not to let the adult world crush your

children’s imagination and dreams because I believe

childhood is getting shorter to the massive detriment of

children. One aspect that did upset me is Stephanie’s

killer appeal of the severity of his sentence. Give me a

break!

A worrying aspect of our modern world is the

racialisation of young men to kill in the name of religion.

Thankfully in Trundle the worse we have is Tommy

Morgan Jnr who supports the Melbourne Storm but our

children do not only live in Trundle they are citizens of

the world. The ironic aspect of last week’s arrests is

that these young men came to Australia to take

advantage of the gifts of this great country but went

overseas to fight in an impoverished dysfunctional

country and I am not talking about America. Islam does

not support violence in its doctrine but these people

use religion as an excuse to kill innocent people in this

country. It really is a big job being a parent trying to

keep kids safe but not make them anxious about their

world.

Last week I was talking to a parent and she mentioned

that she tells her child it is alright to be different. What

a wonderful way of combatting bullying. The term

bullying is often thrown around when often it is just an

isolated incident of name calling. Bullying is systematic

and continual, not a one off event. Twenty three years

of teaching has lead me to the conclusion that bullies

are not tough. They might be physically stronger or

more verbally aggressive but mentally and emotionally

they are usually weak. This is why they need to drag

another down because usually they do not have the

capacity to rise up. If children are confident in their

ability and right to be different it takes away the power

of the bully. Anyway why does every person need to fit

a label or image?

Last week was challenging but reminded me again what

a wonderful country we live in. The Melbourne Cup

Carnival attracts hundreds of thousands of people to

Flemington Race Course. The majority of this crowd

lose their money and get full of giggle juice and there

were only nine people arrested. More people are

thrown out of a Southon family Christmas function. I

also think New South Wales should look at the fine

example of Victoria with a public holiday for the grand

final and a horse race. Victoria must be the most

Australian of all states.

Pictured is Benjamin Strudwick who has received

the Principal’s Award for consistent effort and excellent

manners.

Another great day in Trundle

Student Absences

If your child is away for any period of time the school

needs to be notified each day that they are away and

within 7 days.

i.e. Your child is sick on Monday.

You should ring and notify the school that

our child is away. Your child then continues to be away for the next couple of

days. You still need to notify the school each day that

your child is away.

Please be aware that even when you notify the school,

whether it be a sick or leave day, it still goes against your

child’s attendance rate, which is harvested from our school

by Departmental Officers.

3/4/5/6 Excursion

Last week 32 students from

years 3/4/5/6 went to Sydney and Bathurst for their major excursion. All the students had a fabulous 3

days away. They experienced a range of sites and activities that they may never have the opportunity to

do again. They walked across the Harbour Bridge, around the Opera House, saw The Three Sisters,

experienced the historic Hartley village and spent some time in The Rocks Museum. The highlight of the

Sydney trip was the Hyde Park Barracks where the students experienced convict life by being given

convict names, shirts and rations for dinner. They were then able to experience games that the convicts

would have played before going off to bed on the third storey of the barracks in rows of hammocks! All

the student thoroughly enjoyed the experience of sleeping in a hammock!

On Thursday we travelled to the Bathurst Goldfields after visiting a court house and church in Hartley.

They were given a fabulous dinner and the evening entertainment of campfire games. The next day the

students were entertained by a fabulous guide who described gold mining in the 1800’s. The students

were able to experience family life in the goldfields including colonial games, mud brick making, damper

making and to finish the tour with gold panning!

What an amazing excursion! It was a pleasure to take the students on this excursion. They were courteous, appreciative and enthralled by each and every activity. The students and teachers would like

to thank Mr Tim Taylor and Mr John Grady for accompanying the group on this experience. Their

help was invaluable. The students would also like to thank Mrs Gray for the many hours of organisation

and preparation that it took to ensure the excursion was a success.

Kindergarten/Year 6 Transition This week will be the fifth week of Kindergarten/Year 6 Transition sessions that will run throughout the

term. This year the sessions will run on Tuesdays from 8:55am – 11:20am. This will allow the Pre-

schoolers and Year 6 to engage in some fantastic activities to ensure the transition from both

Preschool and Primary School is a smooth and enjoyable experience.

All classes in primary will be moving up into the next group for these sessions. It is a great way for the

students to practise being in a new class.

Year 3/4 Trundle Library History day This Wednesday at 10am, Year 3/4 will be attending a history session at the Trundle Library.

During the term we have been completing a unit on Trundle and the past so we have many questions

ready for our expert from the Parkes Library.

Gymnastics sessions This Thursday, 10th November and next Thursday, 17th November all K-6 will have the opportunity to

experience some gymnastics with a qualified instructor. The students are asked to wear sports

uniform on both these Thursdays.

Assembly This Friday, 11th November we will have a K-6 Assembly at 12:10pm in the library. Please come along. The students thoroughly enjoy hosting

these assemblies and love to show classroom work.

Sun Safe Policy This term is a No Hat No Play term. Students MUST wear a wide brimmed hat.

This means that if they do not have a hat, they cannot participate in any outdoor

activities including lunch time play. We keep a small selection of spare hats for those

students who accidently forget their hats. These hats are washed regularly but are not

to be used every day by the same students. We will endeavour to call parents to let them know their child has forgotten their hat so that it can be found. Please make sure

you put your child’s name inside their hat.

K-2 homework Due to testing there will be

no literacy homework this week.

Thank you, Ms Downes

K-6 Swimming For Sport K/1/2 will be going to the pool for Sport this Friday. Please ensure you have returned your

permission note to the front office.

Please ensure your children have swimmers, a towel, sunscreen, a swim shirt and $2 for entry to

the pool unless you have a season ticket. We will be walking back to school at the end of sport unless

we have been notified of alternative arrangements.

Secondary

This week sees our Year 7-10 students

commence their non-core examinations. The

students have been issued with an exam timetable

for both Week 5 and Week 6. The timetables are also in this newsletter. Students will be undertaking

these exams during their normal periods. They will

need to catch up on exams if they are absent for

any of them. Hopefully the students have been

making use of the study packs they were issued.

We wish all the students the best for their exams.

This Wednesday we have some of our Hospitality

students heading over to Peak Hill for a practical

day. These days are an integral part of the VET

subjects our students study and gives them invaluable hands on experience. Thank you to Ms

Rowlands who will be taking the students to this

day.

On Friday our 40 over cricket side are back in

action against Dunedoo. We have recently had

some very strong results in both forms of the game

we participate in. Hopefully we will see this

continue. However, we would also like to

congratulate the team on their sportsmanship.

Thanks to Ms Rowlands for her supervision of the

team.

Last Friday our students, who will be commencing

study with the Western Access Program, had an

orientation day at Trangie. Several of the students

commented to me on their return how valuable

they found the day, and it was apparent that they

are quite excited to commence their study next

year. I have also had reports of their excellent

behaviour and engagement during the day. Well

done to the students and thank you to Ms Ranger

for taking them for the day.

This Friday we will be attending the towns’

Remembrance Day Ceremony. The students will be

walking to the hall at 10.50am. On our return we

will have our recess which may mean our period 3

and 4 will be slightly shorter than normal.

Also on Friday afternoon the school will be hosting

a “Thank you” afternoon tea for all our volunteers

for 2016. We are particularly thankful for all those

who assist us in making our school community so

productive and we look forward to seeing those

people on Friday so we can thank you personally.

As always if there are any questions with regards to

any Secondary matters please contact me at school.

40 Over Cricket News Last Monday the 40 over cricket team travelled to Tullamore to play in Round 1 of the competition.

Tullamore chose to field first in the windy, cold weather. The highlights were Brodi Gavin-Rossiter

opening the batting and scoring the highest and fastest score of the match, 90 runs. Brad Watt wasn’t

far behind him scoring 87 runs before getting bowled out. Wills Wells held the tail up scoring 24 runs

not out. Trundle scored a total of 255 runs in 32 overs which was a fantastic team effort. Tullamore went in to bat and it was made evident early on that Trundle had more experience. Their

motivation and enthusiasm in the field was great to watch. Wills Wells was bowling on point and

bowled 7 people out and 1 out for LBW. A great personal effort which his team mates were happy to

be a part of.

Trundle won by 236 runs and progress to Round 2. A big thank you to Mrs Morgan for organising the

day, Miss Rowlands for driving and scoring and Luke Watt for umpiring the match.
