Socket under clean
Laser BeamThe TT-ALSC-300 Laser Cleaner system is
designed to remove oxides, solder stains, etc., in a broad-brushed approach, withlaser spot sizes greater than 6mm. Shortand rapid laser pulses produce micro-plasma burst, shockwave and thermalpressure which results in the sublimationof the target surface contaminants(vaporized).
Metal surfaces are well-suited for lasercleaning applications. Our optimized laserbeam and energy settings will not alter ordamage the laser treated surface. Onlythe surface dirt or oxide targeted forremoval is affected and will not to reactwith the base metal surface.

EFFECT OF LASER ON SOCKET HOUSING MATERIAL
CONFIDENTIAL

TORLON
Discoloration is seen on the Torlon material after subjecting it to Laser at 780V energy and 30 shots. No significant effect or damage on the material.

CERAMIC PEEK
Results on NHK Ceramic Peek after 100 shots at various power levels. Only discoloration isseen and no damage or effect on the material.

• Each spot was subjected todamage threshold test with aLaser energy of 980V andshot 100 times on the samespot.• Only discoloration is seenon the surface of the CeramicPeek and no damage on thematerial.

Mask is used so that the exposed area of the socket housing is covered and only the pins aretargeted by the laser. The mask narrows the laser beam specific to pogo pin area only andavoid burn/discoloration to general area of socket base. In this case, a mask is neededbecause the handler has a “device presence check” feature which could mistakenly detect thediscolored area on the socket to be a device.

USE OF CUSTOMIZED MASK TO PREVENT DISCOLORATION

CONCLUSION
• Other than the discoloration on the socket housing material, the laser beam has nosignificant effect and damage. The laser did not alter the material characteristics such ussurface finish, hardness and dimension.
• A customized mask can be used if the discoloration on the socket housing is critical, particularly on handler with special feature like “device presence check”. Mask can be usedalso if the discoloration on the socket material is a 5S audit issue.

Note: Data is based from customer evaluation. Results may vary depending on customer set-up condition and application.CONFIDENTIAL
• Improved 1st pass yield due to better CRES on pins.
• Less frequency of cleaning which improves equipment utilization and translates for more production output ( less machine downtime and re-test of units).
• Average downtime occurrences is reduced by almost 70%
• Faster cleaning time
• No consumable media – no abrasives, chemicals and solvents to purchase, handle, store and dispose.
