Dear ITE Indiana Section Members,

It is a great honor for me to serve as President of the ITE Indiana Section in 2015, just as it has been a joy to serve the Section in various roles over the past years. My journey began in 2008, when I served on the Seminar Committee, helping to organize the event for the first time at the TMC. I followed this up with several years on the Scholarship Committee, having the privi-lege of being able to present over $25,000 in scholarships over my tenure. My time served on the Board over the past three years has been fulfilling and will continue to be so.

As the economy slowly improves, we have seen greater collab-oration from all stakeholders in our industry, including private consultants, public partners, and vendors. We have all realized that working together, we can advance our industry for the good of the public much more effectively. ITE serves a critical role in this collaboration.

My initiatives for the upcoming year are as follows:1. Continue the progress that we have made in engaging with

the Student Chapters. We need to create as many oppor-tunities as possible to get them involved with the Indiana Section throughout the year. Our section needs to find ways to expand this partnership, beyond Purdue and Trine, to other Universities with transportation engineering curricu-lums, including Rose Hulman, IUPUI, Indiana State, Notre Dame, University of Evansville, and Valparaiso.

2. Review the current status of the Scholarship Program, and work with the Board to adjust this, if necessary. This could be accomplished by sending a survey to the membership to determine their opinions regarding the scoring system, the scholarship amounts, and the overall goals of the program.

3. Develop new ways to provide benefits to Members who are located in northern and southern Indiana. Options might include providing remote access to webinars or facilitating more events outside of Central Indiana.

I want to thank Hardik Shah for his tireless dedication to the Board over his six-year tenure; the advancements made in our organization during this span have been truly remarkable. I would also like to take this opportunity to welcome our new Director, Rich Zielinski.

Best wishes for the holidays and I look forward to serving you, our esteemed Section Members, in 2015.

Doug Valmore, PEITE Indiana Section President Elect 2015

Dear Indiana Section ITE Members,

It’s been too long! Over seven years ago I had my first interaction with the Indiana Section of ITE and you probably haven’t heard from me since. That was 2007 when I was fortunate to receive the Edward J. Cox Memorial Scholarship. That generous assistance enabled me to focus on academics while finances were tight. After graduating from Valparaiso University I trained in INDOT’s Graduate Engineer Development Program which was an unparalleled experience for learning from the best people at the agency. Upon finishing the program, I found a spot with INDOT’s Office of Traffic Safety in Indianapolis. Within that role I developed a passion for traffic

safety. To pursue that calling it only seemed natural to get closer to oper-ations so in June of 2013 I started as the Northwest District Traffic Engi-neer. The position is full of challenges and reconnecting with ITE was an obvious choice. I’ve taken advantages of ITE resources and am looking forward to getting more involved with the Indiana Section.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season,

Alan Holderread, PEINDOT Northwest District

Dear Member of Indiana ITE,

First and foremost, I want to thank all of you for what I consider to be a great year for Indiana ITE. We have had strong attendance at section events and con-tinued success raising money for our Edward J. Cox memorial scholarships. This success is credited to the commit-ment of our members and the agencies/companies that employ them. I am proud to be part of such a strong organization of leaders and professionals. I would like to extend special thanks to my fel-low Board Members, Section Committee Chairs and Committee Members. It has been an honor to work with all of you, and I value all of the friendships I’ve made along the way.

I would like to share a few highlights from 2014:

Annual Sponsorship & Scholarships AwardedIn 2013, we introduced a three-tiered annual sponsorship structure that pro-vided sponsors with added value for their contributions, and this approach continues to be successful. Using this approach, the Section only reaches out to sponsors one time annually. Based on feedback received, this seems to be pre-ferred. In 2014, we generated $12,500 in sponsorships, which allowed us to award $8,000 in scholarships to well-deserving students.

Great Lakes District Meeting in IndyThe Great Lakes District Meeting was in Indianapolis this year, and it was a huge success! Mayor Greg Ballard was one of the keynote speakers, and there were approximately 156 attendees. A big thank you to our planning committee: Jay Wasson (INDOT), Tom Ford (INDOT), Tony Jones (INDOT), Will Tolbert (Parsons Brinckerhoff) and Sandra Jones (Parsons Brinckerhoff).

Student ChaptersIn 2013, a new student chapter was formed at Trine University in Angola. Both student chapters, at Trine and Purdue, seem to be thriving. Our Section

hosted students dinners at both univer-sities this year – at Purdue in November and at Trine in December. Our Section also allocates specific budgets for these chapters, to help offset expenses relat-ed to technical conferences. We are also pleased to announce that Indiana State University is considering a new student chapter. We will be offering our support to Dr. Michael Williamson, the new civil engineering instructor at ISU, as prog-ress is made in Terre Haute.

Credit CardThe Indiana Section of ITE has joined the 21st century! We obtained a credit card associated with the Section checking account to provide improved payment capabilities.

StarChapter WebsiteIn 2013, we upgraded our website and blended it with a cloud-based manage-ment platform provided by StarChapter. The new website allows streamlined management of event registration, mem-ber information and daily operations. This platform has greatly enhanced the efficiency of board responsibilities and communications. The website continued to evolve this year as we added job-post-ing capabilities and photos of Section events.

In closing, I would like to thank everyone who helped make this another great year for Indiana ITE. I also want to thank those who I have relied on during my tenure on the board. It has truly been an honor and a privilege to serve as your 2014 Section President.

Wishing you all a very happy holiday season!

Ericka W.H. Miller, PEIndiana Section President 2014

Held annually for the past 100 years, Road School attracts hundreds of representatives from Cities, Towns, Counties, Consulting Firms, INDOT, Purdue and others. As part of the tradition, Indiana Section helped in the planning efforts of traffic engineering tracks at the conference.

The 2014 Purdue Road School Banquet was held on March 12th at the Purdue Union. The location was moved from the Alumni Center to make the event more convenient for both ITE Members and students, and this move was a huge success. Fifty-two guests were entertained by a presentation by Mike Cline, Purdue University Vice President of Physical Facilities and former INDOT Commissioner, who spoke about the immense facility expansion program that is currently underway at many of Purdue’s campuses, as well as multi-modal improvements.

Our Section then presented scholarship awards to three outstanding students. The 2014 Edward J. Cox Memorial Transportation Scholarship recipients were:

Michael Volovski, Ph.D. Candidate from Purdue ($2,000)

Andrea Bailey, Master Candidate from Purdue ($2,000)

Patrick Toth, Senior from Purdue ($4,000)

We have had another terrific fundraising year in 2014, and hope to present at least $9,000 in awards again in 2015.

The Edward J. Cox Memorial Transportation Scholarship Award is presented annually by the Indiana Section of ITE to some of the best and brightest future leaders in the Indiana transportation industry. The main purpose of the award is to encourage students to consider Transportation Engineering and Planning in their studies and career aspirations, and to provide partial financial support for tuition and fees to students who have demonstrated an interest and are likely to work in the transportation field.
