new ways of undertanding the DNA are being discovered in this new century.

Diseases such as cancer, have a very close relation with DNA replication.

This presentation shall ilustrate some of the ways in which the comprehension of DNA machinery is helping modern medicine

Introduction

Researchers discovered that in samples taken form patients that had “virus negative” genital warts in fact had DNA of HPV.

They discovered that many genital warts are produced by unknown types of this virus

They did this by stracting samples of DNA from the patient

They did a DNA sequencing with the samples and then analyzed it

DNA analyzed from the samples proved that there were at least 22 new types of the virus.

It proved that many diagnosis where wrong

In my opinion many types of virus can be discovered by using this method because DNA has a precise sequence for each type of virus. So this can be replicated in many other kinds of virus and in future it could help in diagnosis

Is based on the discover of a new function of an enzyme : NEIL 1

“Cowcatcher” Enzyme Fixes Single-Strand DNA

NEIL 1 its located ahead of the replication process

It marks the DNA if there is an error on the secuence

After marking the wrong DNA NEIL 1 stops the replication process

Then reparation machinery fixes the error in the strand that its marked and the process its rewind

1) Prevent mutations.2) Prevent replication

errors to replicate and persist in time.

The DNA sequencing method can be applied on many types of virus, not only in HPV, so it can realy help to do a better diagnosis

Medical utility

DNA sequencing method allows to discover new types of viruses, so in that way it allows to expand our knowledge about viruses, so new treatments can be develop.

Modulating the activity of NEIL 1 could be very usefull because to treat some diseases that are based on mitotic activity such as cancer.

Many genetic disorders could be prevented if we can improve the eficiency of NEIL 1, because if it can prevent a mutation to survive then many genetic diseases can be stopped.
