SEAFARERS OF THE FUTURE

Generation α is defined as the ones born with tablets/smart phones existing (2010+)

This generation takes connectivity and technology as granted: anytime, everywhere, BYOD

They will not just use technology, they will integrate it into their lives

They will/could be better educated due to more access to information as generations before and they will get more robust education through online learning earlier in life

Simple decision support tools will be part of their life in almost every app

Our maritime industry is not prepared for this (yet)

THE GENERATION ALPHA CHALLENGE

HOW TO ANSWER THE CHALLENGESFUTURE PLANS FOR IMPROVED TRAINING METHODS

Flexibility will be more important than scheduled trainings, collaborating will be more important than commanding. And this needs to be addressed by the maritime industry.

With regards to training this means:

Micro-learning, short lessons at any time of convenience

Personalized training/e-learning; remote tutoring

Gamification of training content and Multi-Player-Games, but with real mathematics behind

Using ‘real-life’ situation for scenario generation

New content distribution technologies:

Web-based Simulation & Tutorials on every platform

Virtual reality (VR)

Augmented and mixed reality (AR/MR)

HOW TO PROVE CREW COMPETENCE ?

Learning-Management-Systems provide educationprogress tracking

Automatically scheduled crew assessment. It focuses on mostproblematic areas identified during last assessments andtrainings, notes from chief mates and global statistics

If a problem is identified during the assessment, the data goesto training planning software which automatically re-adjuststhe training plan to revisit the problematic area

Self-paced distant training reduces the onsite training durationand thus reduces the training cost and crew standby time

Distant instructor-led training on request allows to trainseveral boards simultaneously without physical presenceonsite, thus reducing the training costs

Track danger situation misses, measure stress and fatigue during the training usingwearable neuro devices and use the data for assessment and evaluation

THE ASSESSMENT CHALLENGE

EXAMPLE OF NEW VR TRAINING SOLUTIONSSURVIVAL CRAFT SIMULATOR (SCS) – TRAINING OBJECTIVES

SIMULATION OF THE MAIN LIFEBOAT PROCEDURES

Preparation of survival craft

Maneuver survival craft to clear ship and return to falls

Launch & board survival craft

Recover and stow survival craft

SURVIVAL CRAFT SIMULATIONCONFIGURATIONS

CLASSROOM

PART TASK

FULL MISSION

SCS COMPONENTS

CONFIGURATION

Two alternatives:

1. Addition to existing simulation system, based on supply of SCS related softwareto an existing NTPRO classroom, part task bridge or full mission bridge which already got conning module, conning VIS module or VIS module, controls and COTS PC hardware.

2. New simulator system

One Survival Craft Functionality Module per simulator; One IBID Software Module per work place or bridge

SCS Dedicated Hardware (release and brake handles)for the part task and full mission configurations

Train-the-trainer

Course package (exercises, e-Tutor content, PPTs)

NEW COMPETENCES NEEDED IN SHIP-TO-SHORE INTERACTION

Larger Shipping companies creatingFleet Operation Centres already

Objectives are: asset monitoring & protection, efficiency analytics, navigation safetyimprovements, compliance assurance

What skills and pre-requisites are requiredfor the FOC collaboration?

Acceptance/respect by ships officers (rotation?)

Clear role understanding on both sides

Mutual decision support

Using ship-borne data for predictionsand rehearsal Simulation

Uploading Simulation results and recommendations back to the ship

This is what we call ‘Fleet Resource Management’

NEW COMPETENCES NEEDED IN SHIP-TO-SHORE INTERACTION

The new collaboration model can be at best trained by means of Simulation:

Multi-role team ‘gaming’

Try & Error: optimising processes, workload share and responsibilities

Critical situation brief and debrief using ‘live’ data collected from the ships

Possible for the Bridge, the Engineand the Cargo team and combined!

Closing the loop between theory and hands-on by using real life data for training
