Milk or Meat? by Michael J. Roth

With the end of another school year
coming to a close students and
parents are very grade conscious.
Common questions include, "So, what
did you get on the final? What grade
did you get in that class? Did you
pass?" Testing, evaluating and
measuring progress is a standard
expectation when it comes to growing
in knowledge through education.
Examining progress against some
standard is a good thing. It tells us if
we are learning and growing. If all of
this is good in academia, how much
more in the church and the Christian
life? By what standard should we be
judged in our knowledge and facility
with God's Word and the Christian
faith? In other words, are you growing
in your faith and life?
The writer to the Hebrews was
concerned about the lack of spiritual
maturity among the people to whom he
was writing. He says this in chapter 5:
11 About this we have much to say,
and it is hard to explain, since you
have become dull of hearing. 12 For
though by this time you ought to be
teachers, you need someone to teach
you again the basic principles of the
oracles of God. You need milk, not
solid food, 13 for everyone who lives
on milk is unskilled in the word of
righteousness, since he is a child. 14
But solid food is for the mature, for
those who have their powers of
discernment trained by constant
practice to distinguish good from evil.
I wonder if this passage could be
applied to any of us. Might there be
many among us who are spiritually
immature? We have to judge against
the standard of God's Word. There are at
least two measures we should consider.
1) How well do you know the Bible? I am
willing to bet most of us don't know the
Scriptures as well as we think we do. We
remember studying it in school or Catechism
instruction. We know that we had to
memorize a lot of Scripture verses and read
all those biblical stories. But, have you read
any of those stories lately? When was the
last time you committed a verse to memory?
How would you do with a basic catechism
test that might be administered to an 8th
grader? 2) How well do you live by the
Word? The Hebrew's writer was concerned
that the spiritually immature are unable to
discern good from evil. What about you? We
may think we know the difference, but do
we? In our society we are being told the
standard is our own judgment or
conscience. We are asked, "Well how does it
feel?" The deception of the devil is in
convincing us we naturally know what is
best based on our feelings or desires or
personal goals. This is exactly how he
deceived Adam and Eve in the Garden.
Often times it is not the discerning but the
doing that we have trouble with. We know
what is right if we take the time to think
things through, but we don't have the will to
do right.
If you can relate in any way to what I am
talking about here maybe the judgment of
"dull of hearing" made in Hebrews 5
applies. What is it that makes us dull of
hearing? It might be as simple as a lack of
love for the Word of God. Do you love God's
Word enough to read it daily?

MONDAY
Life Light Bible Study Ezra/Nehemiah
Ezra and Nehemiah describe the final events of the Old
Testament period, approximately four centuries before the birth
of Christ. Ezra begins with the decree of Cyrus, then recounts
the return of the exiles from Babylon and the rebuilding of the
Jerusalem temple. Nehemiah records his return to Jerusalem
with the third wave of returning exiles and concludes his book
with the rebuilding of the city's walls. Together, Ezra and
Nehemiah cover approximately a century of Israel's history,
during which God prepared His people for the coming of the
Messiah. In this study you will learn about: the meaning and
importance of true worship; the connection between Confession
and Absolution and amending one's life; and the fulfillment of
the temple in Christ, and through Christ, God's people. Lesson
1-Returning from Exile; Lesson 2-Return and Rebuild; Lesson
3-Worship Restored; Lesson 4-Teach and Pray; Lesson 5-
Restore Purity; Lesson 6-Courage to Speak; Lesson 7-Rebuild
the Wall; Lesson 8-Renew the Covenant; Lesson 9-Remember
Me, O God!

WEDNESDAY
SON-RISERS BIBLE STUDY – Lutheran Spirituality
Do Lutheran Christians have a spirituality? Indeed they do!
This adult Bible study series explores the rich depths of a
distinctively Lutheran spirituality that begins in Baptism and
is founded upon God's Word. There, the incarnate, crucified,
and resurrected Lord proclaims His victory over sin, death,
and the devil, and from there flows the proclamation of His
Gospel and the administration of His Sacraments. It is
through these means presented within the liturgy of His
Church that Christ communicates not merely spiritual
energies, an emotional high, a method of reasoning, or a
stringent morality, but truly Himself—God in human flesh.
LEADER: Pastor Michael Roth

Do you love it enough to listen intently to a
sermon or participate in a Bible study? If
you are in the Word, you do attend
worship and listen to sermons do you
apply these words to your life? Do you
believe the preacher is speaking to you?
Do you believe that God's Word is living
and active and speaks with the Spirit's
power in every age, to every person, in
every circumstance of life? Furthermore,
reading and hearing the Word is only the
beginning. Jesus said, blessed are they that
hear the word of God, and keep it. (Lk.
11:28) The Word that is heard is to be
incorporated into our thinking, speaking
and doing. That is why Paul urges the
Colossians; Let the word of Christ dwell in
you richly. (Col. 3:16)
When students aren't doing well in school
the teacher will threaten them with
"Summer School." I am thinking we could
all use some summer school. Wouldn't
these summer months be a great time to
read the Word, get involved in a Bible class
or review your Catechism? Let me
challenge you to set these as your summer
goal, growth and maturity in the Word. It is
time for us to move from milk to meat.

Summer is here and I am so excited! I love
summer here at Trinity. We have so much
planned for all our kids. We get to be outside and
enjoying the wonderful weather and all St. Joe
has to offer. Our first two new rooms are ready to
be used and we are looking forward to the
changes they will bring to our program. Summer
school age care has a very busy summer
planned. I am excited for the kids. They will be so
busy, they'll be surprised when school starts
again, time will fly. Hopefully by the end of the
summer we will have our new infant room too.
That will bring us one step closer to a fully
renovated ECC. Thank you all for your prayers
and support of this project. We can’t wait to see
the next phase in action.

WOMEN'S BOOK CLUB
WOMEN'S BOOK CLUB
This month we are going to visit the world of reality TV. The Book of Essie by
Meghan Maclean Weir. It sounds fun! A debut novel of family, fame, and religion
that tells the emotionally stirring, wildly captivating story of the seventeen-year-old
daughter of an evangelical preacher, star of the family's hit reality show, and the
secret pregnancy that threatens to blow their entire world apart. Esther Ann Hicks--
Essie--is the youngest child on Six for Hicks,a reality television phenomenon. She's
grown up in the spotlight, both idolized and despised for her family's fire-and-
brimstone brand of faith. When Essie's mother, Celia, discovers that Essie is
pregnant, she arranges an emergency meeting with the show's producers: Do they
sneak Essie out of the country for an abortion? Do they pass the child off as Celia's?
Or do they try to arrange a marriage--and a ratings-blockbuster wedding?
Meanwhile, Essie is quietly pairing herself up with Roarke Richards, a senior at her
school with a secret of his own to protect. As the newly formed couple attempt to sell
their fabricated love story to the media--through exclusive interviews with an
infamously conservative reporter named Liberty Bell--Essie finds she has questions
of her own: What was the real reason for her older sister leaving home? Who can
she trust with the truth about her family? And how much is she willing to sacrifice to
win her own freedom?

The Adventurers and Explorers classrooms are nearly ready to use. Infant Room construction will begin as soon as that
happens. We have raised 92% of the $400,000 earmarked for this project and cannot begin phase 2 until all funding is in
place. Please make sure that you are keeping up with your pledge or join the Campaign and make a pledge if you have not
yet done so. One time gifts are welcome as well. As always, we ask that you keep our Capital Campaign in your prayers.
God is working faithfully through you, His people. To God be the glory.
In 1970, a special Ascension Day Worship Service was celebrated May 7 at 7:30pm in church.
Under the direction of Music Director, Mr. Walter Gresens, Rev. Erwin M. Meyer was at the organ
while Mr. Frederick Schultz accompanied on the harpsichord. The choir was the combined choirs of
Trinity Lutheran Church and Christ Lutheran Church while soloists were Mrs. Irene Edinger, Mrs.
Anita Schultz and Mr. Robert Lange. A seventeen piece Chamber Orchestra from Valparaiso
University added to the wonderful music of Handel's "the Messiah." What a glorious experience
this was for all those attending.
Music is so meaningful. In 1951 a large Lutheran Hour Rally was conducted in our local high
school gymnasium in June. Special musical selections were rendered by a mass chorus of all choirs
of Missouri Synod and Wisconsin Synod congregations of southwestern Michigan. Children from
grades 4 to 8 from the various congregations formed a mass children's chorus.
In 1952, a float was entered in the Blossom Parade for the purpose of advertising and inviting
people to the Lutheran Hour Rally to be held in June of that year – this year at Dickenson
Stadium. 1953 was another year of float building which was made by people from our
congregation. That float depicted a positive and uplifting theme. In 1955 the Lutheran Layman's
League sponsored the float. I'm not sure if after that year Trinity sponsored another float in our
Blossom Parade.
Also in 1952, the Board of Education encouraged our director of Music, Mr. O. C. Scheerger, to
conduct a summer music school at our church for all those students who would be interested.
There would be no charge to the students.

Summer is here and wonderful
healthy fresh produce is more
abundant. Did you know... that each
year roughly one out of six Americans
(that's 48 million people) get sick,
128,000 are hospitalized, and 3,000
die from foodborne diseases. The
following tips about fresh produce are
very important to help keep us safe
from being a victim of Foodborne
Diseases.
Reducing Your Risk of Foodborne
Illness from Fresh Produce Buying Tips
for Fresh Produce
 Purchase produce that is not
bruised or damaged.
 When selecting fresh cut produce
choose only those items that are
refrigerated or surrounded by ice
 Bag fresh fruits and vegetables
separately from meat products
when packing them to take home.
Storage Tips for Fresh Produce
 Certain perishable fresh fruits and
vegetables can be best maintained
by storing in a clean refrigerator at
a temperature of 40° F or below.
All produce that is purchased pre-
cut or peeled should be
refrigerated within two hours to
maintain both quality and safety.
Preparation Tips for Fresh Produce
 Many precut, bagged produce
items like lettuce are pre-washed.
If so, it will be stated on the
packaging.
 All unpackaged fruits and
vegetables should be thoroughly
washed before eating.
 Begin with clean hands. Wash
your hands with warm water and
soap before and after preparing
fresh produce.
 Cut away damaged/bruised areas
before preparing or eating.
Produce that looks rotten should be
discarded.
Even if you plan to peel the produce
before eating, it's still important to
wash it first.
 Washing fruits and vegetables with
soap or detergent or using
commercial produce washes is not
recommended.
Scrub firm produce, such as melons
and cucumbers, with a clean
produce brush.
Drying produce with a clean cloth
towel or paper towel may further
reduce bacteria that may be present.
Keep fruits and vegetables that will be
eaten raw separate from other foods
such as raw meat, poultry or seafood -
and from kitchen utensils used for those
products. In addition, be sure to wash
cutting boards, dishes, utensils and
counter tops with hot water and soap
between the preparation of raw meat
and the preparation of produce. For
added protection, kitchen sanitizers can
be used on cutting boards and counter
tops periodically. Try a solution of one
teaspoon of chlorine bleach to one
quart of water.
Forgetting about food safety is a recipe
for disaster, but following four simple
steps can help keep your family safe
from food poisoning at home.

Trinity Lutheran Church & School
Some disciples of John the Baptist were questioning him
about the baptism and preaching of Jesus. Many
disciples were going to Jesus instead of John the Baptist.
John the Baptist answers: "A person cannot receive even
one thing unless it is given him from heaven" (John
3:27).
John the Baptist says this to show that Jesus, His
teaching, and His baptism are from heaven. God
provides everything we have in body and soul.
We are taught this in the meaning of the Apostles'
Creed in the Small Catechism.
In the First Article of the Creed, we learn that God has
made us and everything in the universe.
"He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all
my members, my reason and all my senses, and still
takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and
shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and
children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and
daily provides me with all that I need to support this
body and life. He defends me against all danger and
guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does
only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without
any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty
to thank and praise, serve and obey Him."
In the Second Article of the Creed, we learn that God
sent His Son, Jesus, to humble Himself by taking the
form of a servant.
In so doing, He "has redeemed me, a lost and
condemned person, purchased and won me from all
sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not
with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and
with His innocent suffering and death, that I may be His
own and live under Him in His kingdom and serve Him
in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and
blessedness, just as He is risen from the dead, lives and
reigns to all eternity."
In the Third Article of the Creed, we learn that the fruits
of what Jesus Christ, the Son of God, did are given to us
through the work of the Holy Spirit in the Church.
"That I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in
Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy
Spirit has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with
His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith. In the
same way He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies
the whole Christian church on earth, and keeps it with
Jesus Christ in the one true faith. In this Christian
church He daily and richly forgives all my sins and the
sins of all believers. On the Last Day He will raise me
and all the dead, and give eternal life to me and all
believers in Christ."
Indeed, "a person cannot receive even one thing unless
it is given him from heaven."
But how easy is this for us to forget? How easy is it for
us to think that what we have in life is because we have
earned it?
How easy is it for us to forget that all our skills – the
abilities of our hands and minds, the ethic to work
diligently, and the desire to improve – is given to us
from heaven, just as John the Baptist said?
How easy is it for us to forget that it is Christ alone, and
the work of the Holy Spirit, that reveals His salvation to
us, delivers it to us, and that none of this is our doing?
Sure, we have responsibility for coming to church, for
delving into God's Holy Word, and for praying without
ceasing.
But even these responsibilities are given to us from
heaven. These duties are not earned; they are given in
response to what He has accomplished for us.
Everything we have, and everything we are – in both
body and soul – are gifts from God in heaven.
Let us then respond in thanksgiving and give back to
Him as He asks – with a first-fruits, generous proportion
offering of what He has given to us.

Faith in Verse – Cords of Love
(LSB 453) by Bob Lawrence
Your cords of love, my Savior,
Bind me to You forever,
I am no longer mine.
To you I gladly tender
All that my life can render
And all I have to You resign. (Upon The Cross Extended, verse 6)
In verse six of this hymn we find an novel picture of our relationship with our Savior. The love which
led Christ to suffer on the cross is alive and well in this verse as it literally ties us to our risen Lord. It
is as if we are strapped to Christ like someone tied to a parachutist and plunges towards the earth.
This image reflects the primary importance of our ties to Christ who is our sole hope in life. Without
Him life is just a long fall that leads to our doom.
Taking this image further, the person strapped to the parachutist yields all control to the person in
charge. It is the parachutist who decides when to release the chute, not the passenger. So it is in our
life of faith. Once strapped to Christ, we yield our life decisions to Him. We trust that He always
knows what is best for us and gladly accept whatever path He chooses for us.
And as the verse comes to an end it is just not control that we yield to Christ in this tight relationship,
but "all our life can render." The skills we have, the love we share, and the resources we possess are
all resigned to the one to whom we are strapped.
Giving up so much control may seem pretty frightening at first, but when you consider plunging
through life towards eternity without God's love and direction, we find ourselves praying for the Spirit
to draw the cords even tighter.
