Transcript of Townie 2013 #4
As the seasons change and you’re thinking about pulling out your spring/summer wardrobe that you never really put
away, don’t forget to evaluate your skin care routine. As the largest organ and your most important protection against the
elements, our skin needs pampering and maintenance that isn’t always glamorous.
Of course, the very first thing you should consider when evaluating your skin care routine is sunblock. I am a huge
proponent of it, and you can see it onmy face! I started using a daily sunscreen at age 18 and it shows. Now don’t be stingy
- use it on your neck and the tops of your ears, if you have short hair!
I have used drug store products, department store products and boutique products, and have had good results from
different lines. I like to change things up every year or so, because new research comes
out and… the needs of your skin change! One of my favorite drug store products is
NeutrogenaHealthy Skin Anti-Wrinkle Creamwith SPF 15. It contains Retinal and
other vitamins and I use it as a daily moisturizer.
My favorite cleansers tend to be boutique products, and I’ve used brands fromMerle
Norman to Murad. Susan at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery Center invited me over for a
facial and consultation and it was a great experience. Not only did she quickly and
correctly identify my needs, she gave me lots of samples to try. They are very patient-
focused, and you can readmore about my experience at www.thomasvilletownie.com.
It’s always good to get a professional opinion about your skin, especially if you have
freckles or moles. A dermatologist can save your life, so don't be shy about asking
them to look. Better safe than sorry—and better early than late.
Be good to your skin, you will have it for the rest of your life!

This year I made a new year’s resolution. I resolved to get rid of the drama in my life, and make new friends. Easy enough, you say? Well sister, it is...
Voice in my head: “Oh please. Stop already with the dramatics. How hard can it be? I am not a drama queen!”
Well, let me begin by saying this: we live in a very, very small town. Your business is my business, his business and their
business. You can’t sneeze without soooomebody knowing it. But, I have finally figured out that you CAN get off that
gossip train. You’ve just got to stop digging in the dirt. That’s right. Stop for a moment and think about your recent
conversations with friends. Are you guilty of spreading the news? Most of us ARE. It begins easy enough...a chit chat and a glass of bubbly. Next thing you know, you’ve got “the dirt”
on your neighbors, your friends, and your frenemies. Whatcha gonna do with that dirt? You going to soil somebody’s
name? Or are you going to wash that dirt off your hands and walk away with a clean conscience? Sometimes dirt is
really hard to get rid of...but here’s how. First, you start valuing your time. Second, your start evaluating your friendships.
Ask yourself, am I enjoying the time I spend with a certain person? Does that person make me feel good and enrich
my life? Do I feel empty after my time with them, or do I feel full of love? Or do I just feel dirty?
Modern social mediums are one way to find out who is doing what, where, when and with who. All nine hundred of your
“close” friends online. Texting has become the communication technique that we use the most. So I began thinking,
is my life so boring that I need to know what so-and-so is pissed off about this week? Do I need to text anything to
anyone besides “I love you?” Absolutely not.
So, here’s what I decided to do...I started cleaning house. Not the kind of domestic wizardry you are thinking of, but
rather a soul cleansing purge. I am getting rid of the relationships that involve drama that make me feel bad about
myself or are hurtful to others. I am getting rid of the empty feelings of hate that I have for certain people. I am just
letting them go...like a balloon. You just aren’t meant to be friends with everyone, not matter how hard you try. And once
you wash away the old, you will be surprised at how good the “new” feels.
I have lived in this town for only four years, but I really thought that I knew everybody. Happily, last week I learned that
there are lots and lots of great people I had not met...people that I am now calling “friend.” By just reaching out a
little bit I have made new friends who have interesting lives, full of love and happiness. I welcome them in to my
existing circle of kind, fun-loving and sincere friends that I do indeed cherish.
I also have found that happy people attract one another. Are you attracting the people who you enjoy being with? If not,
it’s time to cut the cord. You can do it in a nice way...start being reallllly busy with work. Or tell them you have taken up
knitting. Get off of Facebook and get out and live. Pick up the phone, take up a new hobby or take a road trip. Chill that
bubbly and take it across town to a new friend’s house. Wash down that drama and start living dirt-free. —Leslie

clean up: your fitness planDoes yourworkout have thewinter blues? Since starting yourNewYears Resolution to get in shape, you
may have noticed you’re reaching a plateau and aren’t seeing the results youwant. Here are some tips to
spice up your fitness routine and get ready for summer!
Addweights to your routine.Manywomen skip theweights because they believe theywill “bulk up” and
this is not true. Think of it this way-muscle tissue ismoremetabolically active than fat tissue. Themoremuscle you have, the
more calories you will burn throughout the day! Increasing your muscle mass revs up your metabolism.
Think quality, not quantity.Maximize your time and intensity level by introducing intervals to yourworkout. Research proves
that a 30minute interval training session burnsmore fat and calories than a 30minute endurance session. In addition, you can
do it anywhere- home, gym, and the outdoors. Add in body-weight exercises- pushups, mountain climbers, lunges- for a
combined cardio and strength training effect.
Try a Group Fitness class- exercise doesn’t have to be lonely and boring. Attending a class is fun! Plus, it gives you
accountability and community! Lacking motivation? Let a certified instructor give you the motivation you need to finish
the workout!
Re-evaluate your fitness goals. The New Year’s Resolution hype has died down, and it’s back to everyday life. What is
working for you? What isn’t? If walking on the treadmill for an hour at 5:30 AM isn’t your thing, then switch to a 30 minute
spin class after work. Choose obtainable goals and be realistic!
Consult a fitness professional. Personal trainers and fitness experts are full of new ideas, encouragement and guidance. They
can provide you with helpful tips and support to keep you motivated!—Rebekah G.

clean up :your morning routineDo you ever feel like a tortoise trying to make your way towork? The race is on, and Dr. Towns is here helping you getto the finish line.
Go to bed at a decent hour. I promise you Facebook and Net-flix will be there tomorrow. As adults, we don’t always likesetting curfews for ourselves. However, the better rested youare, themore energy youwill have the next day. And themoreenergy you have, the more tweets you will be able to post thenext day!
Try some exercise before your busy day starts. Run a mile ortwo around your neighborhood or even around your house. If this sounds boring, have your dog join you. Yoga is anotheractivity you can do in the morning. Your kids will be too tiredto laugh at all the awesome stretches you will be doing.
Don’t try to get thirty errands done before you have to go towork. Do not mind boggle yourself in the mornings—andsave yourself from needing to make a call to the auto doctor!Having a clear mind can keep you concentrated and accidentfree. Organize and prioritize your errands and spread themthroughout the week. The more stress you have at the start ofyour day, the less tolerant youmight be towards the end of theday. And who doesn’t love saving money from not having topay a deductible on your car?
Last but not least, start your day with a multivitamin. Vita-mins have a lot of nutritional value that will put more pep intoyour step each day. And if vitamins bore you, have no fear…they make gummy vitamins for adults!—Jon

How to Clean
Weird ThingsWell, not weird, but maybe things you don’t normally put onyour cleaning rotation. Namely: lampshades, the washingmachine, your iron and the dishwasher.
LAMP SHADESFor quick, monthly cleaning, dust shades with a soft brush ormicrofiber cloth. For washable shades, fill the bathtub withlukewarmwater and add small amount of liquid laundry soap.Dip shade, wiping from top to bottom with a clean rag. Rinseshade in clean, lukewarm water; blot with a towel. Drip dryor place shade in front of a fan.
WASHINGMACHINESDid you know that residue from laundry detergents andfabric softeners can cling to the inside of your washer?Baking Soda ScrubAdd 4 tablespoons baking soda to 4 cups warm water. Wipedown the inside surface of the washing machine, scrubbinglightly if needed. Run the washer through a rinse cycle - if yousee a powdery, white residue on the surface, rinse again.Vinegar RinseAdd 1/4 cup white distilled vinegar to 1 quart water. Wipedown the interior of the washer, scrubbing lightly if needed.Run the washer through a rinse cycle.
THE IRONBe sure your iron is cool before you begin!Waxy? Turn iron to highest setting and press onto newspaperuntil the residue disappears.
Oily?Use ammonia to break it down and wipe away.
Unidentified substance? Combine vinegar and baking sodaand scrub surface with soft cloth.
Build-up in the vents? Use a pipe cleaner or cotton swab toclean gently. Never use a knife or anything else that will scratchthe iron’s surface.
Gotta satisfy that inner neurotic and clean the inside?Mixonepartvinegar+onepartwater and add to reservoir.Allow iron to steamfor fourminutes. Cool and drain, then rinse and drain again.
DISHWASHERAfter a fresh wash, with or without dishes, empty the washerand remove racks. Check spray arms to be sure holes are open.Use a toothpick to loosen any clogs.Look for buildup + debris in or around the wastewater grateand remove. Clean with a baking soda paste. If you have afilter, remove. Disassemble the filter in your sink and cleanthoroughly with soapy water or a baking soda paste. Wipeouter seal with vinegar solution. Dissolve hard water stains byrunning a cycle empty, with white vinegar.

Favorite intangible about The Ville? Thomasville is worldlybut not wary—Everyone is welcome!
What are you reading right now? I just finished The GreatAmerican House by Gil Schafer and am starting Butterfly inthe Typewriter: The Tragic Life of John Kennedy Toole andthe Remarkable Story of A Confederacy of Dunces by CoryMacLauchlin.
Ice cream or cake? And what kind? I am a chocolate cakekind of girl (with coffee ice cream on the side)
The ultimate vacation? I would rent a house in London asa home base andmake lots of side trips to Bath, Edinburgh,Paris, Florence, etc. Family and dear friends are invited,of course!
If I could teach my children one character trait, it wouldbe... I would like for our boys are learn perseverance {they al-ready have kindness, thoughtfulness and humor down pat!}.
….And why only one “a” in Margret? I honestly don’t knowexactly why I only have one ‘a.’ One theory is that the aunt forwhom I was named removed her ‘a’ in a fit of post WWIIglamour and it appealed tomy parents. Another theory is thatmy parents wanted to give theirmiddle daughter a little edge.

how to wash your dog...STEP 1—Gather supplies...shampoo, towels, swimming mask andknee pads. Arrange all supplies by tub while dog is not looking.
STEP 2—Find dog. Best bets are under the bed, in the back of thepantry, behind the toilet or down the street running at a fast rate...
STEP 3—Wrassle dog into tub. May involve superhuman strength andoctopus-like arm maneuvers. Refrain from calling the dog names...theneighbors can hear you.
STEP 4—Set water temperature using teeth. (Hands are in death gripon dog’s body.) Feel sorry for dog tip toeing in cold water.
STEP 5—Wet dog with water using large plastic cup or a bucket.Either is a futile effort that you will regret. Consider calling plumber forhand held fixture installation, this week!
STEP 6—Apply shampoo by mistakenly squirting huge blobs of it onto dog with one hand. Careful, dog may shimmy out of way, allowingshampoo to run down the drain.
STEP 7—Lather dog with breakneck speed before he escapes.Quicklyalternate scrubbing with death grip hands. Stop only to wring out yourshirt from dog shaking soapy water all over you and the entire bath-room. Threaten dog with his life for moving a muscle.
STEP 8—Rinse dog with cup after cup of water, making sure to rinseoff his head. Prepare for violent head shaking and soaking of walls.
STEP 9—Unfurl towel and cover dog’s head and body, and begin togently dry off entire dog. Praise him, apologize profusely and givehim a smooch on the nose. Offer him a treat—and MEAN IT.
STEP 10—Cuddle dog in a second dry towel...the one you put in thedryer for him earlier. He’ll forgive you quicker. —Leslie
