    Third Sunday of Easter Luke 24:35-48

    "He stood in their midst and said to

    them, 'Peace be with you.' But they

    were startled and terrified." What

    was so terrifying about being

    wished peace? How ironic that the

    disciples were so scared right at the

    moment that Jesus was offering

    them peace. The fact is that they

    didn't understand what was going

    on. They were already aware at this

    point that Jesus had risen from the

    dead, but now he suddenly appeared

    before them, in a manner that was

    not only totally unexpected, but also

    apparently physically impossible.

    Jesus reassured them with concrete

    actions. He told them to look at him

    and to touch him. He wanted his

    disciples to be comforted by his real

    physical presence among them, not

    just the abstract idea of his

    presence. Once they did this, they

    were "incredulous for joy and were

    amazed."

    This may be the case for us at times

    too. We may not understand the

    mysterious ways in which Jesus is

    present in our lives. His Spirit may

    be present, wishing to bring us

    peace right in the midst of stress,

    sickness, anguish, or pain, but we

    may not recognize him at first. But

    just because he may not "show up"

    in the way we expect doesn't mean

    he isn't with us. The risen Christ

    also wants to give us the gift of

    peace.

    Question of the Week Luke 24:35-48: Why do you think

    Luke emphasizes the physical

    resurrection of Jesus?

    FROM OUR PASTOR

    I am happy to be back and a part of this friendly and vibrant faith community of Santa Sophia. I thank you for

    your warm welcome and your love and support. It makes me feel at home and reminds of some of the fond

    memories I cherished while I was here five years ago. As I begin my ministry at Santa Sophia I request your

    prayers, blessings, and support. I am very pleased to see that our Mass attendance has grown and I also see

    your great longing and love for the Holy Eucharist and growth in faith. Therefore, I wish to dedicate the

    next few columns in the bulletin to write about the Holy Eucharist, the center and source of our faith. As I

    am deeply in love with the Holy Eucharist, I invite you to fall in love and participate actively in the Eucharis-

    tic celebration.

    Let me begin by quoting a few documents to understand the significance of the Holy Eucharist for our faith

    journey and as to how and why we need to take active part in the Eucharist. On December 4, 1963, the Con-

    stitution on the Sacred Liturgy was promulgated by the Fathers of the Second Vatican Council. The first chap-

    ter of this document explains the meaning of active participation by the faithful in the liturgy. The Council

    Fathers wrote these important words: Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to

    that fully conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of

    the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a

    redeemed people (1 Pt 2:9; cf. 2:4-5), is their right and duty by reason of their baptism. For it is the primary

    and indispensable source from which the faithful are to derive the true Christian spirit. (14)

    The liturgy reminds us that Mass is a communal celebration. The priest acts "in the person of Jesus Christ

    and takes the place of the Head of the Body of Christ. The rest of the Bodythe baptized faithfulare pre-

    sent as conscious and active participants. The faithful are encouraged to participate so that: when the Church

    prays or sings or acts, the faith of those taking part is nourished and their minds are raised to God, so that they may offer

    Him their rational service and more abundantly receive His grace (33). The assembled faithful, then, should not

    just be at Mass as strangers or silent spectators; on the contrary, through a good understanding of the

    rites and prayers they should take part in the sacred action, conscious of what they are doing, with devotion

    and full collaboration. (33)

    Though many of us simply assume that "active participation" is the equivalent of "doing something during

    Mass," it is not. Pope Pius X, who conceived the phrase active participation in the Mass, explained it in this

    way: If you wish to participate in the Mass actively, you must follow with your eye, heart, and mouth all that

    happens on the altar He calls for a total presence and awareness of the presence of the Lord in the Eucha-

    rist. When we are fully present and active we allow Jesus to enter our hearts and grace to flow through the

    Eucharist.

    Next time you attend Mass, contemplate the ways you can further your participation.

    FR. DEVDAS

    DAILY PRAYER FOR PRIESTS

    O Jesus, I pray for your faithful and fervent priests;

    For your unfaithful and tepid priests; For your priests laboring at home or

    Abroad in distant mission fields. For your tempted priests;

    For your lonely and desolate priests; For your young priests; For your dying priests;

    For the souls of your priests in Purgatory. But above all, I recommend to you

    The priests dearest to me; The priest who baptized me;

    The priests who absolved me from my sins; The priests at whose Masses I assisted and who gave me

    Your Body and Blood in Holy Communion; The priests who taught and instructed me;

    All the priests to whom I am indebted in any other way

    (especially...) O Jesus, keep them all close to your heart,

    And bless them abundantly in time and in Eternity,

    Amen
