INFORMATION YOU SHOULD KNOW

Welcome to Duck! While enjoying our beautiful, slow-paced coastal village, please be sure to review the following important information to ensure a fun-filled, safe, and relaxing visit.

OUR BEACHDuck is nationally-recognized as one of the “Top 15 Family-Friendly Beaches in America”. When visiting our beach, remember to be aware of the following:

• Remove all personal items daily, including tents and umbrellas, or they may be removed as litter.

• Attend to and refill all beach holes.• Place all beach items at least 15 feet away from the base of the

dune to allow for emergency access. • Dispose of all trash in the proper receptacles,

including pet waste.• Please heed all posted signage, as well as warnings, advisories,

and/or the flying of red (no swimming) flags issued by lifeguards as they are issued for your safety.

• Protect our dunes by not walking, digging on, or climbing on them.

• Utilize the designated dune crossovers to access our beaches, as they offer the first line of defense against wave action.

• Report stranded sea life or sea turtle nests to the lifeguards.• Shipwrecks are part of our area’s history and should be

reported but not disturbed.

Lifeguards: Lifeguards are on duty from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. between May 1 and October 31. The Town maintains lifeguard stations at various locations throughout the summer. Stands are manned at Sprigtail Drive, Barrier Island Station, Schooner Ridge Drive, and Four Seasons Drive from May 26 to September 4; the stands at Scarborough Lane and Plover Drive are manned from June 23 through August 17. Lifeguards also patrol our beach on ATV’s.

Driving: Vehicles are not permitted on our beach between May 1 and September 30. Vehicles are permitted during the offseason by using designated private vehicular access points. There is no public vehicular access to our beach and driving on the dunes is prohibited at all times.

Pets: Dogs may play unleashed on the Town’s beach, although they should be under the watchful eye and control of a guardian. Dogs are allowed on Duck’s beach year-round. As a courtesy, please remember to clean up after your pet. Also, be aware that during the heat of the day, a dog’s paws can burn on the hot sand and he/she can become easily dehydrated by the intense heat or by drinking salt water.

THROUGHOUT TOWNFire Safety: Beach fires, fireworks, and bonfires are not permitted in Duck. Grilling (charcoal or gas) on decks or near vegetation is highly discouraged. Fires can easily ignite the grills when used on or near wooden decks or when not shut down correctly. Make sure that all charcoal ashes are cool before disposing of properly.

Fireworks: While the sale of legal fireworks in Duck is permitted, the use of any and all fireworks (including sparklers, smoke bombs, snake pellets, etc.) is prohibited in Duck. The use of fireworks is punishable by a $250 fine and requires a mandatory court appearance.

Hurricane Preparedness: The Atlantic Hurricane Season is from June 1 to November 30. Be prepared to evacuate when an order is issued by knowing the correct evacuation route; ensuring that your vehicle is fueled; and if you are a visitor, taking all of your belongings including pets, as there is no way to predict when re-entry will be allowed. Follow all evacuation orders, as there are no emergency shelters within our county. During a hurricane or weather-related event, information will be available on the Town’s website and social media, as well as on area radio and television stations.

Ocean/Sound Access: The Town maintains no public beach access. Public sound access is in the Duck Town Park for launching kayaks and canoes, and at the boat pier located on the northern end of the boardwalk for temporary mooring of watercraft.

Personal Watercraft: The landing and launching of personal watercraft is prohibited on the Town’s ocean beach. Personal watercraft may be used in the sound between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., and must be at least 900 feet from the shore.

Pets: Dogs are required to be vaccinated for rabies; collared with proper identification at all times; and controlled by a leash or restraint throughout the Town, including at the park, boardwalk, and Duck Trail.

Traffic and Personal Safety: Obey all posted speed limits and signage throughout the Town. The speed limit through the commercial shopping village is 25 MPH. The Town is also pedestrian

and bicycle-friendly. The Duck Trail, which traverses the entire length of the Town, is utilized by residents and visitors year-round. When you are entering and exiting Duck Road (SR 12) onto side streets or entrance ways, be aware that you may be crossing Duck Trail, look both to your left and right, and use caution. Pedestrians always have the right-of-way. A few items to remember: Heed all posted speed limits; don’t drink and drive; remove personal items from vehicles; and lock vehicles and residences.

Trash: The Town provides both solid waste and recycling curbside pick-up throughout the year. The schedule for solid waste pick-up is: May 1 through September 30 on Mondays and Fridays (twice weekly) and from October 1 through April 30 on Mondays (once weekly). Recycling is picked up every Monday from May 1 through October 31 and on the first and third Monday of each month from November 1 through April 30.

Have trash and recycling containers curbside by 5:00 a.m. on the scheduled pick-up day; and roll the containers back on the same day as empty trash cans can be a hazard. Trash that is left outside the containers, or containers that are overfilled, will not be picked up.

There are trash, recycling, and pet waste containers located in the Town Park, on the boardwalk and Duck Trail, and at various beach accesses and shopping centers throughout Town.

Wildlife: Duck has been designated as a bird sanctuary. Nearly 400 species of birds have been sighted on the Outer Banks and its surrounding waters. Herons, egrets, terns, skimmers, and other birds that breed locally are best seen in the warmer months. Additionally, many areas within Duck provide a natural habitat for our animal population which includes white tailed deer, red foxes, possums, river otters, muskrats, and turtles.

The Duck Trail is a seven-mile long, multi-use path that traverses the entire length of the Town. The trail is primarily located on the east side of Duck Road (ocean side), except for the portion that is within the Town’s Village Commercial area. It provides a scenic and safe recreational venue for residents and visitors to enjoy. It also offers various access points to the Town Boardwalk.

Pedestrians, bicyclists, and in-line skaters share the Duck Trail. Motorized vehicles, mopeds, Segways, and the like are prohibited on the trail.

Please Observe The Following Safety Guidelines At All Times:

While Using The Trail:• Use marked crosswalks.• Pedestrians always have the right-of-way.• Watch for cars entering and exiting from Duck Road (NC 12),

side streets, and parking areas.• Markers for each half mile are located on the trail.• Pedestrians should slow down when being passed.• Cyclists should always pass on the left and kindly alert those

who are being passed.• Clean up after your pet as a courtesy to trail users.• Dogs must be on a leash.• Follow all posted rules.

While Using The Trail In The Village:The Village Commercial area is located between Four Seasons Lane and the Duck Post Office. Its boundaries are designated by the blue line on the map below. In this area, the Duck Trail is located on both sides of the road and is not separated from traffic. For your safety:• Pedestrians should walk against the

direction of traffic.• Bicyclists should ride with traffic.• Be extra careful in this area when walking or bicycling with

small children.
