We at the Food Pantry wish you could have seen the kindness and generosity of the hundreds of people who donated food and money this past holiday season. Local companies and community groups organized both big and small food drives. Several local Scout groups went ‘Caroling for Cans.’ Funds donated are used to purchase items from the Greater Chicago Food Depository as well as locally for perishables and other necessities. Many families that are new to our Food Pantry marveled at the bounty on our shelves which is due to all of our amazing donors. Our Food Pantry would not be possible without the dedication, hard work, and kindness of the volunteers who assist our hundreds of families each and every month. In addition to working individually with every client, they unload orders, check expiration dates, and stock thousands of pounds of food week after week. We are fortunate to have more than enough volunteers who give their time. Most importantly, we wish you could experience the gratitude of our clients when they leave with a cart filled with groceries and necessities for their home. Thank you all for your kindness, time, effort, and generosity! If you are struggling to provide meals for yourself and or your family, please call 847-358-6110 to make an appointment to sign up for the Food Pantry. It serves anyone in need living within Township boundaries. If you’d like to make a donation or organize a Food Drive, please see the Township website for more information.

COYOTES IN OUR COMMUNITY Trustee Bill Pohlman

There has been a great deal of discussion on coyotes and what to do about them. Let me start by saying that coyotes are here to stay and we have to learn how to deal with them. There are no effective ways to eliminate coyotes. When trappers or sharpshooters are employed and if they are successful in reducing the coyote population, coyotes will start breeding at a younger age and have larger litters allowing their population to bounce back quickly. If we eradicate the coyote population from our area, another pack will move in and replace them.We can learn from the mistakes that other areas of the country have made in dealing with coyotes. If we employ a combination of education and hazing, we will significantly reduce the number of nuisance coyotes and maintain a peaceful coexistence.Coyotes become a problem when they lose their fear of people. Don’t attract coyotes to your home by leaving pet food outside, composting meat or fish, leaving out garbage or having a bird feeder. Birdfeeders attract squirrels and rodents which are a preferred food of coyotes.Never run from a coyote. Hazing coyotes by yelling at them, standing tall and waving your arms will drive most coyotes away. If the coyote does not run, they have lost their fear of humans, are considered a nuisance coyote and should be reported to the authorities.Coyotes benefit the environment by keeping rodent and geese populations in check as two of their preferred foods are rodents and eggs from goose nests. Cats and small dogs are at risk of attack. Coyotes breed January through March and will attack larger dogs to protect their territory. Attacks during the rest of the year are most likely caused by coyotes that have lost their fear of humans.

ADOPT-A-SAILOR THANKSGIVING PHOTO CARDS

Clerk Lisa Moran

Thanksgiving Day, 2017 was a very special day for the 38 Great Lakes Naval recruits who enjoyed a fabulous Thanksgiving meal and entertainment hosted by the Palatine American Legion Post 690. Palatine Township chose to collaborate on this wonderful event by offering to create photo cards for the recruits. Clerk Lisa Moran and Outreach Coordinator Lori Lindberg, as well as their families, spent the afternoon taking pictures of the recruits. Those pictures, along with a personal message from the recruit, were mailed to their loved ones. Some pictures of the event are included in this newsletter.

TEXT ALERTS FROM THE ASSESSOR’S OFFICE Assessor Terry Kelly, CIAO

THANK YOU TO PARADE DONORS Trustee Andy-John G. Kalkounos

As a newly elected trustee, it was an honor to participate in last year’s Hometown Fest 4th of July Parade. The 2017 parade was record-breaking in terms of contributions to the Needy Family Fund; together, we raised $1,432.55.

I would like to take a moment to share my experience while walking the parade route. Three individuals stopped me to contribute and shared similar inspirational stories along the path. They expressed sincere gratitude to the Township for helping their families in need. They deeply appreciated what our volunteers and incredible staff did for them. One told me how it gave her a chance to get back on her feet and focus on regaining employment. After receiving the help they needed from their township, these people were in a much better position and were happy to share their positive experience

with me! I asked them to stay in contact and share their success with others who might also need a helping hand.

One recipient already signed up as a volunteer because in her words, “ I gotta give back now!” This gave me pause and truly put the impact of the event into perspective.

Thank you to the staff and volunteers who not only helped bring dignity to families struggling but did so with a warm smile and generous heart.

More information about the Palatine Township Food Pantry, including location, hours, and how to donate, can be found at our website, PalatineTownship-il.gov.

Palatine Township Transportation will soon be moving to the use of a computerized, web based dispatch software called EcoLane, and we are very excited about it. Here are a few highlights of how it will help us do more, take control, and achieve more.

• Quick passenger and reservation data; enabling same day scheduling.

• Increased productivity through real time, dynamic schedules.

• Improved efficiency by optimizing the drivers’ time and Township resources (fuel, equipment, etc.).

We are happy to share the good news as we continue to provide safe, reliable, and high quality transportation service to Palatine Township residents and clients.

Tires are a staple of modern society; however, it has become one of our largest solid waste headaches. This nuisance extends particularly to our roadside ditches. Violators “fly dump” their unwanted tires, creating breeding grounds for mosquitoes, flooding and maintenance concerns for the Road District, not to mention an unsightly landscape. In response, we created a tire amnesty program several years ago and it has become a well-attended and anticipated event. Early each spring, on selected Saturdays, anyone living in Palatine Township can drop off their used tires at our yard. If you are a resident of Palatine Township, stop by and drop off your old tires at the Road District Garage, located at 530 N. Smith Street, Palatine. Centered around Earth Day, the Tire Amnesty Program will be held from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on Saturday April 21, 2018 and Saturday April 28, 2018. No tires over 16” in diameter or from commercial vendors will be accepted.

We will begin our annual yard waste collection for the unincorporated areas on April 2, 2018 and will continue until November 20, 2018. In late March, and weather permitting, we will deliver 56 yard waste stickers to each household in the unincorporated areas. Incorporated residents will need to check their Village’s or City’s vendor for their individual service dates. These stickers are to be used on your purchased yard waste bags for the following items: grass clippings, leaves and garden debris; however, dirt or sod is not prohibited. Please do not put more than 40 pounds of material into the bags as they become too heavy to lift into our refuse truck. If you have small brush or branches, please tie them with twine in bundles 4 ft. or less in length and 2 ft. or less in diameter. By doing so, they will be more manageable for disposal. Additionally, for your gardening use, we have free compost which was last year’s yard waste and is offered for pick-up only at the Road District Garage and Town Hall. Please call for availability, as this material is quickly consumed.

YARD WASTE PROGRAM AND COMPOST AVAILABILITY

WATER QUALITYUrban runoff is threatening our freshwater and public awareness needs to be heightened. Urban runoff pollution comes from neighborhood streets, ditches, storm sewers, construction sites, and parking lots. This runoff contains pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers from landscaped lawns and gardens, improper disposal of used oil and engine fluids into open lid manholes, and soil erosion from construction sites.

Your support as residents of the community is essential to improve our water quality. Proper maintenance, responsible use of fertilizers, and correct waste disposal are just a few solutions to keep our creeks and streams clean. We must to do our part together to improve the water quality of our creeks and streams so we may continue living in a healthy ecosystem. Our local ecosystem is the Salt Creek Tributary, which starts mostly in Palatine Township and covers approximately 150 square miles. This watershed eventually makes its way into the Des Plaines River, then into the Illinois River, and eventually to the Mississippi River.

LETTER FROM THE SUPERVISOR“Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”

– Seneca

Every year, many grow melancholy at the end of one year and the beginning of another. Some think of things never accomplished and the overwhelming list of things needing attention this year. Being the eternal optimist, I find the good sides to each.

2017 brought us new volunteers, ideas, our ability to help those in need more efficiently. A portion of our roof was replaced with a newer and more energy efficient foam product, a new phone system installed allowing for enhanced communication with staff and board members, and increased training for all staff aiding in serving you better.

In 2018, our new .GOV website is up, senior and disabled transportation has become more efficient due to new programming, and we are working towards new programs to aid our most vulnerable. Constituents should be delighted the overall Town and General Assistance levy was lowered from the previous year. Township is roughly 2% of your tax bill so you may not notice the reduction, even so, you have the awareness we are keeping budgets within reason.

Illinois legislature is back in session, filing and passing bills, which will affect all of us, including a few “anti-Township.” Many of our local legislators lack understanding of all the services Townships provide. Some legislators have not personally had difficulty feeding their children, keeping the heat on, or needed daily transportation for a loved one or themselves, being a senior or disabled. Township transportation allows residents to attend dialysis treatments, school or the grocery store. Resident’s use of the Assessors free property tax appeal service has increased over the years, as one cannot afford to pay an attorney each time. Keep an eye out for bills which eliminate your services and how your State Representative or Senator votes.

As always, feel free to contact me with anything.
