Honoring Differences

…….Diversity Matters The Secret to Dealing With Diversity…...The first thing to

know about “Diversity” is that it is not (or should not be) a code

word for Affirmative Action. Affirmative Action is not without con-

troversy. It has its ardent supporters... and its critics. But that’s

not what Diversity is about. Each of us certainly is responsible for

our own actions. And our primary responsibility is to recognize

reality...and deal with it appropriately. Thus the Secret: Under-

stand the true nature of the American workforce. ..and the true

meaning of Diversity. The clichéd image of the American popula-

tion (and workforce) is as a melting pot of homogeneous same-

ness—in which people of different genders, races and heritage are

assimilated is incorrect. A far more accurate image is that it is a vari-

ety of unique individuals who are integrated, while maintaining the

special identity of each. Which brings us to the true meaning of Di-

versity

All the ways we are different from (and similar to) others

Our perceptions and opinions about those differences

How we treat people based on those perceptions and opinions.

Diversity is not a social problem to be solved, but a business oppor-

tunity (e.g., an

expanded customer base, a broader source of employee talent, a

more harmonious

workplace) - to be optimized. And it’s not just another fad. Diversity

is the way

things are.

If you have a question about Diversity in the Workplace, please email Marilyn Sadler, JD/PHR, at [email protected] The Diversity Corner segment of this newsletter is the sole view of our expert and may not represent the views of the Evansville-Area Human Resource Associa-tion. Ask an attorney feature! Beginning next month in Chapter Connection we will be featuring an ask the attorney section focusing on employment law questions. Questions will be chosen at random for feature in the newsletter. If you have a question you would like answered, please email Jake Fulcher, JD: [email protected]

annual

golf outing

2010 EHRA Golf Outing The 2009 EHRA Golf Outing is scheduled for Wednesday, July 28, 2010 with a shotgun start at 1:00 p.m. Members and guests are welcome to join us for a “cool” afternoon of fun and fellowship. The outing will be at Eagle Valley Golf Course on Petersburg Road. This is a best ball scramble so you don’t have to be a good golfer to come out and enjoy the sun and fun. Golfers need to be at the course by at least 12:40 p.m. to be ready for the 1:00 p.m. shotgun start. Eagle Valley Golf Course requires soft spikes on all golf surfaces.

If you are unable to join us for the golf, please meet us in the evening for a social hour of dinner. We hope that all members will join us for an excel-lent opportunity to network and socialize with other human resource pro-fessionals and guests.

The golf registration deadline is Friday, July 23rd, in order to match-up foursomes and know the number of golfers. You can register online under the monthly event calendar at www.ehranet.org or by using the form be-low.
