WHEN IT comes to creating big lifemoments, from seeing wildlife in itsnatural habitat to experiencing iconicsights, more than 60% of British adultsare prepared to invest more than theaverage holiday in making their 'wishlist' a reality, according to Kuoni.

The operator reports that it hasseen holidays with an adventure, cultural or touring element as part ofthe itinerary grow at twice the pace ofstay-put beach breaks over the pasttwo years.

Whilst the Maldives, Thailand andSri Lanka top the best-sellingdestination list for 2016, the rising stardestinations for the year ahead are ledby Japan, followed by Myanmar(previously known as Burma), Kenyaand Namibia, which have seen thebiggest rises in bookings year-on-year.

Another destination making animpact on the travel market is

Vietnam, which has rapidly risen upthe best-sellers list over the last twoyears. Unlisted in the companys top20 five years ago, advance bookings for2016 show Vietnam at 12th position -its highest ever point in the list ofbest-selling destinations.

Direct flights to Vietnam from theUK have had a huge impact ontourism over the past two years andthe country is adapting fast withinnovative new high quality resorts.

Cuba, also listed in the top 20 list ofbest-selling destinations at eighthposition, has become so popular thatdemand is now outstripping supply.

Tourism continues to thrive and themessage to 'see Cuba before itchanges' when it opens up to theAmerican market, has driven increasedbookings over the last 12 months, putting pressure on a finite number ofhotel rooms particularly in Havana.

Despite 2015 being defined byheadlines - from the Tunisia attacksto the economic meltdown in Greece- the operator's report revealsdemand for worldwide travel showsno signs of slowing.

Whilst confidence in travel for wishlist destinations and experiences isunabated, booking patterns for 2016do reflect a hesitancy to book somedestinations, with Egypt dropping outof the top 30, Morocco and Turkeydown and the ever-resilient Dubai andAbu Dhabi experiencing a slight dentin bookings year-on-year.

Yet with the pound riding highagainst most currencies at themoment, travellers from the UK areenjoying some of the best valueholidays to many long- and short-haulspots. African destinations inparticular are enjoying an upward turn

A TOTAL of 70 guests from the UK travel industry celebrated the ten-year anniversary of TCA Abu Dhabis UK office earlier this month at adrinks reception and dinner held at the Hyatt Regency London The Churchill. After dinner, guests were surprised by the arrival of twoStormtroopers to celebrate Abu Dhabis role in the new Star Wars film - The Force Awakens. Its a bit off-putting to hear about the American Airlinesplane that had to turn back because the crew andpassengers suddenly became ill. Apparently, sevenout of the 13 crew became ill and quite a few passengersstarted feeling unwell, so the captain decided it was saferto turn back to Heathrow and landed back five hoursafter leaving. A sensible decision I think, and better thanhaving a hole blown in the side of the plane - as is whathappened to a passenger plane over Somalia shortlyafter take-off - and it turned around to land back atMogadishus International Airport. Apparently one bodywas blown out of the plane but only a couple of peopleneeded treatment when they landed. I wonder what thestory will be with this one. Then we had Royal Caribbeans Anthem of the Seas

having to turn back to its home port of New York becauseof the horrendous weather; passengers were asked tostay in their cabins. At least they were given free in-roomfilms and mini bar - I think I would have needed a couplebottles of Prosecco! So sad to hear about John Harding dying far too

young and another victim of the dreaded cancer. He wasalways cheerful. Let that be it now...the travel industrydeserves a good, busy and happy 2016!I read an article by someone that was a carer/nurse

and she said the top five regrets of people dying were: 1) Not living life true to yourself but living it to whatothers expected. 2) Wishing they hadnt worked so hard(missed a lot). 3) Courage to express your true feelingsnot needing to keep the peace etc. 4) Stayed in touch withfriends. 5) Wish they had let themselves be happierinstead of sticking to old habits, comfort zone, fear ofchange etc.I think there are some good points there that we can

all still learn from, so make 2016 the year you do whatyou want to do, follow some dreams but most of all enjoylife!Just because you cant see the path you want to be on

does not mean it is not there and Dont stay in thesomeday mentality, someday Ill have more money, someday Ill have more time etc...

Matt Spiller, agent sales manager at InsideAsiaTours and Operator - a representative on theAITO Agents Panel - highlights the importance ofbeing on the road...

Two years ago, the directors at InsideAsiaTours encouraged me to start going on theroad to start meeting more agents(especially AITO Agents). Up until that point, wehad always been too small to justify havingsomeone dedicated to building agentrelationships full-time, but the company wasgrowing and we highlighted that working with thetrade was key to this growth. To say I wasreluctant at first was an understatement. Whyleave my comfortable 9 to 5 reservations job inorder to get up at the crack of dawn and drive tothe other side of the country? Why spend my lifehopping from Travelodge to Travelodge, whilstfuelled on only baked goods from motorwayservice stations? Dont get me wrong, I love a steak bake as much as the next person, but this certainly wasnt a glamorous side of thetravel industry.Despite this reluctance, I did what I was told

and started to get on the road. In doing so it hasbecome increasingly apparent to me that howevercomplex and hi-tech the world becomes, we cantget away from the fact that the most importantand worthwhile business is still done face-to-face. This may seem fairly obvious and will not beany sort of revelation to many that are readingthis, but it is very hard for smaller operators tosee past the time and financial restraints of doingthis and take the plunge to start calling on ouragent partners. Many operators, including InsideAsia Tours, are

often stuck in their own little bubble and its onlywhen we step outside of this bubble that we canreally learn about our own business. Im notashamed to say that in just the past week I have

had two travel agents call me up to politely tellme that there are certain areas of our servicethat are simply not up to scratch. I certainly donttake this as a negative, as it is only throughfeedback such as this that we can improve. Thatlevel of honesty would never have been possible ifI had not previously met these agents in personand developed a working relationship. The operator bubble can also make us slightly

delusional. All day, every day, we talk so muchabout ourselves and our products that it borderson being narcissistic. Getting out on the road hasmade me realise that, no matter how successfulour sales may be, we are still a fairly small fish ina very big pond. Having a shiny brochure, slickwebsite and good product is simply not enough, and the only real way of getting our name outthere is by making the effort to meet our trade partners. By meeting agents in their own surroundings,

I can get a much better impression of theirbusiness and their customers. I have learnt thatyou cant really do that just by drinking until theearly hours at a conference. One day I will learnthat it is never a good idea!Although the past two years have been a very

big learning curve for me, there are plenty ofreasons for me to be going on the road, particularly if sales continue to be up 60% year-on-year. However, us operators (namely AITOSpecialist Tour Operators) still do need a helpinghand, so if you are an agent and there is anoperator that you are really interested to workwith, then pick up the phone and invite them. Iftheyre anything like me, it could be years beforethey get round to doing it by themselves.

Accounts, Global Travel & Partnerships, said: The new training academy is designedto ensure agents are aware of our products and help them think pro-actively tomaximise sales of car hire and to fine tune their customer service skills. The Jargonmodule in the new programme is proving popular - its a dry subject but by turning itinto a game dragging the correct answer over a car number plate weve introducedan element of fun.Agents tell us that after training theyve increased their sales of car hire. Selling

Prestige Holidays welcomes booking boost of 51% increase year-on-yearPRESTIGE HOLIDAYS has reported a strong growth in Bermuda business for 2016 (an increase of 51% year-on-year) as a result of early hotel bookings from Bermudas Pink Sale and an increased investment on the island. Nicky Shafe, marketing manager for the operator, said: Bermuda is not an easy sell as its often mistaken as being

expensive and part of the Caribbean. However, it is actually a 1,000 miles north and provides a very different offering. With its pastel-coloured houses with white roofs and beautiful uncrowded pink beaches, Bermuda is sophisticated,

clean and always popular with our clients. It will be in the spotlight next year when it hosts the Americas Cup sailingcompetition in June 2017, but more than a dozen world class sailing races and events are happening on the island in2016, so theres plenty to see this year too. With many holidaymakers avoiding places like Egypt, Tunisia and Turkey, there is a definite trend towards safe

destinations and Bermuda is benefitting from this. The operator is offering savings of up to 456 per couple on selected stays at the Hamilton Princess and Beach Club

when booked by April 30. A weeks stay departing on March 15 costs from 2,009 per person with the savings, andincludes flights with British Airways from Gatwick, breakfast accommodation and private transfers. Call 0142-548 0400 or visit prestigeholidays.co.uk for more details.

When you write a regular column in a travelmagazine, eventually you will have to cover a destination more than once. I had already covered the Triangle, shorts and Barry

Manilow in 2014, what else could I write about this group ofislands (in around 350 words)? I hit Google for someinspiration. It didnt take long and its quite obvious really. The solution was to write about the Chinese influence in Bermuda. The first link to China is a type of garden ornament called

a moon gate. These came to Bermuda in the 19th century. Aswell as being a garden feature, the large stone rings are alsosupposed to bring luck. It is now a tradition for newlyweds inBermuda to walk through a moon gate to ensure their livestogether are blessed with good luck. The second link to China is a bit of a stretch as its golf.

Thanks to Google I now know that the Chinese invented golfa few hundred years before the game was recorded in Scotland. Im really not a fan of golf. I have found that the sticks are

too short and the balls are too small. Also, the outfits scareme a little. As I have no dress sense whatsoever, this justshows how bad golfers can look. Anyway, for some unfathomable reason this game is a

popular pastime, especially in Bermuda. Here there aremore golf courses per square mile than any other place inthe world. If you would like to do the maths, Bermuda covers21 square miles and there are seven golf courses. It is said that some of the courses have spectacular ocean

views. However, you may not be able to see these viewswhile looking for your ball in the bushes or while yourestuck in a bunker - which is where Id be most of the time.Perhaps the golf courses should start adding a moon gate

    to every tee....

It's all about balls forJohn as he explore'sBermuda's popularityas a golf destination...
