MODES OF OPERATION

Sleep ModeSleep mode allows a TruCore™ tool to extend battery life indefinitely (up to 10 years) when in storage. TruCore™ enters sleep mode if it remains in Standby Mode for 4 hours. TruCore™ is not able to communicate with the handheld or perform any functions in this mode. TruCore™ will automatically switch to Standby Mode from Sleep Mode if subjected to any vibration. To wake up TruCore™ from Sleep Mode, strongly shake the tool.

Standby ModeIn the standby mode, TruCore™ is ready to start running an orientation. TruCore™ automatically enters this mode when shaken in sleep mode, after a successful orientation or after TruCore™ has been reset. It will automatically switch from Standby Mode to Sleep Mode if it remains in Standby Mode for more than 4 hours.

Running ModeTruCore™ takes orientation measurements in the Running Mode. TruCore™ will enter this mode from Standby Mode when it is commanded to turn on by the handheld.

Orientation ModeIn Orientation Mode, TruCore™ flashes its LEDs to indicate the correct core orientation to the driller. TruCore™ enters this mode when commanded by the handheld to FIND ORI. TruCore™ will return to standby mode once the correct orientation is confirmed or the tool is reset.

INITIAL SETUP

Tip: Order two extra inner tube adapters to prevent downtime when worn or damaged. Also, order other adapter sizes if you will be running other inner tube sizes e.g. BQTK and LTK60 adapters for a B size tool (See Chapter 3 Maintenance – Spare Parts).

Step 1: Installing TruCore™ Place the inner tube assembly on a bench.

Remove the inner tube cap by unthreading it from the spindle bushing on one end and the inner tube on the other.

Thread the integrated grease cap side of tool onto spindle bushing of head assembly.

Thread the inner tube adapter onto the tool (if not pre-assembled).

Check the inner tube adapter for the check valve body and ball. If not pres-ent, locate the components and install.

Thread the inner tube onto the inner tube adapter.

Wait until setup is complete before sending inner tube assembly downhole.

Symptom Core mark does not line up with previous sample.

Causes: 1. The tool was not initialized prior to sending down the hole. 2. The rig was not stable while marking the core. 3. The core lifter was worn allowing the sample to move in the lifter. 4. The Inner Tube Adapter was not tight causing it to unthread during orientation. 5. The ground was not competent preventing an orientation from being made. 6. Orientation mark lost In removal due to difficulty removing the core.

Solution: 1. Initiate each tool by following the steps outlined in Chapter 2: Marking Core. 2. Keep the rig stable when marking the core (i.e. not spinning). 3. Replace core lifter. 4. Tighten Inner Tube Adapters before using the tool (see Chapter 1: Getting Started). 5. None. 6. When the core is difficult to remove from the lifter, continue the orientation mark along the bottom of the core, before striking the core face to free the sample.

Prevention: 1. Ensure the tool has been initiated by following the steps outlined in Chapter 2: Marking Core. 2. Ensure the rig is stable when marking the core by following the prompts on the handheld. 3. Inspect core lifter condition prior to each run and replace as required. 4. Ensure Inner Tube Adapters are tight before using the tool. 5. None. 6. Ensure the orientation mark is continued along the core exterior if the mark is likely to be lost during the removal process.

CHAPTER 5: MAINTENANCE

The TruCore™ tool is powered by a non-rechargeable lithium battery. When a tool is turned on to Running Mode, the tool battery power level is checked automatically. If the handheld displays LOW TOOL BATTERY the tool has approximately 2 weeks of power left. Check to make sure at least two spare batteries are on site. If not, order immediately. The following procedure should be followed each time a battery replacement is required.

REPLACING THE TRUCORE™ TOOL BATTERY

d

a

b

c

Move the TruCore™ tool to a location free of dust, water and dirt.

Clean and dry tool.

Remove inner tube adapter if still installed.

Position the tool horizontally and open the battery cap using the supplied 14mm Allen key. Wipe the threads on both the cap and the tool with a dry cloth to remove any moisture from the threads.

Carefully disconnect the drained battery from the battery connector and properly dispose of it.

Unpack the new battery from its plastic sealing and reconnect the connectors.

Once the new battery is connected to the TruCore™ tool, it will flash rapidly in a single color and power up. Gently insert the battery back into the housing.

Replace the O-rings on the battery cap and apply the included grease.

Re-install battery cap to 55 Nm (40 ft.lbs).

Re-install inner tube adapter.

RECHARGING THE HANDHELDThe handheld is powered by a rechargeable battery that can be recharged on site using the supplied base and either AC or DC charging cable. The handheld will display RECHARGE HANDHELD, when it drops to 33% of a full charge. It will display this message every time its turned on until recharged.

Ensure the appropriate charging cable is connected to the base and either a wall outlet or 12/24V car outlet.

Slide handheld on to charging base. Hold the to display the message BATTERY CHARGING should display on the handheld. The handheld will require four hours to fully charge if allowed to go completely flat or 30 minutes a shift will maintain its charge.

The message BATTERY CHARGED will be displayed on the handheld when charging is complete. Remove the handheld once charged.

Warning: Only use the supplied power adapters. Other power adapters may not regulate correctly and damage the battery and or handheld. Warning: The handheld battery is not field replaceable. Removing the tamper proof screws and opening the case will void the warranty and the renter will be charged for its replacement if damaged.

c

d

Both TruCore™ tools should be rinsed off with fresh water after every shift to limit the build up of potentially corrosive substances.

The communication ports should be cleaned regularly to keep them free from dirt and debris. Avoid using any sharp or abrasive materials that could potentially damage the communication port.

29

CALIBRATION CHECK PROCEDUREIf a tool is suspected of false or incorrect orientation readings, the following cali- bration check procedure can be used to verify functionality:

Place TruCore at the approximate dip angle of the hole as shown. Note: The angle should be less than 85° to ensure accurate results. The tool must be secured at this angle to prevent it from rolling.

Initialize the tool using the procedure outlined in Step 3: Initializing Hand-held and Tools of the Initial Setup section from Chapter 1 (see pg. 8).

Once the tool is turned on, use a paint pen or other visible marking medium to mark the bottom of the TruCore™ body at whichever end is convenient. This mark simulates the downhole position of the core sample in the hole prior to core break.

Ensure the tool remains stable at this position and perform a mark opera-tion (see section Chapter 2: Marking Core).

Place the tool on a horizontal surface and perform Step 3: Orienting the Core from Chapter 2. The red LEDs should align the tool with the down side position previously marked in step c of this procedure.

Repeat steps a through e, with each iteration marking the tool 90° from the previous attempt. Four successive alignments of these marks will confirm the tool is within the calibration limits and is fully functional.
