Asbestos AlertNaturally occurring asbestos is common in serpentine rock and soil in California. These soils occur within the McAfee Gulch and John Bull areas. Visitors should take measures to reduce exposure to dust while in the area. Children are most at risk from exposure.

To reduce exposure you may avoid the area or limit time during dry or dusty conditions and space vehicles/horses widely when travelling.

Camanche South Shore Staging Area Parking for cars and horse trailers. Potable and non-potable water. Restrooms. Access to the parking area is through the Camanche South Shore Recreation Area main gate. Leashed dogs are allowed on the narrow gauge trail, in and south of the Camanche South Shore Recreation Area.

Camanche South Shore Staging Area W to Western Terminus 4.8 mi / 2.5 hrs

EASY to MODERATE - Going west from the Camanche South Shore Staging Area, hikers can enjoy a wonderful oak savanna

experience as the trail meanders through open grassland dotted with blue and live oaks and majestic gray pines. Prolific stands of

spring wildflowers can be seen as the plant community transitions into grassland.

Camanche South Shore Staging Area E to Cooks Mesa Trail Access Point

5.8 mi / 3 hrsEASY to MODERATE - Going east from the Camanche South Shore Staging area to Cooks Mesa, this part of the trail traverses the

hills along Camanche Reservoir, with shaded stretches, beautiful lake views, and potable water at each end. A great choice for

year-round hiking.

Cooks Mesa Trail Access Point Parking for cars. No trailers. Potable and non-potable water. Restrooms.

Cooks Mesa Trail Access Point E to west boundary of US Bureau of Land Management property

11.4 mi / 5.5 hrs

EASY to MODERATE - Head east along this shady trail for beautiful views and abundant history, including 49er mining camps, old ferry and bridge crossings and Native American sites. The trail crosses Penn Mine, where EBMUD restored environmentally damaged areas.

Stream flows may be colorful because of minerals in the water. Notice remnants of stone buildings and contemporary stream flow monitoring stations. Further east, the trail winds through heavy stands of oak and pine to Morrow Suspension Flume Site, with picnic

tables, hitching posts, and spectacular views of the river canyon. See stone abutments from an old water flume across the canyon and bridge remnants downstream. The north fork of the trail offers great views and follows the Lancha Plana and Poverty Bar ditch.

Campo Seco Staging Area Parking for cars and horse trailers. Non-potable water. Restrooms.

Campo Seco Staging Area W through US Bureau of Land Management (BLM) property

6.6 mi / 3.5 hrs

MODERATE - Enjoy excellent views on this trail, which begins in grasslands and passes Watertown Pond – a good birding site – before heading up to a forested ridge. On a clear day you’ll see

Mt. Diablo to the West. Picnic tables, benches and a hitching post are available at Vista Dos Lagos. Heading west, the trail meaders through a mix of grasses, oaks and chaparral. Two ephermeral pools

bloom with unique flowers in spring. You’ll find many informal trails and roads on the BLM section; please note BLM land use regulations.

Campo Seco Staging Area E to the Kiln 10.0 mi / 5 hrs

MODERATE - Heading east, look for the habitat restoration at Salt Gulch and the historic Wildermuth homestead site. After crossing open oak woodland, the trail turns north and climbs to Lawry Flat, a wide bowl of open grassland. Here, the 2.4 mile John Bull

Loop Trail joins the MCCT offering an alternate route with some beautiful vistas of Pardee Reservoir, and returning to the MCCT 1 mile northeast. The nearby OK Corral remains a working livestock corral. Take a short detour to the Olive Orchard where 100-year-old

trees still bear fruit. Next, descend toward Pardee Reservoir and cross a short belt of serpentine soil (naturally occurring asbestos) and a brushy landscape. A good turnaround point is the kiln, likely used by local homesteaders to manufacture cement.

Rich Gulch Trail Access Point Parking for cars. No trailers. Accessible restrooms are nearby at James Bar Townsite.

Rich Gulch Trail Access Point W to the Kiln 11.6 mi / 6 hrs

EASY - Going west, the first 0.25 miles is gentle, offering a near-level walk and opportunities for most anyone to enjoy nature. There is a bench and accessible restroom are at the overlook.

STRENUOUS - James Bar to Patti’s Point is a rugged and beautiful section which required intensive stone work to build. Though steep, this beautiful trail is perched along the river canyon and boasts

exceptional views. You’ll also see spectacular springtime wildflower displays. MODERATE to STRENUOUS - Continuing along the upper shoulder of the canyon, the trail feels remote and wild.

Rich Gulch Trail Access Point E to Middle Bar Trail Access Point 4.2 mi / 2.5 hrs

MODERATE - Heading east, the trail meanders through a beautiful and rich historic area as it snakes through oak woodland. Poor Man’s Gulch Bridge is a steel bridge installed in 2009. Shaded

slopes east of the bridge make summer hikes more enjoyable. The current Middle Bar Bridge (1912) is the latest incarnation of the

river crossing; between 1851 and 1911, three other bridges were constructed and lost.

Middle Bar Trail Access Point Parking for cars. No trailers. Accessible restrooms. In addition to trail access, there is a takeout to provide a safe removal point for rafts, kayaks or canoes from the Mokelumne River.

Middle Bar Trail Access Point E to Eastern Terminus 4 mi / 2 hrs

EASY to MODERATE - This section offers a 3.8-mile loop. The area is full of 49er history, offers lovely scenery, and provides a more

intimate experience with the Mokelumne River, especially on the narrow portion of the loop. The narrow section of trail is

pedestrian only.

China Gulch Staging Area Parking for cars and horse trailers. Non-potable water. Restrooms. Parking and potable water available at the Camanche North Shore Recreation Area.

China Gulch Staging Area E to Eastern Terminus 9.8 mi / 5 hrs

EASY to MODERATE - This trail has lake views from high points and ends with a pleasant amble through oak savannah and open, rolling country. A 3-mile loop is available along East Cove.

A portion of this narrow trail follows an old water canal. As the trail heads south near the shoreline, there are views of Horse Island. Beyond the loop, the trail passses Little China Gulch and China

Gulch, once home to Miwok Indians. Further east, piles of earth are the last remnants of the gold rush town of Lancha Plana, once home to nearly 1,000 residents.
