THE GREAT FALLS PRE-RELEASE VOLUNTEER/MENTOR PROGRAM by Sheena JarveyOne of the greatest indicators that a society welcomes back formerly incarcerated people is when volunteersspend time with them. The Great Falls Pre-Release is honored to have our volunteer staff. They do a varietyof jobs which enhance the goals of the Pre-Release to help prepare female residents for the community. Thismonth will highlight the mentoring aspect of the Volunteer Program.

Volunteering at an agency means that the volunteers are in sync with the goals of that agency and work toenhance the mission statement. All of the Pre-Release volunteers are working here because they believe thatpeople can change. The volunteers are motivated self-starters. A volunteer job is a contract between thevolunteer’s sense of responsibility and her time management There is no paycheck or retirement fund. Thereward is purely intrinsic in the job. This makes volunteering one of the highest forms of service.

Great Falls Pre-Release volunteers do provide a variety of extremely helpful services. Some volunteers workone-on-one with the female residents, in a mentor/mentee capacity. These caring and dedicated women havebrought many benefits to the female residents. When a volunteer is matched with a resident, she becomesa great source of support for the resident. During 2011 there were 13 new mentor/mentee matches. Thesematches do a variety of activities together. These activities may include going for coffee, walks in the park, visits to art galleries, shopping or attending religious services. The most important feature, however, is thefocus on the individual resident and is a way of letting her know her well-being is important. The volunteersare positive, stable role models, showing the residents that the community cares about their recovery. TheGreat Falls community has really provided amazing volunteers and the credit to the stature and success ofthis program goes to the dedication, vision and consistency of these volunteers.

We always welcome new talent, so if you, or someone you know, is interested in being a volunteer at theGreat Falls Pre-Release or need more information about the program, please phone Sheena Jarvey at455-0344.

For National Volunteer Month April 2012, we would like to salute the following volunteers:If you see any of these skilled and dedicated volunteers, please thank them. Their service means so much.
