THE BUYER Estimated PriceEstimated price is the price range, which reflects the opinion of our specialist for the price expected to offer at the auction. This should not be relied on as a statement that this price is either at which the lot will sell or its value for any other purpose. Estimated prices are based upon prices recently paid at auction, and the condition of the artworks including the quality, rarity and history of ownership (provenance).

Reserve PriceThe reserve is the confidential minimum price the seller is willing to accept and below which a lot not be sold.

Buyer’s PremiumBuyers are reminded that the price to be paid will be the sum of the final bid price plus the buyer’s premium. The rate of buyer’s premium for each lot is 22 % (twenty two percent) of the hammer price.

BEFORE THE AUCTIONViewing Pre-sale viewings are strongly recommended for prospective buyers in order to examine the artworks thoroughly. Pre-sale viewing is open for the public at no charge and usually displayed for 2 (two) days prior to the sale.

Condition ReportsCondition reports are available upon request. They are statements of opinion and should not be relied on as statements of definitive fact. Descriptions of property are not warranties and that lot is sold “as is”. All goods are sold with all faults and imperfections and errors of description. Illustrations in catalogues are for identification only. It is strongly recommended that prospective buyers inspect and seek any independent expert advice to satisfy you as to authorship, attribution, authenticity, genuineness, origin, date, age, provenance or condition of lot.

RegistrationIf you are planning to participate in the auction, you will need to register with us at the registration desk, to complete a bidder registration form and to receive a bidding number to identify you if you are a successful bidder. Registration can be made during the viewing period or 30 minutes prior to the sell.

THE AUCTIONBiddingAll artworks are auctioned in consecutive numerical order. Bidding is done in Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) in incremental price raise. The auctioneer will accept bids from those present in the saleroom or absentee bidders participating by telephone or by written bid left with TREASURES in advance. The lot being offered is usually illustrated on a screen.

Bidding IncrementsBidding generally opens below the low estimate and advances in the following increments:

Rp. 1.000.000 - Rp. 10.000.000 by Rp. 500.000Rp. 10.000.000 - Rp. 20.000.000 by Rp. 1.000.000Rp. 20.000.000 - Rp. 50.000.000 by Rp. 2.000.000Rp. 50.000.000 - Rp. 100.000.000 by Rp. 5.000.000Rp. 100.000.000 - Rp. 200.000.000 by Rp. 10.000.000Rp. 200.000.000 - Rp. 500.000.000 by Rp. 20.000.000Rp. 500.000.000 - Rp. 1.000.000.000 by Rp. 50.000.000Rp. 1.000.000.000 - above by the auctioneer’s direction.

Absentee/ Written BidsIf you cannot attend the auction in person, you may bid in other ways. The most common is written bids. Written bids are written instruction given to TREASURES to bid for you on one or more lots up to a maximum amount you specify for each lot. There is no charge for this service. If two or more parties leave identical bids, the first bid received by TREASURES will take preference. Written bid forms are available 7 days before the sale and returned to TREASURES within 24 hours before the sale or by fax to (021) 351 0707.

Telephone BidsIf you cannot attend the auction, TREASURES will execute on behalf of your bid by telephone. Please make arrangements for this service at least 1 (one) day before the sale. It is advisable for you to leave your maximum bid, in case you are unable to reach us by phone.

Successful BidsSuccessful bidder will be indicated by the fall of the auctioneer’s hammer after reaching or exceeding the reserve price. TREASURES will record the bidder number of the buyer. Under the auctioneer’s discretion bidding may be reopened.

Unsold lotsWhen a lot fails to sell, the auctioneer will not announce a bidder’s number. Lots unsold will be returned to the consignor usually after a week in case there are any post sale offers.

AFTER THE AUCTION Payment Payment of purchases should be made within 7 (seven) calendar days. Please include your paddle number, name, lot number, and total payment in your bank instruction. If buyers do not make any payment or notice to TREASURES during the scheduled time, they will be considered as withdrawing.

Collection of GoodsGoods can be collected only when payment has cleared and been received by TREASURES. Due to space constraints, TREASURES requires that purchases and unsold property be collected within 7 (seven) days. If the goods remain after 7 (seven) days TREASURES reserves the right to cause the artworks to be stored at the expense of the purchaser.

Storage and InsuranceTREASURES provides insurance cover for sold items for a maximum of 7 (seven) days after the date of the sale. If the goods have not been removed by the deadline, the goods will be deposited at warehouse and all storage transportation and other associated costs as well as risk shall be at the purchaser’s responsibility.

123S. SUDJOJONO(Kisaran, 1914 – 1986)Pejaten Pasar Minggu, 1975

Oil on canvas: 69 x 49 cmSigned, titled and dated, lower left: Bali’75, Pejaten Pasar Minggu, S. Sudjojono

RP 500.000.000 - 600.000.000

Sindudarsono Sudjojono was born in Kisaran North Sumatra, on December 14, 1913. He studied painting from Mas Pringadi and a Japanese painter, Chiyoyi Yazaki. In 1937 he founded the Persagi Indonesian Artists Association in Jakarta. In 1970 he was awarded recognition in art by the Indonesian government. His works have been exhibited in the Netherlands and in the Fukuoka Art Museum in Japan (1980). Local exhibitions have been held in Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Denpasar and Bandung. He died in Jakarta (1986). S. Sudjojono, a self-taught artist who trained briefly at a Taman Siswa school, is widely regarded as the driving force behind the establishment of modern art in Indonesia. S. Sudjojono paintings have a typical harsh and wild strokes as if the paint has been poured directly onto canvas. His observation of his surroundings seemed spontaneous, as though they were snapshots of views that appealed to him.

S. Sudjojono paintings often derived from his fantasy and memory he personally experienced. After getting divorced from their respective spouses, Rose and Sudjojono, married in 1959. They decided to live in Pasar Minggu area, which at that time was still considered the outskirts of Jakarta, and started to build their house, room by room. Pak Djon is a family man. He loved to sit together with his family talking about anything, music, art, homemaking, finance, education to politics. In the morning, he would sit at the front porch of his house and had some coffee. Then, he would directly draw sketches on the object that captured his interest. The present lot features a truck that often passed near his house. Historically, Pasar Minggu is a fruit cultivation area developed by the Dutch government during the colonial period. The central point of the cultivation area is the traditional market of Pasar Minggu, located in what is now called Pasar Minggu. There are many trucks passes by the Pejaten road to Pasar Minggu area. A truck is halted under the big tree with figure of traditional ice seller near the truck. The weather seems very hot that made the driver take a rest under the big tree while having a glass of cold ice from the seller. This perhaps also picturized the harsh condition of the people at the time, that became Sudjojono’s great attention in subject of his paintings about the daily life of common people.

S. Sudjojono
