Every year, around the end of March, the clocks go

forward one hour. And every year, around the end ofOctober, the clocks go back one hour. But why? What isthe point? I decided to look into this further.

    History

The idea of changing the clocks forward in Britain was firstproposed by horse rider William Willet, who was disgustedby the amount of sunlight which was being wasted in themornings because people were still in bed. Willet started

printing pamphlets in 1907 entitled to try andget people to wake up earlier, but they were ignored until

1916. Ironically, one year after, Wilton died.

During the Second World War, Britain came up with ascheme called Double British Summer Time. The ideawas that the clocks would be ahead of GMT (Greenwich

Mean Time, or normal time) by one hour during winter, andtwo hours during summer.

In 1968 the clocks went forwards as usual, but instead of

returning to GMT, Britain remained in BST for the nextthree years, as an experiment. It was found that there wereboth pros and cons to the experiment, and to this day wehave continued to keep BST for summer only.

    More Recent Incidents and Dissents

In 2011, there was talk of moving Britains time forward forgood, effectively re-employing the Double Summer Timeof 1939. Many areas were in agreement with this idea, but

    Scotland disagreed.

They said that this would mean that many areas up northwouldnt get daylight until 10am.

This would increase road accidents, and possibly result indeaths of children walking home from school.

    Story continued from page 1

There was talk of having two separate time zones, butthings such as transport timetables and border crossingdifficulties effectively put a stop to it.

Farmers, originally against the idea, said they had no

preference now, especially as milking cows and othersuch necessities were done inside, meaning that there

    was no need for sunlight.

Scientists and experts said that the body clock is set torise with the sun. If you wake up and see light, yourclock would reset itself.

If you woke up and it was dark, you were less likely to

full awake, which may also cause road accidents.

In the end the idea was over ruled.

So, there you are. Its been almost a century since ourfirst BST, and we still cant make up our minds about it.We never have, and probably never will. But what doyou think. Is British summer time useless? Could wedeal with multiple time zones? See if you can make up

    your mind.

SyriaSince March 2011 the Syrians have been living ina state of Civil War. It started after 15 school

The plan is for Syria to get rid of all of thechemical weapons, made by the Syrian

government. Russian and USA leaders have senta specialist team to search for chemical weapons

and destroy them if they find any. There are an estimated 10,000 tonnes of suchweaponry in the country. Also Syria has no

choice but to destroy their weapons by 2014.

    Fast-Foodby George Symonds

I had a busy week-end, which meant I had to make use of a local fast-food delicacy found atSIMPLY DELICIOUS KEBAB, on the Rudgeway Lay-by, A38. We joined a long line of localpolicemen, clearly a popular choice for busy people who need food fast!

On the Menu for Me:I had a mixed meat kebab with an assortment of salad. For those who have never experienced anauthentic Turkish kebab, the meat is cut and cooked freshly while you wait and inserted in to softpitta bread. Succulent salad and sauce of your choice is added to taste. Mine had a divine flavour-the meat was juicy but the chilli sauce was too strong and overpowered the flavour of the chickenand lamb.

Georges Star Rating out of 5

Ambiance:There was a good atmosphere between staff and customers;however, waiting in the cold and dark is not ideal.

    Tastiness:Yummy when youre hungry!

Value for Money:Enormous portions for the price.

Friendliness of staff:We had a nice chat and I got a free lollipop!

Speediness of Arrival:Super speedy, only took 4 minutes 46 seconds.

    Cleanliness:

From what I could see, all seemed adequate.

Helena s How To Make A Clock

    Step 1

Start with the base of your clock. What are you making it out of? Youcould choose a piece of rectangular plywood, the kind that could bestained nicely but that has grain and a nice appeal. People lovenatural wood decor in their homes, but if thats not your style, considerusing a tile (like a vintage hexagonal tile or a wall tile), a dinner plate,or obscure things like a bicycle wheel, or a book - so that the handspop through the cover.Use a drill bit to create a space for the I shaft the brass colouredstick you can see in the picture.

    Step 2

Note the thickness of what you are using as your baseifyour material is thin youll have to put a spacer to fit betweenthe mechanism and the front of the clock so only a bit of theI shaft shows through the hole.

    Step 3

Assemble the clock hands per the instructions. It willtake all of 60 seconds and it is very easy, but thehands are fragile, so be gentle.

    Step 4

Once assembled, it will look complete but it is optionalto do an extra step: The metal hands can be cut tolength if you need shorter hands to fit your project. You could also trim the way the tip of each handlooks.

This week I have chosen a book that isnt in theschool library so I had to borrow it from Aditi, Ihave read the first few chapters and it soundsreally exciting. I would recommend that the librarytries to get hold of this book so that you can allread it.

Frozen in timeBy Ali SparkesSimilar to the film Back to the future this novelcompares 2 different time periods. In this bookchildren from the 1950s are discovered, bychildren (Rachel and Ben), in 2009. At firstRachel and Ben had only wanted to go out andplay, until they found a shiny thing. They had noidea whatsoever what they had found. What

would children from the olden days think of ourworld now?

This book looks really exciting. Aditi - can Iborrow it for another few days so that I can finishit?!

    Musical Momentswith Annabel Sheppard

Today I will be telling you about two piecesof music - the longest and the shortest

pieces I could find. One which I browsed

was one of the longest pieces going to beplayed in the world; one which is theshortest in the world has already been

played. I hope you will be amazed about thelongest piece!

    The longest piece of music

The longest piece of music is called Olitskyand has been engineered by a British

composer called Dr Ian D Mellish. Themusic is recorded on four loops of tapeeach of different lengths. The four loops arestarted at the same time. As each loop endsand re-starts, it becomes out of synch withthe others. The first time all four loops endand re-start at the same time (and so comeback into synch again) will be inanamazing: 1,648,171 years, 7 weeks, 6 days,10 hours, 23 minutes and 33 seconds!! It isvery exciting! I wonder what will happen in

    the year it finishes

    The shortest piece of music

The shortest piece of music I could find onYouTube was 4 seconds long! It was madeby J.W. Hassler.

Although this book is not in the library, wehave the whole Shapeshifters series by Ali

    Time Instrumentsby Henry Allan-Jones

People have been trying to tell the time for thousands of years. The way they do this has changed as they develop newinstruments.

SundialA sundial is a device that tells the time of day by theposition of the Sun. A sundial has a pointer in the middle and aflat surface. The Sun casts a shadow from the pointer onto thesurface which is marked with lines indicating the hours of the day.Sundials have been used since people started measuring time.

Marine ChronometerJohn Harrison was a carpenter and a clockmaker who invented several clocks in the 18th Century. The bestone was like a large pocket watch and called a marine chronometer. It had to be very accurate so that people could use it to navigate atsea using some maths which meant you had to know what time itwas in England when it was noon at the place you were.King George III measured one of John Harrisons clocks and foundit was accurate to one third of a second per day. There was a prizefor the person who made the first accurate clock people could useat sea and John Harrison won about 8000 which would have beenthe same as a 1 million prize today.

Atomic ClockAll mechanical clocks work by counting thevibration of something which has a frequency, like a pendulum. The frequencies measured by atomic clocks are much higherthan a pendulum, which makes them very, very accurate.Caesium I was a clock which was so accurate it would onlygain or lose 1 second in 300 years. Modern atomic clocksare even more accurate than this.

Jokes From the Jesterby Ms CaseWhat does a clock do when it's hungry?

    It goes back for/four seconds!

Why did the girl sit on a clock? To be on time!

What animal keeps the best time?A watch dog!

I was going to look for my missing watch, but I could never find the time.

How many months have 28 days? All of them!

    Time Phrases

    by Lucy Allan-Jones

This week I have been exploring different time phrases, what they mean and how they are used.

A Stitch In TimeSaves Nine- means that it is better to deal with problems immediately before theyget any worse.

Time and Tide Wait For No Man is said to emphasize that people cannot stop the passing of timeand therefore should not delay doing things.

Time Hangs Heavy this is said when minutes, hours and weeks seem to go by very slowly.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age offoolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, itwas great the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we hadeverything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were allgoing direct the other way. This is the introduction to Charles Dickens book A Tale of TwoCities it is basically comparing opposites.

Procrastination is the thief of time - this means delaying something or putting it off because youare thinking about it too much will mean you run out of time to actually do it.

Theres No Time Like the present - Means do it now dont wait!

    Carpe Deum- Seize the day

To pass: touch the player you want to passto.

To shoot: make an arc with your finger. Thequicker the arc the faster and lessaccurate it is.

To move: touch and hold the player with theball, and drag him along the screen.

It claims to have a number of excellent features :

The question that is asked the most; we hear it everyday,

What time Is it? they want to know, and then they go away.

It's time for bed, it's time for work, or time to feed the fishes,

It's time to take your medicine, or wash and dry the dishes.

Time in seconds, time in hours, so many freckles past a hair,

depending on the zone, or whether daylights savings there.

Time is measured many ways from minutes to months,

Time is what keeps everything from happening at once!

A time to live, a time to die, a time for having fun,

Clocks and calendars alike, all scheduled by the sun.

Intervals that cant be hurried, will not be denied,

a season that we know that's coming, as surely as the tide.

If there ever comes a time when time will be no more,

I wonder how we'll know to quit, or when it was before.

Do we hurry? Do we loaf? It depends upon the time...

Had we started earlier, we'd be finished with this rhyme.
