Introduction
My name is Telma Cabral, I’m student at University of Aveiro, and I’m taking a degree
in Translation course, now in my 3rd and supposedly last year.
This semester I frequented Inglês Práticas de Tradução subject, guied by Margaret
Gomes (Maggie).
This portfolio has as an objective shows the work that has been done along this
semester, the different areas that can be explored as a translator and how I explored each
area, the difficulties, which sources I used to get through those difficulties and the final work.
The sources used as a research and support were “Infopédia”, “IATE” and “Google”.
The portfolio will have as content advertising, informative leaflets, instruction
manuals, and official documentations, each type followed by ethnography, difficulties, analysis
and sources used to overcome those challenges and difficulties.

Windows vs. Walls
Este grande esforço explica porque criamos o que criamos e fazemos o que
fazemos. O que nos faz levantar todos os dias é a perspectiva de criarmos
caminhos por cima, por baixo, à volta e através de paredes. Para iniciar um
diálogo entre centenas de dispositivos, biliões de pessoas e um mundo idéias.
Para elevar o mais pequeno de nós e lançar o mais audaz de nós. Mas, mais
importante ainda unir-nos aos quatro cantos das nossas vidas digitais e uns aos
outros.
Commentary:
The source text wasn’t very complex relatively to words or phrases,
but it became a little hard to translate, due to find equivalents in
Portuguese to keep the meaning and the message the author wanted to be
delivered to the reader.
This text in terms of length and complexity is short, simple, don’t
contain technical terms.
At the end the target text was okay, close of the original meaning
and the message was kept.
The sources used were “Infopedia” and “Iate”.
Faça a jogada certa
Commentary:
The source text was approachable in terms of language construction;
it didn’t contained very complexes words and phrases although there were
some moments where a few words became the translation slower, due to
difficulty finding equivalents in the target source.
To overcome these difficulties I turned to online dictionaries such as
“Infopédia” and “Iate”. These tools were a really good support.
Advertisement translation challenges
The main challenge to overcome was to adapt the message to the target culture, but without
get too much distant from the source text.
Another challenge is translate the source text without transform the target text very complex
and long, because advertisement text are phrases very short, simple, so in target translation
the phrase organization must be very similar without losing the message contained.
The sources I used were “Infopedia” and “Iate”, they’re the translation online sources I most
trust and are more helpful to me.
Informative Leaflet
Instruction Manuals
Plasma Pedestal
Commentary:
The plasma pedestal was a hard manual to translate; it had specific
terms, complex phrase structure.
Once again I had to turn to online manual examples, online
dictionaries so I could approach both texts, and specially become the target
text understanding to the target culture, in this case, Portuguese culture.
So, to the target text become more understanding I tried to use a
language more accessible to the manual client.
At the end I think my objective was complete and the translation
was good.
Dinosaur Egg
Commentary:
The Dinosaur Egg source text was a little complicated because it was
a translation pretty messed up, so before we translated into Portuguese we
had to correct those mistakes and then translated.
To correct we turned to online dictionaries and grammar, and to
translate we turned only to online dictionaries.
Both correction and translation were good, the final result was more
professional.
Infra-red Motion Sensor
Commentary:
A manual text it’s always complicated to translate due to the
technical terms and the phrases complexity.
By translating to the target text, I searched on web some examples
of manuals to help me find the technical terms equivalents to the source
text and I also turned to an online dictionary “IATE”, it’s very helpful with
technical terms.
At the end the target text was approachable from the source the
text.
Official Documentation
Official Documentation Commentary:
The diplomas and certificates are difficult to translate due to the
language elegancy used, to the formal words, phrases complexity, the
language used is very careful, very structured.
So by translating this documentation I had to keep the elegancy, the
formality, and the careful.
I searched online examples to guide me a little in which could be the
language to use in English, It became hard to me, but the research on web
and the support of online dictionaries, helped me to make a good
translation
Conclusion
Through this long semester, different areas were explored and
different text types translated, so it was good for me to learn more about
these areas, accomplish more vocabulary and learn to work with new tools.
After the semester and the creation of this portfolio, I can tell I got
better in my way of work, translation, organization and the language that
must be used in each area or situation.
It was a productive semester and I hope to get better and better the
next one.
So see you next semester.
