For us, sign is the objective evidence of a disease condition. The prayer sign which you have just learnt, for example, signifies diabetic cheiroarthropathy.

In English, sign is the indication of the existence of something. Thunder is the sign of storm. A beating heart is the sign of life. John the apostle recorded 8 signs of God and heaven in his gospel. When Jesus turned water to wine and dead to alive, he let his glory to be seen. His deeds were the signs of his own glory. When Jesus walked on the sea as on the level ground, when 5,000 were fed with five fish and two loaves, the heavenly reality became the earth reality, and the existence of God was evidenced.

Now, Jimmy, Joanna and I would like to share with you a new meaning of sign: the publication of M13 Fellowship. The Sign is the sign of Christians in our class! We will publish regularly from now on throughout our medical school life to introduce ourselves, our belief and God to you.

In our first issue, as you have probably guessed from our cover story, we focus on prayers. For most Christians, praying is what they do at the beginning and the end of every day. We pray in our happiest or saddest times. As James put it, anyone in trouble should pray! Our featured article “iPray” illustrates the Lord’s prayer, which many know but less understand.

Our other articles include an imaginary interview “Touch and Scrub” presenting to you Jesus as the Great Physician; feeding 5,000 newly told and the recipe of a biblical delicacy.

It is always a little harder at the beginning. We spent weeks preparing for this but still it does not look perfect. So please - if you have anything for us, complaints or suggestions, tell us! You can find our contacts at the back of this book. Submissions, as always, are most welcome. We are especially looking for sharing or reflections from you, patients and doctors, Christian or not.

As in medicine, there are often some signs that we prefer: some are more obvious, some present early, some being highly specific. In the future, with your support and heavenly grace, we hope to become a good sign of our presence and faith.

Yours in Christ,LO Hui Yin

eiPray禱告時說甚麼?“Teach us how to pray,”- the disciples said to Jesus. (Luke 11:1) The Lord’s Prayer is a model of Christian prayer; every Christian learns it by heart. Are you curious about what Christians pray? Let’s go through this standard prayer together

我們在天上的父:願人都尊你的名為聖。Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.願你的國降臨;願你的旨意行在地上,如同行在天上。Thy Kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.我們日用的飲食,今日賜給我們。Give us this day our daily bread.免我們的債,如同我們免了人的債。Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.不叫我們遇見試探;救我們脫離兇惡And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

We describe our relationship with God. We approach God like a child talks to his caring father.

It means we hope God to set the world right by peace and justice; to do what’s best – as above in the heaven, so below on the Earth.

We ask God to provide us with all we need for every day. Trespass means

to do a bad thing. We are asking him to forgive our sins and we also promise to forgive people that have hurt us.

Life is a daily battle. Our soul can be easily destroyed by false values. We ask God to keep us from failing when we are tested, to help us to know the right thing to do.

Final tips:

The Lord’s Prayer is only a guide for praying so it shouldn’t be repeated mechanically. This is God of mercy you are dealing with, and He knows better than you what you need. With a God like this loving you, you can pray very simply.

Jesus M.D.

Most of us have heard about Jesus’ healing work. From medicine

to surgery, paediatrics to O&G, The Great Physician have healed so many without a blink. Seldom do people know, however, he is also a pioneer in missionary medicine. Without a white coat or a stethoscope, Jesus heals with a style.

Today, we are happy to have him sitting with us in the medical library. Let’s hear what he has to say about being a great doctor!

1. Why do you become a doctor?

Since young, I have compassion on sick people. I want to heal their sick and make them happy again!

(Matthew 14:14)

2. Please tell us about one of your most memorable cases.

Once when I was giving a lecture in Capernaum, so many people came that even the staircase of the theatre was filled by people. suddenly four young men rushed in. knowing that they could not pass through the crowd, they went out and broke the roof! Then they lowered the mat their friend was lying on. they wanted me to heal their paralysed friend!

I was so impressed by their faith so I asked the paralysed man to get up. He got up, took his mat and

walked out like a normal person!

3. How could we become good doctors?

To be a good doctor, you need to scrub frequently and touch your patients. , and be a good leader.

I hope you all know how to scrub properly.I believe you have all gone through your junior surgical clerkship, right? So you know that when medical students who did not scrub touch the instrument table (it does happen!), we have to get another sterilised set. So keep your hands clean! But that is not enough.Just

like what I had told a Pharisee before, it is not enough to clean only the outside of the cup; you also have to clean the inside. When

you want to reach your patients spiritually, you have to scrub your heart! It is not only to protect your patients, but also yourself. So purify your soul! If you don’t know how, you are always welcome to find me. After all, they call me the Great one for a reason!

We shouldn’t under-estimate the power of touch. Touching is so important in medicine because it says we care. Touching is not only about your excellent physical examination skills demonstrated in CCT. There is always a component of compassionate touch which heals deeply wounded hearts.Do remember that your patients consult you for your touch; if they don’t get it,

they won’t be satisfied!

4. I know you are a very busy doctor. How do you schedule your day?

Oh I do what most doctors do. You know, round with my partners, see patients at the OPD, carrying out procedures etc. I do home visits for some very special cases. Perhaps the only difference is that I am always on-call (the price to pay to be the son of God). I do take day offs sometimes and go to my favourite mountain to pray, though.

When I am not healing, I lectures. I often travel to give

talks. On the way I heal people who walk by as well.

5. Finally, do you have any words for us?

You are called to be doctors. May blessings be with you throughout your medical career. If you need anything, feel free to contact me!
