Cat® C6.6 Engine with ACERT™Technology. The Cat® C6.6 is a6.6 liters (403 in3) displacement,six cylinder, inline configured engineequipped with a Caterpillar CommonRail fuel System. It uses ACERTTechnology, a series of Caterpillarengineered innovations that provideadvanced electronic control, precisionfuel delivery and refined air management,resulting in outstanding performanceand lower emissions. The Cat C6.6 withACERT Technology meets the U.S. EPATier 3, European Union Stage IIIA andJapan MOC Step 3 emissions standards.

Design. The C6.6 features a compactdesign with heavy-duty engine featuresfor outstanding durability, reliabilityand performance. The C6.6 incorporatesa new cross flow cylinder head design,a 4 valve head and an ADEM A4electronic controller.

Electronic Controls. The C6.6 enginesuse advanced electronic controllers,which have a proven track record forperformance and reliability. ADEM A4Electronic Control Module (ECM)receives data from engine-mountedsensors and adjusts critical parametersto maintain optimum performance.These adjustments also optimize fueleconomy and emissions compliance.Electronics also make engines easierto troubleshoot and repair.

Fuel Delivery. Fuel is introduced inthe combustion chamber in a numberof precisely controlled microbursts.Injecting fuel in this way allows forprecise shaping of the combustionprocess. The ADEM™ A4 moduledirects the injectors to deliver precisequantities of fuel at exactly the righttimes during combustion for optimumefficiency and performance.

Air Management. The C6.6 uses aturbocharger fitted with a smart wastegate to give precise control of the boostpressure. Over the entire engine operatingranges the result is improved: Throttleresponse, Lower fuel Consumption andoptimized engine performance. A newcross-flow design in the cylinder headfacilitates air movement, while tightertolerances between the piston andcylinder liner are reducing blow by gases.

Turbocharged and Aftercooled. A well-matched turbocharger and air-to-airaftercooler results in higher power whilekeeping rpm steady and exhausttemperatures low.

Torque Rise. The direct injectionelectronic fuel system provides acontrolled fuel delivery increase asthe engine lugs back from rated speed.This results in increased horsepowerbelow rated power. A combinationof increased torque rise and maximumhorsepower improves response,provides greater drawbar pull andfaster dozing cycles.

Cooling System. The cooling system isa single coolant unit including hydraulicoil cooler, radiator, ATAAC and faninstallation. Aluminum cores andhydraulically driven demand fan provideoptimum cooling and fuel efficiency.

Electric Fuel Priming Pump. A standardelectric fuel priming pump is located inthe primary fuel filter base above thecombined water separator/primary fuelfilter. A switch enables to easily primethe fuel system after a fuel filter service.

Main Frame. The D6K one-piece mainframe is designed to absorb highimpact shock loads and twisting forces.Robotic welding provides deeppenetration and consistency, ensuringhigh quality, durability and reliabilitythroughout the structure.

Track Roller Frame. Track roller framesfeature an engineered box-sectiondesign, which provides superiorstrength and resistance to bending.

Equalizer bars are pinned in theircenter to the machine main frame andat the ends to each track roller frame.This allows the forward ends of the trackroller frames to oscillate to keep moretrack on the ground in uneven underfootconditions while providing maximumtraction and operator comfort.

Heavy Duty Components. Heavy dutyradiator grill, bottom guards and fueltank guard are available, for additionalprotection in severe applications.

Hydrostatic Drive. The electronicallycontrolled hydrostatic drive systemautomatically maintains engine speedto match the power requirements ofthe application for peak performance.The hydrostatic drive train also offersindependent power and control of eachtrack, for fast acceleration, infinitelyvariable speed control and on-the-go,direction changes. The operator cancommand smooth “power turns” oreven counter-rotation of the tracks forprecise steering control in tight areas.The Caterpillar hydrostatic drive systemmanages itself, freeing the operator toconcentrate on using the Caterpillartrack-type tractor’s superb agility, speed,and maneuverability to do moreproductive work.

Infinitely Variable Speed Control.Hydrostatic drive provides infinitespeed selection from 0 to 10 km/h(0 to 6.2 mph) in forward and reverse.This lets the operator select the optimumspeed for ground and job conditions.It also eliminates power interruptionduring shifting.

Ground Speed Balancing. Hydrostaticdrive provides a completely “step-less”transmission of power and automaticallymatches travel speed and implementloads for increased efficiency and easieroperation.

High Power Utilization. The hydrostaticdrive system on the D6K is designedto use full available engine powerthroughout the machine working cycle.If the implement hydraulic system is notin use, this engine power can bedelivered to the drive train, providinghigh drawbar pull and fast travel speeds.If the implement hydraulics are beingworked hard, the machine control ECMwill automatically slow the tracks asnecessary to use the full remainingengine power, without overloadingand stalling the engine. As soon as theimplement hydraulic load is decreased,the machine control ECM willautomatically speed up the tracks untilthe machine is traveling at the speedthe operator has commanded with theHystat Control (left).

Unsurpassed Maneuverability.Power turn and counter-rotation capabilityimprove machine maneuverability andproductivity. On the D6K, power turnsare accomplished by slowing the speedof one track versus the other, whilemaintaining power to both tracks.

The Cat Hystat power turn feature alsoenables the D6K to handle large loadsaround corners or through hard spotsencountered when dozing. Power turncapability improves machine mobilityin soft underfoot conditions and isvery effective for controlling machineoperation on side slopes. Counter-rotationalso provides easy, quick maneuveringin tight areas or congested job sites.

Operator Station. The operator stationfeatures an ergonomic layout emphasizingsimplicity, ease of use and comfort.Standard air conditioning, generous legroom and superior visibility allow theoperator to focus on the job. With moreglass area, the operator station providesa clear view to the blade and thesurrounding work site.

Air suspended seat. The CaterpillarC500 Comfort air suspended seat isavailable in cloth or vinyl and is fullyadjustable, for maximum operatorcomfort. A standard lumbar adjustmentprovides excellent lower back support.For comfortable operation in coldweather, a heated cloth seat is available.

Seat-mounted controls. For optimumcomfort and precise control, the D6Kfeatures ergonomically designedseat-mounted controls. Seat-mountedcontrols isolate vibrations from theoperator, and provide independent seatand controls adjustment. Individualwrist pads and armrests can be adjustedindependently for optimum comfort.

Electro-hydraulic controls. New electro-hydraulic controls provide quicksteering response, precise blade control,and comfortable, low-effort operation.

Instrument Cluster. The compactinstrument cluster (shown with optionalAccuGrade GPS display) keeps theoperator aware of all vital machinefunctions. The advanced monitoringsystem tracks machine operatingconditions and informs the operatorof impending problems. The monitoringsystem includes:

• Alert indicators: action lamp(3 warning categories), electricalsystem

• Indicators: parking brake, engine oilpressure, engine air filter, hydraulicoil filter, electrical preheat, operatorpresence, blade float, machinesecurity system, fuel system service,implement lockout

• Gauges: hydraulic oil temperature,engine coolant temperature, fuel level

• Digital display: service hours,selected forward and reverse speeds

Messenger. Messenger is an electronicmonitoring system with real-time,visual feedback on engine and machineoperating conditions. It providesinformation on machine performance,fuel consumption, diagnostics, andallows the operator to set someparameters, such as implement andsteering modulation.

Brake and Decel pedal. The D6K featuresa single, combined hystat brake anddecel pedal. Two braking configurationsare available through this pedal:

• Transmission braking only: As thepedal is pressed, the machine willslow by braking the transmission;no engine decel will occur.

• Transmission braking and enginedecel: As the pedal is pressed, themachine will slow by simultaneouslybraking the transmission and reducingthe engine speed.

When the pedal is depressed beyond thedetent, the service brakes will be applied.

Bulldozer Control. The blade iscontrolled with an ergonomicallydesigned joystick located to the right ofthe operator. This joystick includes athumb wheel that controls blade angle.AccuGrade buttons are convenientlylocated on the joystick for quick,efficient actuation. For non-AccuGradeequipped machines, a blade shakebutton provides aggressive blademovement for effective removal ofsticky material.

Speed and Direction Control.The operator controls the speed of themachine and the direction of travel witha single joystick control located on theleft console. This joystick includes athumb wheel for precise speed control,as well as a convenient button to storeand recall operator-defined, independentoperating speeds for forward and reverse.

Work Tool Controls. The D6K can beequipped with either a ripper or awinch. For maximum flexibility, theD6K can be configured for rippercontrol, winch control, or a selectableripper or winch control.

Other cab features. For optimumoperator comfort, the D6K operatorstation includes the followingamenities:

• Foot rests for slope work

• Air filter

• Two 12-volt power points

• Storage compartment

• Cup holder

• Dome light

• Rearview mirror

• Coat hook

• Radio ready factory installedcomponents

SystemOne™ Undercarriage.Exclusively for Caterpillar machines thedesign extends system life and reducesoperating costs.

• Long-life Sprocket. Extended lifesprockets will outlast two or moretracks. The rotating bushingtechnology extends life.

• Guiding System. The guidingsystem contacts link rails insteadof pin ends and helps keep the trackwithin the roller system. The resultis improved track guiding.

• Rollers. The increased flangediameter on the rollers provideoptimum guiding and longer life.

• Carrier Rollers. Redesigned carrierrollers are factory sealed and servicedas a unit. The larger diameter providesextended wear to better matchundercarriage system life.

• Idlers. The center tread idlerscontact only the bushing – not thelinks – eliminating scalloping andproviding more guiding to the linkassembly. The idlers last longerbecause they contact a rotatingbushing instead of a link rail.

• Cartridge Joints. Factory-sealedcartridge joints are laser welded tocontrol end play. They offer improvedseal integrity through an innovativenew sealing system and do notdepend on the link interface toremain sealed. As with all Catundercarriage products, they arefilled with special oils.

• May be used in any application.

• The track roller frames are weldedand have a box section design,which provides strength andresistance to bending withoutadding extra weight.

• The track adjuster and mechanicalrecoil spring and grease filledadjustment cylinder which allowsthe idler to move forward and backto maintain proper track tension asit absorbs undercarriage shock.

Undercarriage Arrangements.XL (Extra Long) arrangement

• Forward idler position providesmore track on the ground and tothe front of the tractor. It providesoptimal balance, superior tractionand blade control for finish grading.

• Long roller frame provides goodflotation in soft underfoot conditions.

LGP (Low Ground Pressure)arrangement

• Specially designed to work in softunderfoot conditions.

• Wide track shoes, a longer trackframe and a wider gauge increasetrack contact area and reduce groundpressure for excellent flotation.

Complete Guarding. Caterpillarundercarriages are designed with fulllength guarding on top of the trackroller frame. This prevents abrasivematerials from being recirculated inthe track.

Roller Frames. Roller frames attach tothe tractor by a pivot shaft and pinnedequalizer bar.

Oscillating Undercarriage. The pinnedequalizer bar is saddle-mountedbeneath the mainframe, allowing theroller frames and track to oscillate.The oscillation provides a steadyworking platform and smooth ridefor the operator.

AccuGrade Laser. AccuGrade Laserdesigned for precise grade control usinga laser transmitter and receiver.

A laser transmitter is set up on thework site and creates a constant gradereference over the work area. A digitallaser receiver is mounted on the machineand captures the laser signal as themachine moves across the work site.

The system captures information andcalculates the blade adjustmentsnecessary to achieve grade. The systemmakes automatic elevation adjustmentstypically performed by the operatorand provides automatic blade control.The operator simply steers the machine.The system also calculates cut/fillrequirements for manual blade control.

AccuGrade GPS. AccuGrade GPScomputes the positioning informationon the machine, compares the positionof the blade relative to the design planand delivers that information to theoperator via an in-cab display.

Information, such as blade elevation,necessary cut/fill to achieve grade,visual indication of the blade’s positionon the design surface and a graphicalview of the design plan with machinelocation.

AccuGrade GPS puts all the informationthe operator needs to complete the jobin the cab, resulting in a greater level ofcontrol. Vertical and horizontal guidancetools visually guide the operator to thedesired grade.

Automated features allow the hydraulicsystem to automatically control bladeadjustments to move the blade to grade.The operator simply uses the light barsto guide the machine for consistent,accurate grades and slopes, resultingin higher productivity with less fatigue.

Easy diagnostics. The CompactInstrument Cluster allows for quickidentification of problems and its cause,utilizing a three level warning system.This monitoring system can easily beupgraded by flashing software.

Engine compartment. All the regularengine maintenance is made througha large, hinged door located on the leftside of the machine. This compartmentgives access to the engine fuel filtersand water separator, the engine oilfilter, the engine oil dipstick and filler,the electric fuel priming pump, and theengine air pre-cleaner and filters.

Cooling package. Cores and fan areaccessible from ground level, for easycleaning and maintenance. Opening theradiator front grid will allow full accessto the engine fan. The fan is mountedon a swing-out door that will provideaccess to the cores. The other side of thecores is accessible through the enginecompartment.

Grouped pressure taps. Pressure tapsallow for quick measure andtroubleshooting of the hydraulic system.These pressure taps are all located inthe left service access door, and areaccessible from ground level.

Ecology Drains. Ecology drains providean environmentally safer method todrain fluids. They are included on theradiator (coolant) and the hydraulictank, and for the engine oil change.

Product Link. This system streamlinesdiagnostic efforts, downtime andmaintenance scheduling and costs byproviding communication flow of vitalmachine data and location informationbetween the dealer and the customer.Product Link provides updates onservice meter hours, machine conditionand machine location.

Cat Machine Security System (MSS).MSS uses electronically coded keysselected by the customer to limit usageby individuals or time parameters.MSS deters theft, vandalism andunauthorized usage. Each machinesystem can store up to 255 keys andeach key can be used on as manymachines as desired. MSS can becontrolled by a Personal Data Assistant.Field installation is available.

Variable Pitch Power Angle and TiltBlade (VPAT). The VPAT blade isspecifically designed for finish grading,backfilling ditches, cutting V ditches,windrowing, fill spreading, mediumland clearing and heavy dozing.The VPAT blade gives the operatorthe ability to hydraulically adjust theblade lift, angle and tilt from theoperator station.

VPAT Positions. For optimumperformance, pitch is manuallyadjustable:

• 55° – maximum blade loads and bestfinish grading

• 57° and 59.5° – good blade loadsand general dozing

• 61° – maximum blade penetration andreduced material retention on blade

Foldable Blade. In order to comply withtransportation regulations, a foldableblade is offered on the XL configuration.Without blade removal, the machinewill be within the 2.55 meter (8.5 ft)width requirement.

C-Frame.

• C-Frame is solidly pinned to themainframe for good blade controland eliminates blade motion dueto track oscillation or side forces.

• C-Frame to tractor joint is sealedand lubricated with remote linesfor extended service life and quietoperation.

• Large C-Frame tower bearingsimprove durability.

• Lubrication points are located atall pin joints to reduce wear.

Parallelogram Ripper. The multi-shankparallelogram ripper lets you chooseone, two or three shanks depending onjob conditions. Curved or straight shanksare available. High strength mainframeallows having stiffer ripper mountingblocks for severe drawbar applications.

Drawbar. The D6K is equipped with adrawbar for pulling work tools such as:

• Disks

• Compactors

• Chopper wheels

• Retrieval of other equipment

Hydrostatic Winch. PA50 winchis driven by its own closed-loophydrostatic system consisting of avariable displacement hydraulic pistonpump and motor. This winch offersoutstanding control of the load withinfinitely variable modulation of speedand pull, and lowers operator effort.

Sweeps and Screens. Optional sweepsand screens are available. Sweeps helpto shield critical components on thetractor such as hydraulic lines, exhauststacks, cab windows and lights fromdamage.
