Technology con’t.
• 40% of all donations under $100 are made online (CanadaHelps 2009)– Micro-Philanthropy – Mobile Giving
• 60-80% of Americans check out a charity online before making a donation (American Institute of Philanthropy and GiveWell.org)

• Trend of decreasing volunteer time– 1Million fewer people volunteered, the number of
hours per volunteer increased• 2009 – Concept of micro-volunteerism
becomes mainstream
Social Enterprise• Social entrepreneurs are changing civic and human
services, leadership, and institutions to encompass market-based approaches for appropriate scale, impact, and sustainability.
• For Profit– Businesses that are social mission driven
organizations which trade in goods or services for a social purpose.
– The profit from the business is used to support related social aims, or that the business itself accomplishes the social aim through its operation (Wikipedia).
Social Enterprise
• Non-Profit– the use of earned income ventures to support the
mission of a non-profit organization
Opportunities & Obstacles?• How do you engage the ME generation?• Is Mobile Giving for you?• How do you perceive for-profit social
enterprises affecting your revenue generation?
• What ways can non-profit organizations enter into joint ventures with for-profit social enterprises?
Keep in Mind• Not all charities can have social enterprise
revenue models– Salvation Army CAN have thrift stores– Juvenile Diabetes CANNOT have a thrift store (but
they can partner with for-profit companies… joint social venture)
• Micro-volunteerism is done via internet• Episodic volunteerism can be done either in
person or online• Charities exist because there is a donor AND
someone with an idea
