Greetings from the East...
Namaste (salutations to you) my Brothers and Ladies. I hope you are enjoying the longer days and
warmer weather. It was a busy month for many of us, which makes me look back and wonder what
happened the month of May….it came and left in no time at all. I have several things I want to dis-
cuss this month and the first one is…Payment of Dues.
When you become a Freemason part of your obligation and responsibility is to pay your dues eve-
ry year or buy a Life Membership. Many of our brothers have still not paid their dues for 2013, which
were due by Dec 31, 2012. Entered Apprentices and Fellowcrafts have a prorated amount since it
was just voted in at our last Annual Communication. I am asking all brothers that have still not paid
their dues to please do so, or if you are experiencing a legitimate hardship call me at 619-335-0714
or contact our Secretary or Senior Warden so we at least know of your circumstance and can discuss
remitting your dues at our next Membership Retention Committee meeting. We do not want to lose
any members by non-payment of dues so I am asking those members that have still not paid to do
so. Being a Mason has meaning, so don’t let a small fee and a postage stamp get in the way.
The next topic refers to Per Capita – the portion of every member’s dues that is sent to Grand
Lodge for them to operate. Right now Per Capita is $31. Last year Grand Lodge lowered the Per Capi-
ta $4. I suspected at the time that it sounded too good to be true, so at the Masters and Wardens
Retreat they informed us that Per Capita will be increasing $4 at our Annual Communication this
year……that is IF the majority of those in attendance approve the budget for the upcoming year.
Apparently their actuaries failed on this concept.
I also assigned a Dues Review Committee to assess where we stand according to the current
amount of our dues, per capita, inflation, expenses and income. I am not saying our dues will go
down or up, I am going to let the committee do their job and present their findings before any action
is taken. I can say that Unity Lodge has been in existence five years and we all know that things
cost more now than they did five years ago, and our dues have remained the same….and are still
among the lowest in the San Diego area.
I want to congratulate Brother Graciano Amazola, who was initiated on May 15th and became our
youngest Entered Apprentice Mason. We have several degrees coming up in the upcoming months so
please come out and support our lodge and be a sideliner.
On May 18th we had our annual Mother’s Day Brunch which was a great success. I want to thank
everyone for coming out and supporting the event. It was great to see so many mothers in attend-
ance and I hope to see just as many, if not even more at next year’s. A special thank you goes out to
my Junior Warden, Brother Steve Bumgarner for his hard work in planning it, and also to all of my
Officers that helped with this event.

They say April showers bring May flowers and that cer-
tainly was true for Mother’s Day Brunch on May 18. Unity Lodge celebrated our Mothers a week after Mother’s Day but
it was a success none the less. With over 60 people in at-tendance we enjoyed good food from Juli and Eddie, enter-
tainment from Victoria Rose and more than half of them
were moms. My apologies to all the mom’s that did NOT re-ceive flowers. I thought for sure 30 bouquets would cover it.
Congratulations are also in order for Robert Stacey who re-ceived his Golden Veteran Award for 50 years of Masonry on
May 8 and Graciano Amezola who received his 1st Degree of Masonry on May 15. Looking forward, June is going to be
another busy month with the Unity Lodge Child ID booth at
Wings over Gillespie on June 1-2 weekend, Art Around Ad-ams at the building and parking lot on June 1, 1st Degree
for Ryan Garner on June 10 (7pm), June’s Stated Meeting (7:30pm) and dinner (6:30pm) on June 12, Hiram Award
presentation and award on June 15 for Bob Creager
(6:30pm) and finally the Royal Lederle Picnic on June 22 (11-3pm) at Admiral Baker Field, pavilion #15 near the pool.
Whew looks to be a busy month and I hope to see you at ALL the events.
Fraternally, Steven Bumgarner - Junior Warden

Implementation of Resolutions 11-06 and 11-07
Following is a portion of that letter:
Resoution 11-07: Requires Entered Apprentice and Fellow Craft Masons to pay dues to the Lodge. It is my decision that this requirement shall be effective October 1, 2012. The Lodge should include in the billing for the 2013 dues all Entered Apprentice and Fel-low Craft Masons on the rolls. In addition to the 2013 dues amount, the lodge should collect in that same billing a pro-rated portion of the dues for the three months ending December 31, 2012. While the Entered Apprentice or Fellow Craft Mason would not be in good standing until he pays the pro-rated 2012 dues and then his 2013 dues, he only needs good standing status to request a demit and move to another lodge. He does not need to be in good standing to advance or attend the Stated Meeting.

Lastly, I want to correct two mistakes I made in last month’s Trestleboard. First, the list of Honored Ladies on page 7 should have included Marciel Hart Wood whose husband was Golden Veteran William Mariam Wood. The second mistake was my misspelling of Loma De Santis’ name. I also realize I should have proofread my article Angels Among Us better as I found several mistakes after it was printed…do you ever get in a fog where you are doing your best to concentrate on something but the brain just doesn’t engage….well that’s my excuse for the errors in that article. There is an unflattering definition of teachers, "Those who can't do ... Teach." I feel like I ought to fall in this category myself. I am currently studying the
ancient Greeks and I've picked up a text on Pythagoras that is absolutely fascinating. A little background is needed for these thoughts to make sense. Pythago-
ras is a philosopher, who left little in the way of writings about his philosophies behind. Much of what we know is found in other's writings. Plato is considered
to be highly influenced by his ideas and to have expanded on those ideas.
One of the nuggets I picked up from this study is eerily similar to the portion of the 3:5:7 lecture which talks about going from a point to a line, a line to a
superfice, and from a superfice to a solid. In Plato's "Law" use of these four elements is discussed as a way "for perception to be made possible for those who
perceive it."
In Plato's "On the Good," he talks about the fifth element being unteachable. The only course possible "is to take those who are on the right path and are
'related to' truth (344a) and lead them on, in patient practice, to the point where Being reveals itself to them in a sudden illumination. "Knowledge of each
thing, and Mind, blaze forth in his view as he strains to the limit of human capacity." (344c)
From my study of esoteric knowledge, I recognize many ideas in this fifth element. The idea of Samadhi, or living in the presence of God is found as an
idealized goal in the Eastern philosophies. In the Christian tradition, this is accomplished through prayer, other traditions use meditation, and others speak of
out of body or astral experiences.
One of the puzzles that I have gnawed on since I became a Mason is why Pythagoras is mentioned in all three degrees and why geometry is so important.
What do we do as Masons? We take good men and make them better. How are we told to do this? By a study of our individual book of the Sacred Law. In the
Scottish Rite, I constantly hear in their degrees the phrase, "This symbol will be explained to you when you are ready to hear." I have never known God in the
way described in the Plato's "On the Good." Is this what is needed to hear?
