SOUTH AUSTRALIA - Official Stamps - Departmental Overprints[This is our sixth major offering of Departmentals in recent years, including the collections formed by Les Munn (our auction of 15/5/2004), "Sir Humphrey" (8/10/2005), Harry Lower (12/5/2007) and Victor Bullock (1/9/2007). This collection was formed by the late Frederick Hall AM from Sydney and includes a number of items from the aforementioned collections plus from Colonel Napier's collection. Bidders should be mindful that defective sheets were often used for overprinting, resulting in many Departmentals being poorly centred, often exhibiting irregular or trimmed perforations, separation faults etc. Fine examples are thus the exceptional rather than the rule: those graded 'B' or even 'C' are generally at least average quality for the particular type. Until Stanley Gibbons properly lists and assigns values to these stamps they will remain grossly undervalued. Our estimates are conservatively based on our previous results, to which mention is made wherever appropriate. Please note that stamps Perf 11½-12½ are noted as "Perf 11½" for brevity]

Ex Lot 481

O The "rats & mice" of the collection. A selection of mostly defective but generally presentable stamps from 22 users with values to 2/- (2) and including Red (10) & Blue (3) Overprints. The best item is Red 'C.S.' on 1/- with GPO cds of AP1/68 being First Day of the Departmentals. (39)

Ex Lot 482

O The very colourful balance of the collection with 76 stamps from 29 users and values to 2/- (3) including 'P.S.' '3-PENCE' in Black on 4d blue (Ex Colonel Napier, with RPSofL Certificate). The lot comprises Red (19), Blue (3) & Black (54) Overprints. Grossly misplaced perfs, early dates and some fine stamps noted. The condition is rather mixed but most are attractive and quite presentable. By any measure this is an appealing opportunity, especially at such an enticing estimate. [See our website for scans of the entire lot] (72)
