Keenan Recognizes These Lion Leaders

Keenan Elementary is proud to announce the Keenan Teacher of the Year, Mrs. Jennifer Marshall. Jen is a stellar first grade teacher and team leader. Brooke Adamick says, “Jen is always willing to help a friend no matter what. She is helpful, positive, and caring. She is a master teacher and ensures her students are successful academically as well as growing into the best human they can be!”

Keenan is also thrilled to announce the Keenan Spirit of Montgomery, Mrs. Heather Norris. She does an amazing job providing for the needs of the campus as the campus secretary. Mrs. Brewer says, “Heather is a true joy to know. It only takes a few minutes to be around her to feel like you have been friends for years. She is the epitome of what "Spirit of Montgomery" should be.”

Congratulations to Lincoln's first ever Teacher of the Year and Spirit of Montgomery winners!!! A very well deserved honor!

Oak Hills eighth grader, Shelby Winn, recently participated in her fifth Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo. Over this last year, Shelby has worked many hours every day to care for and prepare her prized steer, Yancy, for the Livestock Show. Shelby's hard work and dedication earned her 3rd place in the middle weight Brahman Class and $7,000 at the auction!

Shelby has been involved in the Montgomery 4H program for the last five years. Shelby says that participating in 4H and raising livestock has taught her how to set goals and achieve them. She’s learned important leadership skills, and that hard work really pays off. She truly loves the process of raising animals and the reward of showing them off at the livestock shows. Next on the schedule for Shelby is the Austin Livestock Show where she will show another Brahman steer named Silver Bullet. Way to go Shelby! Your Lion Family is very proud of you.

Going on a Treasure Hunt!

When first graders use their phonetic skills in reading, they’ll never forget the fun they had learning about the “ar” sound. A pirate-themed week included books about pirates, map skills, a classroom game of walking the plank and, of course, a dress-up day! These little leaders dressed up as pirates and went on a treasure hunt for any place they could find where “X” marked the spot on the playground. They found the word “shark” on the swings and the words “park” and “card” on the slides. These students are the real treasures and we love watching them sail into reading!

UPDATE: Another win in Austin this week with Silver Bullet!

Mrs. Dooley got to celebrate her new title as Teacher of the Year by traveling with her Destination Imagination Team “When Pigs Fly” to Corpus Christi to compete in the State DI Competition. Along with their DI Coach Mrs. Dooley, these fourth and fifth graders worked hard to compete against other regional winners. They had an awesome time competing and participating in the state events. These students look forward to competing in future DI competitions. Great job to SCE’s DI Team “When Pigs Fly” and thank you to Mrs. Dooley for giving these students an opportunity to participate in such an exciting event.

SCE had a lot to celebrate this past week. Two wonderful educators were nominated for a great honor. Mrs. Dooley, a fourth grade teacher at SCE, was nominated as Teacher of The year while Mrs. Cohen, who works as an interventionist, was nominated as Spirit of Montgomery. Congratulations to both of these ladies for working so hard with SCE students every day. We appreciate all that you do!

Last week, several of Madeley Ranch students along with Mrs. Ashley Berryman attended a school board meeting to show them all the innovative and exciting projects and activities they have been working on this year in technology class.

In addition to the typical technology assignments, such as practicing typing, creating documents and slideshows, the students spoke to the board about using virtual reality and green screens to travel all over the world and learn about history and geography in class.

They were so excited as they explained how they are able to virtually travel to the Great Wall, Hawaii, New York, and even Disney World! The students were so charming and articulate and did an amazing job. It took a lot of courage for them to speak in front of a room full of adults and we couldn't be more proud of them or Mrs. Berryman!

Our little and big bearcats are learning all about INDIVIDUALITY for the month of March. Mrs. Lowe read the book, I'm NOT Just A Scribble to K-2nd classes, and they discussed the importance of being their own individual, unique, and special self; they also created their own scribble character. Our 3rd-5th grade classes are also reading the book, The Best Part of Me and discussing what they love most about themselves. We know we have to love ourselves first before we can love others. March is a good month at MES because we are teaching our bearcats to be their BODACIOUSLLY awesome little selves.

Five senior athletes signed letters of intent to play their sports in college on March 21.

Madison Denega will play volleyball for LeTourneau University in Longview, TX

Lexie Tschumperlin will play volleyball for Eastfeild College in Mesquite, TX

Sarah Trotter will play soccer for University of Alabama- Huntsville

Alec Wright will run cross-country for Oklahoma State University.

Luke Watkins will run cross-country for Southern Arkansas University.

Our 1st graders enjoyed the sunshine while working on some beautiful art for our school. Art rocks with Mrs. Petty at MES.

We enjoy celebrating good character at MES, and we continue to do that monthly with our Bodacious Bearcat Awards. Each month a student is chosen from their class to represent as the Bodacious Bearcat. A Bodacious Bearcat shows P-R-I-D-E in all they do. On a daily basis, they are choosing to have PURPOSE, RESPECT, INTEGRITY, DETERMINATION, and EXCELLENCE. Our Bodacious Bearcats are treated to a McDonald's breakfast, medal, and certificate. We are so proud of our Bodacious Bearcats, and we can't wait to see who receives the award for March, April, and May.

Kindergarten, first and second grade have enjoyed reading The Good Egg by Jory John and Pete Oswald this week. This follow-up to The Bad Seed is sure to make any age group laugh out loud and walk away knowing it's okay to not always be perfect.

Eighth graders at OHJH learned about databases in the library this week.  The librarian and the eighth grade language arts teachers collaborated to teach students the importance of using databases and how to use them.   The students will begin writing their persuasive essays next week using the databases for their research.

On the back of Deep Water by Watt Key, the summary states, “After her father falls ill miles off the coast of Alabama, twelve-year-old Julie Sims must take over and lead two of his clients on a dive while her father stays behind in the boat.  When the clients, a reckless boy around Julie’s age and his equally foolhardy father, disregard Julie’s instructions during the dive, she quickly realizes she’s in over her head.  But she has no idea what kind of disaster awaits once she surfaces.”
