Planned Asphalt Pavement Repairs on I-459 NB and SB Between Hoover and Bessemer

BIRMINGHAM – On Sunday, March 6 beginning at 6:30 am the Alabama Department of

Transportation will begin patching the rough pavement on I-459 northbound and southbound

from Exit 10 (AL 150) in Hoover to I-59 (Milepost 0.00) in Bessemer. This work will require

the outside (right) and middle lanes to be closed in the area the repairs are being made.

All lanes are expected to be opened no later than 6:00 pm.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe

Planned Emergency Bridge Repairs on I-459 NB at I-59 NB, in Trussville

BIRMINGHAM – On Wednesday, March 3 beginning at 3 a.m. the Alabama Department of

Transportation will begin emergency bridge repairs on I-459 northbound on the exit ramp to I-59

northbound (bridge over Edwards Lake Rd.) as follows:

This work will require the inside (left) lane to be closed from just north of the entrance

ramp from Exit 32 (US 11) to just north of the bridge where the repairs are being made.

Also note that one lane of Edwards Lake Rd. will be closed using flaggers at various

stages of the repairs.

All lanes are expected to be opened no later than 5 a.m. Thursday March 4.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe

work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT

Planned Emergency Bridge Repairs on I-65 SB at University Blvd., in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM – On Tuesday, March 8 the Alabama Department of Transportation will begin

emergency bridge repairs on I-65 southbound at the University Blvd. Bridge. This work will be

as follows:

Tuesday, March 8 thru Saturday, March 12 from 9 a.m. thru 6 p.m.

University Blvd. eastbound outside (right) lane will closed to allow workers to repair the

bridge.

Monday, March 14 from 6 a.m. thru 6 p.m.

Work will continue; however, there will not be any lane closures in this area.

Tuesday, March 15 from 8 p.m. thru 5 a.m.

I-65 northbound and southbound outside (right) lanes will be closed to remove the

temporary concrete barrier wall.

Multiple Lane Closures and Rolling Road Blocks on I-65 SB between MP 267 and MP 266, in Birmingham Work Continues on I-22

BIRMINGHAM – Work continues on Interstate 65 as part of the Alabama Department of

Transportation’s project to build an interchange to connect I-65 to I-22 in Jefferson County as follows:

Weather permitting, Tuesday, March 8 thru Thursday, March 10 between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., there

will be a multiple lane closures on the I-65 southbound between Milepost 267 (Walkers Chapel Road) and

Milepost 266 (US-31 Interchange). The lane closures are necessary to perform Dynamic Message Sign

repairs.

The lane closures will require the use of one (1) Alabama State Trooper. In the event of inclement

weather, this work will not take place.

Once completed, I-22 will be an interstate highway between Birmingham and Memphis, TN.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists are requested to

consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and other

work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT thanks motorists for their patience during

Planned Roadway Repairs on AL 150, in Hoover From Jackson Drive (MP 10.4) to Lakehouse Dr. (MP 10.0)

HOOVER – On Tuesday, March 8, weather conditions permitting, beginning at 9 a.m., the

Alabama Department of Transportation will begin roadway repairs located on AL 150 from

Jackson Drive (MP 10.4) to Lakehouse Drive in Hoover. This work will require various lane

closures in the westbound and eastbound directions. The lane closure times are as follows:

Tuesday, March 8 - 9 a.m. thru 3 p.m. The westbound outside (right) lane will be closed in the area where work is being

performed.

Wednesday, March 9 thru Friday March 11 - 9 a.m. thru 3 p.m. The westbound inside (left) lane, the middle turn lane and the eastbound inside (left) lane

will be closed in the area where work is being performed.

Saturday, March 12 - 9 a.m. thru 3 p.m.

The eastbound outside (right) lane will be closed in the area where work is being

performed.

Weather permitting this work will be accomplished in five (5) days.

12th Ave. North Bridge Replacement Project Continues, in Birmingham

JEFFERSON COUNTY –. Weather permitting, the construction project to replace the 12th Avenue

North Bridge that spans over I-59/20 just north of downtown Birmingham will continue as follows:

Monday, March 14 and Tuesday March 15 at 7 p.m., the I-59 southbound (inside) 2 lanes

will be closed until approximately 5 a.m. between Tallapoosa Street (Exit 128) and 31st N (Exit

126-B) to perform construction activities and to also remove equipment and materials from the

interstate median.

State Troopers will be on duty to provide safety for the traveling public as well as the construction

crew.

All other scheduled work at this time to be performed during the week will not require any interstate

lane closures.

Work on this project will require the closure of the 12th Avenue North Bridge until the new bridge is

complete (approximately June 2016).

A detour will be installed to direct traffic to use the nearby 31st Street North Bridge for access to 12th

Avenue North and Vanderbilt Road while construction work is ongoing.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work

BIRMINGHAM – Work continues on Interstate 65 as part of the Alabama Department of

Transportation’s project to build an interchange to connect I-65 to I-22 in Jefferson County.

Weather permitting, Wednesday, March 16 thru Friday, March 18 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

there will be intermediate delays on I-65 northbound. There will be multiple lane closures and

rolling roadblocks to slow I-65 traffic northbound from Daniel Payne Drive (Exit 264) to 33rd

Avenue North (Exit 263) Traffic interruptions are needed to perform Milling, Asphalt Paving and

Roadway Patches.

This operation will require the use of two (2) Alabama State Troopers. In the event of inclement

weather, Milling, Asphalt Paving and Traffic Switch will not take place.

Planned Guardrail Repairs on Outside Shoulders and in the Median of I-59, I-65 and I-459, in Birmingham

BIRMINGHAM – On Sunday, March 20, weather conditions permitting, beginning at 8 p.m., the

Alabama Department of Transportation will begin repairs to the guardrail located in the following

locations:

I-59 – on the outside shoulders and median in the northbound and southbound directions from

the Tuscaloosa County Line (MP 100.5) in Bessemer to the St. Clair County Line (MP 147.8)

in Argo. This work may require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes at

various times and locations in the area where guardrail repairs are being made.

I-65 – on the outside shoulders and median in the northbound and southbound directions from

the Shelby County Line (MP 248.7) in Hoover to Fieldstown Rd. (Exit 270) in Gardendale.

This work may require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes at various times

and locations in the area where guardrail repairs are being made.

I-459 – on the outside shoulders and median in the northbound and southbound directions from

the I-59 interchange (MP 0.0) in Bessemer to the I-59 interchange (MP 33.3) in Trussville.

This work may require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes at various times

and locations in the area where guardrail repairs are being made.

Upon completion of all guardrail repairs on the outside (right) shoulders, the repairs will move to the

inside (left) median shoulders in both the northbound/eastbound and southbound/westbound directions,

which will require the inside (left) travel lane and shoulder to be closed in areas where the guardrail

repairs are being made.

This work may require intermittent lane closures for up to eight weeks.

BIRMINGHAM – Weather permitting, on Tuesday, March 15 at 9 a.m., the Alabama Department of

Transportation will perform a bridge inspection on the US-280 eastbound bridge over the Cahaba

River at milepost 5.68, as follows:

This inspection will require the US-280 eastbound outside (right) lane and shoulder to be

closed in the area of the work.

All travel lanes will be reopened to traffic no later than 3 p.m.

Planned Lane Closures on I-65 NB and SB, Hoover/Vestavia Hills area For Striping and Raised Pavement Marker Replacement at Exit 252 (US 31)

HOOVER/VESTAVIA HILLS – On Tuesday, March 15, weather conditions permitting,

between 8 p.m. and 5 a.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation will replace the existing

stripe and raised pavement markers on I-65 northbound and southbound, as follows:

I-65 southbound ramp at Exit 252 (US 31) will have lane closures where work is being

performed to provide adequate space for equipment and personnel to safely replace the

striping and markers.

I-65 northbound and southbound outside (right) and middle lanes will be closed at

separate and various times to allow workers to replace the raised pavement markers from

Exit 252 (US 31) to Exit 254 (Alford Avenue).

All ramp lanes will be reopened to traffic by approximately 5 a.m. Wednesday March 16.

Motorists are requested to consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe

work zone speed limits and other work zone signs, and use extreme caution in this area. ALDOT

Department of Transportation will begin emergency bridge repairs at the following locations:

I-65 northbound at the bridge over University Blvd. - remove the temporary concrete

barrier rail. This will require the outside (right) lane to be closed in the area the work is

being performed.

I-65 southbound from the bridge over 6th Ave. South to just south of the bridge over 8th

St. South - relocate the temporary concrete barrier rail from the bridge over University

Blvd. to the bridge over 8th St. South. This work will require the outside (right) lane to be

closed in the area the work is being performed.

I-59 (MP 130.0) in Birmingham to the St. Clair County Line in Leeds. This work may

require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes in the area where guardrail

repairs are being made.

I-22 – on the outside shoulders and median in the eastbound and westbound directions from

Coalburg Rd. (Exit 93) in Forestdale to the Walker County Line in West Jefferson. This

work may require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes in the area where

guardrail repairs are being made.

I-59 – on the outside shoulders and median in the northbound and southbound directions

from 1st Ave. North (US 11) in East Lake to the St. Clair County Line in Argo. This work

may require closure of the outside (right) and the inside (left) lanes in the area where

guardrail repairs are being made.

This work will be from Wednesday March 16 thru Friday March 18, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Upon completion of all guardrail repairs on the outside (right) shoulders, the repairs will move to

the inside (left) median shoulders in both the northbound/eastbound and southbound/westbound

directions, which will require the inside (left) travel lane and shoulder to be closed in areas where

the guardrail repairs are being made.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY Planned Lane Closure for Patching Operations on I-65 SB at MP 232.1, in Calera

CALERA – Weather permitting, Thursday, March 17, beginning at approximately 9:30 a.m. and

ending before 2:30 p.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation will be performing patching

operations in I-65 southbound at milepost 232.1, 0.9 miles north of the US-31 Interchange (Exit 231).

The work is planned to proceed as follows:

This work will begin with the closure of the I-65 southbound, outside (right) lane.

Once work is completed in this lane, the I-65 southbound, outside (right) lane will be reopened,

and then the I-65 southbound, inside (left) lane will be closed.

All travel lanes will be reopened to traffic no later than 2:30 p.m.

BIRMINGHAM – Work continues on Interstate 65 as part of the Alabama Department of

Transportation’s project to build an interchange to connect I-65 to I-22 in Jefferson County.

Weather permitting, Monday, March 21 thru Saturday, March 26 between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.

there will be intermediate delays on I-65 northbound and southbound. There will be multiple lane

closures and rolling roadblocks to slow I-65 traffic northbound and southbound from the Fultondale

Exit 265 to 33rd Avenue North (Exit 263) Traffic interruptions are needed to perform Asphalt

Milling and Paving.

This operation will require the use of multiple Alabama State Troopers. In the event of inclement

weather, Milling, Asphalt Paving and Traffic Switch will not take place.

Once completed, I-22 will be an interstate highway between Birmingham and Memphis, TN.

A reduced speed limit of 45 mph is in effect throughout the work zone. Motorists are requested to

consider using alternate routes, adjust arrival/departure times, observe work zone speed limits and

MEDIA RELEASE Work on the I-59/20 Central Business District Bridge (CBD) and Interchange Replacement Project Updates: Phase Two, and the letting schedule for Phase Three

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – On Wednesday, March 16th, Granite Construction and the Alabama

Department of Transportation (ALDOT) held a Pre-Construction Conference, to discuss the work

on Phase Two of the I-59/20 Central Business District (CBD) bridge project.

Phase Two involves work to improve the route interchange at I-65 and I-59/20, known locally as

Malfunction Junction. Granite Construction will build new ramps to 17th Street and 6th Avenue

North, as well as new ramps from 11th Avenue North to the Interstate. Access to and from

downtown will remain open during Phase Two, and all work on the new ramps will be completed

before existing access points are closed.

Construction will begin in Spring of the this year, and is expected to be completed Fall of 2018.

ALDOT will provide regular construction updates to the media and public use.

Other Phases

Work on Phase One is nearing completion. Phase One involves widening three bridges and raising

the elevation of two others along I-65. This work is necessary in order to prepare I-65 to properly

connect with the work that will be completed in Phases Two and Three. Motorists are asked to

remain vigilant of workers near the construction zone.

ALDOT plans to receive bids on Phase Three in August 2016. Phase Three involves the redesign of

the Interchange with I-59/20 and Red Mountain Expressway, as well as the demolition and

rebuilding of the CBD through downtown Birmingham.

Lane Closures Expected on I-65 South at I-59/20 Interchange Traffic will be constricted to one lane on I-65 South over two consecutive weekends

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Weather permitting, on Friday, April 8th at 7 p.m., the Alabama Department

of Transportation will close the left two southbound lanes on I-65 in order to finalize work associated

with the raising of the bridges over I-65 North. The lane closures are expected to continue through the

weekend, with normal traffic flow resuming early Monday morning, April 11th. During this time the

interchange ramp at I-59/20 South to I-65 South will also be closed until Saturday evening.

Work will continue the following weekend, April 15th requiring the closure of two southbound lanes

on I-65 and resulting in traffic being reduced to one lane. Weather permitting, this work is expected to

last approximately five days, with normal traffic conditions resuming the morning of Wednesday,

April 20th.

The scheduled work is part of Phase One of the I-59/20 CBD Bridge Replacement project. It will

involve contractors constructing permanent transitions following the raising of two bridges on I-65.

Phase One is currently on schedule, and expected to be completed by the end of June 2016.

Significant delays are expected. All motorists traveling southbound through Birmingham on I-65

during the two periods of construction are encouraged to adjust travel plans, or seek alternative routes

in order to avoid congestion at the points of construction. The recommended alternative route is US

Hwy. 31 by way of Fieldstown Road, Walker Chapel Road, or Finley Boulevard.
