Since our story last month aboutthe availability of synthetic drugs suchas K2 and Spice, some importantchanges have come about, both na-tionally and locally.

Our local law enforcement is dili-gent in efforts to stop stores from sell-ing these products. On June 22nd,Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco un-veiled a new sticker program to informcitizens about synthetic drug-freestores to help reduce the sales of thesedangerous products in the community.Sheriff Nocco was joined by state andcounty leaders at the Suncoast MobileGas Station, 16055 S.R. 52 in Land O'Lakes, for the unveiling of a newsticker program that will alert cus-tomers about stores that do not sellsynthetic drugs. Event attendees in-cluded Senator Mike Fasano, Repre-sentative Richard Corcoran,Representative Will Weatherford, andmembers of the Pasco County Com-mission, Pasco County School Board, and the Pasco Alliance for Substance

Abuse Prevention (ASAP). The Sun-coast Mobile gas station and conven-ience store was the first to receive asticker for their door or window thatreads in part, “Synthetic Drugs Kill -These Drugs Are NOT Sold Here”To receive a sticker, store owners ormanagers must sign a letter of agree-ment provided by the Sheriff's Officestating that they will not sell the items.

Recently the House and Senateagreed on legislation to control 26 syn-thetic drugs under the Controlled Sub-stances Act. These drugs include thosecommonly found in products marketedas "K2" and "Spice." And, on July 12,President Obama signed the SyntheticDrug Abuse Prevention Act of 2012into law as part of S. 3187, the Foodand Drug Administration Safety andInnovation Act, providing a criticalboost to our nation's efforts to addressthe threat of synthetic drugs. The leg-islation bans synthetic compoundscommonly found in synthetic mari-juana (K2, Spice), synthetic stimulants

(Bath Salts), and hallucinogens, byplacing them under Schedule I of theControlled Substances Act.

Look for this sticker to know youare supporting stores that care aboutconsumers.

Students Instrumental in GettingSidewalk Constructed

Four years ago, several students ina service learning class called Lead thePack, an elective class taught by Cyn-thia Tehan at Seven Springs MiddleSchool led an effort to get sidewalksconstructed on busy Little Rd. in Trin-ity along the Mitchell High and SevenSprings Middle School route. Three ofthose students, Zoe Pappas, DanielleKuehner, and Chelsi Macklin havegraduated from Seven Springs MiddleSchool (they are attending the adjoin-ing Mitchell High) but their effortshave now paid off as the project theyinitiated years ago is nearing comple-tion.

For the past several months, PascoCounty has been installing a shared-use path, wider than a sidewalk, sobikes can be ridden on it. The pathwill be located on the west side of Lit-tle Rd. and span south from the inter-section area of S.R. 54 and Little Rd.to the intersection of Little Rd. and

Trinity Blvd., covering about 3,200 ft. The idea for the sidewalks came

about when students first noticed thattheir classmates had to walk in thegrass on the side of the road to get tonearby shopping centers, medical of-fices, and neighborhoods near theirschools. Then on Jan. 19, 2011, 15-year-old Mitchell High student CierraMamonoff was crossing Little Rd. dur-ing school hours when she was struckby a car and killed. Because of thatPappas thinks that students startedpaying more attention to needs forsafety improvements on Little Rd. Sothe students enlisted aid at a meetingof the Pasco County MetropolitanPlanning Organization, which consistsof county commissioners and repre-sentatives from the county's munici-palities. Progress came bit by bit, withfunding approved for the project andmoney requested from the federal SafeRoutes to Schools program to pay forthe effort. The Suncoast News re-ported that the project is receiving$760,248 from the Florida Depart-ment of Transportation.

Last month at a breakfast held atSeven Springs Middle School followedby a ribbon-cutting ceremony, the new8-foot-wide “shared use” sidewalk thatruns along the west side of Little Rd.between S.R. 54 and Trinity Blvd. wascelebrated. Additionally, there is an ad-joining sidewalk to the west alongMitchell Blvd. to Trinity Oaks Blvd.“The homeowners associations aroundhere were not able to get the side-walks, but our kids did,” said SevenSprings teacher Dorothy Taylor.

Pasco School District Superin-tendent Heather Fiorentino praisedthe students. So did commissionersHenry Wilson and Jack Mariano. StateSenator Mike Fasano said to an audi-ence of students and parents, ”Regard-less of what age, you must getinvolved. And not only get involved,"he emphasized, "but advocate forwhat they believe in. That’s what thesekids did."

Two of the original Lead the Packstudents, Kuehner and Pappas, now11th graders, along with 8th gradersMatthew Sandoval and Luccas Borges, came back for their moment of sharedtriumph and accepted congratulationsfrom the audience at the ceremony.“Four years seems like a long time, butthat’s how government works some-

times,” Fiorentino told them. “This isa valuable lesson you will take on withyou for the rest of your lives.”

Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center –Convenient & Caring

By Dara Tucker

Since 2006, Wendy Watson,D.V.M. has been welcoming fourlegged friends and their faithful ownersto Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center onTrinity Boulevard, in front of the Trin-ity community Foxwood. Its conven-ient location, beautiful yet pet friendly

atmosphere, and quality of care, makeit an ideal veterinarian, boarding andgrooming facility.

Dr. Watson received her degreefrom the College of Veterinarian Medi-cine at Auburn University, and her un-dergraduate degree at Murray StateUniversity in Kentucky. After graduat-ing Dr. Watson was a veterinarian in St.Petersburg for 12 years before shesearched for an area to open her ownpet wellness center.

I asked Dr. Watson why she chosethe Trinity area when opening her ownbusiness and she explained, “I wanted alocation that would provide theamount of traffic that Trinity Boulevarddoes, and also be part of a growingcommunity. Within the first week ofopening, new clients were coming inwith their pets. The residents in thearea really support local businesses, andright away we became a local vet. Welove our clients and wouldn’t be herewithout them. We try our best to meeteveryone’s needs, and are thankful tobe growing with the community.”

Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Centeris a full service companion animal hos-pital with a very comfortable, largewaiting area that has doors that lead di-rectly to each of the exam rooms. Inaddition to the up-to-date décor, thecleanliness of the whole facility is im-pressive. Their goal is to provide qual-ity veterinary care during your pet’slifetime including routine preventivecare, early detection and treatment ofdisease, and complete medical and sur-gical care as needed.

Dr. Watson and Alicia Rietsma,D.V.M., who joined the center a yearago, use some of the latest technologyin the field. Dr. Watson says that 90percent of all their labs are done in-house. This allows for a very quickturnaround so pets are able to receivetreatment promptly.

Laser therapy, which increasesblood flow and decreases inflammation, has successfully been used at TrinityOaks Pet Wellness Center to ease felinelower urinary tract disease and lickgranulomas (uncontrolled licking, usu-

ally at a joint from a tingling sensationin dogs). Another technological con-venience Trinity Oaks Pet WellnessCenter uses is Vet Source, an on-linepharmacy. Clients can access VetSource directly from Trinity Oaks PetWellness Center’s website, trini-tyoakpwc.com. Clients order medica-tions, prescriptions and Hill’s PetNutrition products on-line, Vet Sourcethen sends a fax to Dr. Watson or Dr.Rietsma for approval, and the productis then shipped directly to your house. What a great idea!

Dawn Reese of Palm Harbor hasbeen bringing her pets to Dr. Watsonfor over nine years. Dawn says, “Dr.Watson is not only kind and caring, buthas a wealth of knowledge. She goesabove-and-beyond to make sure you

understand the diagnosis and options. It feels like our pets are being cared forby an extension of our family.” Hurricane Preparedness

Dr. Watson knows that pets are apart of her clients’ families, and shesuggests micro-chipping pets as part oftheir family hurricane preparation. Shereminds me that in the devastation of ahurricane, if your roof has been torn offand you’ve lost most of your posses-sions, being able to reunite with yourpet brings part of your family togetherduring an already stressful time. TrinityOaks Pet Wellness Center uses the

Home Again brandmicrochip that is in-serted with an injec-tion and designedto not move onceit’s placed. Youthen enroll yourpet’s ID code andcontact informationso when someonefinds your pet andtakes it to an animalclinic or shelter theirmicrochip can bescanned and read. The ID code allowsthe staff to contactand reunite youwith your pet.

Boarding and GroomingIn addition to providing medical

care, Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Centerhas boarding and grooming services. There are 12 kennels and 5 runs, andseparate boarding for cats (which has agreat view of the waiting room to keepthem amused). Dogs are walked multi-ple times a day, and twice a day on Sun-days (there is no pet pick-up onSundays). Dr. Watson says that manyclients choose to have their pets’ annualshots given when they are being

boarded, and if there are everany medical issues they can beaddressed promptly since theclinic is at the same facility.

Grooming services are avail-able weekly on Monday,Wednesday and Saturday byPaula Hoppner, who has been inthe grooming business for over20 years.

Kim Mahoney drives fromSafety Harbor to Trinity to haveher cats cared for at Trinity OaksPet Wellness Center. Kim ex-plains, “I’ve had very serious, complex cat issues such as heartfailure, orthopedic issues; emer-gencies where they’ve been ableto see me right away. Even whenI had to have my 23-year-old catshaved they’ve taken great caregrooming her since she’s so old andfrail. There’s no doubt Dr. Watson hasimproved the quality of my pets’ lives.”

If you’ve been looking for a car-ing, local veterinarian that is able tocare for your pet for the duration oftheir life, you don’t need to travel far.Trinity Oaks Pet Wellness Center onTrinity Boulevard is ready to care foryour pets’ medical, boarding andgrooming needs.

By Dr. Wayne Adams

“Hi Sue. You look a little con-cerned,” said Linda. “What’s on yourmind this morning?”

Responding with a worried tonein her voice, Sue answered, “My son isa senior this year in high school andmy daughter is a junior. Now I amhearing about SAT’s, ACT’s, andPSAT’s. What are these tests? Whyare these tests important? What dothey do? Can I help them get ready insome way? I need to find out. I amreally confused!”

Looking thoughtful for a minute,Linda added, “Now that you mentionit, I have wondered the same thingabout Mike and Susan. Mike will be asophomore, and Susan a freshman, inhigh school. My worry is more aboutthe FCAT. Just yesterday, I heardabout a new ‘End of Course” exam forevery high school course. If a studentdoes not pass the EOC, no matterwhat a student’s grade in the course, that student fails and has to repeat the

class. That’s a little scary. Have youheard anything about this?”

LET’S FIND SOME ANSWERSEvery fall, conversations like this

happen across the country as parentsthink about college admissions, schol-arships, and helping their students dotheir best in high school. Let’s findsome answers about the SAT, ACT,PSAT, FCAT, and EOC. Our conclu-sion will talk more about what you as aparent can do so your student can dotheir best on these examinations.

THE SAT The SAT is a nationally standard-

ized test given seven times a year bythe College Board. Three tests aregiven in the fall, and four in the spring.

The three major test sections areWriting, Critical Reading, and Mathe-matics. Within each section are threeindividual tests, and there is oneunidentified experimental test, for atotal of ten test sections requiringabout four hours of testing time.

Scores range between 200 and 800 foreach section, with a maximum scorefor all three sections of 2400.

These tests are only given at au-thorized testing centers such as desig-nated high schools, require areservation on-line at collegeboard.com, and require a normal fee of$50.00 to take the full test. Resultsare published in a password protectedaccount on the internet, and are alsomailed to the student, three to fourweeks after the test.

The stated purpose of the SAT isto assess a student’s ability to do suc-ceed in college. In other words, it is a“predictive” test. The Col-lege Boardsays there is a definite correlation be-tween scoring levels on the SAT andlater academic success in college.

Most colleges believe this state-ment, so they consider SAT scores se-riously as part of deter-mining whetherto admit a student compared to otherapplications. Normally, the major fac-tors in an admission decision are classstanding, GPA, results on standardized

test(s), quality of essay and writingskills, and distinctive com-munity orother activities.

A student can take the SAT exam-ination as many times as desired. Oneimportant feature is that a student can“pick and choose’ the best score ineach section, and later submit onlythese scores to colleges. The collegewill not know these scores came fromdifferent examinations. Also, there isno time limit currently on when scorescan be counted – meaning a highscore for a ninth grader can be usedwhen that student is a senior.

The next three SAT examinationsare sched-uled for Oct 6th, Nov 3rd,and Dec 1st. Most colleges requirecompleted applications and receipt ofall standardized tests by January 1st,with the University of Florida nor-mally require-ing the full package amonth earlier.THE ACT

The ACT is a nationally standard-ized test given six times a year byAmerican College Testing. Three tests

are given in the fall, and three in thespring. The next exams are on Sept8th, Oct 27th, and Dec 8th.

The four required sections areEnglish, Mathematics, Reading, andScience. Essay is an optional fifth sec-tion, which all students should alsotake at the same time because, if a col-lege requires it, the student must re-take a whole examination to do so.

Scores range between 1 - 36 foreach sect-ion. The “composite” is theaverage score of the four required sec-tions, and ranges from 1 – 36.

These tests are only given at au-thorized testing centers such as desig-nated high schools, require areservation on-line at act.org, and re-quire a normal fee of $48.00 to takethe full test. Results are published in apassword pro-tected account on the

internet, and are alsomailed to the stu-dent, 3 - 4 weeksafter the test.

The stated pur-pose of the ACT isto assess a student’scurrent level of edu-cational achieve-ment and theirability to succeed incollege.

SAT AND ACT ARE VERYDIFFERENT

On the surface, it may seem thatthe SAT and ACT are very similar. Infact, they have major differences.

For example: the SAT has differ-ent require-ments for the essay; ismore dependent on vocabulary; is notas dependent on reading passages andevaluations; and math is easier becausemany formulas are given to the stu-dent at the beginning of the math sec-tions, problems are not as advanced, trigonometry is not included, anddoes not have testing in science.

The ACT is the opposite. Stu-dents with stronger mathematical skillsand logical thinking tend to do betteron the ACT. Students with strongerverbal skills and intuitive thinking tendto do better on the SAT.

THE PSATThe PSAT is far more than just

preparation for the SAT. It is the onlynational test used to determine if astudent is to determine eligibility andqualification for the National MeritScholar-ship Program that can includemajor National Merit Scholarships.Colleges give major addit-ional schol-arships to National Merit Scholars.

THE FCATThe Florida Comprehensive As-

sessment Test is given to all tenthgraders in public high schools in thespring. If a high school student doesnot pass the FCAT or an acceptablesubstitute before the end of their sen-ior year, that student will not graduate.Scoring an 18 on and the Reading orthe Math sections of the ACT, or a280 in Reading and a 370 in Math onthe SAT, fulfill this requirement aswell. The FCAT is being phased outby the EOC in Florida public highschools.

THE EOC (End-of-Course As-sessments)

EOC testing has already started inpublic high schools in mathematics.Shortly, this testing will be requiredfor reading, writing, science, and his-tory. Examinations are taken during

one week at the completion of a fullcourse. Stud-ents have all the timeneeded (normally 80 minutes or less)to complete the test in one sitting, everything is computerized, and thestudent must pass the test to receivecredit for the course. EOC’s are notrequired for students with certifica-tions for longer times on tests.

To talk with Dr. Adams aboutyour student doing their best onthe SAT and ACT, contact him at727-253-0639 or [email protected]. He has degrees and ad-vanced studies from Harvard, Yale,Vanderbilt, Columbia Int’l, andLuther Rice; and is one of the topTutors in Tampa Bay. His studentshave been admitted to many col-leges and universities such as Har-vard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell,NYU, U of Chicago, UCLA, USC,UF, FSU, USF, and UCF.

You may also want to talk withDr. Adams about his FREE, PRE-DICTIVE SAT AND ACT TESTSthat can help you know where yourstudent might score on a full exami-nation. A few days after the test, you will receive an E-mailed reportwith individual and compositescores, scores in Vocabulary andGrammar. This timed test can betaken at home or at class.

Long-time advertiser and friendof Neighborhood News & Lifestyles,Donna Ferrante, came to us with aharrowing story of what one of heremployees at The Cleaning Angeland her family went through duringTropical Storm Debby. Like so manyin the area, Christine Bishop and herchildren are temporarily homeless inthe aftermath of the storm that wassurprisingly destructive. Christine isone of Donna’s Cleaning Angels andworks in homes in the area polishingand scrubbing to meet her em-ployer’s high standards in the clean-ing industry.

During Tropical Storm Debby,Christine left her children with a sit-ter while she ran out for a five-minute trip to get toilet paper at thecorner store. In that short time pe-riod, her house was hit by a tornadoand flooded almost immediately.Firemen had blocked the road intothe neighborhood and Christinefrantically told them her childrenwere inside her house. By the time

she got to her children, who hadbeen putting together a jigsaw puzzlebefore their babysitter corralled theminto the hallway, their home was de-stroyed. The children, 10-year-oldDominic and his sisters, 8-year-oldSky-Lyn and Aliyah, 6, saw a tornadodip down at their sliding glass doorjust before part of the roof wasripped away. The family was rescuedby the fire department via bulldozerand boat. Unfortunately everythingthey owned was destroyed in thewind and flood.

Donna says that Christine is adedicated mother who is very consci-entious about her job, even comingto work the next day. “She wouldn’tlet the Angels down,” says Donna, who asked if we could help in gettingthe children items that they need.Donna and her partner Steve Insoliaare accepting clothing and otheritems at Donna’s businesses, TheCleaning Angel in Holiday andMadam Butterfly Fashion Outlet inTarpon Springs.

not anything like dance studios of thepast. They teach techniques and skillsthat kids are excited about and moti-vated to learn, because it’s like whatthey’re seeing when they turn on theTV.

Darlene Jones opened Dance Ex-treme Academy two years ago. She wasinspired to give her daughter and otherdancers a premier studio where theycould focus on learning the moderntype of dances they wanted to learn.

Darlene assembled an amazingstaff to keep the studio moving forwardin the world of dance. Marketing Di-rector Stacey Wyman and EricaKuzniczci are the friendly faces youmeet at the door each time you dropoff or pick up your dancer. Darleneand her staff continually work to createa studio where kids, from beginners tocompetition level dancers, feel comfort-able and have fun, while parents knowtheir children are being taught by expe-rienced and knowledgeable teachers ina safe environment.

Artistic Director Julie Walek hastaught dance and acro (acrobatics thatinclude floor gymnastics, tumbling, andcontortion) for over 17 years winningboth local and national competitionsfor her choreography. Using her experi-ence and knowledge – she earned herdegree at the University of Buffalowhere she studied Dance Curriculum -this dynamic teacher puts her heart andsoul into creating a diverse dance cur-riculum for the studio.

Rosie Easterling, acompetitive dancer and student teachersince nine years old, will be teachingthree- to six-year-old classes. Designed for DancersGirls and boys alike love the

amenities at Dance Extreme Academy. There are stylish, current clothing itemsand dance accessories such as dancebags, leotards and tights available in theboutique area. A large area called “TheCafé” provides a zone where kids can

do their homework and eat a snack, orparents can watch their dancer in thestudio through a large flat-screen TVthat takes live action video of theclasses.

There are two different studios;both feature walls lined with mirrorsand ballet bars, as well as low-impactdance floors and beautiful natural light-ing. Julie explains, “It is important tous to have the correct floors that willprotect our dancers. When young chil-dren are jumping the floors help to ab-sorb some of that impact, so their kneesand bodies will continue to be healthyas they mature as a dancer.”

The studio has a lively, upbeat feelthat makes you feel like you are in thecompany of friends. Friendship and ca-maraderie among the dancers is so im-portant to the staff they even made it

part of their mission statement: “Wewill also work to provide each dancerwith an education that instills poise, grace, self confidence and more impor-tantly, memories and friendships to lasta lifetime.”

From beginners to competitionlevel, Dance Extreme Academy has aplace for every dancer, even adults! Allstudents can perform in their yearlydance recital, and there are perform-ance dancers who perform at variouscommunity events. This is ideal forstudents who enjoy performing beyondthe yearly recital, but are not able tomake the full commitment to competi-tive dance. The studios’ highly success-ful competitive group is formed basedon student auditions, and has placed inthe top ten in every competition theyhave gone to, many times in multiplenumbers.

Recently, Dance Extreme Acad-emy won a Technical Excellence awardat the 2012 Creation Dance Champi-onship; it was one of only three studioawards presented. Students also havewon scholarships for outstanding danc-ing to compete nationally in New York.

Another fabulous learning oppor-tunity at Dance Extreme Academy is inthe master classes. Any student fromthe community can sign up to take aclass with an instructor from a localtouring theatre company. Several times

throughout the year, the academybrings in professional dancers – such asKentrell Newton of MTV’s “America’sBest Dance Crew” – providing a re-markable opportunity for dancers. This year the master classes are featur-ing dancers from Jekyll and Hyde,Wicked, and Flash Dance.

Sharon Rodd’s two daughters takenumerous classes at Dance ExtremeAcademy, and she has been very im-pressed with the instruction they bothreceive. “The teaching quality andchoreography is fabulous. It’s a veryfamily friendly environment. It’s thefurthest thing from a competitive danceshow environment where kids are meanto each other. Of course everyone likeswinning, but what’s most important istheir experience – the teamwork andfriendships they’ve developed. My girlscan’t wait to go there every day.”

Fall classes start August 6 (andfollow the Pasco County School calen-dar). Join Dance Extreme Academy onSaturday, August 4, 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.for their Open House RegistrationCelebration. They will have facepainting, games, balloon creations andraffles. Considering the fact that your skinis your largest organ, and that it faces avariety of harsh conditions throughoutyour lifetime, it is important to knowwhere to turn for outstanding derma-tology care. Trinity Dermatology &Aesthetic Centre, located in the TrinityProfessional Place plaza at the corner ofTrinity Blvd. and Duck Slough Blvd. isdedicated to treating skin conditions ofall kinds including skin cancer, psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, acne, rashes, wrinklesand more.

Patients who come to Trinity Der-matology & Aesthetic Centre see BrianT. Johnson, M.D., a Board CertifiedDermatologist who has been treatinglocal patients since he opened his firstpractice nearby in 1990. Since thattime he has built an impressive reputa-tion for truly listening to his patients, providing exceptional care, and gettingincredible results.

Dr. Johnson has been seeing pa-tients for more than 22 years at hisoriginal office, located on Grand Blvd.in the Richey Medical Center. Fouryears ago, in addition to his New PortRichey office, he opened Trinity Der-matology & Aesthetic Centre in Trinityto be more centrally located to themany surrounding communities, in-cluding East Lake, Lutz, Land O’Lakes and Tampa. On staff at the newMedical Center of Trinity as well asNorth Bay Hospital, Dr. Johnson is atrusted dermatologist in the commu-nity.

Dr. Johnson earned his Bachelorof Science degree and his Doctor ofMedicine degree from The Universityof Iowa, and completed four years ofresidency before moving to Florida.Born and raised in the Midwest, Dr.

Johnson knew he wanted to be a doc-tor, but he never intended to be a der-matologist. “As a doctor [in residency]you rotate through all of the special-ties,” said Dr. Johnson, “I was im-pressed with the preciseness andexpertise that was required of dermatol-ogists. That’s when I knew that waswhat I wanted to do, and I find it veryrewarding.”

Together with his two CertifiedPhysician Assistants, Marijana Cejkovaand Tonya Terwilliger, Dr. Johnsontreats everything from skin cancer toacne and wrinkles. Dr. Johnson says,“We take the time to get to know ourpatients, and we listen to what theirconcerns are.”

In addition to medical treatmentsand medications, Jessica Banes-Pyles, aLicensed Paramedical Aesthetician whois affiliated with Dr. Johnson offers awide variety of skin care treatments, fa-cials, microdermabrasion, and chemicalpeels that will improve the appearanceof your skin.

Trinity Dermatology & AestheticCentre combines Dr. Johnson’s med-ical expertise with the many fantasticaesthetic treatment options that are

available today for patients who want tolook and feel better about their skin.

Treating Acne to Wrinkles andEverything in Between

According to the CDC, skin can-cer is the most common form of cancerin the United States, and just like otherforms of cancer, it can be life threaten-ing. That is why it is so important tosee a qualified dermatologist, like Dr.Johnson, about anything on your bodythat doesn’t look right. It’s criticallyimportant that people pay attention tochanges in their skin, changes in moles,or the appearance of anything thatwon’t heal. These could be signs ofcancer, and these skin changes don’t al-ways appear in places that receive sun-light! Skin cancer can appear anywhereon your body.

“Our goal is to treat cancer as sim-ply, easily and cheaply as possible,” saysDr. Johnson. “Prevention is our num-ber one focus, followed by early diag-nosis and treatment.”

In addition to traditional skin can-cer treatments, Dr. Johnson has a newstate-of-the-art piece of equipmentcalled the BLU-U. The BLU-U is aquick and affordable way to treat pre-cancerous Actinic Keratoses or AKs asthey are more commonly known. AKsare rough, scaly patches on the skincaused by too much exposure to thesun. Dr. Johnson also uses the BLU-Uto successfully treat other skin condi-tions like acne as well.

According to Dr. Johnson, 90 per-cent of teenagers get acne, and there’struly no reason to suffer with the manytopical and oral medical options thatare out there. Treatments now are sogood that they can often see a patientjust once as opposed to asking them tocome back again and again. “We give a

treatment and we expect that to work.”He adds, “Left untreated, acne is des-tined to get worse.” People of all agesget acne, and Dr. Johnson can help.Thankfully, with today’s treatment op-tions, getting rid of acne can be simpleand painless.

People who live with conditionslike eczema or psoriasis don’t have tosuffer. Dr. Johnson says, “Psoriasis isthe second most common skin ailmentbehind acne.” For example, Dr. John-son says that there are two new treat-ments for people who have a thickpsoriasis plaque. The most affordableand most common treatment is to giveIntralesional Injections, and if moretreatment is necessary there are otheroptions like Immune Modulative med-ications.

While wrinkles are a natural part ofthe aging process, growing old grace-fully doesn’t mean that you have togrow old with wrinkles! If you havewrinkles that you are concerned about,Botox and injectible fillers are a greatalternative to plastic surgery and theyoften have dramatic effects. Dr. John-son says, “These treatments are a lotless aggressive and side effect prone.”These simple, quick and effective pro-cedures are done right on the premises.

Trinity Dermatology uses theCynosure Elite, the most comprehen-sive laser hair removal system availabletoday. Since it’s designed for all skintypes, it is used to treat the broadestrange of clients. The Cynosure Elitelaser system is optimized for effectivetreatment of facial and leg veins, as wellas benign epidermal pigmented lesions(sun spots) with easy, safe, effective andfast results. Suncoast Urgent Care, located atTrinity Village Center, is proud to becelebrating its 5th Anniversary thismonth. Peter C. Duic, MD, and JohnP. Opyoke, MD, drew upon their ex-tensive experience as emergency roomdoctors when they opened the urgentcare facility, originally named TrinityUrgent Care, on July 16, 2007. Drs.Opyoke and Duic decided to changethe name of their practice in order tohave more uniformity when theyopened a second location in July2009 on Mariner Boulevard in SpringHill. Both facilities are open seven

days a week, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. onMonday through Saturday, and 10a.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday.

Dr. Opyoke and Dr. Duic areboth residency-trained in emergencymedicine and both doctors are BoardCertified by the American Board ofEmergency Medicine; important be-cause they are both specifically trainedto handle all kinds of emergencies.

“We opened as ER doctors, see-ing how much could be cared forhere,” says Dr. Duic. “We’ve becomean integral part of the community andhave a wonderful group of people. It’s really a pleasure to be able to carefor patients here.”

At far less cost to the patient thana visit to the hospital ER, the doctorsat Suncoast Urgent Care treat every-thing from common colds to brokenbones. The doctors designed the facil-ity with the technology to care for ur-gent needs, and additionally, theymade it comfortable and pleasant forpatients and families – a place wherethey would want their own childrentreated.

Suncoast Urgent Care is notmeant for life-threatening emergen-cies. Rather, it provides quality med-ical care in a state-of-the-art facilityfor patients who are sick or injured

but who do not require emergencyroom measures.

Harmon participated in TrinityRotary's District Simplified Grant (Dis-trict Simplified Grants are a tool forRotary districts to support short-termhumanitarian projects that benefit thecommunity) to create a kid-friendly en-vironment at Pasco Kids First, whichprovides medical exams and therapy tochildren who are victims of child abuseand neglect. "Roxanne put her heartinto this project using her talents andexpertise to create a comfortable envi-ronment for children who are oftenvulnerable and scared. She spent manymore hours and, in addition to the mu-rals donated through the grant, she alsodonated several additional murals. Thisaward is the least we could do to thankher," stated Trinity Rotary PresidentBecky Bennett.

Help For the Homeless on Wheels"There are 4,000 homeless chil-

dren in Pasco County," says Public De-fender Bob Dillinger¬¬–that justboggles my mind." For a homeless per-son, a simple toothache or a cough, ifleft untreated, could ultimately end upin a costly trip to the emergency room. That's where the county's new Mobile

Medical Care Unit comes into effect."You have to take the medicine towhere the people are." Dillinger says hehopes the mobile unit will help his of-fice expand its homeless outreach inPasco County.

Pinellas County recently purchaseda new van and, in return, Pasco County

purchased Pinellas' Mobile MedicalCare van. The public defender's officeis in partnership with the Pasco HealthDepartment and they are operating thevehicle. There were a lot of donationsgiven to the public defender's office tohelp this program. And written into thepublic defender's budget is $165,000for salaries to pay part time nurses anddrivers. The funding started on July 1.

Dillinger says he already has a two-page list of volunteers–mostly retirednurses–who have offered to assist themobile unit. He's looking for pediatri-cians and pharmacists to get involved.Medical Center of Trinity has donated$10,000 worth of flu shots.

Shanna Shea who coordinates theMobile Medical Care Unit for thePinellas-Pasco Public Defender's officesays, "This is a great opportunity forpoor people in Pasco County. Initially,we go (to where we plan to be) a weekbeforehand and put up posters andhandouts to alert the homeless. Peopleare signed up in advance so the nursepractitioners have some idea of what(to expect) when we get there. Untilwe get full-time staff we'll be using theHealth Department's nurse practition-ers. These nurses can write prescrip-tions, and they know which ones arefree at Publix. We'll be going to home-less shelters or churches, places that al-

ready have an existing population whouse their food banks and showers. We've been hitting areas in both eastand west sides of Pasco to see what theneed is."

Health Department nurse PamSherwood tells us, "Most of the clientswe see haven't had any medical care formany years. They have multiple medicalproblems, and you have to pick andchoose which one to treat. You can'tsolve all their problems, and you haveto understand that they don't have anymoney."

David Bledsoe, spokesman forMetropolitan Ministries, said the mo-bile medical unit offers services that are"vastly underprovided" in PascoCounty, saying, "There's limited accessto free clinics. You have to have trans-portation, and sometimes you have tohave an address. Homeless people wholive in camps don't have that." Someof the locations the Mobile MedicalCare Unit is expected to visit are: Im-pact Family Ministries in Port Richey,Metropolitan Ministries in Holiday, theRope Center in Hudson, and GulfCoast Women's Center, Hudson.

The Homeless Coalition (727-842-8605; email:[email protected]) will belisting the mobile medical unit sched-ules; they can also be found in local

Message from Pasco CountySheriff Chris Nocco

The recent flooding and stormdamage caused in Pasco County byTropical Storm Debby underscores theneed for citizens to have a disaster plan.Although this storm was not originallyprojected to be a threat to the area, itsslow-moving progress and heavy rainsseverely flooded several counties inWest Central Florida.

I’m proud of the Pasco deputieswho worked long hours during andafter the storm to assist citizens whosuffered flooding and storm damage totheir homes and property. Hurricaneseason lasts until November 30 and ifyou haven’t already done so, the timeto prepare for disaster is before itstrikes.

According to Florida’s 2012 Se-vere Weather Awareness Guide, familiesshould have an emergency kit that con-tains food for at least three days, water,

required medicines, a first aid kit, andadditional survival items should youhave to live without electrical power orshould you have to leave your home. The guide also urges you to have anemergency plan, which details whereyour family should meet in case a disas-ter separates you from your loved ones, the names of friends and family youcould live with if forced out of yourhome, and instructions for turning offelectrical, gas, water, and heater systemsat the breaker switches.

An important tool that can saveyour life and the life of your loved onesis a NOAA Weather Radio. Accordingto FloridaDisaster.org, nearly 75 per-cent of tornado fatalities in Florida since1950 have occurred between 9 p.m.and 7 a.m., when people are least likelyto be tuned into other sources ofweather information. A NOAA WeatherRadio is the lone government-operatedradio system that provides NationalWeather Service severe weather warn-ings 24 hours a day. If you live in thepath of the severe storm, and your fam-ily has a NOAA All-Hazards WeatherRadio, the radio will automaticallysound an alarm and then broadcast thewarning message, regardless of the timeof day. The newer weather radios evenallow you to program the alarm tosound for specific counties and hazards.

If you are hard of hearing or a heavysleeper, there is even a kit available forthe radio that includes a pillow shakerand strobe light which can wake you inthe middle of the night.

Part of law enforcement and emer-gency services mission during extremeweather and disasters is to convince citi-zens on the importance of evacuations. No one wants to leave the comfort oftheir home and many people may wantto try and stay put to protect theirhome and belongings. However, emer-gency management personnel do notissue evacuation orders unless their ex-perience and training lead them to be-

lieve that citizen’s lives are in danger. Ifyou receive an order to evacuate, DOSO! Remember the tragic case of citi-zens who tried to ride out the stormwhen Hurricane Katrina hit the GulfCoast in 2005.They later tried to callfor emergency assistance but law en-forcement and emergency personnelwere unable to respond, and many peo-ple lost their lives.

You can download Florida’s 2012Severe Weather Awareness Guide andset up a family disaster plan at Flori-daDisaster.org. Do it today, as severeweather and other disasters can strike atany time.

Whether you eat at Fairway PizzaToo or have it delivered, you will beimpressed with their customer service. The restaurant’s décor is in a golftheme, with memorabilia from localgolf courses and well known players(Jason’s mom is a former pro golfer). The inside is so well maintained andclean you would think it’s one of thearea’s newer restaurants. The staffmakes customers feel like everyone is aregular, and after nearly 20 years it’snot a business philosophy, but a way oflife when you enter the restaurant.

Fairway Pizza Too also has anenormous delivery range. Jason says,“We deliver to an area of Odessa thatno one else delivers to. Even if a cus-tomer is out of our large delivery area,we’ll meet them halfway. It’s the tinythings that we do to personalize ourservice that people remember. We goout of our way and love to alter thingsto people’s liking.”

Fairway Pizza Too has such awide selection of items that even whenyou are ordering for a large familythere are plenty of options to satisfyeveryone’s appetite – and I have toadmit over the years I have sampled

just about the whole menu! Fromtheir Starters or appetizers, I highlyrecommend their garlic bread withcheese and marinara dipping sauce aswell as the pita bites, which are warmslices of pita bread served with a sideof tzatziki sauce. Fairway’s pizza is anorthern-style pan pizza with amedium crust, that’s golden in color. If you’re looking for something otherthan a traditional pizza, the white andAlfredo pizza are great options, aswell as several specialty pizzas such astheir seafood or barbeque chickenpizzas.

While their pizza is delicious, Fair-way is probably best known for theirGreek salad – the best I’ve ever had. IfI was stranded on a deserted islandand could only be allowed one food totake with me it would be their Greeksalad with potato salad. The lettuce isshredded just enough so when youtake a bite you can get ham and feta allon the same fork full. The tomatoesare always red and are accompanied bypepperoncini, calamata olives, cucum-ber, green bell peppers and red onions.Their Greek salad dressing is served onthe side along with bread. If youorder it with potato salad it adds a niceheartiness to the salad. Jason says thathe has customers who make day tripsfrom Orlando to order their Greek

salad. One customer even told Jasonthat his neighbor in Pittsburg told himhe had to go to Fairway Pizza Toowhen he came to Florida to get theirGreek salad! You can order party sizesof Greek salad as well as all of theirhomemade salad dressings.

Laurie Zak of Tarpon Springssays, “Fairway’s Greek salad is a to-goitem we order ahead and pick up forparties and family gatherings. I bringmy own dish and have it filled to servethe number of guests we invite. Hav-ing the tasty dressing in a side con-tainer keeps the salad nice and crispy.

There is no work involved for us and itis freshly made. Not only is this con-venient, it is delicious! It seems like nomatter how much we order for thesespecial occasions we never have left-overs! In over 20 years of going toFairway Pizza Too, we have neverbeen disappointed. The food is freshand delicious, and the atmosphere isso warm and friendly we always lookforward to going back.”

Greek salad is one of Fairway Pizza Too's most requested items. It's popular asboth a meal and for catering. The pizza tastes amazing, from classic pepperoni

and cheese to specialty pizzas such as seafood or barbecue chicken.

sar salad with marinated sliced chickenbreast, pineapple and large crisp crou-tons. The teriyaki chicken Caesar islight and refreshing, yet very satisfying– I find it especially enjoyable in thesummer.

If you’re looking for an Italiandinner you can find spaghetti, stuffedshells, chicken parmesan and more, allwith marinara sauce, melted cheese, garlic bread and tossed salad. If you’renot in the mood for a full dinner, thereare over 20 hot oven grinders, wrapsand traditional or chicken gyros tomake choosing your meal an evenharder decision. The children’s menu

includes classics such as spaghetti and achicken tender basket. A favorite inour house is the pita pizza, which isnot only a great price, but also allowseach child to have their own minipizza with the toppings they’ve de-cided upon.

High quality food at a greatprice can be hard to come by, butFairway Pizza Too does not compro-mise on their luncheon specials, which all include a fountain drink;and many like the small grinder spe-cial, also include a tossed salad. Theyalso have a daily two-for-one happyhour on draft beer and house wines,

and if you order a large pizza whenyou dine in on Mondays you get afree pitcher of beer or soda with yourpizza. What a great way to start offthe week!

Consistently good food is whyPaul Meyers, who works nearby, hasbeen a Fairway Pizza Too customerfor years. Paul says, “It’s not a gam-ble of what you’re going to get.Everything is good every time. I liketo alter things on the menu, and theymake it for me just as I asked. LatelyI’ve been having the eggplant withblack olives and feta without bread. They make it to order.”

If it’s been awhile since you’vebeen to Trinity’s local legendaryrestaurant, Fairway Pizza Too, orif you’re new to the area, stop infor some great food and say hi toJason. of Oral Implantologists, Dr. Mostafais a member of the American DentalAssociation, the Florida Dental Asso-ciation, West Coast Dental Associa-tion, West Pasco Dental Associationand Hillsborough County Dental Re-search Clinic.

Recently opening a second loca-tion in New Port Richey, Dr.Mostafa’s reputation has earned hima great deal of respect in the area. Pa-tients particularly like the care thatthey receive by Dr. Mostafa and hisfriendly staff, who have all been withhim for many years.

Dr. Mostafa also does a gooddeal of volunteer work in the area, and even helped to found the RedCrescent Clinic in Tampa which pro-vides free dental work for people whocan’t afford it. He also volunteers atGood Samaritan Health Clinic ofPasco and the Gulf Coast DentalOutreach.

One of Dr. Mostafa’s patientssaid, “My experience at AmericanFamily & Cosmetic Dentistry has al-ways been positive. Dr. Mostafaand his staff have always treated

me with respect and professionalism.I would highly recommend this officeto anyone who is looking for a highlyskilled dentist and staff.”

Expert Technique & ModernTechnology

Dr. Mostafa’s office is equippedwith all of the latest technology de-signed to make going to the dentist astress-free experience. For those of uswho remember the big, loud dentalx-ray machines, you’ll be happy toknow that those have been replacedwith state-of-the-art digital x-rays.These are quick, painless and safer –giving off 80% less radiation thanstandard x-rays.

Another way that technology isused at American Family & CosmeticDentistry is the intraoral camera. This is a great way for him to see theentire mouth on and look for any po-tential problems. When he uses thecamera he is able to really see parts ofthe mouth on a monitor that hemight not have been able to see at alljust a few years ago.

If you thinkyou may need

oral surgery,you will be

very pleased to find out that laser sur-gery is now available. Procedures likefillings, gum surgery and more nolonger have to be done using louddrills. Lasers have changed every-thing about having oral proceduresdone. No more bleeding, no morestitches, no more needles! Laser den-tistry allows patients to even eat, drink and talk right after having aprocedure done. Lasers are extremelyhelpful in cos-metic proce-

dures as well. Endodontics, or root canal sur-

gery removes the nerve in the tooth.Rotary Endodontics is a new way ofperforming the root canal using anelectric tool that is worn on the den-tist’s hand. This new technologymakes having a root canal a lot fasterand easier, which means patients canget back to feeling better right away.

These modern tools allow Dr.

Many people areashamed of their teeth, and even tryto hide them by not smiling or bycovering their mouths when theylaugh. In today’s age, that isn’t nec-essary. Dr. Mostafa and his staff cancreate the smile of your dreams rightthere in the office. Cosmetic den-tistry can be as simple as teethwhitening, or as life-changing as den-tal implants.
