Make Your Holidays ‘Greener’ with These Easy TipsChristmastime and the holiday season are joyous

times for families and friends to get together, but the season also creates mountains of unnecessary waste. It’s estimated that an extra million tons of waste each week is generated between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Enough ribbon is thrown away – about 38,000 miles – to tie a bow around the entire earth!

With a little thought and planning, you can make your holidays a little “greener.” Try the following:

K Give gift certifi cates, tickets, memberships or services, or make a donation to a favorite charity.

a Do not use wrapping paper! Wrap gifts in reus-able paper or cloth bags, or be creative and use hand towels, tablecloths, napkins, fabric scraps, maps, craft paper, newspaper or old posters.

C Consider consumable gifts. Visit your local farmers markets or growers for ideas.

P Consider a compost or worm bin for the gar-den enthusiast.

> Give gifts such as T-shirts, backpacks, hats and socks made from recycled-content materials manu-factured from recycled plastic bottles, or toothbrushes made from recycled yogurt containers.

M Save gas and support our local merchants by buying locally.

M When shopping, bring your own reusable bags. 8 Use LED holiday lights for safety and energy

savings. Solar-powered holiday lights are also avail-able.

a For holiday parties and get-togethers put a marked paper bag, box or special container for recy-cling next to a trash container for your guests’ conve-nience.

K Be sure to recycle aluminum, glass and

plastic containers; metal cans; food boxes; cardboard; cartons; gift wrap (except foil or cellophane); gift boxes; greeting cards and catalogs. (No styrofoam, fi lm plastic, shrink wrap or plastic bags, please.)

_ Email holiday cards.K Check with local mail centers to see if they

will take boxes and packing material for reuse.? Plan meals carefully to avoid excessive left-

overs, or send food packs home with your guests./ Recycle your Christmas tree in the yard waste

cart after removing all decorations and stands. Large trees may need to be cut to fi t into the cart.

Remember, if you receive a new cellphone, laptop, fl at-screen TV or any other computer gadget as a holi-day gift, don’t throw your old one away. Bring your old electrical waste to Gold Coast Recycling & Transfer Station, 5275 Colt St. in Ventura, for free disposal.

Have a Happy and “Green” Holiday Season!

Remove Curbside Barrels Following Weekly Pickup

Reminder: E.J. Harrison & Sons reminds residential

customers that city ordinances require you to remove your curbside barrels after weekly pickup. So remove them and keep them out of sight – except on pickup day. Thank you.

3,000 Volunteers Make Coastal Cleanup Day a Big Success

The 31st Annual California Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 19 was a major success in Ventura County

and across the state. This annual event is about much more than picking up trash. It’s a chance to gather as a community to show our respect for our ocean, wa-terways and local habitats.

California Coastal Cleanup Day began in 1985 and has grown to one of the largest volunteer events on the planet. Ventura County had 2,826 volunteers – families, students, service groups and neighbors – col-lectively picking up 8,228 pounds of trash and 1,038 pounds of recyclables from our coast, creeks, rivers, lakes and shorelines.

Thousands of cigarette butts and lots of plastic bags, as well as other trash, were removed and pre-vented from going out to sea where they would have had a negative effect on marine life.

Statewide, with 75 percent of cleanup sites report-ing, 53,555 volunteers participated in California’s 58 counties. They removed more than 548,450 pounds of trash and more than 65,738 pounds of recyclable ma-terial, totaling over 614,188 pounds. That’s 307 tons, and the fi gures will rise once all cleanup sites report.

Harrison Industries was happy to provide trash and recycling bins at several of the cleanup sites in Ventura, Camarillo and Ojai at no charge. Ventura sites included San Buenaventura State Beach, Marina Park, Rincon Parkway, Ventura Harbor beaches and the Ventura Promenade. Camarillo sites were Cal-leguas Creek and the Mission Oaks Barranca, and in Ojai, volunteers worked in Ojai Creek at Libbey Park.

Next year’s event is set for Sept. 17, 2016, so mark your calendar. For more information visit www.vccoastcleanup.org.

E.J. Harrison & SonsRecycling, Yard Waste and Trash Guidelines

What goes in the Trash?

What Doesn’t go in the Trash or any other cart?

Hopefully, very little. After you have recycled, composted, fi lled the yard waste cart, donated old clothing and goods, and done all of those good things and more – most of the rest can go in the trash.

How to Place Your Cart for Automated Collection

The automated arm of the collection truck needs room to grab the cart. Carts should be placed 2-3 feet apart from each other and from objects such as mailboxes and cars with the wheels facing the curb.

Carts should be out by 7 a.m. on collection days.

2-3 ft.2-3 ft.
