Whitelining success - at last! The erosion of the whitelining at the junction of Harvest Way and Oakmead has led to many residents contacting us to express safety concerns, and tales of near misses due to it being unclear as to which road has priority. After a lot of lobbying, and with the help of local councillors, we have secured the renewal of the whitelining on this critical area. You will also note that whitelining has been renewed at various points on Jubilee Way. See the before and after photos:

Happy 100th birthday!Sybil Lee, resident of Madley Park House care home, will celebrate her 100th birthday on 11th October.

Sybil was born in the Hollybush pub in Witney and she lived there for 21 years with her five brothers and sisters until she got married. Sybil’s Dad sadly passed away in his 40s and her Mum continued running the pub after his death. Sybil was one of the first students at The Batt School. After leaving school, she worked at Witney Laundry in Corn Street until she had her children (a boy and a girl), then went back there and worked part time. Sybil used to enjoy swimming at the bathing house with friends.

Happy Birthday, Sybil!

Recycling newsFurther to a consultation by West Oxfordshire District Council:

• From 1 April 2017 they will be introducing a £30 charge for garden waste bins.

• From October 2017 they will be rolling out wheelie bins for recycling. These will replace the current black boxes and will be collected fortnightly. You will still need to have a black box to recycle your glass bottles and jars.

There is more information on the District Council website: www.westoxon.gov.uk/residents/bins-recycling/recycling-service-changes-2017/ and we will bring you further information as we find out more.

Local councillorsUpdated details of our Town, District and County Councillors who serve us on Madley Park, along with contact details and the committees they serve on can be found on our noticeboard outside the Co-op and on our website (www.madleyparkresidents.co.uk).

Bus ServicesGo Ride Community Interest Company took over the running of our town centre bus service on 21st July. The service was initially a Monday-Friday service but has now been extended to include a peak morning timetable on school days and a Saturday morning service. The additional times for the service are displayed on our noticeboard outside the Co-op. If you would like an updated timetable showing the additional services, call David Bates on 708231, leaving your address and we will get one to you. Please note that this is a short term service and we are working hard with our councillors to secure a longer term town centre bus service. Town centre bus users can receive a voucher for a free tea or coffee at Witney Blanket Hall!

MPRA Annual General MeetingThe Residents’ Association AGM will be held on Wednesday 26th October, 6.30-8pm at Madley Park Hall.

Contact Janette Cardy to discuss YOUR best route to a healthier, fitter you. www.janettecardyfitness.co.uk

projects we are working on for Madley Park, including improvements to French Square and our children and young people’s play areas.

We will also have a panel of County, District and Town Councillors and Police for you to put your questions to.

There are lots of good things happening on Madley Park. Please put this date in your diary to hear more, and also to feed in your thoughts and ideas on how we can improve things further.

Autumn Litter PickThe next litter pick will take place on Saturday 29th October at 10am. The co-ordination point is on the square outside the Co-op. We have 20 litter picking tools to lend out. If you have your own, please bring them along, together with thick gloves and strong footwear. Children are welcome if accompanied by an adult.

Local GraffitiWe are currently having a purge on graffiti on Madley Park, some of which has been

around for several months and occasionally even longer. Specific areas identified are on the bridge, neighbourhood centre and the enclosed track at the bottom of Wood Green School. If you have identified any other places, please let us know on [email protected].

Weedbusters!A combination of good growing weather and County Council cutbacks has meant that it’s been a bumper year for weeds on Madley Park.

Weeds can cause the breakup of pavements and road surfaces, once established.

To complement our regular Litter Picks we are also looking to bring together a group of people for spring 2017 to tackle problem weed areas. Witney Woodland Volunteers who regularly, and voluntarily, care for our green spaces and river footpaths in Witney will be offering us advice.

If you can offer one-off or regular support to care for our open and green spaces on Madley Park, please contact David Bates on 708231 or drop us an email on [email protected].

Ghosts on Madley Park?Imagine yourself relaxing in the garden on a warm evening enjoying a glass of wine and, in the corner of your eye, catching a fleeting sight of something eerily pale and ghostly drifting through the twilight, a strange, weird shriek echoing through the air. . . . .

This is exactly what I experienced on a summer’s evening a few years ago. Not, as you might possibly think, a ghostly remnant of life on Madley before the first houses were even planned, but a reminder that wildlife can adapt to our modern way of living. The pale shape was a Barn Owl, occasionally seen in and around Madley Park. Recently my wife turned left out of Harvest Way onto Jubilee Way and was accompanied for a short distance by a Barn Owl flying parallel to the car along the wide grass verge – probably searching the long grass for small mammals, disturbed by the motion of vehicles on the road.

The Barn Owl Tyto alba is so named because it used to regularly nest in large open barns, hunting around the farm for small mammals such as field voles, its staple diet. With changes in agriculture over recent decades the traditional barn has almost completely disappeared and in an attempt to provide

alternative nesting sites for Barn Owls, nest boxes have been installed in suitable habitats. Locally, the Wychwood Project has supported efforts to conserve Barn Owls which aim to:

• identify potential sites in existing old barns or old hollow trees where artificial nesting boxes can be installed close to suitable foraging areas

• make landowners aware of management techniques that enhance habitats as owl feeding areas

• provide participative opportunities (including monitoring work) for a better understanding of the owl’s life history and habits.

Another colloquial name for the Barn Owl is Screech Owl – referring to the strange, haunting call made by the male when courting the female. Other common names include White Owl and Silver Owl but it is the name Ghost Owl which I think best evokes the soft, silent flight, like that of a huge moth and the eerie call of the Barn Owl – one of Britain’s most beautiful, charismatic birds.

If you are interested in Barn Owls and would like to learn more please contact the Wychwood Project, [email protected].
