Sisters and brothers in Christ, Welcome to the New Year!

Let me begin with a word of thanksgiving for the work of the transition team, the council and especially your call committee in trusting in the Holy Spirit and bringing us to this new partnership! It is a privilege and blessing to be called as your pastor and I look forward to sharing the ministry of the Gospel and the discovery of God’s presence in our work and in our world.

As we enter 2017 we have an opportunity to join with our Lutheran brothers and sisters around the world in marking the 500th anniversary of the Reformation and the courageous, spirit-filled work of Martin Luther in recovering the bible for the laity, opening the Lord’s Table, announcing the truth about grace, celebrating the priesthood of all believers and reminding us of our baptismal vocation to love God and neighbor through our daily work, both ordinary and remarkable.

You have worked hard together to sustain this congregation through a challenging couple of years. You have been faith-filled and hopeful as you prayed, re-examined, re-organized and imagined your way into a new future.

Now, as we enter into this year, we will spend time not just celebrating the Reformation of the church but celebrating our own reformation as we reclaim our own identity as Trinity and Lutheran and Church. A very particular body of Christ, called by the Spirit to be church for the sake of the world in this particular community, at this particular time. We celebrate our history, we live vibrantly our present and we cast a broad vision for a bright future as God’s people in the St. Croix Valley.

I look forward to many conversations, deep listening and holy discernment as we begin our shared adventure in Christ. Prayers and blessings for an abundant new year.

Yours in Christ,

Pastor Chris

“…seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the Lord on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare…For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope. Then when you call upon me and come and pray to me, I will hear you. When you search for me, you will find me…”

–Jeremiah 29:7; 11-13

Council will appoint up to 9 voting delegates from Trinity to the Conference Assem-blies in February and Synod Assembly in May. If you are interested in representing our congregation (you need to be a member of Trinity), please contact council at [email protected].

Conference AssembliesSaturday, February 11, 2017 | 8 a.m.–NoonRedeemer Lutheran Church (3770 Bellaire Ave. White Bear Lake, MN 55110)Conference assemblies are held annually and lay the foundations for work at the synod assembly in May. Voting members from congregations in the six conferences, chaired by a dean, gather for a keynote address and then meet in individual conferences to conduct business, which includes the elections of synodical officers and committee members and, every three years, voting members to the churchwide assembly.

The Saint Paul Synod Assembly gathers annually in the springtime. As the highest legislative authority of the synod, delegates from congregations engage in conversation and vote on resolutions, synod council and committee nominations, in addition to other synod business. 2017 Synod AssemblyThe 2017 Synod Assembly will be held Friday, May 19 and Saturday, May 20 at Prince of Peace Lutheran in Burnsville.

Our new year promises to be one of growth and renewal. We are delighted to have Pastor Chris and Pastor Karri with us as we welcome this new year.

Not only did we welcome Chris and Karri at our December council meeting, we also received a visit from Bishop Patricia Lull of the Saint Paul Area Synod. Bishop Lull brought greetings from the synod and discussed the many ways in which the congregations in our synod support each other through the synod, as well as supporting church-wide mission and ministry through the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America. Council members expressed their deep appreciation to synod staff for their ongoing assistance, particularly over the past two years as we sought interim pastoral leadership and con-ducted our call process for our new lead pastor. Bishop Lull asked the council to identify some of the ways we see God working in and through our congre-gation. There were many responses, including activating lay leaders; our music and worship ministry; outreach missions; the faithfulness, commit-ment and resiliency of our congrega-tion through challenging changes; our children, youth and family programs; and more. Bishop Lull again offered the continuing support of the synod. It is our hope to continue to grow our relationship with the synod and other synod congregations.

The council also set aside dates in January to have a council retreat to allow deeper discussion on several topics, including creation and imple-mentation of ministry teams as pro-posed in last year’s Transition Team report, observation of the 500th anniversary of Martin Luther’s posting of the 95 theses (which sparked the Protestant reformation movement as well as the creation of the Lutheran Church), and developing a strategic planning process for Trinity to guide us through the coming years, as we prepare for our 150th anniversary. What will be our direction? Where is God calling us in ministry and mission? There will be opportunities for your participation in this process, so please watch for addi-tional information.

We also welcomed newly elected council member Arba-Della Beck and elected officers at our December council meeting. Gail Olson will again serve as

From the Congregational Council by Gail Olson, President

president, Doug Johnson as vice presi-dent, and Tom Olsen as treasurer. Mel Sullivan will serve as secretary.

We enter this new year with gratitude for the many ways in which you do mission and ministry: offering a kind-ness to a stranger rather than looking the other way… providing an Angel Tree gift for someone you will never know… teaching Sunday School even when the kids don’t seem to be listen-ing… painting offices and renewing bathrooms in the church without even being asked… serving lutfisk even though you would never eat it… adding your wisdom and time to a committee… providing music for our services… ush-ering…. being supportive to someone in need… being part of our worship. All these ways and more. Thank you!

As our theme for this month’s Trinity Today, we look to Jesus’ calling of the first disciples as told in Luke 5:1-11. Everyday fishermen witnessed the full-ness of Jesus’ love as their boats were filled with fish. They were so grateful and blessed by the event, Luke tells us, that “When they had brought their boats to shore, they left everything and followed him.” We at Trinity also have been blessed. How will we respond in 2017?

God bless you, every one!

As the current year comes to a close and the new year dawns, we invite you to financially support Trinity’s critical and life-giving work in two ways.

First, please fulfill your 2016 pledge by Sunday, January 1.

Second, please submit your 2017 pledge, if you have not already done so.

It is a spiritual discipline to commit your full self—including your money—to God. Pledges hold you accountable to that commitment. Giving to God’s holy work strengthens your relationship with God as well as supports your faith community.

To date, we have received pledges totaling $727,355 toward the $1.3 million approved by the congregation at our annual meeting. This amount is needed to keep our shared ministry of the Gospel growing and vibrant.

You will find 2017 pledge cards in the pews, at the Information Desk in the Commons (outside the Church Office) or visit www.trinitylc.org > then click GIVE > then click Your Giving Plan. Questions can be directed to Eric Trosdahl at [email protected].

Once you have completed your online pledge form, if you would like to enroll in automated giving at Trinity, please visit www.trinitylc.org > then click GIVE > then click Automated Giving.

Thank you for your commitment to Trinity Lutheran Church and our mission to love, transform and serve.

A New Year’s Challenge or Two(from an article by Don Hall, DrPH, CHES, and Wellsource Staff, 1/1/04)

These 10 simple things can help you feel good and improve your quality of life this New year. Choose one, or two, or all and enjoy the benefits of a healthier lifestyle in 2017! If you complete ALL the challenges, you may have to develop some bad habits next year just to stay humble!

1. Walk, bike, jog, swim, dance, or play for 30 minutes every day. Physical activity stimulates the body, mind, and soul.

2. Drink water in place of a soft drink or a beer. You will save about 150 calories each time you do. If you did this every day for a year you would save over 50,000 calories or the equivalent of 15 pounds of body fat. Just imagine how good you'd look NEXT New Year!

3. Choose more unrefined and plant based foods. They will help lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, and whole grains form the basis of healthy eating.

4. Choose healthy carbohydrates. Replace white bread, white rice, sweets and snack foods with whole grain bread, brown rice, fruits, vegetables, lentils, and beans.

5. Limit time in front of the TV to an hour a day during the week and 2 hours on weekends. Look for other fun physical activities, hobbies, and learning opportunities that strengthen your body, mind, and spirit.

6. Strengthen relationships. Plan something special every month so you can spend quality time with family or friends. Enjoy the time together as you become a better spouse, parent, grandparent, and friend.

7. Relax. Have fun every day. Enjoy healthy pleasures — a warm bath, listening to relaxing music, nature, a new hobby, or playing with your kids, grandkids, or pet.

8. Do something special for someone each day. Surprise somebody! Give a deserved compliment. Help someone

who needs assistance. Congratulate a friend. Give a gift. Be generous with you time. Make someone else's life better and see what it does for your own life.

9. See your doctor and ask for help in meeting health needs and getting preventative checks. Asking for help, when needed, is a sign of strength, not weakness. Get a benefit for all that health insurance you pay!

10. Plan a quiet time each day. Read a book, meditate, pray, plan your life. Stay in touch with your inner needs. Set

personal goals. Keep a journal of your progress. Celebrate small achievements. Keep your life open to new insights and experiences.

Wishing you a healthy, fun-filled year in 2017!

M I S S I O N S O U T R E A C H

Recently members of the Outreach Missions board have had the opportunity to meet Gilo, a nursing assistant at Good Samaritan Care Center who Pastor Deb met while leading worship at the facility. Gilo Agwagora , is an Anuak refugee from Ethiopia and is trained as a Presbyterian minister. Gilo and his family, which includes six children, live in Stillwater. He fled persecution and war and was in the U.S. for three years before his family could join him, which is not uncommon for refugees.

Anuak refugees come from south Ethiopia and Sudan and have fled their homes due to the ongoing Civil War for the past 30 years. (See map at right.) Many families fled to large refugee camps in Kenyan where they wait for many years to be assigned a new country that will accept them. Refugees do not get a choice about what country they are assigned to. Family reunification is a goal and if fortunate they may arrive in the same country or state.

Gilo is now trying to help the recently arrived Anuak refugees as a translator, navigator of our complex health and education systems, gives rides, and also leads worship at a church in St. Paul where many families are living. Families arriving in Minnesota have an urgent need was warm winter clothes and boots. Thank you to all the Trinity members who so generously donated warm jackets, hats, and mittens during December!

Refugee resettlement happens after a long and complicated process. Here in Minnesota, there are three designated resettlement organizations; Lutheran Social Services, Catholic Charities, and the International Institute. They are the organizations that meet the plane, and help families find housing, assist with paperwork, enroll in English classes so parents can get an entry level job that requires limited English. Many refugees in Minnesota work in food processing plants in greater Minnesota.

Refugees have left everything near and dear to them to save their family’s lives. They arrive here with no more than 40 pounds of personal belongings. The resettlement agencies often cannot provide all the very basic things like warm clothes, beds, and dishes, and rely on the community to help. I continue to marvel at the resilience, faith, and determination to start over in a new country and community they have not seen and know little if anything about.

Heid Kriesel White has met a family this week who have just arrived in the last two weeks after 12 years in a refugee camp. She shares their story:

Gilo called me on Tuesday and told me that there was a new family that had just arrived to Minnesota two weeks ago. The resettlement agency did not have an apartment readily available, so the family had spent one week in a motel, and had just moved into a basement apartment in North Minneapolis. The family includes husband and wife, 7 and 18 year-old daughters, and an 11 year-old son. I quickly pulled some clothes together from my house, and then some more coats and blankets from the church of items that had been donated.

An immigrant who has been in Minnesota for 20 years named Obang, who served as our interpreter, brought my son and I to the family at their North Minneapolis apartment. The family was so very thankful for our donations, offered us a glass water, and told us how thankful they were to be here. The father said many times in broken English how he cannot wait to find a job, any job, but he cannot wait to work. We sat with the family as their daughter and son tried on snow pants, shoes and coats. After we said goodbye, we headed back to Stillwater.

On the drive Obang told us his story of coming to America. He had come when he was 15 years old. As a 10 year-old boy, he walked across South Sudan through Ethiopia to a refugee camp in Kenya, the same place where these new refugees have just arrived from. Obang went to 11th and 12th grades at Roseville High School, and then earned an Accounting Degree from Bethel University. He currently works for Marriot Hotels. He lived with his older brother in Minnesota when he first came, who was his legal guardian. His family suffered tremendously during the war and his story of resilience is amazing.

It was a privilege for my son and I to meet these families, and to get just a very small understanding of what they had gone through to come to America. Their graciousness for the gifts they received was inspiring. We were able to experience firsthand the true meaning of Christmas.

The Outreach Missions board is discerning what next steps will be. More to come. Thank you to all for your support!

Welcome New Neighbors! by Heidi Kriesel White and Renae Oswald-Anderson, Outreach Missions Board

ETHIOPIA This landlocked country is located on the horn of Africa and surrounded by countries with much turmoil such as Somalia and Sudan. Refugees from South Sudan were located in camps in Ethiopia. Displaced from their homeland and living under squalid conditions. Persecuted by both the governing groups in their homeland and by other tribes in Ethiopia. Some have just recently received refugee status to come to the U.S. and Minnesota.

During December the Missions Outreach Board asked the congregation to donate winter wear for refugee families that are new to Minnesota. The outpouring of generous donations was overflowing at Trinity! Items were organized on the tables in the Garen Room and then families were transported to Trinity to “shop” for winter clothes.

A cup of coffee or a spot of tea, a cup of hot chocolate or a glass of cool lemonade, wine and cheese or beer and peanuts, milk and cookies or a refreshing glass of water? It depends on the weather, the time of day, your tastes and traditions, your guests. At Trinity on Sunday morning, it’s coffee or lemonade and cookies. We expect it. We appreciate it. We need you to make it happen.

We are all God’s ministers of hospitality. It’s up to us to welcome God’s people with a warm smile and a handshake, a bulletin, an offering plate, a cup of coffee.

Warm thanks to all who have chosen an entire month or two or a certain Sunday every month to be a greeter, usher, or coffee maker and server. You are the very young and the very old. You are the long-time members and the brand new members. You are Trinity’s ministers of hospitality. You have “the virtue of a great soul that cares for the whole universe through the ties of humanity.” (EncyclopIédie, 1765)

Welcoming people to God’s house is part of the mission and ministry of Trinity. Contact me to schedule your turn. Thanks!

On December 14, 9th grade Confirmation completed a service project tying six fleece blankets and putting together over 80 hygiene kits. These resources will be given to Community Thread and distributed to Canvas Health and Valley Outreach to serve families in the St. Croix community. We respond to God’s gift of grace by loving and serving our neighbor!

Sponsor a Mexico Missionary!Mexico Mission 2017 is in full swing and high school students will continue to look for sponsors through early March. Students will be present on Sunday mornings in their green trip shirts (with the build logo at right), but if you are unable to be present during this time and would still like to support a student, notify Kelsey Crusinberry and she will get you connected to someone. You can also sponsor a student online at www.trinitylc.org > then select REGISTER > then select 2017 Mexico Mission Online Sponsorship. Have a hammock laying around? If you have a hammock from a previous Mexico Mission experience and would like to donate it back to Trinity, we are looking for a handful of hammocks for students this year. Hammocks can be dropped off in the Church Office. Do you have medical experience and enjoy missions and young adults? We are looking for a female medic to join us on Mexico Mission 2017. Medics help lead a small group of high schoolers, as well as serve the team with any medical needs that may arise. For more information, contact Kelsey Crusinberry at [email protected] or call the Church Office at 651-439-7400.

“I have held many things in my hands, and I have lost them all; but whatever I have placed in God’s hands, that I still possess.” – Martin Luther

Martin Luther was a priest, monk, composer and a German professor of Theology. He rejected several teachings and practices of the Catholic Church and was excommunicated by the Pope. In October of 1517 he posted his ideas and

writings, the Ninety-Five Theses, on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. Those who identified with his teachings were eventually called Lutherans. 500 years later the ELCA is observing this event that resulted in reforms in Christian teaching and practice called the Protestant Reformation.

Do you want to know more about the life of Martin Luther? The Trinity Library has a wealth of resources on Luther’s Life. There are several biographies that provide information on his early life, his views on Spiritual Formation, his career and accomplishments. Martin Luther: The Man And His Work (284.1 VONL)

or Luther The Reformer: The Story Of The Man And His Career (284.1 KITT) capture the story of the Reformation. Children may advance their knowledge with Meet Martin Luther: Exploring Luther’s Small catechism. (284.1 LUTH).

Martin Luther based his theology in the Bible, and he also studied human reality. Pastor D. Monge wrote Life-Changing Faith For Today: Why Luther’s Theology Still Matters (248.1 MONG) It is directed to people who are curious, desire to grow in faith, ‘and want to use Luther’s life and teaching as a prism through which to view the Christian reality.” (Marty) Familiar phrases as ‘The Word Alone’, ‘What Does This Mean?’, or ‘Means of Grace’, may cause you to consider more deeply your Lutheran Heritage. You will find additional learning on these topics in the 284 or 230 shelves in the library. Perhaps you want something that is light hearted or enriches your memories. Try reading Growing Up Lutheran: What Does This Mean? (284.1 MART)

Martin Luther’s work had great impact on 16th century Germany and his influence impacts Christians today. He translated the Bible from Latin to the dialect of the German people, making it

more accessible to the common people. In the 21st century there are numerous translations of the Bible such as The Message or The Green Bible. Check the Reference section for several translations of the Bible. Luther also wrote numerous hymns that he believed aided in the development of faith. When you sing ‘A Mighty Fortress Is Our God’ or ‘From Heaven Above To Earth I Come’, think of Martin Luther the songwriter. The Trinity Library also hosts a series of hymnals found on the shelf marked 264. Luther’s marriage set the precedence for clerical marriage that allowed Protestant clergy to marry. Treu’s biography, Katherine von Bora Luther’s Wife (921 BORA), tells the story of her life as a nun and her marriage to Luther.

Martin Luther’s life also has impact on our Trinity Library! The Library resources reflect his teachings. Some examples include: Prayer — “To be a Christian without prayer is no more possible than to be alive without breathing.” Scripture — “The Bible is alive, it speaks to me; it has feet, it runs after me; it has hands, it lays hold of me” Faith — “I know not the way God leads me, but well do I know my Guide.”

You are welcomed to visit the Trinity Library and use the resources to help you observe the 500th Anniversary of the Lutheran Reformation!

Our journey of discovery about the living process of how the Bible came to be continues this new year!

I’ve waited for this class at Trinity over 40 years! Every week we’re uncovering new nuggets of understanding. We’ve come to realize how the Bible is a living document that has changed and continues to change throughout time. Then as now, there were divisions among people based on differing needs and priorities which each used different translations. These religious divisions changed in value and impact as life, history, and laws changed.

Continues in January...

Lifelong Learning: What’s the story behind the Bible? Sundays at 10:30 a.m. in the Living Room

The best part of learning at Trinity is that we’re learning and exploring in community with one another! Each of us has a different perspective which can be freely shared and honored by others. Whether this is your first or your 31st Bible study, you are welcome to join in the conversation!

So far this fall we’ve explored these questions: how did the Bible begin? How and why did the Jewish Scripture differ from the Christian Bible? How was each canon assembled? How difficult was it to accurately copy the old manuscripts? What difference did it make to be chosen by Constantine in the 4th century as

the official Roman religion--either positively or negatively? What was the ebb and flow of each religion or translation based on acceptance of differing principles and political wrangling? Fascinating!

If you’re looking for some mind-expanding knowledge or just a community of learners, come explore with us in January! We’ll be looking at more translations based on the earliest manuscripts found, the influence of monasteries, and the differences in Judaism and Christian interpretations. Come as you are able! For more information contact Kristie Anderson ([email protected] or 651/439-9133).

December 18 Advent Worship Event

Special Sock Offering

The children of Trinity collected a special sock offering for Valley Outreach Closet where the socks will be distributed to those who need them in the St. Croix Valley.

Worship with children’s choir, Christmas story performed by children’s ministry, welcoming of and message by Pastor Chris, sock offering (see below), and homemade Christmas cookies afterward (and so much more). It was double digits below zero outside, but inside it was a heartwarming morning of Advent worship and fellowship!
