Treating hypoglycaemia

Always remember

If your blood glucose levels are less than 4.0mmol/l, treat with one of the following

Wait 10–15 minutes and re-check blood glucose

If blood glucose is less than 4mmol/l, repeat treatment above

If blood glucose is more than 4mmol/l, follow treatment below

Choose one of the following low-GI carbohydrate snacks. For example:

�� 1 piece of fruit

�� 1 slice of grain bread

�� 1 glass of milk

�� 1 muesli barORFollow up with your regular meal containing one of the carbohydrates below. For example:

�� Low-GI bread

�� Pasta, low-GI rice

�� Corn, legumes/lentils, sweet potato

�� Report any unexplained or frequent hypoglycaemia to your doctor.

�� Do not give food or fluids to an unconscious person.

�� Dial 000 for an ambulance and assistance
