Ugly Sweaters

Every Christmas season, my generation becomes obsessed in the Ugly Sweater craze. Some of you may know

what I am talking about, others may have never noticed. Here is what it is: Thanksgiving passes and we scour the thrift

shops for hidden gems that are “ugly sweaters.” I use quotations here for a reason. The ugliness of the sweater is quite

subjective. Anyway, we all spend days visiting Goodwill and the Salvation Army to find the perfect sweater. Once we do,

we all get together for a Christmas party and vote on who has the ugliest sweater. I don’t want to brag, but I was the

2015 Ugly Sweater winner for my friends Tom and Lydia’s Christmas party. My prize was a sparkly green nutcracker,

with big red buttons that had the words “Ugliest Sweater: 1st place” written on it.

The winning sweater was this purple, pink, cyan and black fabric woven in such a way that every color clashed.

It is a mess of a sweater. A stripe of pink stretched across the chest with cyan swirls flowing freely throughout. Purple

and pink argyle print adorned the sweater with black triangles along the arms. Over the sweater, I wore a vest with the

nativity scene on it. Some of you may have seen me wear this vest to church. It is a dark blue vest with angels, Mary,

Joseph, a cow, and of course, a bouncy baby Jesus. To top the outfit off, I wore a winter beanie and comfy toe socks

with reindeer pajamas. I went all out for the coveted green nutcracker prize.

You see, something changed for me when looking for ugly sweaters these past two years. The sweaters were

not ugly to me anymore. Granted, they were the same weird print and crazy colors with wild hemlines and sparkly beads

interlaced within the fabric, but they were not ugly. You may have had a youth comment on your sweater at church

saying how they would like to borrow your sweater for their ugly sweater party. To you, your sweater is beautiful. How

could someone look at your sweater and ever think it was ugly? This happened to me also. I began to see the beauty in

the sweaters because I saw their worth. I knew the ugliest sweater could get me a prize. Call it the competitor in me, but

I like winning and will usually do what it takes to win. So I began to see the beauty in ugly sweaters.

So in this Christmas season, I think of the ugly sweaters, not only because I want to win my friends Ugly

Sweater Christmas party for the second time, but also because I see the Christmas story in these sweaters. We humans

are ugly. We sin. We try to live good lives. All the while, we slander and gossip. We use coarse language instead of

building people up. We are filled with malice, rage, and bitterness. We think impure thoughts and even act on them. We

cheat, we steal, we covet, and we lie. Sin has truly made us ugly.

Yet, despite our ugliness, despite the fall and our human condition, God looks at us and he does not see ugly

people. He looks at us and says, “Look at my beautiful people. I’ll send my son to die for them.” God sees your value. He

sees your worth. We are not ugly in his eyes. We are truly beautiful and he sent his son to be born a human being, to

experience the full human condition and at the end of it, die on a cross and rise from the dead. God sees the prize and it

is not some sparkly green nutcracker; it is everlasting life.

We are ugly sweaters, but God does not see us that way. To Him, we are the most beautiful sweaters in the

world, so beautiful that God would place his son in the midst of the ugliness and die for it. Christmas marks the

celebration of wise men bowing, lame men walking, blind men seeing, lost sons being found, dead men rising, finishing

with a march to the cross and victory over the grave. Christmas celebrates how all that started with a baby. I hope that in

your search for ugly sweaters that you see the beauty in them just as God sees the beauty in you.

Once upon a time, there was a young boy who received a basketball as a gift. It was a very fine basketball. It

was perfectly round without any imperfections in the surface. It was even autographed by some superstars of the game.

He was very proud of it.

One day, the young boy took his basketball to the park. To his great surprise, there were other young boys at the park, and they all wanted to play basketball with him. At first, they all took turns shooting baskets, dribbling and passing. But as he soon learned, they had a lot more in mind than that. They wanted to really play basketball, not just stand around shooting baskets and dribbling. He didn’t like the way they played. So he took his basketball and went home.

Dr. William Zambrano comments,

“Similarly, we all bring our unique mixture of talents into God’s ball game. We can elect to stay and play or we can take our ball and go home. If we leave, God will raise someone else to take our place. Perhaps that person’s basketball won’t have the perfect bounce or the perfect feel, but the game would go on. The difference would be that you simply wouldn’t play.”

Solomon wrote, “Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might” ECCLESIASTES 9:10. If you’re going to play basketball, do it with all your might. If you’re going to practice the piano, do it with all your might. If you are going to start a business, do it with all your might. And if you’re going to serve the Lord, do it with all your might. Then stand back and see what God will accomplish through you.

“Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for men… It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Christmas Basket Donations: A big thank you to everyone who has

provided new or gently used books and food items to support Trinity’s

Christmas baskets. We will continue to collect these items now through

December 13th. Please drop off your donation with your child’s teacher.

Sunday School Christmas Service: Trinity’s Preschool through High

school classes are scheduled to lead the 10:30am service on Sunday,

December 11th. The youth have been and will continue to practice for this

service in the chapel on Sundays beginning at 9:10am. If you would like to

have your child participate in the service please plan to have them attend

Sunday School now through December 11th. Thank you!

Jesus and Me (JAM)

is held on the 1st and 3

rd Thursday

Quilting Report

The Wednesday Morning Quilters continue to keep all hands busy. We accumulated 742 hours this Lutheran

World Relief shipping period, May 11, 2016 to October 28, 2016. We sent 48 quilts, five school kits and 63 pounds of

soap. Shipping to the warehouse in Minnesota was $47.25. We received an anonymous donation sufficient to cover

final-destination shipping charges for the 48 quilts and the five school kits. What a blessing! Interested in more

One quilt went with the youth on their mission trip to Mexico which was given to the family of the home that was

built. We were blessed in October to have another set of hands join our team and the return of one of our quilters after a

four month absence to be with her 101-year old mother!

Monday Eves LWML circle has chosen to support, in part, Saving Grace, a new home in Hillsboro for unwed

mothers. Our quilters are making baby quilts to assist with their needs.

We thank God as the shelves in the storeroom are slowly filled with completed quilts. And, THANK YOU to

those who have helped this ministry in their various & unique ways.

PRESCHOOL NEWS

Trinity Lutheran Preschool is now accepting registration forms for our Young 3’s class. This class is for

children who turn three September 1st thru December 31st during this year (2016). This class is on

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30pm -3:00pm. There is a $25 registration fee and the monthly tuition

is $120. Registration forms are available at the Information Center and church office.

Trinity Lutheran Preschool is having a raffle. Each class has produced a beautiful item that will be

raffled off at their Christmas program on December 14th. If you would like to support the preschool you

may purchase raffle tickets on December 11th. Tickets are being sold for $5 each or five for $20. You do

not have to be present at the time of the raffle to win.

Open enrollment for the 2017-18 preschool school year will begin in January. Look for more

information in the January Tidings.

3 Mrs. Sady’s 3’s class has had a wonderful couple months of Preschool! The students are such a blessing, growing

and developing so quickly… being their teacher is such a blessing. We have had fun learning about new shapes; we

have recently discussed a rectangle and made robots with rectangles. We also just finished up a unit on spiders; the

children had fun making spiders with their hands, and counting out 8 legs for their spider hats. They all looked so cute

with their spider hats on! Moving into the Holidays, we are excited for our Thanksgiving feast with Mrs. Wilson’s 3’s class

and also getting ready for our Christmas program at the School. The children have already been working on our songs;

I am always so amazed at how quickly they pick up on the words to the songs. We are thankful for so much, especially

such a wonderful class with wonderful parents and amazing kids!

4 Mrs. Williams’ fours class had a nice November. Our bible verse, Psalm 136:3,7,9 fueled our discussion of giving

thanks to God for his creation. We also learned God wants us to thank our family, community helpers, friends and

teachers too. We made many thank you cards and worked on a days of creation book. While learning about the letter

“F” we talked about fire safety. Some rules we learned were; how to Stop, Drop, and Roll if our clothes catch on fire,

crawling under smoke and we don’t play with matches. The children enjoyed going to the fire station in downtown

Hillsboro to learn more and fire fighters are our friends. We ended the month learning about the first Thanksgiving and

how the Pilgrim and Native Americans helped each other. We read many books including My 1st Thanksgiving and

Stone Soup. These stories reminded us that we should be kind and share with others. The Wednesday before

Thanksgiving the children made and shared a “Stone Snack” with Mrs. Wilson’s class.

Shadow of the Almighty The Life and Testament of Jim Elliot

By Elisabeth Elliot

This book is a bibliography of Jim Elliot and his growth as a Christian. Elisabeth Elliot, his wife, tells his story

after Jim Elliot is martyred with four other Christian missionaries in Ecuador on January 8, 1956. It shocked our nation at

the time. Elisabeth draws from Jim’s diaries and she shares what made her husband commit his total life to the Lord.

Jim Elliot was born and grew up in Portland, Oregon. He went to Benson High School and then to Wheaton

College in Illinois. At a young age, he knew he wanted to be a missionary who would go to remote areas and share

Jesus with those that had no written language and knew nothing about Him. The dangerous Auca tribe in the jungles of

Ecuador eventually murdered Jim. It is amazing that Elisabeth and other missionaries went back to the Auca tribe in

Ecuador later and most of the tribe became Christians.

This is a very interesting book that shares the life of Jim Elliot and his death. Elisabeth memorialized the story in

this book, “Shadow of the Almighty.” The title comes from Psalm 91:1: He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will

abide in the shadow of the Almighty. CHECK IT OUT!

Merry Christmas Remember that a gift should be treasured; not only the ones that are wrapped but ones that are bestowed upon you. Years ago, there was a very wealthy man who, with his devoted young son, shared a passion for art collecting. Together, they traveled around the world, adding only the finest art treasures to their collection. Priceless works by Picasso, Van Gogh, Monet and many others adorned the walls of the family estate. The widowed elder man looked on with satisfaction as his only child became an experienced art collector. The son's trained eye and sharp business mind caused his father to beam with pride as they dealt with art collectors around the world. One year, as winter approached, war engulfed the nation, and the young man left to serve his country. After only a few short weeks, his father received a telegram. His beloved son was missing in action. The art collector anxiously awaited more news, fearing he would never see his son again. Within days, his fears were confirmed. The young man had died while rushing a fellow soldier to a medic. Distraught and lonely, the old man faced the upcoming Christmas holidays with anguish and sadness. The joy of the season that he and his son had looked forward to would visit his house no longer. On Christmas morning, a knock on the door awakened the depressed old man. As he walked to the door, the masterpieces of art on the walls only reminded him that his son was not coming home. As he opened the door, he was greeted by a soldier with a large package in his hands. He introduced himself to the old man by saying, "I was a friend of your son. I was the one he was rescuing when he died. May I come in for a few moments? I have something to show you." As the two began to talk, the soldier told of how the man's son had told everyone of his, not to mention his father's, love of fine art. "I am no artist," said the soldier, "but I want to give you this." As the old man unwrapped the package, the paper gave way to reveal a portrait of the man's son. Though the world would never consider it the work of a genius, the painting featured the young man's face in striking detail. Overcome with emotion, the man thanked the soldier, promising to hang the picture above the fireplace. A few hours later, after the soldier had departed, the old man set about his task. True to his word, the painting went above the fireplace, pushing aside thousands of dollars worth of art. His task completed, the old man sat in his chair and spent Christmas gazing at the gift he had been given. During the days and weeks that followed, the man realized that, even though is son was no longer with him, the boy would live on because of those he had touched. He would soon learn that his son had rescued dozens of wounded soldiers before a bullet stifled his caring heart. As the stories of his son's gallantry continued to reach him, fatherly pride and satisfaction began to ease his grief. The painting of his son soon became his most prized possession, far eclipsing any interest in the pieces for which museums around the world clamored. He told his neighbors it was the greatest gift he had ever received. The following spring, the old man became ill and passed away. The art world was in anticipation that the collector's passing and his only son dead, those paintings would be sold at auction. According to the will of the old man, all art works would be auctioned on Christmas Day, the day he had received the greatest gift. The day soon arrived and art collectors from around the world gathered to bid on some of the world's most spectacular paintings. Dreams would be fulfilled this day; greatness would be achieved as many would claim, "I have the greatest collection." The auction began with a painting that was not on any museum's list. It was the painting of the man's son. The auctioneer asked for an opening bid, but the room was silent. "Who will open the bidding with $100?" he asked. Minutes passed, and no one spoke. From the back of the room came a voice, "Who cares about that painting? It's just a picture of his son." "Let's forget about it and move on to the good stuff," more voices echoed in agreement. "No, we have to sell this one first," replied the auctioneer. "Now, who will take the son?" Finally, a neighbor of the old man spoke. "Will you take ten dollars for the painting? That's all I have. I knew the boy; so I would like to have it. "I have ten dollars. Will anyone go higher?" asked the auctioneer. After more silence, the auctioneer said, "Going once, going twice, gone." The gavel fell. Cheers filled the room and someone exclaimed, "Now we can get on with it and we can bid on the real treasures!" The auctioneer looked at the audience and announced that the auction was over. Stunned disbelief quieted the room. Someone spoke up and asked, "What do you mean, it's over? We didn't come here for a picture of some old guy's son. What about all these paintings? There are millions of dollars worth of art here! I demand that you explain what is going on!" The auctioneer replied, "It's very simple. According to the will of the father, whoever takes the son...gets it all." Puts things into perspective, doesn't it? Just as those art collectors discovered on Christmas Day, the message is still the same: the love of a father, whose greatest joy came from his son who went away and gave his life rescuing others; and because of that father's love, whoever takes the Son gets it all. In life, many things will catch your eye, but only a few will catch your heart. --- Author Unknown
