The sudden rise in temperature and frequent power cuts has generated a huge demand to the extent of 70% for inverters, batteries and gensets particularly in north of India.

The NCR continues to reel under massive power cuts in the sweltering heat because of the gap between demand and supply. Frequent power cuts have affected the residents and industry alike, but the one sector for which it has spelt good business prospects are manufacturing and marketing gensets and inverters popularly known as uninterrupted power supply (UPS). The rise in temperature has boosted the demand for inverters and the dealers are minting money out of it.

Earlier, UPS and battery used to be prohibitively pricey for middle income group and was seen as a luxury, but, now UPS has become an inevitable necessity since the households face power cuts for at least six to eight hours a day in most parts of the country. Not only households, even small establishments and shops have started going for UPS to have minimum lighting and fans on in their shops for the convenience of the customers. These gadgets not only provide people respite from the scorching heat, but also come to their aid in administering their business. The demands for such appliances are increasing day by day, with more people purchasing them, due to which business of inverters and generators have increased manifold.

The worst affected sectors that suffer the heat impact include industrial and residential areas, hospitals and schools.

The most in demand inverters are with a capacity of 600 (voltage ampere) VA and 800 VA. These inverters cater to the needs of households and can provide power to two fans, a tube light and a television.

People buy inverters and batteries according to their requirements. A 500 watt inverter with battery is enough for providing power to three tube lights and three fans. Almost every electrical device can run on inverters and therefore, this gadget is much in demand, adding

to majority of dealers dealing in tubular batteries which lasts longer.

Demand is quite unmatched this year. Prices of assembled models have gone up due to the shortage of branded goods. Compared to last summer, the demand has gone up by five to six times at least. This year purchases started early due to the long hours of power breakdown.

The power crisis situation in the country, this year has come as a boon to manufacturers and dealers. Service UpdatesAt Base, our obligation does not end when you buy our product and step out of the store. We are committed to be with you once we hand over our goods to you in the form of our Service Policies. The new Service policy provides comprehensive guidelines on handling, storage and servicing of BASE batteries for utmost convenience.

The key USP of our new service policy are “Document Less warranty” and “Refresh charging”.

Document Less warranty: The paperless warranty is not merely the gimmick of the word “Paperless”. In fact we have put all our efforts to make it “truly paperless”. Base will not ask for any documents from the customers if the battery is sold within 03 months from the date of BCL invoice. Just walk in with the battery to your nearest dealer and if it complies with the aforesaid condition, walk out with a brand new

battery if the premature failure is due to manufacturing fault.

Battery being a product of definite shelf life should be sold within a stipulated time, failing which will result it to self discharge. If a discharged or partially discharged battery is fitted or installed, performance and life of the battery will affect up to a large extent. Our paperless warranty will help us in convincing our channel partners to sell the batteries within 03 months.Having done so will not only ensure the optimum service life and performance of the product, it would eventually improve our customer satisfaction index also.

Refresh Charging: This word is very illusive. As all of us know, preaching is the easiest job to do. Refresh charging till now was merely a word in the policy book, do & don’t on the warranty cards of a battery manufacturer. It was

presumed that making it a point in documents will ensure that it is followed by everyone. But that is now not the case anymore. Base has now devised a unique “Refresh charging” technique. We are not going to teach or instruct the market to do it; instead we will do it ourselves. The Base Service team along with its engineers will now ensure that every battery which is more than 60 days old is Refresh charged. A record will be maintained of all batteries at our distributors point by our service team.

Moreover, Base is the only company which will take the batteries back from its Channel Partners if it is not sold within 5 months from the date of BCL invoice. This is another intrepid step which we have implemented. At the end of the day we want our customers to buy a fresh and fully charged battery with 100% life left on it thus giving them value of the money that they have spent.

During my various tours to all parts of our country, I find one commonality in trade - the general perplexity, ambiguity and skepticism over the future of inverter segment. I feel that the trade forms an opinion on the basis of the contribution of inverter segment to their current sales or that in the last season, maximum. Ironically, even after a robust season also trade is still unsure. It is required to take a comprehensive view of the scenario and keeping facts and figures alongside. I thought it would be useful to the trade if I share the knowledge and available information by way of my column in our newsletter.

Electricity sector in India is predominantly controlled by Government of India PSUs of which major are

1. NTPC – National Thermal Power Corporation2. NHPC – National Hydroelectric Power Corporation3. NPCI – Nuclear Power Corporation Of India

Power Grid Corporation of India is responsible for the interstate transmission of electricity & the development of the national grid.

75% of the electricity is generated by thermal power plants ; 21% by hydroelectric plants and 4% by nuclear plants ( not considering renewable power ).

More than 50% of our country’s commercial energy demand is met through our vast coal reserves. Installed Capacity Thermal Power : 93399 MWInstalled Capacity Hydro Power : 36878 MWInstalled Capacity Nuclear Power : 4120 MWInstalled Capacity Renewable Power : 13242 MW

Total Installed Capacity : 147639 MW

Transmission and distribution losses in India are very high and vary between 30 – 45%, thus reducing the supply to approximately 100000 MW only and currently, electricity demand outstrips supply by 10% - 12%. Projected requirement by 2020: 400000 MW

The average power per capita (watts per person) in India is a modest 51 as against world average of 297. This is approximately 1/6th of the world’s

average. Now, what it means is that an average Indian consumes 1/6th less electricity than anyone else in the world.

However, the consumption in other growing economies like China is also as high as 277 and conspicuously that in countries like US, Canada, Australia & New Zealand the figure jumps to 1460, 1910, 1244 & 1059 respectively.

India, in its pursuit to catch up with the world average and then to the levels of US, Canada, Australia & New Zealand etc will continue to exert pressure on the generation capacity and supply infrastructure for many more years to come. However, there still exists a deficit situation of 10% - 12%. Demand for power products is here to stay for many more years. Even if power situation peaks to ideal, inverter by then would in all likelihood become a lifestyle product!

THANK YOU NOTE BY THE COOHello Friends,

Taking one step further to serve you better, Base recently concluded a Review & Growth Meet at Solan where we brought together the Sales team and the Production team. During the conference, we tried to bridge the gap between our sales dynamics with the factory and also prepared to gear up for the upcoming Automotive season.

We also analyzed the challenges of our current policies that would hinder our aggressive growth plans and hence devised a new customer and dealer friendly service policy and service standards.

At the Sales front, the unpredictability of the recent weather has resulted in an extended season, during which we managed to garner 40% more sales than the previous year. The inverter segment did stipulating business in the northern states like UP, Delhi, Haryana and Punjab. With power cuts amounting to 8-10 hours each day, it became an inevitable necessity to one and all.

As for our Channel Partners, please try to reap the benefits of our monthly incentive schemes to the

utmost capability as those always have on offer tremendous benefits and opportunities. So, keep a close watch on our Newsletter to know more about our monthly plans.

Our Champions League program has been moving ahead with great momentum and we will complete a milestone of 10,000 dealers enrolled as part of this program by the end of August. This will bring us closer to the aggressive growth plan we have chalked out for Base and also enable us to come closer to our 20,000 partner endeavor by the end of 2013 FY.

If you have any queries in regard to our Newsletter, the organization or any suggestions please do write to us on [email protected]. We will ensure to get in touch with you in the shortest possible time.
