WHATS ON

The biggest social media project Ely has ever seen and likely to see is still growing stronger day by day and now we have taken the decision to become completely environmentally friendly.

Just take a look at the Facebook stats from the last 7 day opposite.

As you can see this week alone we have nearly 100 new followers and we have reached in excess of 80,000 people with nearly 15,000 engaging with what we do.

But the vast numbers do not stop there!!

We have a website too. We regularly have 2000 visitors per day and now try to post about 6-8 stories a day.

The events section is ever growing, we have so far listed over 3,000 events and publicise them through our Facebook Group which itself has a further 3000 members.

And now our vacancy section, well that grew in days to 2000 followers, all ‘looking for’ or ‘listing’ work.

The numbers astound us every day. Stories we write get numbers we just cannot believe sometimes but we don’t make them up out of thin air. These are all recorded by Facebook and our WordPress partners. We could say we get 10,000 copies printed but do you know how many read it? At Spotted in Ely we only use channels that allow us to monitor real numbers.

YOU CAN USE THESE TO YOUR ADVANTAGE.Businesses need to promote and we have just the tool for you to do it and we’ve dropped the prices right down to make them affordable.

Running Spotted in Ely is a full time job for 1 and part time for another and till now we have done this voluntarily and have loved doing it but that doesn’t help with the bills. The site itself costs us hundreds of pounds a month to run just in the software and hardware we use and the travelling around.

So here’s a deal for your business I think you are going to want to get involved with. We have 3 levels of sponsorship, you decide which is best for you:

Sponsorship Deal 1: £35 for one week. You get a logo on nearly every page of the website which can be clicked through to any website or social media site of your

choice plus you get one story onto the Spotted in Ely Facebook timeline during that week and when available, a free quarter page advert into our new upcoming weekly E-Magazine. We do not carry over missed story timelines so be sure to use within the week you pay for.

Sponsorship Deal 2: £25 per week (minimum 4 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-magazine but with a minimum period of 4 weeks.

Sponsorship Deal 3: £20 per week (minimum 12 weeks). All of the same as deal 1 except half page adverts in the E-Magazine but with a minimum period of 12 weeks. £25 per week if you want full page.

Your site sponsor logo dimensions are fixed at 175px wide by 100 px tall. Magazine sizes will be sent to you on production.

We do not include any graphic work done in the deals above although we can do this for you for an additional fee.

We have done E-Magazines in the past and found it has been viewed in excess of 16,000 times. We want to increase that to 20,000.

So there is the new easy deal system we are running on Spotted in Ely. For more information email [email protected] today.

Barstool Angel’s take Quiz Crown at the Drayman’sNot only does it turn out that the Barstool Angel’s are incredible musicians but they are quizzing legends as they stormed into first place at the Drayman’s Son Charity Quiz Night to celebrate Robbie Burns.

Dubbed “The Burn’s Night Quiz”, the pub on Forehill decided to host the event the Guide Dogs Charity for which Jo and Andy Pearson have been collecting for since they bought the pub back in July last year.

Quizmaster Andy Pearson is becoming know for his very unusual style of asking questions which he also writes. Often he will tell you a fact and then completely switch the question in another direction to throw you off the scent. Tom, Clare, Deborah and Gerry from the Barstool Angels proved their general knowledge was superior on the night.

8 teams competed in total and along with the raffle more than £150 was raised taking the Drayman’s Son total for the charity to just over £1000 in 7 months.

Winners: Bar Stool Angels with 43 out of 60.2nd Place: 3 Teds & the Mrs, 39½ points.3rd Place: Second Date with 38¼.

The wooden spoon went the Harlequins with 32½.

Bad Parking? After this weeks Police activity, you have been warned

A round up of this weeks activity on parking and traffic reassurance work at our local schools.

Our PCSOs have visited Millfield Primary (Littleport) St. Mary’s, St. John’s, Weatheralls (Soham), and Isleham Primary.

The officers have responded to concerns with a mixture of guidance, words of advice and the issuing of 18 fixed penalty notices (of £30).

Where appropriate Traffic Offence Reports have been submitted and two drivers have been reported for more serious offences which might incurr a £100 fine and/or 3 penalty points on their license.

The two more serious offences included parking on chevrons in breach of a prohibition, and an allegation of driving without due care.

Overall we have been incredibly grateful for the positivity that has been shown towards us by members of the public, by parents and by teachers.

As we have revisited schools we have seen an improvement in the situation, and this has been confirmed by the messages of support that you’ve been sending us.

Sgt Ryan Carter has said:

“Officers have been instructed to operate with a degree of discretion around the issuing of penalty notices and we’re very keen to see that this work serves a longer term purpose of making the roads around our schools safer for our children.

We have another week of activity planned, and our PCSOs will continue the good work that they have started.

What’s more pleasing is the dialogue that this work has encouraged on social media and in the local press. It has made people more mindful of this issue. We are always really pleased to hear feedback from the community and the ideas that people offer us for long term reassurance measures”

PCSO Maria Robinson said on meeting with children

“It’s great to see the children and keep them safe. That’s the main thing. We’ve had great feedback from parents and teachers encouraging our activity, but we do want to keep a balance in what we’re doing and we want to be fair to everyone.”

When Tesco kindly offered Spotted in Ely the opportunity to sell the calendars to customers we never expected one of their staff to take the role so serious.

Meet Sarah James who is a very active member of Tesco Ely.

Sarah has become a hero in our minds. We are trying to raise as much money as possible for the Ely Community First Responders and when she saw the box of calendars, she took it upon herself to stand in the reception are sell them by asking passers by for donations.

Ian Westwood, deputy manager at Tesco Ely told us “Sarah is one of those that always goes out her way and couldn’t wait to start helping the cause”.

Within a couple of short hours she raised nearly £200.

The Travellers Rest has had its fair share of Landlords over the years but with its unique location of being central to the all the towns and villages surrounding it yet on a main busy road it isn’t ever going to be a real drinkers pub.

Steve Shipp took over the management of the pub on Monday 18th January and aims to utilise this beautiful pub to its full potential.

This includes Fish and Chip Tuesday, Steak Night Thursday, Live music, discos and comedy nights most Friday nights, Breakfast buffet all you can eat on a Saturday morning and Sunday carvery. The food offering is of a wide selection of good quality homemade meals but with a emphasis on its

grill menu.

The pub is open Tuesday-Sunday and is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner Tuesday-Saturday and lunch on Sundays.

In the coming week a pool table and dart board will be added in leisure areas of the pub to offer leisure activities but with a defined separation from the main restaurant space.

Friday 5th February will host an official opening event which will include a disco, a guest performance from an up and coming local solo artist and a FREE BUFFET, the event is also FREE to attend.

The pub is open for business now with larger cosmetic, interior and exterior improvements in the coming weeks.

King’s Ely celebrate Ox-bridge Success

FIVE King’s Ely students discovered that they have received offers from Oxford and Cambridge Universities this week.

From Oxford, Rosamond van Wingerden has been offered an unconditional place to read Classics and Oriental Studies at Oriel, and Thomas Bruce has received an offer from Keble to read Computer Science.

From Cambridge, Phoebe Ryan has secured an offer from Murray Edwards to read Theology, Philosophy and RS, and has also received an unconditional place from the New College of Humanities in London, where she has been offered the prestigious Grayling Scholarship.

James Mitchell has been awarded an organ scholarship and a conditional place to study music at Girton, and Hongye Guo, originally from China, has secured a place at Queens’ to study Natural Sciences.

Director of Higher Education, Gill Smith, said:

“I am delighted for our successful Oxbridge candidates who have done amazingly well and for our other Year 13 students who have received some excellent offers from other leading universities in the UK and internationally.”

Vice-Principal Academic, Jane Thomas, added: “These offers are testament to the hard work of the students and the dedication and passion of the teachers here at King’s.”

Ely Table Tennis Club had another strong attendance at their third member’s Winter Tournament last Saturday at Prickwillow Village Hall. Once again, players from the five league teams were supported by those members and guests who regularly supported the Club.

The initial Handicap Singles Competition in the morning helped to even out the range of abilities within the Club and their guests. The keenly-structured handicap system also proved to be an incentive for the lesser experienced players to cause some upsets against the more experienced league players.

Neil Abram was a worthy winner again of this Handicap Singles event against one of the invited guests, Michael Klein, in a very closely-contested final game, 31 points to 29.

A Doubles event followed after lunch and again proved to be well balanced by teaming up mixed abilities. Rob Pownall won this event, partnered by Howard Middleton, against Simon Braschi and Michael Klein. Whilst the match was decided over 3 games, the individual games were really hard fought.

The John Dyal Commemorative Handicap Singles trophy was therefore awarded to Neil Abram. The other new trophy, the Andrew Maguire Player of the Tournament, deservedly went to Simon Braschi.Club Chairman, Howard Middleton, commented “This again was a super event, much appreciated by all the competitors. Special praise must go to Rob Pownall for organising the handicaps and schedules and Karen Byford for providing the excellent food.”

How old would you be if you didn’t know?

A thought provoking black and white exhibition has started at BabylonARTS with the artists Helena g Anderson opening the 10 day event.

Friday, Helena has taken over 100 photos of various people aged between 0 and 100 but they all have one thing in common. Each other them has a zero at the end of their age.

“Time and Time Again” displays all the photographs in order from 0 to 100 and somewhere in the middle is a secret celebrity. Can you identify them?

Helena in 2010 started to think about the perplex notion of time on the human body and wanted to find a way to display this. The idea has come about after losing families and stems deeply in her heart.

Several other works of Helena are on display and she will be available to meet on the weekend of 30th and 31st at the Babylon Gallery.

Exhibition continues until 31st January, open Tues – Sun 12-4pm. Entry is FREE.
