HYMN #664 Morning Has Broken Bunessan (See music in bulletin)

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of fruitful labor, work sometimes brings out the worst in us. At home, at school, in the workplace, even in our relationship with you, we too easily question what others do and get, instead of taking care of our own business. Take away our bitterness. Teach us to care for our fellows as we would have them care for us. Give us grateful hearts, we pray.

(Silence is kept for personal confession)

Amen.

DECLARATION OF PARDON L: Hear the good news: what we do matters, but our salvation is God's doing. God hears our complaints, but also our prayers. P: God does not forget us. In Christ's name, we are forgiven. L: Let us worship God! GLORIA PATRI Hymn #581 (See music in bulletin)

DOXOLOGY Hymn #606 (See music in bulletin)

SPECIAL MUSIC Joyful, Joyful, We Adore Thee Ludwig Van Beethovan Arr. John Innes SCRIPTURE READING (NRSV): Matthew 18:21-35

21 Then Peter came and said to him, “Lord, if another member of the church[a] sins against me, how often should I forgive? As many as seven times?” 22 Jesus said to him, “Not seven times, but, I tell you, seventy-seven[b] times. 23 “For this reason the kingdom of heaven may be compared to a king who wished to settle accounts with his slaves. 24 When he began the reckoning, one who owed him ten thousand talents[c] was brought to him; 25 and, as he could not pay, his lord ordered him to be sold, together with his wife and children and all his possessions, and payment to be made. 26 So the slave fell on his knees before him, saying, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you everything.’ 27 And out of pity for him, the lord of that slave released him and forgave him the debt. 28 But that same slave, as he went out, came upon one of his fellow slaves who owed him a hundred denarii;[d] and seizing him by the throat, he said, ‘Pay what you owe.’ 29 Then his fellow slave fell down and pleaded with him, ‘Have patience with me, and I will pay you.’ 30 But he refused; then he went and threw him into prison until he would pay the debt. 31 When his fellow slaves saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and reported to their lord all that had taken place. 32 Then his lord summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked slave! I forgave you all that debt because you pleaded with me. 33 Should you not have had mercy on your fellow slave, as I had mercy on you?’ 34 And in anger his lord handed him over to be tortured until he would pay his entire debt. 35 So my heavenly Father will also do to every one of you, if you do not forgive your brother or sister[e] from your heart.”

SERMON Forgiven, But Not Forgiving ? Reverend Dr. Sue Marie Baskette

CONFESSION OF FAITH We trust in God the Holy Spirit, everywhere the giver and renewer of life. The Spirit justifies us by grace through faith, sets us free to accept ourselves and to love God and neighbor, and binds us together with all believers in the one body of Christ, the Church. The same Spirit who inspired the prophets and apostles rules our faith and life in Christ through Scripture, engages us through the Word proclaimed, claims us in the waters of baptism, feeds us with the bread of life and the cup of salvation, and calls women and men to all ministries of the church. In a broken and fearful world the Spirit gives us courage to pray without ceasing, to witness among all peoples to Christ as Lord and Savior, to unmask idolatries in Church and culture, to hear the voices of peoples long silenced, and to work with others for justice, freedom, and peace. In gratitude to God, empowered by the Spirit, we strive to serve Christ in our daily tasks and to live holy and joyful lives, even as we watch for God's new heaven and new earth, praying, “Come, Lord Jesus!” With believers in every time and place, we rejoice that nothing in life or in death can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. Amen.

HYMN Holy Is His Name John Michael Talbot Keith Getty, Kristyn Getty, Ian Hannah

My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord And my spirit exalts in God my Savior

For He has looked with mercy on my loneliness And my name will be forever exalted

For the mighty God has done great things for me And His mercy will reach from age to age

And holy, holy, holy is His name

He has mercy in every generation

He has revealed His power and His glory He has cast down the mighty in their arrogance

And has lifted up the meek and the lonely He has come to help His servant Israel

He remembered His promise to our fathers

And holy, (holy) holy, holy is His name Holy, holy, holy is His name

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING AND INTERCESSION, CONCLUDING WITH THE LORD’S PRAYER

The Lord’s Prayer Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy Name.

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done

On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread;

And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors;

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power

And the glory, forever. Amen.

My Legacy Story by Tom Benson Most people in our generation have experienced economic depressions, wars, and inflation from time to time. But, for the most part, life has been good and the church has been our joy and constant support. We have managed to accumulate some assets with the goal of having enough income to live comfortably during our lifetime and the lifetime of our spouse. Fortunately, it is likely that most of us will not die broke and there will be assets left behind. So, what happens to those assets? Do you wish to leave the decision to your heirs or the government, or would you rather make that decision yourself while still alive? I think most of us would prefer the latter. We also believe it is important to support God’s work leaving a continuing legacy after we have passed. That is why a written legacy statement is so important.

Page 12: Trinity · Trinity holds a zoom Sunday morning fellowship time from 9:30 AM to 9:58 AM as a lead into Sunday worship. In order to participate, simply contact the church office at

For my legacy I had several goals: 1. I wanted to provide a continued source of income for my two sons for at least

twenty years after my death. And I didn’t want to give them the entire inheritance in

a lump sum.

2. I wanted to leave the remaining assets to the charities of my choice and not leave

the decision to my heirs. This would include the church and God’s work of course.

3. I wanted to have the assets in my estate professionally managed.

4. I wanted to pay the least amount of taxes possible.

I was able to accomplish this through a testamentary charitable remainder trust. In simple terms this means that when I die my assets are transferred to and managed by the Arizona Community Foundation. The Foundation provides income to my sons and when they die the remaining assets are given to the charities I designate, that includes the church. This is only one technique for the management of your assets upon death. If you would like to discuss other possibilities unique to your personal situation, please contact me, Dwayne Warrick, Barb Poland, or Larry Culver, or of course your attorney. The important thing is to make it a priority. and not to put it off. God bless you all. Tom Benson

PER CAPITA

As Presbyterians, we agree to participate in the life of the wider church by serving Presbytery, Synod, and General Assembly. One of the ways we do this is through our Per

Capita apportionment which is how we mutually share the cost of coming together to discern the Spirit's leading for the future. Each member is responsible for their share of this cost. The Presbytery of Grand Canyon approved the 2020 Per Capita apportionment at $37.35 per member. Per Capita gifts should be made payable to Trinity and will be forwarded on to the Presbytery.

For additional information on the above, please contact Tom at (928)717-1037, [email protected], Larry at (928) 776-9951, [email protected], Barbara at [email protected], or Dwayne at (928) 445-1673, [email protected].
