The Blue MeanieThis device was made using Pringles cans as the fans and it was also constructed of scrap wood. The Generator is made of a magnet rotating about the inside of another Pringles can wrapped with magnet wire.
Mechanical and Electrical AspectsMechanical
Air blows the fan which makes the blades spinThe fan turns the rod which the magnets are
connected toElectrical
As the fan turns, the magnets that are connected to the rod of the fan turns to create a magnetic current
The current cycles through the wire and into the light bulb to create electricity and lights the bulb
Efficiency Calculationsρ = Density of air = 1.204 kg/m3
A = Area of fan blades = π*(.114 m)2 = .0408 m2
v = Velocity of wind = 15 mph = 6.71 m/s
PTheoretical = 1/2ρAv3 = 10 Watts
CostPringles Can - $1.00/each
Wire - $20.00
Magnets - $5.00
CD’s - $1.00/eachWood Scraps
IssuesPerformance
Testing went bad numerous of timesTime
We all were pretty busy through the month of April with classes, jobs, extra curriculum activities, and etc.
FanCouldn’t get the fan to spinCouldn’t figure what we wanted to make the fan out of
WireCouldn’t seem to find the right type of copper wire
ConclusionsWe learned how to generate electricityWe loved the experience working together in
a groupOur project seemed to work when we tested
itWe are happy to be finishing up with EF
