Stay Safe This SummerSummer tends to be a favorite season for many people—school’s out, the weather’s great and the beach is beckoning. What could be better?

This is also a season we want everyone to be safe. The Town’s aquatics program enables new swimmers to gain basic skills to stay safe while in or near the water, and the more experienced swimmers to develop stronger strokes and greater confidence. Our swim instructors and lifeguards take safety very seriously by constantly monitoring activities in and around the pools, and through participating in water safety skills training every Friday to be ready and able to assist swimmers when needed.

At the Town’s various day camps, we make sure to conduct the high intensity outdoor activities in the morning when it’s cooler, provide for frequent water breaks, schedule water play days during periods of high heat, and rotate activities between outdoors and indoors and between sunny and shady areas. Campers are also encouraged to wear sun screen and drink plenty of water throughout the day.

Danville is a bike-friendly town, so you’ll see more bicyclists in the summer. If you’re the rider, remember to keep your bicycle in good condition, wear a helmet (a good idea no matter what your age), use bike lanes where designated, and follow all the rules of the road. If you’re driving a vehicle, watch your speed and take extra care around bicyclists so everyone can share the road safely.

The 4th of July is a highlight of the summer season with Independence Day celebrations and activities both large and small. Please remember that with the summer-dry brush and vegetation throughout the Danville area, it’s critical to keep careful watch over your barbeques either at home or in Town parks and to refrain from using any type of fireworks, which are prohibited in Contra Costa County.

We’re very proud that Danville was recently named a HeartSafe Community. This designation acknowledges the community’s efforts to prevent and treat victims of sudden cardiac arrest through training residents in CPR and placing AEDs (Automated External Defibrillators) in area facilities, including the public pools, middle school gymnasiums and community centers where the Town’s recreation programs are held.

Finally, I encourage you to consider signing up for a CERT—Community Emergency Response Training—class. Being trained in basic emergency response practices will enable you and your neighbors to care for yourselves for 5–7 days after a disaster, such as a major earthquake, while the Town’s emergency workers address major fire, roadway and other infrastructure safety issues. Check the back cover of this Activity Guide for more information on upcoming CERT classes.

Enjoy, and be safe, this summer!

PRESCHOOL AQuATICS PROGRAM (AGE 3–5 yEARS) The Preschool Aquatics Program consists of two levels. Children registered for Preschool Aquatics must be ready to learn without parent participation. The group lesson format includes eight 25-minute classes which are held Monday–Thursday for two weeks. When necessary, students may be asked to move to an earlier or later class time. If a class is full, please add your child to the waitlist in case we are able to accommodate more participants. 1:3 instructor to child ratio.

The Town of Danville is pleased to offer a water safety dock. Although we emphasize hanging on to the wall, this dock allows children to stand in the pool with a secure railing around them.

FREE SWIM LESSONS @ STAFF TRAINING (Age 3–15 years)

My daughter loved all the activities and made some new friends. It was a great activity for her to gain some independence and socialization before kindergarten. The counselors were great—very fun and enthusiastic! I especially liked that they were proactive in dealing with children who were having behavior problems. They spoke to the parents about the issues right away which helped everyone have a positive camp experience.

“Sophia took all four sessions of beginning swim. It was a wonderful experience for her. before we started, she had become afraid of putting her head under the water, something the year prior she had no problem doing. after the first session she was able to put her head under without a problem and by the end of summer she was jumping into the pool and swimming short distances to the teachers. We were very pleased with the experience.”

If you haven’t signed up for an emergency preparedness class, now’s the time! CERT provides education regarding disaster preparedness for hazards that may impact their area while training citizens in basic emergency response. You develop skills in areas such as: fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization, and disaster medical operations. The goal is to train you, your neighbors, school staff and co-workers on how to care for themselves, their families and colleagues for 5–7 days after a disaster.

All CERT courses are FREE and are held at the SRV Fire Offices at 1500 Bollinger Canyon Rd, San Ramon.
