Local Glenmore Park residents Jeff and Megan Bromley and Madeleine and Brian McCabe joined a team of passionate Haidong Gumdo swordsmen from the Nepean Wolves and Mountain Wolves martial arts clubs for the 2015 Mulimpia and World Haidong Gumdo Championships in Yeongpyong, South Korea, recently. The Nepean Wolves contingent of seven contestants had trained diligently under the direction of Haidong Gumdo Master Luke Adlam for months leading up

to the championships to ensure they were at peak fi tness, top speed and technical excellence for the bi-annual international competition.

The group competed in a variety of sword disciplines including individual and group set patterns, bamboo cutting and paper cutting. The patterns work is physically and technically demanding as all aspects of the performance must be correct and performed at blistering speed. The paper cutting requires contestants to perform a set pattern of cuts on suspended paper with absolute accuracy – it’s a lot harder than it sounds and is a real test of sword control. Bamboo cutting brings all the elements of swordsmanship together as contestants perform a sequence of prescribed cuts on a number of bamboo poles with extreme precision and speed.

All the blisters and hardwork paid off handsomely when all seven Nepean Wolves fi nished in the top four in the preliminary rounds, and fi ve fi nished in the top four in the fi nals round. Master Luke Adlam led the charge by taking out the coveted, multi-discipline Masters Division and bronze in the group patterns division, Madeleine McCabe also took gold in her patterns and paper cutting events and bronze in bamboo cutting, Megan Williamson took silver in her bamboo cutting, and Jeff Bromley and Rob Harris took bronze for their paper cutting events.

The youngest Nepean Wolves contestant, 16 year-old Megan Bromley, thoroughly enjoyed the experience and is looking forward to doing it all again in two years’ time.

FAITH – ANGLICANArticle by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

I recently came across these helpful words of advice: 1. Avoid riding in cars because they are responsible for 20% of accidents.2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents

occur in the home.3. Avoid walking on the street or footpaths because 14% of

accidents occur to pedestrians.4. Avoid travelling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all

accidents involve these forms of transport.5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals

– so above all else, avoid hospitals.HOWEVER, you will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all

deaths occur in Sunday Church Services! Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you at any given time is at Church!!!

We would love to see YOU at Church here at Glenmore Park Anglican Church.

Church is the best place for you to be to fi nd out about the God who loves you – who wants to give you a secure future with him.

The Bible also often talks about how important it is to care for one another; to show hospitality to one another; to love one another; to forgive one another; to pray for one another; to carry one another’s burdens; to encourage one another; to build each other up.

All these things are part of what it means to be part of a Church family.

At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, at our 4 Sunday Services, and the many ministries and activities that we have throughout the week, this is what we are committed to doing, all in the context of helping people know that real life is found in Jesus.

Do you want to know more? Give me a call on 4733 1635, check us out on Facebook, or our website, or just turn up on Sunday – we would love to meet you! Rev John Lavender

Harvest Hub, a self funded Social Enterprise, supports local growers across the Sydney Basin, including nearby Quakers Hill, Fairfi eld, Horsley Park. This means the produce is super fresh and the purchasing dollar remains within their community.

Daniel Isley has just started a Harvest Food Hub in Glenmore Park.

“It is amazing that a product like this helps out our local farmers while being aff ordable to most people. Although it’s not organic, most produce is sprayfree. It’s seasonal, competitively priced, and all ordering is done online. Then pick up from my Hub. No more looking for a parking spot.”

Jayne Travers-Drapes and Anton van den Berg started Harvest Hub six years ago. There are now over 75 Community Food Hubs in Sydney. Nothing is wasted. This year over

3,000 bags have gone to families in distress, over 4 tonnes of produce unable to go in the bag to Oz Harvest.

They also help farmers in need: “Money for Jam” project helps a Peats Ridge farmer turning their frost aff ected strawberries into jam. All profi ts go back to the grower.

Daniel believes that food education is an often overlooked essential skill in life.

“Knowing what foods to eat to lower your blood pressure, cholesterol whilst gaining great energy and ability to think clearly is a bonus. People will come to realise the incredible taste they have been missing out on with the upside feeling better and maintaining a healthy weight.”

Penrith’s leading creative studio, WRD, has been awarded their second prestigious Sydney Design Award, this time for their publication of the Michelle Bridges 12WBT Cookbook.

Recipients of a silver Publishing award, the studio’s expertise was recognised by industry professionals who unanimously agreed that WRD’s design and production of the fi rst ever 12WBT Cookbook, was up there with the best publishing project Sydney had seen in 2015.

“We are incredibly proud of this achievement as it is recognition from our industry of our expertise in the area of publishing,” stated WRD Creative Director and Glenmore Park resident, Debbie O’Connor. “To be the only studio in Western Sydney to have ever received this award, is a huge honour and accolade for Penrith.”

This isn’t the fi rst award that WRD has won at these awards. In 2013 they were recipients of the Marketing – Brand 360 award for their own rebrand, celebrating their tenth year in business and refl ecting the migration of the studio from purely graphic design to a fully-fl edged creative destination.

The Sydney Design Awards cater for creative disciplines across all design areas, including products and furnishings, architecture, interiors, landscape design, advertising graphic design, fashion and digital media. These awards celebrate the courage in design from both commissioners and creators.

To fi nd out more about the brands that WRD have produced, please head to their website at www.whiteriverdesign.com.

Fathers’ DayThe fi rst Sunday of September each

year in Australia is celebrated in honour of fathers, just as the second Sunday each May honours mothers. It seems to me that Mothers’ Day gets a great deal more attention than Fathers’ Day, even though retailers do their very best to maximise profi ts by promoting each quite vigorously!

Nonetheless, as Fathers’ Day draws near it is an opportunity to give thanks for the gift of fathers and fatherhood, often undervalued in our society.

From a Christian faith perspective, we encounter the word “Father” quite a lot in the scriptures, most notably in the Lord’s Prayer, often referred to as the “Our Father”. It gets this name, of course, from the fi rst two words of this great prayer, taught by Jesus in his Sermon on the Mount. St Teresa of Avila, one of the great Christian mystics, said that she always marvelled at this prayer because she found it hard to get past these fi rst two words, so incredible was it to think that God allows us to refer to him as a father because of his desire for intimacy with us.

Of course, God transcends either fatherhood or motherhood, but it is comforting to know that God cares for us even beyond the most tender and loving experiences children have with their parents. Fathers, of course, relate to children in a particular way and we can all recall from our childhood experiences which were particular to our fathers, just as others were particular to our mothers. It may have been something active or something passive but let us take the opportunity this Fathers’ Day to call to mind memories that bind us to our fathers and thank God for the way they refl ected for us something of God’s love for all.

If you would like to join a group of Christians who can assist you to know Christ better and to be a part of a supportive, vibrant and active Christian community, we would love to welcome you! Contact details and Mass times are above.

Looking forward to welcoming you!Fr Robert Riedling, Parish Priest

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

Most people can recognise that doing a good deed makes you feel good. Have you ever thought about why?

The Bible teaches that humans are made in the image of God, and that love characterises who God is. This means that when we express

love to others we are doing something that we were made to do. Fish were made to swim, birds were made to fl y, and we were made to love. And when we do, we are in our element and feel euphoria – like a bird taking fl ight. The fact that it doesn’t come naturally and we more often live for ourselves makes the boost to our souls all the more obvious.

Now by “loving” I don’t mean a live-and-let-live attitude by which we don’t upset the applecart and nicely tolerate each other, but much more a Good Samaritan-type of attitude. Jesus loved us by sacrifi cing himself for our eternal wellbeing and he taught that we should love each other in the same way – by making sacrifi ces for each other’s wellbeing. Again he was pointing to the way humans function best, and for this reason, when we truly act for the wellbeing of others we feel a boost in our souls – we are like a fi sh returning to water, or a bird taking fl ight.

I heard a story on the radio a few years ago about a psychologist in Melbourne who treated a number of his patients who were very successful but unhappy, in an unusual way. He prescribed a weekly program of doing good deeds for others! He was tapping into one of Christ’s deep insights into how the human soul thrives.

Imagine how happy we would be as a suburb if we all had a go at embracing the wisdom of Jesus by making little sacrifi ces for each other’s wellbeing: on the roads, when we see a need, when we have diff erent views on things – whether over football or the same-sex marriage debate, or with an encouraging word.

Go well, Paul, Pastor

The Leura Gardens Festival, now in its 51st year, is a must-visit attraction for gardeners from all over Australia.

And with the sad ending of the long-running Open Gardens Australia, many gardeners are looking to Leura to provide their necessary “gardening fix” for the year.

This year’s Leura Gardens Festival will take place from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 11, 2015.

Visitors are this year being invited to experience the magic of Spring in the beautiful Blue Mountains. Ten wonderful Leura gardens will be open for the festival, including two brand new to the festival, two returning after a break, plus several magical old favourites.

And in an exclusive offer for tour groups, special garden viewings are available for groups of 20+ people in the five days (Monday, September 28 – Friday, October 2, 2015) prior to the main festival. Three of these gardens will only be open in the pre-festival period.

Visitors to the main festival can also enjoy the always-popular music programme, this year featuring several new performers, and an art show highlighting works done by local artists depicting the festival gardens.

Visitors can also take advantage of the excellent prices at the festival plant sales centre which will offer many exotic and native plants which are hard to get elsewhere. Plants are sourced from a wide variety of nurseries so visitors from any climate should be able to find some treasures to suit their particular conditions.

The Leura Gardens Festival is a registered charity totally run by local volunteers. All funds raised are used to purchase equipment for the Blue Mountains District Anzac Memorial Hospital as well as supporting other local medical organisations.

More details of this not-to-be missed event for garden lovers are available on our website at www.leuragardensfestival.com.au or phone 0431 095 279.

PARENTS CORNER

Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood ServicesP: 0409 986121 or 47218520E: [email protected]: Parenting in PenrithBlog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Last month, I listed the services available to parents who are interested in learning more about parenting. This month I said I would write about what to do if you are concerned that your child may have a disability or disorder.

The main diffi culties that I see in children in the work that I do are autism, anxiety, ADHD, and sensory processing disorder. The national statistics on these conditions are:

• Autism – 1 in 100 children• Anxiety – 1 in 10 children• ADHD – 1 in 10 children• Sensory processing disorder – 1 in 20 childrenOf course, there are alot of other disorders and syndromes

that can aff ect children’s thinking, feeling, and doing. Frequently, parents are concerned about getting their child assessed for fear of their child being labelled. It is my experience that children like to know the reason why they are diff erent to other children, it makes sense to them. A diagnosis also helps teachers to accommodate your child’s unique needs and abilities. And more importantly, the earlier the diagnosis the earlier you can start intervention, and early intervention makes a huge diff erence in the lives of children.

You can discuss your concerns about your child’s development with your General Practitioner (doctor). Your GP may refer you to a paediatrician or you may ask for a Mental Health Care Plan which will allow you to claim a Medicare rebate on the fees to see a psychologist or occupational therapist for an assessment. Psychologists and paediatricians can assess for autism and ADHD. Psychologists can assess for anxiety. Occupational Therapists can assess for sensory processing disorder. It is very important to get an assessment by a professional and not to diagnose your child yourself or listen to other people who are not qualifi ed to give you advice.

Once you have a diagnosis, there are services which provide support for parents depending on the diff erent ability your child has. For example, the Luke Priddis Foundation, ASPECT, Northcott, Lifestart, Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services, and Stepping Stones Triple P. Parents fi nd that connecting with other parents who understand their child’s challenges, off er a listening ear and helpful suggestions, is very supportive and a good form of self-care. These services may also off er activities for the children or the family as a whole.

COUNSELLING CORNER

Remember last month we met Sandy and Mike? They were both super busy with the rigours of work and parenthood and felt the fl ame had gone out of their relationship. We are looking at three strategies to help rekindle their intimacy. Today we look at the fi nal strategy.

One of the things I like to do when working with couples is ask them to reverse roles (to the extent possible). In other words, one person in the relationship literally switches regularly held duties and activities with their spouse.

Examples: If you are the one who usually does the cooking, let your partner attend to it for the night. If your partner is the one who always mows the lawn, you assume that task. You get the general point.

What I have generally found that happens during this activity is a new sense of awareness on the part of both individuals about one another. The most frequent comment made in fact is: “I had no idea what this was like for you.”

By literally walking in our partners’ shoes – even for a day – we gain fresh insight into their life and increase our awareness about their experiences.Summing Things Up

Breathing new life back into a long term relationship isn’t easy. Anybody who claims otherwise frankly doesn’t know what they are talking about. It takes real eff ort to keep a sense of connection alive. By remember to not presume you know what the other is going to say and treating them like you have just met them, using active listening and reversing relational roles, you can help to keep the connection strong with your other half and really enjoy their presence in your life.

Mulgoa Senior School Leadership Students Visit NSW Parliament House

Tanya Davies was impressed by the students’ ideas and questions that were shared. “The students were great representatives of the talent in Mulgoa and they asked some interesting questions of the Members of Parliament” Tanya Davies said.

“This was an experience I will never forget – the amount of sacrifi ce and hardships these amazing Ministers have endured to be where they are today is nothing short of incredible and awe-inspiring. I thank Tanya and all other Members of importance for sharing their stories and guidance in becoming the best us young leaders can be. Such a delight and privilege to attend this event” said Alaina Scutts of Glenmore Park High School.

“This forum was extremely worth it – the advice given by all the ministers was fantastic and extremely helpful. Tanya herself is an extraordinary role model; I’d recommend that students, not just leaders, consider contacting her. I thoroughly enjoyed the day, and I’m extremely thankful to all involved for allowing me the opportunity” said Ben Turnell of Glenmore Park High School.

Tanya Davies then gave the students a personal tour of Parliament House.

“I believe in our young people and their aspirations for themselves and their wider school and local communities” said Tanya Davies.

“It is important that our young leaders have an insight into how their government functions. This experience may have opened their eyes to wider possibilities for their own futures. I hope that the Forum challenged our young leaders to be confi dent, courageous, passionate and disciplined leaders to continue to make a diff erence in their communities” said Tanya Davies.

Winter months and will soon be delighting in the warmth of Spring. It’s the season of blooming fl owers, abundance and change. It’s the perfect time for a Spring clean and to shed those Winter

layers (& I’m not referring to your favourite Winter clothes!).Doesn’t it seem unfair how quickly and eff ortlessly Winter kilos

pile up, and how much time and eff ort you’ve found it takes to lose them?

It is possible to easily turn things around and use the warmer days to your advantage. Physical activity will get your happy ‘endorphin’ chemicals fl owing and your cheeks glowing!

However, your NUMBER ONE weight loss tool is FOOD - clean and fresh! You know what to do… STOP with the processed foods, soft drinks, high sugary foods and refi ned carbohydrates (white breads, white rice and pasta). These foods will sabotage any weight loss mission and add to your cravings for sweet treats! So beat these cravings and kick start your metabolism by enjoying fresh seasonal salads instead. Make your salads and your taste buds zing with touches of onion, garlic, mint, parsley and chives!

If you fi nd yourself stuck on a plateau or not losing the weight you would like, then come in and get some expert help and support. You can take advantage of our free 30min strategy session to get the answers which will make your scales start moving again in the right direction!

Spring is fi nally here, the sun is out, the days are getting longer and its time to pull out the summer dresses, singlets and shorts.

If the thought of bearing a little skin makes you a little nervous then read on!!

Follow these 5 steps over the next 30 days to have you feeling confi dent and ready for the warmer months ahead!

1. Go Bread Free: Going bread-free for 30 days is such a simple way to accelerate fat loss. Just think of all the extra carbs and calories that you’ll be saving yourself from.2. Workout 5x’s Each Week: Take the next 30 days to really focus your eff orts on training. Train as if you were preparing yourself for an athletic event, with the mindset that each and every workout is important in seeing you through your goal. 3. Go Sugar Free: Sugar is the biggest thing holding you back when it comes to dropping fat and getting lean. The best way to achieve this is to throw out any sugar/junk food/chocolate you may have in your pantry or desk draws. It will be tough at fi rst but so worth it!4. Focus on Protein and Veggies: Enough about all the things you can’t eat, let’s talk about what you can eat. Your meals should be a variety of protein and veggies. For protein stick with organic, hormone-free meat that has been roasted, baked or grilled. For veggies, avoid starchy veggies like potatoes, and instead stick with an assortment of colourful, fi bre-fi lled veggies. 5. Commit to be Fit: The quickest way to get your body into tip-top shape is to join one of our fi tness programs. I’m here to get you into the best shape of your life, with my proven, eff ective training programs and food plans. Make the commitment now, and together we can make the body of your dreams a reality.

Remember, the next 30 days are going to pass whether you jump on board with our fi tness plan or not. So call or email now so we can get started!! Have a great, fun and safe Spring.

PARENTS CORNERMONEY MATTERS

It’s Spring Selling Season. Are You Ready?Spring is here and frankly I’m glad to have warmer weather ahead. Historically, the

Real Estate market also heats up in Spring due to the fact that sellers often delay listing their homes during Winter in favour of warmer months when more people are out and about. For this reason Spring is known as the “Selling Season”.

With more stock available this presents a great opportunity for buyers to find their dream home or that investment property gem. But you had better be prepared because in this competitive market, most homes are snapped up on the day they hit the market. As the old adage goes, “He (or she) who hesitates is lost”.

So how can you be prepared to act when your perfect property hits the market? Here are my top 3 tips to help you beat the competition.

1. Knowledge is Power. Research your target suburb so that you understand the value of property. Look at recent sales and compare prices achieved on similar homes to the type you are looking for. Keep in mind that according to RP Data home values have grown by 15% in the year to July 2015. To put that into perspective, a home valued at $500,000 is currently increasing in value by $6,250 per month, so a sale 3 months ago will be worth nearly $20,000 more today.

2. Legal Representation. Meet with and appoint your Solicitor or Conveyancer ahead of time. Purchasing a home will probably be the biggest purchase of your life and you need someone protecting your interests throughout the transaction. Plus, if you make a successful offer the Agent will want to know who is representing you.

3. Finance Ready. Nothing says “Serious Buyer” to an Agent more than someone with his or her finance sorted and adds serious weight to your offer.

At Great Aussie Dream, we’re all about helping our Clients ready themselves to purchase, with free RP Data property reports, great advice, some of the best rates in the market and of course our Award Winning service.

Theresa had a Baby Girl!!!!

Congratulations to Theresa and her partner on the safe delivery of baby Zahra Grace. Theresa is currently on maternity leave.RSPCA Cupcake Day Was a Huge Success

A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise awareness and money for the RSPCA.

We hosted a Cupcake Week at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital starting on Monday 17th August 2015.

Thank you to everyone who came in and donated and ate a cupcake or two. Also a huge

thank you for the online donations. We raised over $500.00 for the RSPCA with your help.

Renai, Sheridan, Rachel, Stacey, Eden, Lizzie, Jessica, Ben and Vicki cooked up a storm and provided the most delicious peppermint slice, other delicious slices, and of course cupcakes.

The Pupcakes were made from the Hills WD science diet baked into cupcakes and iced with peanut butter. Pony and Bella loved eating the Pupcakes!

Thanks again for supporting a great cause! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty

to Animals, a non-profi t, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection.

The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community, through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations,

fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants, to support its vital daily work.

We wish every day was cupcake day!Dog Lovers Show Was Fantastic

The Sydney Dog Lovers Show on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th August 2015 at The Hordern Pavilion was fantastic!

Camille Brandt attended the Dog Lovers Show as a special guest of Rose-Hip Vita and took Pony and Bella. Camille answered numerous questions from the public at the Rose-Hip Vital stall.

I was so proud of Pony and Bella, they loved all of the attention. Pony was such a crowd pleaser. Bella was clever (as usual), she just laid down and let the people come to her for a pat. Pony walked up to everyone for a pat and by lunchtime he needed a well earned nap.

The Sydney Dog Lovers Show had over 150+ exhibitors showcasing dog products and services in Australia. So many freebies!

There were so many celebrities, including Dr Katrina & The Wonderdogs, Dr Lisa Chimes (Bondi Vet), James & Anthony (Village Vets Australia on the The LifeStyle Channel) and Laura Vissaritis (Dognitive Therapy) as MC.

What a great weekend! Please feel free to pop in

anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
