TOWARDS A « BLUE SOCIETY »

200 years ago, at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, we could not imagine that our activities would upset the great balances of our planet. Today, we are experiencing an exciting step in humankind History in the sense that we have to recreate a better world by thinking « outside the box ». We have to invent a new future, a new society model taking into account that our planet is a finite world with limited resources. And we, the Ocean Community, truly believe that a major part of the solution will come from the Sea.

TOWARDS A « BLUE SOCIETY »

• Cater for the growing needs of humankind. • Preserve livelihoods of future generations, in particular oceans

resources and services, by preserving the balance of marine ecosystems.

The “Blue Society” concept is based on the idea that society must integrate two imperative needs:

OBJECTIVES AND MISSION The objective of the Sea For Society project is to implicate and raise awareness among researchers, policy makers, economic stakeholders, young people, citizens and civil society through dialogue, mutual learning and joint action in a new way of understanding the sea and the ocean, the way of the “Blue Society”. The “Blue Society” means combining together the will and need for progress in a respect of sustainability with the respect of resources.

Financed by the European Commission, this project will allow the Directorate General for Research and Innovation to better identify themes of research and innovating governance modes that have to be implemented for a sustainable management of the oceans. The objective is to define a “Blue Society” based on a healthy environment which creates well-being, new economies and sustainable employment. The involvement of the socio-economic actors, of young people and citizens will be essential to change human behaviors and the choices we make concerning the oceans.

28 partners from 11 European countries (Belgium, France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom) plus Israel launched the definition of the Blue Society during the World Oceans Day in June 2012 at Nausicaá in Boulogne-sur-Mer (France). From the launching of the project to January 2013, the partners (universities, research centres, science museums, Business Innovation Centres, NGOs) will prepare 9 European consultation forums (France, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Spain and Sweden). Between February 2013 and April 2014, the 9 forums will take place focusing on 6 identified specific themes: oceans as supply sources, oceans and health, oceans as places to live, ship transports, oceans and energies and oceans as places of tourism and leisure. Between February 2014 and September 2013, an analysis of the results of the consultation forums will help define axes for mobilisation. Between June 2014 and August 2015, the project will implement a mobilization campaign in the 12 countries involved in the project based on practical actions, sources of inspiration for the Blue Society. Finally, between July 2015 and November 2015, a European conference will summarize the conclusions and bring together the actors of this new vision of the ocean, which we call the “Blue Society”.
