Our Ancient Fraternity has high standards, chivalrous standards. We want men that are passionate about life but they must keep those passions balanced by reason and logic, striving to be better thus lifting the fraternities collective through their personal growth. And of course as no man is perfect, it is inevitable that he shall fail on more than one occasion. This why our most important tenant is brotherly love and affection, that other brothers more objective but, not less passionate, may guide and give wise counsel (with empathy - not sympathy). This is why we are not a secret society but a society that keeps secrets.

We are a voluntary organization. We would not exist if not for the Work that Individual men give to us. Let us be reminded of what the root to Work means, “worth”. Yes my brothers worth, and by the work we do, so to the value we add to Masonry and our own lives. Always remember that this organization is not to take from you but only to add to you. As the word sacrifice means “to make sacred”, always remember that our families and vocations should not suffer for what we are trying to make scared.

In the year of 2012, brotherly love and affection will be our guide in all that we strive for. Please remember that ideas read and spoken are just that, print on paper and sound in the wind. Actions and deeds dictate the power of what we say and print.

I am blessed and very proud that the brothers of Nellis Lodge #46, have chosen me to be their Master for 2012. I will with heart and soul be a proper and good custodian of the high office that has been place in me.

God Bless,

Worshipful Scott

I would like to congratulate W. Scott Kieser on his installation as Master of Nellis Lodge 46. We are all looking forward to the ensuing Masonic Year under his guidance. Also, congratulations to all the Officers Elected and Appointed on assuming your new duties, I’m looking forward to working with all of you to return Nellis 46 to its former Ritualistic Standard of being the best in the State and In the Forefront Spreading Light…..

It may be cold outside right now, but I’m thinking about Hot Temperatures and our annual Fourth of July Fireworks Booth. The Fireworks booth has been our major fundraiser since W. Craig Johnson Pm. started it all when he was Senior Warden back in 1993. I could use as much help as possible for this year’s endeavor so please mark your calendars and set aside sometime to join for some great fellowship during the week leading up to the 4th of July.

I would like to start a new fundraising project to help boost the funds in the Scholarship Account, we have done a lot of different things in the past; cooked breakfasts and dinners, sold programs at the Elks Rodeo, had rummage sales and passed the hat, I’m looking for a “New Idea” that could become another yearly tradition, please call or tell me your suggestions, and remember one key work, its gotta be “Fun”!

Fraternally yours,

W. Jeff Byrne P.M.

Brethren,

I would first like to thank you for your confidence in me by electing me as your Junior Warden. It will be a privilege and honor to provide you with your refreshments throughout the next year. I would like to encourage any requests or suggestions that you may have.

As I endeavor to complete the Nevada Masonic Orientation Course, I would encourage all my brothers to embark on this learning experience with me. Please let me know if you are interested and I will be happy to give you the information you need.

I hope your Christmas was full of Joy and may the New Year bring you good health and good fortune.

As I look forward to making 2012 a prosperous and enjoyable year for the lodge and all my brothers.

Fraternally

Bronze Craft He was the son of a widow of the tribe of Naphtali, and his father was a man of Tyre, a worker in bronze. And he was full of wisdom, understanding, and skill for making any work in bronze. He came to King Solomon and did all his work. 1 Kings 7:14

The Entered Apprentice is given the 24 inch gauge and common gavel, working tools appropriate to his level of proficiency, that of measuring and breaking-off the corners of rough stones. Our Ancient Operative Grand Master worked in bronze, as well as directing the building of King Solomon’s Temple, his expertise surpassing that of the E.A. by as much as the copestone of the building rises above its foundation. It is a worthwhile to inquire into the knowledge possessed by H.A. so that we may set our sights on the highest achievements that may be achieved as a Mason.

Bronze casting is simply the melting of the metal and pouring of it into a mold. The mold is broken, the cast object removed, and its surface buffed to finish. The technology is thousands of years old. It is practiced by societies of limited technology. The Ashanti tribe of West Africa is famous for its tiny bronze figures of men, animals, and ritual objects cast in bronze. The casting of the furnishings of the temple, as described in the Book of Kings and Chronicles, would be many degrees of craftsman-like proficiency beyond the fashioning of charms.

All bronze casting starts with a prototype made of clay, roughly like the intended object in appearance. This rough form is then covered with wax. The wax, which accepts subtle impressions, is then modeled in detail by the master sculptor. If the final object will be large, the wax-covered form is cut up into sections, which will be cast separately and re-joined later. The waxen form is finally covered with a fine clay slurry, allowed to dry, the same repeated several times.

When the applying of the clay coating is complete, the whole is heated in a furnace at a moderate temperature, about 300° F, just sufficient to gently melt and extract the wax. There remains a hollow mold, between the outer slurry shell and clay under mass,

Page 9: Trestleboard

9

formerly filled with wax. This mold is then fired in a ceramic kiln at a temperature of 2,000° F. causing the outer shell and inner mass to harden. Apertures for admitting the molten bronze will have been provided.

Bronze melts at a temperature of 1,552° to 1,832° F. It is generally melted in a blast furnace. Primitively, a bellows would be used to kindle a high energy fuel like charcoal to the necessary temperature, all while the crucible is visible and accessible to being tended. Handling a crucible of possibly hundreds of pounds of molten bronze is a task requiring the utmost skill and attention. In King Solomon’s time a crane must have been improvised from timbers for transferring the pot from the furnace, to the mold, and then tipping it to decant the molten bronze into the mold.

After the casting has cooled, the mold is broken, and the cast object removed. Any ceramic material stuck to the casting would be chipped off. The sprues remaining from the pouring spouts would be sawed and filed flush. In fact, the entire mass of the casting would be worked over in minute detail, separate parts soldered together, and the overall surface polished and perhaps painted. The finished object would then be ready to be placed among the furnishings of the temple. (Bro. Brian Higgins)

Dear Brothers,

Help us develop the leadership of tomorrow. Nellis need your support in furthering the education of new Brothers. As members of the Education/ Investigative Committee you will guide the future of the Lodge.

2012 is here and we are in need of volunteers to “make good men better.” This is very satisfying work that will help the Lodge to remain strong and keep Masonry in Southern Nevada the shining light of charitable work, moral uprightness, and the development of fraternal friendship.

Responsibilities on the committee will include investigation of candidates, coaching, teaching the meaning of the various symbols and rituals, and developing future leaders of Nellis Lodge.

The Lodge needs your support in developing candidates that promise to act in a manner benefiting society, obeying the laws of their Supreme Being, Country, and State. It asks you to work with candidates and create an environment so that they will attend Lodge, commit to good works, and prepare themselves for a future role in running the Lodge.

Isn’t Nellis worth an hour of your time? We are asking for volunteers who can commit to one hour per week to work for the future of our Lodge and our Fraternity. Can’t you find it in your heart to dedicate yourself to this worthy goal? If so, please contact Jerry McCorkle at your earliest convenience. The Lodge needs your support.
