Operation Christmas Child Jesus Commands us… Therefore go and make disciples of all nations. Baptizing them in the name of the father and the son, and the holy spirit and to obey everything they are commanded to do. On Saturday, June 17th Gail and I travelled to Trumbull, CT for an Operation Christmas Child gathering. It was held at Calvary Baptist Church which has been a drop off center. Cecil Pollydore who is the regional director of Operation Christmas

Child was on hand. He had made a distribution visit to Togo West Africa and shared highlights of the journey with us. He also explained why candy is no longer allowed in the boxes. Many of the boxes are not delivered for months the hard candy melts and sticks all over the contents of the box and ruins it leaving a child with out a gift. He also explained why toothpaste is no longer allowed. It has an expiration date and may be expired before it is delivered creating a custom issue. Cecil will visit Trinity on September 17th to share his journey with you during a Temple Talk and then he will join us in the parlor for coffee hour. Well summer is upon us and wears all busy with get together and vacations but I encourage you to remember Operation Christmas Child when you are out shopping. Collection week will be here before you know it. We want to do as many boxes as we can to ensure more children are blessed with the message of Gods love through this simple shoebox gift. Wishing you all a wonderful and safe summer Blessings

Seafarers International House

I was greeted with a lot of excitement as I climbed the gangway and onto the deck. I was surrounded by an excited crew all anxious to know how I might help them. I quickly learned that only 8 of the crew had a visa and would be allowed to leave the ship for shore leave. Because the ship had been at sea for a long voyage, the crew were not able to be in contact with their families. They were all anxious to know if I had any wifi’s or if I could buy them sim cards. Soon my wifi’s were connected and the password passed around. Quickly crew were connected and busy with email, Facebook and skype. I was told that they were all very happy. It seemed like my work was done when another crewman, the C/E came and excitedly asked if I could take crew out. He liked to visit the places where the ship docked, “What are the places of interest in New Haven and when can we go?” and of course, “is there a Best Buy, we want to go there too and what about a Walmart?” We agreed that I would pick them up at 1800 when they were off duty, they could shop and we would pick

up flyers from the stores for the crew unable to leave the ship. Early the next morning, I received a call from the C/E asking if I could pick them up at 1300 and take them for a tour of the city and of course, also shop. They were anxious to see our church, so our first stop was at Trinity. Pat gave them the grand tour and a lot of pictures were taken and prayers said. Then it was off to see Yale. We stopped on Trumbull St. at the Yale University sign again to take pictures. They kept asking me “Where is the wall, where is the wall?” “No wall around Yale,” I told them, “Yale is built within the city.” I drove them around showing them the sights and then parked so they could go into the quad by the Sterling library and take more pictures. The day before when we were on Rt 91 they had seen “the mountain with the rocket on top” so I drove them to the top of East Rock. They jumped up and down when they could see their ship down in the harbor. Again, they raced all over reading signs, taking pictures and were just so excited and interested in all they were seeing. It was just so much fun to see them enjoying being off the ship and free. Then of course, it was off for more shopping.

Please remember that summer time can be a good time to look for bargains to fill Christmas-at-Sea satchels. And please remember to keep all seafarers in your prayers as seas continue to be stormy and countries they visit dangerous. Remember that 90% of all we have comes to us on a ship. Have a GREAT summer! Ruth Setaro, Chaplain

Dear Members and Friends of Trinity Lutheran Church,

Trinity’s historic Steeple is our signature on the New Haven skyline. Our Steeple points up to God’s glory, but also marks our congregation below as God’s people, with a ministry to all people in New Haven. But our steeple is also in trouble, with much needed repairs nowoverdue, and becoming more costly every year.

This fall, please join us in our Steeple for the People Restoration Campaign. This campaign will culminate with our gifts and pledges on the 500th Anniversary of Martin Luther’s Reformation, October 29, 2017. Our goal is to raise $60,000 towards this repair—and with your generosity and God’s help we can do it!

This fall you will find an informational display at church detailing repairs, and be invited to make a generous gift towards this effort. You will also be invited to sponsor a shingle in memory or honor of a loved one, and receive a commemorative shingle to give or keep.

Church members whose relatives worked on the initial steeple and bell have told me how proud they were to do so. We too can be proud of this once-in-a-generation repair, to the glory of God and in honor of all the people who find a place to belong under this steeple.

My thanks to the Steeple for the People Restoration Campaign leadership team: Scott Prud’homme and Cedric Jacobson, chairs; Heidi Edgerton, Doug Golden, and Fred Sundermann.

God bless you as together we restore our Steeple for the People.

--Pastor Mills+

Trinity welcomes Slovak Seminarian for the Summer

Trinity welcomes Seminarian Jakub Ferko to New Haven for the summer! Together with Holy Trinity Lutheran Church in Trumbull, Trinity will host Jakub for a 3-month immersion program in the U.S. Jakub will study under Pastor Mills, assist in worship, visit parishioners, help with VBS, and learn about the Lutheran Church and ministry in the U.S. After his time in New Haven, Jakub will return to Slovakia, and become a Lutheran pastor there. If you would like to host Jakub in a spare room for a two-week period, or invite him to your home for a meal or visit, please contact Pastor Mills. More about Jakub: Jakub is a 23-year-old, third year student at Evanjelická bohoslovecká fakulta – Univerzita Komenského in Bratislava, Slovakia. He is from the town of Vranov nad Topľou, a city in the region of Prešov, in eastern Slovakia, just 20 miles to the north of the Hungarian border and 25 miles to the west of the Ukrainian border. His interests include traveling, sports, and outdoor/physical culture. Jakub is certain of his vocation in the Ministry. He enjoys preaching and wants to gain more experience in it. He enjoys working with youth and young adults, and is energized by fellowship and interacting with others in the church community. He is looking forward to being able to spend this opportunity with you, and hopes to discover new perceptions of the Lutheran Church.

Brian Peterson to serve as Intern at Trinity

Brian Peterson, an associate member of Trinity and Yale Divinity School student, will serve as our pastoral intern during the 2017-18 academic year. Following an agreement between Pastor, Brian, and Yale Divinity School, Brian will begin his internship with us in August.

Trinity has a proud history of preparing seminarians to serve as faithful Lutheran pastors, and Brian will continue this tradition. Already known to many in the congregation, watch this fall for Brian preaching, teaching, praying, and visiting among our congregation. Thanks be to God!

It is a joy to grow in faith through the life of congregation and to be in community with such capable, talented, and fun people. I look forward to the opportunity to grow closer and be more active in ministry in the coming 2017-2018 academic year under the supervision of our outstanding pastor, Rev. “BRINGING HOPE TO CHILDREN IN INDIA” Giving …. It’s such a difficult subject. The need is great – here in Connecticut every 6th child goes hungry and it’s probably not much different in other parts of the Western world. If we compare poverty in the West and poverty in India – well, there is no

comparison. Even less fortunate people in the West are rich in comparison to the Dalits/Outcasts in India. Soup kitchens, shelters, food stamps, section 8 housing …. There are many services available in the developed countries – if all of these services were available to our kiddies in India REACH DALIT would not need to exist.

Giving is a good thing. Of course it helps others - nevertheless it has a positive effect on the giver, too. Scientific studies have been done on the subject:

Want to be happier? Give more. Looking for that “warm glow”? Spend on others. Getting stuck in life’s routine? See how you can help others.

What is the right amount to give? An amount that is not so small that you feel guilty and not so large that you feel stressed. The need is endless, and we cannot help the entire world. But for our kiddies in India we are the world.

From our point of view the best gift is the one that arrives on a regular bases regular. The size doesn’t matter. Regular gifts make planning easier – and the Indian side knows what to expect. One time gifts are great as well – they are beneficial for building projects like improving the kitchen or bathrooms – or when a boy jumps of a roof and brakes his arm!

Onward! And Make a gift to our kids and to yourself this summer!! Thank you!!!
