1While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had indeed married a Cushite woman); 2 and they said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth. 4Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them came out. 5Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the entrance of the tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forward. 6And he said, “Hear my words: When there are prophets among you, I the Lord make myself known to them in visions; I speak to them in dreams. 7Not so with my servant Moses; he is entrusted with all my house. 8With him I speak face to face—clearly, not in riddles; and he beholds the form of the Lord. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” 9And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and he departed. 10When the cloud went away from over the tent, Miriam had become leprous, as white as snow. And Aaron turned towards Miriam and saw that she was leprous. 11Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, do not punish us for a sin that we have so foolishly committed. 12Do not let her be like one

stillborn, whose flesh is half consumed when it comes out of its mother’s womb.” 13And Moses cried to the Lord, “O God, please heal her.” 14But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp for seven days, and after that she may be brought in again.” 15So Miriam was shut out of the camp for seven days; and the people did not set out on the march until Miriam had been brought in again.

1The boy Samuel served the Lord under Eli. In those days the Lord did not speak directly to people very often; there were very few visions. 2Eli’s eyes were so weak he was almost blind. One night he was lying in bed. 3Samuel was also in bed in the Lord’s house, where the Ark of the Agreement was. God’s lamp was still burning. 4Then the Lord called Samuel, and Samuel answered, “I am here!” 5He ran to Eli and said, “I am here. You called me.” But Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” So Samuel went back to bed. 6The Lord called again, “Samuel!” Samuel again went to Eli and said, “I am here. You called me.” Again Eli said, “I didn’t call you. Go back to bed.” 7Samuel did not yet know the Lord, and the Lord had not spoken directly to him yet. 8The Lord called Samuel for the third time. Samuel got up and

went to Eli and said, “I am here. You called me.” Then Eli realized the Lord was calling the boy. 9So he told Samuel, “Go to bed. If he calls you again, say, ‘Speak, Lord. I am your servant and I am listening.’” So Samuel went and lay down in bed. 10The Lord came and stood there and called as he had before, “Samuel, Samuel!” Samuel said, “Speak, Lord. I am your servant and I am listening.”

mark 4:35–4135That evening, Jesus said to his followers,

“Let’s go across the lake.” 36Leaving the crowd behind, they took him in the boat just as he was. There were also other boats with them. 37A very strong wind came up on the lake. The waves came over the sides and into the boat so that it was already full of water. 38Jesus was at the back of the boat, sleeping with his head on a cushion. His followers woke him and said, “Teacher, don’t you care that we are drowning!” 39Jesus stood up and commanded the wind and said to the waves, “Quiet! Be still!” Then the wind stopped, and it became completely calm. 40Jesus said to his followers, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?” 41The followers were very afraid and asked each other, “Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!”

1Now Jacob looked up and saw Esau coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids. 2He put the maids with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. 3He himself went on ahead of them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near his brother. 4But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. 5When Esau looked up and saw the women and children, he said, “Who are these with you?” Jacob said, “The children whom God has graciously given your servant.” 6Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down; 7Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and finally Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. 8Esau said, “What do you mean by all this company that I met?” Jacob answered, “To find favor with my lord.” 9But Esau said, “I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself.” 10Jacob said, “No, please; if I find favor with you, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God—since you have received me with such favor. 11Please accept my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have everything I want.” So he urged him, and he took it.

riteS of paSSage miniStryPastor: Mentors, what is your pleasure concerning these candidates for manhood?

Mentors: Pastor, Elders, Parents and Congregation, we give these candidates back to you in the same spirit of love that you gave them to us. We assure you that we have trained them in the ways they should go and affirm that they are ready to assume the responsibilities of manhood.

Pastor: Elders, what is your pleasure?

Elders: Pastor, we have tested these candidates and have found them to be fit for the journey of manhood that lies ahead. We, therefore, affirm their movement from one clearly defined state of existence to the next.

Pastor: Congregation, what is your pleasure?

Congregation: As people of faith who understand the need for Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian men in the village, we affirm these candidates as the new men they have become.

Pastor: Parents, are you ready now to accept the fact that your boys have become men and to give them the respect and responsibilities that come with manhood?

Parents: We affirm that our sons have become men and will not hold back anything they have earned in accord with that status.

Pastor: Candidates, hearing these affirmations made in the presence of God, do you now accept the identity and responsibilities of manhood that have been conferred upon you by your extended family?

Candidates: As we have put aside our childish ways, we accept the wisdom of our elders who have guided us into manhood and we pledge to demonstrate with our hearts, minds, souls and bodies that we are the men you have recognized.

Pastor: Prayer of Affirmation

time to exit iraq

Dear Trinitarian,In the Senate debate on the FY 2007 Defense Authorization Bill this week, Senator John Kerry

(D-MA) and others will put forward two amendments with specific plans for U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. The first will call for an up or down vote, requiring that American troops be brought home safely from Iraq by the end of 2006.

The second will be a non-binding sense of the Senate calling for withdrawal during the next 18 months. Now that a new national government is in place in Iraq, and with growing evidence

from Iraq that the U.S. presence is feeding, rather than containing the insurgency, the time to get out is now. Log on to www.ucctakeaction.org/exitiraq to send a message to your senators, supporting these two amendments.

ucc Justice and witness ministries Joins new national peace campaign:The United Church of Christ Justice and Witness Ministries has endorsed a new initiative, the Declaration of Peace, a pledge to take peaceful steps for the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and to engage in nonviolent protests if a plan to end the war is not established and begun by September 21, 2006— International Peace Day.

If the September 21 deadline is not met, Declaration of Peace signers pledge to engage in peaceful action in Washington, DC, at Congressional offices and other sites throughout the nation from September 21–28. To read the declaration of peace, learn more, and sign up for the campaign online, visit the website at www.declarationofpeace.org.

support kennedy amendment to increase minimum wage

Dear Trinitarian,The battle to increase the federal minimum wage once again came to a head this past week, when

Senator Edward Kennedy offered an amendment in the Senate to the Department of Defense authorization bill to increase the federal minimum wage to $7.25 an hour, a $2.10 increase from the current stagnant wage floor.

Last week, a House sub-committee passed a minimum wage increase amendment to the Labor, Health and Human Services appropriations bill in a bi-partisan vote, but the House leadership refused to allow the bill’s consideration by the full House.

As people of faith, we are called to advocate for justice and to ensure fair wages and working conditions for workers. The United Church of Christ has long held that work should keep people out of poverty, not keep them in it, and increasing the minimum wage is an important first step to ensuring that work provides a living for everyone.

The current minimum wage has failed to keep pace with the increased cost of living over the years. Stalled at $5.15 an hour since 1997, a person working a full-time minimum wage job will earn $10,700 in a year, nearly $6,000 below the federal poverty line for a family of three.

In the nearly ten years since the last increase, $5.15 has been losing its value, forcing families to make difficult decisions between buying groceries and paying rent.

This increase in the minimum wage is desperately needed by millions of working Americans who are struggling to make ends meet. Log on to www.ucctakeaction.org/minwage to send a message to your senators urging them to support the Kennedy amendment to increase the federal minimum wage.

Call your senators today at 1-888-355-3588 to tell them to give working America a raise! The United Church of Christ is working to increase the minimum wage at the state level in Ohio,

Arizona, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Montana and Colorado. We have already won increases in Arkansas, Michigan and West Virginia. For more information, visit the UCC sponsored Let Justice Roll Living Wage Campaign at www.letjusticeroll.org.

Rev. Reginald Williams, Jr.

Over the past 10 years, Advocate Health Care has spent over $605 million on capital improvements for hospitals which service affluent, predominately white communities (Christ Hospital in Oak Lawn, Good Samaritan in Downers Grove, Good Shepherd in Barrington and Lutheran General in Park Ridge). During the same time frame, Advocate has spent only $47 million in capital improvements on the four hospitals (Bethany in Chicago, Trinity in Chicago, South Suburban in Hazel Crest, and Illinois Masonic in Chicago), which serve mainly low- and no-income individuals. In no uncertain terms, this racist policy is

nothing more than what Rev. Marshall Hatch termed racial redlining. The well-being and lives of whites are still over and above the lives of blacks and browns. The spending of funds to increase the health chances of whites, while doing very little in the black and brown neighborhoods, which need health care the most, is racially despicable. What is even more heinous is that Advocate calls itself a ministry of healing. Advocate is benefiting from the relationship with ELCA/UCC, which ensures its tax exempt status. In return for that tax exempt status, Advocate is supposed to provide benefits for the community such as low cost or no cost health care to the poor and underinsured. With a $60 million gap in the tax

breaks received, and the amount of community benefits given, Advocate is clearly not living up to its end of the bargain.Advocate’s stance on capital investments in

black and brown communities begs the question of the ELCA and UCC denominations: Why are we in relationship with an organization which benefits from its relationship with us, yet institutes policies and procedures which are directly opposite of that which we have declared we believe ($605 million in capital expenditures for wealthy white communities, while only $47 million for black and brown neighborhoods)?

ACTION ITEMSCall CEO Jim Skogsberg at 630-572-9393 and demand that capital expenditures be boosted in black and brown communities to equal or exceed that of the wealthy white communities.

Boycott Wal-Mart & Sam’s Club.
