01 SEE MORE OF ASIA Travelling through Asia is an enchanting experience, with unforgettable highlights like the temples of Angkor in Cambodia, the Three Gorges Dam in China, or the plains of Bagan in Burma, but for many travellers it is the experience of local life, and the wonderful people they meet along the way, that is the true highlight of their trip. Seeing it all can be hard, but river cruising is the ideal way to uncover these delights.

02 TRAVEL WITHOUT THE HASSLES

There is a thrill in packing your bags and heading for the airport, but there are also the hassles travel brings, like living out of a suitcase, not knowing how much things will cost, or long road journeys. Imagine checking into a luxurious cabin and unpacking just once, while all the sights and sounds come to you, with the conveniences of a boutique hotel at your fingertips. With Asia river cruising, you can do just that.

06 SERVICE ON-BOARDMany of the staff on board are internationally trained, offering the type of service you would expect in a five-star hotel. At each stop on your cruise, you will be accompanied by a local guide for an in-depth understanding of the places you visit. We use boutique ships, ensuring personal attention with high staff to passenger ratios.

07 HOW IS IT DIFFERENT TO AN OCEAN CRUISE?

River cruisers generally carry far fewer passengers than ocean cruisers. They cruise over smaller distances so travel is at a more leisurely pace, and stopping along the banks is common. More intimate ships give you the chance to meet other travellers, and access areas on-shore where a larger group would not be able to go. While the facilities on a river cruiser are of a very high standard, there may not be the quantity found on large ocean-cruisers, and the trip is more focused on the people and places you visit.

IS RIVER CRUISING FOR YOU? I want to unpack just once,

and let the destinations of Asia come to me.

I like to get off the beaten path and discover regions not accessible by roads or by large groups.

I want to know exactly how much my holiday costs before I leave home, with everything paid for in advance.

I enjoy seeing panoramic scenery that changes every day.

I’d like to spend time on my own private balcony.

I want to meet other travellers with similar interests.

I don’t want to miss out on any of the highlights, but still want to travel at a leisurely pace.

I prefer more intimate shore excursions for an authentic experience of Asia.

I’m looking for luxurious on-board facilities and impeccable service.

I’d like to experience more of Asia in a shorter period of time.

03 A FLOATING HOTELEnjoy the convenience of cruising without giving up your creature comforts. Enjoy impeccable service, spacious, air-conditioned cabins with private balconies on most cruises, and on-board facilities including restaurants and bars, sun decks, swimming pools and spas.

04 ON-BOARD ENTERTAINMENT

The entertainment offered on board compliments your itinerary and furthers your knowledge and understanding of local places and culture. From cooking classes to dancing demonstrations, lectures to movie nights, there is always something to keep you entertained.

05 ON SHORERiver cruise ships get to places larger ships couldn’t. It is common to stop at small villages and markets to experience local life. Many ships give you the chance to choose your shore excursions, so you can do as much or as little as you like.

OUR LOCAL GUIDES

Nghia Duong, Travel Indochina Expert Local Guide "My name is Nghia Duong, and I have been part of the Travel Indochina team for 12 years. In my time as a local guide I’ve learnt what a Travel Indochina traveller wants, and it goes well beyond the main tourist attractions. I live in Saigon and I know the streets of Saigon like the back of my hand, but as it evolves I keep learning more, from new restaurants to unique shopping experiences. Being a local, I can give you an insider’s point of view, and access the heart of Saigon in a way only a local can. Guiding small groups means that we can get off the beaten track to fi nd the real Saigon. I cannot think of a better way to make a living than spending every day talking to people about the place I love and seeing each one have a memorable and happy experience. See you in Saigon!"

Paula Harrigan, Travel Indochina Tour Leader "In the four years that I’ve been working for Travel Indochina, I’ve been lucky to lead tours across all our Asian destinations. Being a tour leader I meet people from all over the world and we share great travel experiences. Our travellers come back again and again, and I see them in different countries. Our travellers come from such a diverse range of backgrounds, cultures, professions and ages, and it’s lovely when they all come together and mix and mingle, and often make lifelong friendships. I think being a tour leader is like a duck swimming. On the surface everything is smooth and calm, but underneath we are paddling like crazy to make sure that our clients are having the best experience they can. The smoother it looks on the surface, the better I’m doing my job.”

ENJOYING THE SIGHTS ON-BOARD THE JAHAN

6 HANDMADE FROM LOCAL KNOWLEDGE. HANDPICKED BY US. travelindochina.com.au

THE ROAD NOT TAKEN The rivers of Asia breathe life into communities that line them and the towns and cities beyond, and for centuries have been arteries for trade, forever intertwined with the history and culture of each place they wind through. As these ancient routes have been replaced by roads, the rivers offer a taste of times gone by and experiences not found on more touristed paths. Disembark your cruise to explore the fascinating people and places that lie along the shore of the road less travelled.

MORE INTIMATE EXPERIENCESChoosing one of our boutique cruise ships means there will be less people on board. This means there will be no delays in disembarking and once on shore, you will have access to sites and areas that do not cater to larger groups. This more intimate style of touring means you get more interaction with your local English-speaking guide, as well as the people you meet along the way.

MUST-SEE ATTRACTIONSOur Asia river cruises and tours include some of the most iconic sites in Asia, from the breathtaking temples of Angkor to tranquil Tonle Sap Lake in Cambodia, and the World Heritage listed Halong Bay in Vietnam to her thriving and historic cities. In China see the incredible Three Gorges Dam on your Yangtze River

Cruise, or extend your tour to include the Great Wall of China or the Army of Terracotta Warriors. In Burma, visit the legendary city of Mandalay and marvel at the vast plains of Bagan dotted with thousands of temples and pagodas of a bygone era.

BECOME IMMERSED IN A NEW CULTURENot every shore excursion is to a major site. Many allow you to see the way the people live their daily lives along the rivers for an insight into the culture. Wander the local markets meeting residents as you go, or visit a riverside village. Your local English-speaking guide will help you get a better understanding of life in these areas.

TRAVEL AT YOUR OWN PACEWith smaller distances to travel and astounding sights on the shore along your route, river cruising allows you to travel at a more leisurely pace, while still filling your days with the sights and sounds of Asia. Each day you disembark, you may choose to join one of the small group shore excursions at absolutely no cost. However, you may also wish to relax on board. It’s your holiday so it’s your choice.

NO HIDDEN EXTRASWith on-board entertainment and all featured sightseeing included, there are no hidden extras, so you know exactly where you stand with your holiday budget.

CUISINE

DINING ON-BOARDAll meals on your river cruise are included.

While the emphasis is on local cuisine, giving you the chance to try the best regional specialties, a range of Western options are always available. Many of the chefs on-board have been internationally trained and take pride in presenting fine dining options that draw on both local cuisine and Western influences.

Meals are served in style at dedicated dining halls, but there are often private dining options available, such as breakfast on your balcony or a private dinner in the Observatory on the Jahan.

Breakfast is usually buffet style, offering you a choice of English, Continental and Asian-inspired cuisine. Lunch and dinner are served in an elegant style and are either a la carte, buffet style or set menu.

04 LESSER THREE GORGES

Board small river boats for an excursion along the Daning through the ‘lesser three gorges’, surrounded by the cliffs of Longman Xia, local rural scenes and the sound of chattering monkeys.

05 THREE GORGES DAM PROJECT

A project of monumental proportions this extraordinary engineering feat was completed in 2009. It involved the fl ooding of 20 towns and the relocation of about 1.3 million people, and provides a large portion of China’s energy.

06 YICHANG

Situated at the entrance to the Xiling Gorge, this once sleepy town has been transformed by the Three Gorges Dam Project into the economic and cultural centre of the Western Hubei Province.

01 CHONGQING

This mountain city clings to steep cliffs at the confluence or the Yangtze and Jialing Rivers.

02 FENGDU

Known as the “City of Ghosts” Fengdu is filled with temples and shrines to the gods of the underworld, modelled after the Chinese Hell in Taoist mythology, with some structures built nearly 2000 years ago.

03 THREE GORGES

Experience the magnifi cent and dramatic landscape of the Three Gorges as you sit back aboard your cruise ship. The shortest and most dramatic is the Qutang Gorge, with an entrance guarded by two mountains – Chijia Shan (Red Passage Mountain) and Baiyan Shan (White Salt Mountain). Wu Gorge, which means ‘Witches’ Gorge, is best known for twelve unique peaks, often hidden in swirls of mist. The longest and deepest is Xiling Gorge with towering cliffs rising to over 1,200 metres.

10 XIAN

Famed for the Army of Terracotta Warriors, China’s most important archaeological find of the last century, this walled city is a melting pot of peoples and cultures, especially in the vibrant Muslim Quarter.

11 GUILIN, YANGSHUO & LONGSHENG

In Guilin and Yangshuo, discover the limestone hills flanking the Li River. Further west are the mountain cliffs, evergreen forests and azure pools of Yunnan and Sichuan.

12 YUNNAN

Rich in natural beauty and cultural diversity, Yunnan is home to a third of China’s ethnic minorities with varied landscapes ranging from towering Tibetan peaks to rainforests teeming with wildlife. Kunming is a relaxed, cosmopolitan city. Beyond its borders lie charming towns such as Dali and Lijiang, quite unlike anywhere else in China.

07 HUANG SHAN (YELLOW MOUNTAIN)

This breathtaking World Heritage listed site is famous for its mist shrouded limestone peaks surrounded by quaint traditional villages and patchwork of farmlands, and has inspired artists and poets for centuries.

08 SHANGHAI

Known as the Pearl of the Orient, Shanghai has captivated the imaginations of travellers for over a century. Nowadays the city has two very different stories to tell, with the stately colonial architecture of the Bund riverfront on one side of the river, and the skyscrapers and futuristic design in Pudong, on the other.

09 BEIJING

Beijing is the bustling, thriving, ancient capital. Towers of glass and steel form this city’s modern fl avour, but it is the imperial past that beats the heart of Beijing. See the Great Wall at Mutianyu, far from the tourist traps.

Travel Insurance: Medical facilities across Asia are often unable to provide the full range of medical services that are available in developed countries, making evacuation a requirement in many non-life threatening medical situations. Regardless of the type of your holiday arrangements, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance at the time of booking.

Special needs – Travellers with a physical or mental disability that may require special assistance during their trip must advise us of their needs upon booking. This enables Travel Indochina to ensure the suitability of each booking to the individual traveller.

Bedding configuration – Requests for specific bedding types must be made at the time of booking, however cannot be guaranteed. Note that double rooms can be fitted with either double or twin beds, and note also that single rooms are often smaller than other rooms. Triple rooms usually comprise a twin bed room with an additional sofa bed, roll-away bed or a fold-away bed for a third person, and can sometimes be crowded.

Travelling with children – Where a child stays for free in a room sharing with two paying adults, generally the hotel will expect the child to share the parent’s bed and will not provide an extra bed. Additional charges may be levied for child meals. Where a child rate is provided in this brochure, an extra roll or fold-away bed is usually provided. Children are charged an adult rate if staying in a room without adults.

Consumer claims – We strive to ensure your arrangements are delivered smoothly, however there are times when problems arise on the ground. You should first try to resolve service problems with the provider of the service. If the problem cannot be resolved you should contact the emergency contacts provided in your detailed itinerary. If you fail to take these steps you may be affecting your recourse for a future claim. If a problem is not resolved during your journey you should send us written correspondence detailing the nature of your complaint as well as the efforts you went to resolve the problem while in Asia. Please send this correspondence to us, with supporting documentation, via your travel agent, within 30 days of the date of service delivery. We will not consider claims made after this period.

Passports and visas requirements – Visas, including transit visas, are the passenger’s own responsibility. Please check with the respective Embassy or Consulate of each country that you are travelling to. For more information regarding visa information and the latest destination travel advice please log on to: www.dfat.gov.au or www.smarttraveller.gov.au. You need to ensure that you have at least 6 months validity on your passport from the date of your departure.
