RESEARCH We maintain a varied and active research agenda at the center that includes partners from across the University. Research teams explore the impact of robots, multimedia, therapy animals, wraparound supports, and various other support strategies on the quality of life and successful functioning of individuals on the spectrum. We also evaluate the most effective ways to train teachers and other professionals to work with students and clients on the spectrum. Practicum Opportunities with Outpatient Services The Outpatient Clinic at the Burkhart Center is currently offering practicum opportunities for graduate and undergraduate students seeking experience working with young children with ASD in a clinical setting. Research Assistantships are available for students in face-to- face programs on a competitive basis. Assistantships include tuition waivers and stipends. Scholarships, travel funding, and research stipends are also available. Graduate Study and Academic Programs Ph.D. in Special Education Ph.D. in School Psychology Teacher Training Institute The Burkhart Center’s Applied Behavior Analysis - Teacher Training Institute Program (ABA-TTI) at Texas Tech University offers professional training for teachers or clinicians working with students with autism and who are working towards becoming a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA). This program is offered through a professional development experience culminating in BCBA supervision and hands-on training in functional behavioral assessment and function - based treatment design. Those who qualify work to complete their Masters of Special Education with an Applied Behavior Analysis Graduate Certificate. Outpatient ClinicThe Outpatient Clinic provides targeted supports to individuals with autism and their families through Focused ABA services, social skills classes, and contracted consultations. Focused ABA services will address specific behavior concerns and goals through individual treatment, parent training, social opportunities, and treatment transition planning. Clients accepted into the program will be eligible for up to 30 hours of one-on-one and small group therapy each month. Social skills classes will be offered for individuals with autism of all ages. Classes will run 2-3 times each semester and will have a variety of themes. Contracted consultations with outside agencies can also be provided to organizations seeking assistance with training or behavioral support.o For more information about the Outpatient Clinic please contact [email protected]

COMMUNITY-BASED SERVICES:

Performing Arts ActivitiesThe Burkhart Center partners with the College of Visual and Performing Arts to offer theatre and dance classes for elementary and high school students on the spectrum. We also support the BurkTech Players, a theatre performance group composed of TTU students and young adults with ASD from the community.

Parents’ Night OutParents’ Night Out is open to children with ASD and their siblings ages 3-13 once a month during the school year. Supervised care in a fun environment is offered so thatparents can enjoy a night out.

Camp BurkhartThe Burkhart Center provides summer camp activities for elementary through high school aged students with ASD.The camps are funded in part by a generous gift fromScott Malouf.

Family Fun EventsFamily Fun Events are designed for children with ASD and their families to participate in fun activities and also provide opportunities for parents to share their experiences withone another.

Annual Autism ConferenceThe Annual Autism Conference is jointly sponsored by Region 17 Education Service Center and the Burkhart Center toprovide continuing education and training to educators and parents in the South Plains area.

The Burkhart Family Endowed Lecture SeriesThe lecture series brings distinguished speakers in ASD education to Texas Tech University and the Lubbock community.

SERVICESCENTER-BASED SERVICES:Burkhart Transition AcademyThe Burkhart Transition Academy provides post-secondary, educational, strength-based assessment and programming to aid in the successful transition of people with ASD into higher education, vocational, or other settings. CASE: Connections for Academic Success & EmploymentCASE is an innovative, individualized, and strength-based college transition program that supports college students with autism and other complex disabilities to earn an academic degree or vocational certification.
