Transcript of Tri-City Real Estate
The cultivation of rhubarbdates back to about 2700BC in China, where it was
grown for its medicinal purga-tive qualities.
Native to the Bosphorus,a windy strait that separatesEurope and Asia, rhubarb has a long andinteresting history of treating many alimentsand was held in high regard through severalChinese dynasties.
For many centuries, Chinese emperors for-bade its introduction into Russia and Europe. It’s quite funny that rhubarb wasn’t popularin Britain until sugar became affordable in the17th century. After that, rhubarb was so popu-lar in the British Isles that it was comparableto the popularity of apple pie in the U.S.
In our part of the world, rhubarb hasjumped from an old-fashioned garden nov-elty to the forefront of the culinary world. Itcombines so well with berries, stone fruitsand apples in pies and adds a delicious tang tosauces, preserves, muffins, chutneys and evencold soups.
A cool-loving perennial vegetable, growingeasily from rather large fleshy rhizomes, rhu-barb (Rheum x hybridium) is hardy to zone 2but in warmer zone 10 climates, it is treatedlike an annual. Rhubarb stalks can be har-vested over an eight- to 10-week period eachspring and then the plant should be allowed torecover and re-grow over the summer and fallmonths.
Rhubarb leaves are poisonous, so do not usethem.
This is one of the most ideal times of theyear to plant rhubarb but look for the largestroots you can find with two or more eyes. They
are available now as bare root clumps as wellas freshly potted roots. It’s important to getthem planted as soon as possible because theyneed two years of growing time to become es-tablished enough to begin harvesting.
Rhubarb plants love a rich, well-drainedsoil. If you have established clumps, they areprobably already showing growth in spite ofthe cold weather and mulching existing stalkswith well rotted manures gets them off to agreat start. You can speed up your harvestingtime by covering them with a deep clay potflipped upside down. This technique is big inEurope and so easy to do.
For the first few seasons, harvest only forfour to five weeks to make sure the youngplants are not too stressed. When you harvestrhubarb, make sure you pull out the stalk bygrabbing the base of the stalk and tuggingsideways and outward. If the stalk does notcome cleanly out of the root, be sure to pulloff the stumpy end left attached to the root inorder to prevent decay. The importance of re-moving the whole stalk is why rhubarb shouldnever be harvested with a knife.
To keep rhubarb healthy and growing, never remove all its leaves and stop harvest-ing when smaller stalks appear in late spring/ early summer. When flowers appear in latespring, cut them out and feed the clump wellto get it back into a vegetative state.
In our region, not all varieties are availablebut ‘Victoria’ with its greenish red stalks,‘Crimson Cherry’ with its rich red stalks and‘Strawberry’ with its smaller red stalks dogreat in our area.
Rhubarb will perform okay in containersbut for long term enjoyment, it does far betterwhen planted in the ground. Rhubarb takes solittle space and can add so much flavour to somany dishes, it’s well worth the time to pop ina few plants.

A winner has been crowned in Morgan Crossing's B.C.'s Best Young Designer competition.
Judges chose Vancouver's Daniel Meloche from a group of six fi nalists who competed for the title and grand prize by designing a suite at South Surrey's Morgan Crossing village.
Meloche, a graduate from the Art Institute of Van-couver, is currently an interior designer and project co-ordinator for Northland Properties.
"I am overwhelmed and thankful for the honour of being named B.C.'s Best Young Designer," Meloche says.
"Th e competition was not only a great test of skill, but also a test of strategy in orchestrating my design vision on budget and on time."
Kari Henshaw, one of the contest judges and a principal at Insight Design Group, notes the judges were looking for the designer that captured their target market while remaining true to his or her indi-vidual design aesthetic.
"It's a tough balance to achieve, and Daniel ac-complished it with thoughtfulness, cleverness and a well-executed design," she says.
In his suite, Meloche favoured a clean, contem-porary design style with striking pops of colour and strong lighting elements. As his prize, Meloche will choose either an all-expenses-paid trip to New York to attend the renowned Architectural Digest Home Design Show or the cash equivalent.
Meloche says the eff ort was worth it."Th ere was nothing more rewarding than the fi nal
result, and the reaction of people who came through my suite."
Th e public chose a diff erent winner: Burnaby's Jo-anna Kado won the Fan Favourite category with her
suite, which featured warm colours, urban infl uences and layers of textures. Kado will receive a $2,000 prize.
Th e public can still view the furnished design suites every Saturday and Sunday until March 20; Meloche will be on-site each weekend from noon to 3 p.m. to off er general design advice to people who tour the suites.
All of the fi nalists' suites are now available for sale and, until March 20, new purchasers of Morgan Crossing homes are eligible for a complimentary two-hour design consultation with Meloche or Kado.
Visit www.morgancrossing.ca for more informa-tion.

Buying your first home can be a daunting fiprocess.
There are several diverse factors to take intoThconsideration when making such a significant fipurchase, especially in Metro Vancouver, where the housing market is like no other.
Local first-time homebuyers likely have fiseveral questions before purchasing their firstfidwelling, including queries about location, what style of home best matches needs andfinancial resources, what mortgage options arefiavailable, legal and tax considerations, how the homebuying tax credit works and what'sinvolved with condo pre-sales.
These questions and others will be answeredThby a panel of experts at the Greater Vancouver Home Builders' Association's 17th annual First-Time Home Buyers Seminar March 22.
"Our experts will help first-time buyersfiinvestigate all available options and key issuesbefore they take that critical first step onto the fiproperty ladder," says GVHBA president and CEO Peter Simpson.
Canada Mortgage and Housing Corpora-tion senior market analyst Robyn Adamache is among the many notable speakers who will be at the event, all of whom will address commonconcerns faced by fi rst-time homebuyers, from fifinances to home warranties.fi
"Real estate continues to be a hot topic in
this region, so the attendance is expected to be as many or greater than the 750 young people who attended the seminar last year," Simpson says. "Doors open at 6 p.m., allowing attendeesample time to view builder displays and other home-related products and services."
The presenting sponsor of the seminar is the ThHomeowner Protection Offi ce Branch of BCffiHousing; several other corporate sponsors are also supporting the event.
Th e event happens at the Sheraton Vancou-Thver Guildford Hotel from 7-9 p.m.; the hotel
has waived parking fees for the event. All participants are asked to bring a food item forthe Surrey Food Bank.
