The times they are a-changing ....

The change from BST this coming weekend usually signals an upsurge in the fortunes of lighting companies up and down the country. The rest of the nation may be missing the lovely long evenings and bright early mornings of summer, but for anyone involved in the industry, this is haymaking time.

I had hoped to be attending the Hong Kong Lighting Show this week, but deadlines have made the trip impossible this year. However, I’ve already heard that visitor numbers are up on previous shows, with attendees from Europe on the rise. The event is hosting more than 2100 exhibitors, including a few hardy Brits, so well done to them all for taking on the logistical problems of exhibiting halfway around the world and fl ying the fl ag.

Last time I was there, there were issues with copying of products, that I was led to believe were putting exhibitors off, but in truth, as soon as a product’s launched, it’s likely to be copied and manufactured somewhere in the Far East. What we’re beginning to hear now is that a growing number of British companies are choosing to manufacture high end fi ttings overseas, but with supervision and quality control methods in place to stop any shoddy materials being used. So controlled quality, safe products but without the addition to the price tag of a European labour force – surely a win-win?

Just around the corner, is LuxLive, which I’m pleased to see sees to be concentrating heavily on reduction of carbon footprinting and all things energy saving, followed in January by Interiors 2012 - and then of course, its ARC, so it looks as if we’ll all be getting a taste of the latest innovations and designs before much longer – wherever we’re based and however far we’re prepared to travel. Everyone is being particularly secretive this year, so we’re expecting great things!

I saw my fi rst Christmas lighting installation this week – yes, really! I enjoy the festivities as much as the next person, but in October – surely that’s a bit previous? To celebrate the coming season, we’re featuring some of the latest designs for our high streets and malls this year, so lots of ‘aaah’ factor on page 51. Also not to be missed this month is TLs Q&A with designer Bruce Munroe on page 18 - a genius if ever there was one - and a stunning lighting design for a suite of lawyers offi ces in the City. My parents always said I should study law ...

Enjoy - and don’t forget to change those alarm clocks!

Click Scolmore is launching an ambitious investment plan that will see its lighting division grow significantly over the next five years and contribute to the substantial growth the company is predicting in the period to 2016.

At the heart of the new strategy is the creation of an umbrella brand for lighting - OVIA - under which all of its lighting ranges will operate.

The company’s foray into lighting began back in 1995. The lighting side of the business has since been the subject of some major investments as the company strives to build a name for itself in this highly specialised industry.

China has completed its largest highway lighting upgrade to date with more than 10,000 street lights upgraded to feature more than a million Cree XLamp high efficiency white (HEW) LEDs.

The Shenzhen project includes nearly 75 miles of road, with LED fixtures installed along one tunnel and four highways, and was a key component of the 2011 summer Universidade, an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU), hosted by Shenzhen in August.

In compliance with China’s stringent roadway lighting requirements for light efficacy, brightness, luminance, heat dissipation and service lifespan, Kingsun Optoelectronic selected Cree XLamp LEDs to illuminate Jihe highway number G15, Nanguang highway number G9411, Longda highway number S318, Yanba highway as well as the Dameisha Tunnel.

Kingsun installed 270-watt and 300-watt RL2R Apollo LED luminaires alongside the highways, including three traffic lanes and an emergency lane in each direction. The installation was designed to average more than 20lux, the national standard for main roads illumination.

China revolutionON Semiconductor has expanded its portfolio of CCRs to include the NSI50350A. This simple and extremely robust device is designed to provide a thermally-efficient and cost-effective alternative to passive components or driver-integrated circuit solutions for current regulation of LEDs.

The device is ideal for a variety of 1W lighting applications including automotive, architectural lighting and signage.

The NSI50350A CCR incorporates self-biased transistor technology and regulates current over a wide voltage range. It is designed with a built-in LED driver and has a negative temperature coefficient to protect LEDs from thermal runaway at extreme voltages and currents. The 350 mA ± 10% steady state regulation current (Ireg) is ideal for driving 1W LEDs; for applications requiring 2.0 W LEDs, two of the NSI50350A CCRs can be placed in parallel. The device has an operating temperature range of −55 °C to +175 °C.

Northern lightsThe Norweigen city of Oslo has awarded

a contract to the French company Citelum to deploy an echelon- and streetlight vision-based infrastructure to control all of its street lighting. The solution places Echelon’s control operating system-powered streetlight segment controller in each of the 750 cabinets that control all of Oslo’s 65,000 street lights.

The project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Domestic lamp replacementVerbatim has produced two LED lamps designed for the B22 bayonet fitting. The classic A-style lamps, which offer 75% energy savings over traditional incandescents, have a service life of 35,000 hours, around 50 times that of a conventional bulb. To date, most LED lamp manufacturers have only introduced products with screw fittings to address the European market, or spotlights. There are two models, a 6.5W and a 10W version. Both offer a warm white light with colour temperatures of 2700K and 3000K respectively.

Verbatim’s LED lamps are available through wholesale and retail outlets, with RRP’s prices starting at £21.99

Ocean Optics’ UK lighting channel partner, Pro-Lite has announced the release of Torus, a miniature spectrometer tuned for the visible wavelength range, which features an extremely low level of stray light (0.03% at 400 nm), making it ideal for measuring the intensity and colour of LEDs. Its increased sensitivity and throughput also make is perfect for low light level applications.

Torus delivers scientific-grade performance with outstanding thermal stability, making is a good choice for a wide range of otherwise challenging light measurement applications. It uses a variable line spacing diffraction grating with a 550 grooves per mm groove density at its centre and a nominal blaze wavelength of 400 nm. This design yields an optical bench in which light can be manipulated more efficiently.

The concave holographic grating also helps to improve the thermal stability of the Torus. Wavelength drift is nearly eliminated and peak spectral shape stays the same over a wide temperature range. As a result, Torus is well suited to precision metrology, fluorescence and absorbance applications all of which demand low stray light and high thermal stability. A

King's College London has replaced manually switch-operated ceiling fittings with 800 high-frequency sensor-controlled lights from Steinel at one of its halls of residence. The move will provide payback within two years and help fund the college's next energy/carbon reduction project.

King’s College London has had a long commitment to carbon minimisation, and landmark projects have helped promote the college into the vanguard of environmentally proactive education facilities. In fact, it was one of the first colleges to receive the EN 16001 energy management standard and is now looking at the ISO 50001 equivalent.

One of the latest energy reduction projects came about as a result of constantly finding lights left on at the college’s Great Dover Street Halls of Residence. The answer was to use intelligent lighting.

'We had quite a demanding specification,' admits McIntyre. 'We wanted a light with an integral control system, as well as energy savings. Initially I couldn’t see anything on the market suitable, but then I saw the Steinel RS PRO 500 high-frequency sensor light at an exhibition – it was just being launched and it struck me there was nothing else like it.

'The RS PRO 500 has totally solved our problem,' states McIntyre. 'The students have some low level background lighting with the main low energy lamps activating as soon as someone enters the corridor. Further lamps activate as the person moves along and the lamps remain on for 15 minutes before switching off automatically.'

A FINE

ARTHe is the talent behind memorable lighting sculptures and installations and excels in domestic schemes, but where did Bruce Munro develop such passion and skill? He took time out discuss the thoughts behind his innovative designs with TL

Focu

son

peo

ple

What do you think has contributed to your success within the industry? I still think of what I do as being very much on the periphery of a huge industry. Thankfully, I’ve managed to carve out a niche market, which is quite difficult to copy. Our USP is about creating light planning, custom pieces and art installations. This has come about simply because I followed my instincts and passion from an early age. I’ve loved creating things all my life. The secret of success is quite bland: 98 per cent hard slog, one per cent talent and one per cent luck. I’m fortunate that hard slog for me is more like play.

What sparked your interest in lighting to start with? Without being overly clichéd, it started when I was very young. My first conscious memory of light at three or four came in the form of a tinsel Christmas tree. I was transfixed by the shimmering silvers and Lilliputian tree lights in contrast to the warmth of candle light. At eight or nine, I remember being so transfixed by a clear Lego brick with light - the one that used a 9v battery - I ended up pilfering it from a local toyshop. I still feel guilty! At age 10, I was allowed to play with my parents’ standard eight-cine projector. I spent hours looking at miniature celluloid and projecting them onto the lathe and plaster walls of our cottage. Everything I loved about life had a light element.

How did you get into the industry? I was working in Sydney doing a variety of jobs as well as an evening course at Saatchi & Saatchi. I discovered a fluorescent plastic tubing that, when irradiated by UV light, glowed like neon. I couldn’t help myself. I sourced the importer’s details and bought a job lot and began to make sculptures on the floor of my flat. One of the art directors at Saatchi, Terry Bunton, offered to write the copy for a two-page brochure and that was that. Several years later - by some miracle - my one-man-band business was bought out by a design-lighting company that had showrooms all over Australia and New Zealand.

What was your first job in lighting? The first commission was for the Annual Advertising Awards dinner in Sydney. I created a neon equivalent of the award pencil (their logo). I made it on the floor of my two-bedroom flat and was paid in kind; two tickets to the dinner, free booze, food and a bevy of beautiful girls to try and chat up. It led to a write-up in a quite a serious advertising journal, which in turn led to a couple of jobs that set me up.

TL: What influenced your decision to create your own lighting company? I’ve always enjoyed doing my own thing and not being told how, when and what to do. I never set out to own a business, but it became necessary when I realised I wanted to do all these things in life.

How does Bruce Munro Lighting stand out from other designers? We design, make and install. Aside from the art-based creations and installations, we have a great understanding and feel for domestic and small commercial lighting schemes, headed up by Andrew Johnston. We try to be varied in our approach without reinventing the wheel. Being creative is all about making the bland spaces sing.

You create sculptures, and art as well as garden and interior lighting. How did you become involved in such a range of areas? When I started in the UK, I began lighting spaces. I knew little about lighting design but assumed it was rather like painting. I used to look at the functionality of a luminaire and lamp and simply position it in a space to create the desired effect and function. I saw it as swapping paints, brushes and substrates for luminaires and buildings. I never have got bogged down with the technical details and naturally referred to site electricians for their advice when it came to installation. After a while I realised that the choice of lighting was quite limited. I started making pieces as a loss leader, just for the fun of making them. I soon realised that not only did I love creating these pieces, but clients were also willing to pay for them.

What area do you prefer to design for? I love creating the installations. They come from a

spontaneous beginning; often involve the skill and help of others, are created from fairly simple materials and are short-lived.

How do lighting sculptures and installations differ? I suppose a sculpture tends to be more permanent. The term ‘sculpture’ for me means a three-dimensional representation of an idea. I see things simply and try to express my thoughts and ideas in the same spirit.

How long does an installation usually take to complete? My first installation, Field of Light took me 15 years to realise. Fortunately the time elapsed between concept and realisation has dramatically reduced in recent years! An installation is not something that one can easily define. I think it has a lot to do with one's intent. For example, if you pick up a handful of sand and consciously scatter it across some rocks with the knowledge that it will be swept away on the next incoming tide - that to me is as relevant as covering a field with six million CDs. Often the original inspiration that creates the installation is not conveyed to the viewer.

What influences your lighting sculptures and installations? I keep sketchbooks, which record everything that interests me. Often I find that seemingly disconnected thoughts and ideas come into my head and morph into something else. I have learned not to force the ideas; just to let them happen. I discovered that while I’m driving, seemingly disparate ideas mingle in interesting ways.

To date, what has been you favourite piece to create? CDSea, because it reminds me of my father. I was sitting at a harbour beach, Nielsen Park in Sydney in the mid ‘80s, feeling a bit down in the dumps. My father lived in Salcombe, Devon. I had this daft notion that putting my hand in the sea sort of connected me to him, possibly because the sea was continuous. I remember being mesmerised by the almost blinding, shimmering light of the afternoon sun across the water. The idea of recreating the sea out of old CDs in the field popped into my head. It’s very personal and I would not expect others to feel exactly the same but the installation did seem to positively move people.

Where have your pieces been displayed? Installations have been at Long Knoll (my field at home), Salisbury Cathedral and its cloister, Harvey Nichols, the V&A museum, The Eden Project and the Guggenheim Museum in New York. Next year my first one-man show will be at Longwood Gardens, US.

Being creative is all about making the bland spaces sing

Is there a specific target audience for your sculptures? Anyone who wants one! I still can't quite believe it when people commission a piece.

You have created some interesting garden installations; what inspires your exterior designs? Inspiration comes in many forms, so the installations aren’t necessarily inspired by the landscapes they end up in. Site-specific installations are a different matter; some of the installations I’m creating for Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia are very much influenced by the natural setting they go into.

TL: What are the key factors that must be taken into consideration when designing for an outdoor space? The usual things, such as scale, flora, fauna - and climate. It’s key that we take on board a client's wishes. The art Installations are much freer in that you can take risks and experiment.

TL: What has been your most memorable design commission? A memorable piece was one in a house on the Algarve. I’d just finished the installation and realised that the ceiling plate was the wrong finish, which was the client’s choice. I told the client that I wanted to make it again - at my own expense. He was slightly bewildered but when I returned with the new piece, he could see why I’d done it and was delighted. He commissioned another two pieces!

TL: What designers do you admire? I admire so many artists and designers - too many to list. Some are famous and some are unknown. I feel sad that art and design has been tainted, like everything else, by the celebrity curse. All this peacocking is an awful waste of time. Part of my work is to encourage young people to appreciate that this is really a vocation - money and fame are very low on the agenda. It’s a privilege to be working in a field that one loves.

How important is the use of colour in lighting design? Colour in lighting is mostly gopping! It’s used so much today simply because we have the technology to create multi coloured luminaires. To really understand colour, I feel one should look at painting; many artists have spent their life juxtaposing subtle hues to create visual poetry. I would love to do a sabbatical with a lighting designer for theatre.

Given the choice, what materials do you prefer to work with? I have no preference. I use materials, processes and products to help bring to fruition my ideas. I know I’m a bit of a dinosaur and need to go back to school. I try to explain to my children how lucky they are to be in a

CONTACTwww.brucemunro.co.uk

classroom learning new things every day. School really is wasted on the young!

TL: In your opinion, what’s the current status of the lighting industry in the UK? The project lighting has been tough over the last few years with fewer large projects but we are seeing some green shoots; commissioned pieces, sculptures and installations are flourishing. I try not to worry too much about what the future holds; the important thing is to keep focused, look after colleagues, clients, and suppliers and keep positive.

TL: What do you think the future holds for the lighting industry? Hopefully the future's bright - and preferably white not orange.

TL: Finally, can you sum up why is lighting is so important to you? Lighting helps me understand what life is about.

he major lighting retailers have this year announced price hikes of 35-70 per cent for fl uorescent lamps, with further increases planned for next year. Why such unprecedented rises? The answer lies in the rare earth element (REE) phosphor,

which is used in fl uorescent lamps.China, which controls 95 per cent of the world’s supply of REEs, has reduced its export supply in order to protect its diminishing reserves. This has had a direct impact on fl uorescent lamp supply, forcing prices up. With electricity prices also rising dramatically, the growing fi nancial burden of simply keeping the lights on is becoming a big issue for UK business.

Phosphor shortageThe trend of rising fl uorescent lamp prices is likely to continue. Lobbying from the major Western powers has persuaded China to keep exports of REEs for 2011 on par with last year’s levels. However, because the new quota for exports has been amended to include ferroalloys, which contain rare earth metals, EU offi cials and traders suggest that it is effectively a decrease in REE exports. The obvious solution is to seek new sources of REEs. However, extracting reserves from countries like the US, Australia, Russia, India and Malaysia is unlikely to become viable before 2013.

Volatile energy pricesThe problem of rising lamp prices is worsened by the volatility of global energy markets, which has led to a rise in wholesale energy costs. This has driven up electricity prices – by as much as 60 per cent in some cases. As a result, organisations are looking for a way to stabilise their lighting spend, instead of being buffeted by market forces. Boosting energy effi ciency on-site is by far the most pro-active response to the crisis, and selecting retrofi t solutions can help to keep costs to a minimum.

Boosting energy efficiencyEnergy-effi cient lamps with long life spans provide the best defence to price increases in both electricity bills and replacement lamp costs. Good-quality T5 lamps have a life expectancy of 20,000 hours, and organisations can expect to use up to 65 per cent less energy by using T5 lamps.

Quicker paybacksMany organisations remain risk-averse and unwilling to undertake the cost of a lighting upgrade. However, it is a false economy to leave in place old, energy-wasting lamps – especially now that retrofi t converters allow the new T5 lamps to be slotted into existing light fi ttings, and 2D CFLs can be replaced with LED equivalents.Taking into account lamp price increases and rising electricity prices, payback periods for some retrofi t lighting solutions have dropped dramatically – by as much as 25 per cent. On an energy-effi cient lighting conversion project that previously paid for itself in three years, customers can now expect payback in just two years and three months. In future, it is likely that prices for both energy and lamps will only rise. My advice to businesses is to avoid further delays in their decision-making process, and start the upgrade to newer, more effi cient lighting now.

TEXT: EUGENE COSTELLOTEXT: EUGENE COSTELLOLearning KurvWhen City-based international corporate and commercial law fi rm Clyde & Co wanted a solution for lighting small, cellular offi ces for its lawyers, it turned to a boutique, home-grown British success story

uture Designs is an agency of designers and manufacturers of lighting products for the fi t-out market, and has a

separate design division that develops bespoke products. Both divisions worked together on the Clyde & Co project.

Founder and MD, David Clements explains: 'We are 20 years old this year. I founded the company after 12 years working for another lighting company. We started out in Croydon,

then seven or eight years ago moved out to Edenbridge in Kent, where our head offi ce is. The manufacture takes place at a plant in Mitcham, and the assembly is carried out here in Edenbridge. We also have a sales offi ce at Canary Wharf.'

When the term ‘boutique’ is suggested, Clements demurs. 'While we are no multinational, we do have 75 to 80 employees, from designers to offi ce staff to factory and metal-workers - so I think we are a little more than boutique!'

Future Designs, says Clements, works on high-end projects: 'We are at the top end of the market in terms of quality, price and prestige, and do most of our work in the City. We are mainly in the high-end offi ce market, and tend not to go into retail environments – I’m not sure why, just we don’t tend to know the market and I suppose you specialise and build up contacts in one sector.'

With regard to Clyde and Co, Clements explains that Future Designs was approached by the consulting engineer and the architect – respectively, Chapman Bathurst and GP

Bennett – who gave them a design brief. The project was challenging in that the fee-earners’ offi ces are cellular rather than one huge room. The engineer and architect had decided they wanted to illuminate the offi ces without any fi ttings in the ceiling. They developed an idea that they wanted to use the wall-mounted cabinets above the lawyers’ desk to house fi ttings on top to throw light out and across the ceiling.

'This would give general ambient lighting throughout the space,' Clements explains. And beneath the cabinets, Future decided to have a strip of LEDs that would allow the lawyer to sit at his or her workstation without ever fi nding themselves working in their own shadow.

So these were the primary considerations for the system that Future designed and developed. The fi rst challenge

says: 'With what we’ve provided, you only need to get to the top of a cabinet to replace lamps and so it’s a very low-maintenance system.'

As for the technical solution to this highly specific project, Clements explains that the lamp for the uplighter sits inside an semi-circular aluminium reflector that has been coated with an epoxy powder coating to maximise reflectiveness.

Clements is justifiably proud of Future Designs’ inventive and creative solution for Clyde & Co – and has a warning for his competitors: 'We have received a Certificate of Registration of Design from the Patent Office for Kurv. So if someone reads about this and decides to copy it we have some recourse against that eventuality. We can’t stop someone adapting it but it does at least prevent direct copying.

'We are determined to protect our designs to the best of our means. We’re enormously proud of our design, and we have put a lot of time and resource into it so it would be galling if someone came along and did a cheaper copy without the enormous costs of research and design that represents our investment. Our research and development department costs us hundreds of thousands of pounds, and it is for our benefit, and the benefit of our clients – not of our competitors!'

And Kurv – which is calculated to be 17 per cent more efficient than traditional lighting systems – is, Clements hopes, not to be a one-off: 'We hope that other clients will look at what we have achieved here and recognise that it is a revolutionary way of lighting cellular space,' he says.

'This goes away from the norm and, without reinventing the wheel, we think we have come up with an ingenious solution to the issues around cellular offices.

with the uplighting was to ensure that the ceiling was evenly illuminated. Although Clements is masterly at making it sound perfectly straightforward, the team worked assiduously to get the product, named Kurv, right: 'We devised seven mock-ups on computer for various solutions that would reduce as much shadow across the ceiling as possible. We then went ahead and built the two most promising versions so that we could test them and compare the results to our theoretical findings. And the most efficient of those two was the one that we then ran throughout the project. The point about software-created models is that they will tell you most of what you want to know, but there is no substitute for the real thing.'

It was, says Clements, a great challenge in that the normal systems and conventions that the design team adhere to had to be torn up as Future wanted to do something very different for this high-end law firm. One of the results that Clements is especially pleased with is that it gives magnificent illumination from outside the building from twilight through the hours of darkness.

'Normally, when you look at a building at night-time,' says Clements, 'you see the glare of harsh overhead lighting reflecting down on you. This solution has created a subtle wash of colours across the ceiling, which creates a very attractive effect and supports the prestigious ethos of this leading international law firm.'

As for the specific challenges of this job, Clements explains that normally in an office there will be a false ceiling with a 600mm light fitting that sits in the middle of that ceiling. With small cellular offices, such as those on this project, it's a problem for the lighting designer to create lighting that will disperse in a uniform manner. He

he link between light and wellbeing in hospitals has been apparent for many decades. In the UK, the development of

modernist architecture was explicitly linked with the notion of healthiness, and a central part of this was allowing for a greater infiltration of daylight into buildings. It is no coincidence that some of the most notable modernist buildings in the UK – including the Pioneer Health Centre, Peckham; Finsbury Health Centre; and the De La Warr Pavilion, Bexhill-on-Sea – are directly associated with healthy living. Lighting conditions were central to this and remain so to this day.

Yet artificial lighting is still a fundamental part of designing hospital interiors; making them functional, efficient amenities, but also providing a warm, invigorating and stimulating environment. There is a growing awareness that the lighting of a medical environment not only assists with the treatment and recuperation of patients, but also greatly improves the efficiency and efficacy of hospital workers.

Recently-constructed healthcare buildings continue the tradition of placing natural light at the core of the design. The Carema Healthcare Centre in Stockholm, Sweden, for example, has interior spaces bathed in sunlight. The architect, Swedish practice TAF created both treatment rooms and waiting areas that have large windows and a uniformly white colour scheme – along with a modular motif for walls and furniture, which recalls bandages and sticking plasters – that lets the light infiltrate every area of the building. The light fittings in the building are either unobtrusively sunk into the ceiling or hang in organically rounded shapes that emit soft light, mimicking the effect of natural sunlight.

The CircleBath hospital by Foster + Partners in the city of Bath, also lets natural light flood into its central atrium: a design strategy intended to create a sense of openness and tranquillity within the building, which is set in the Somerset countryside. Large circular skylights allow light to pour in, and are surrounded by long, hanging pleated translucent textiles that snake through the atrium to create a soft, diffused light for the interior.

While the provision of daylight is crucial,

hospitals are 24-hour buildings that place very high demands on their lighting systems. Apart from being clinical environments, hospital are also frequently large works of infrastructure that incorporate areas for precise, sterile work, comforting rest and recuperation spaces, and also require the efficient movement of huge numbers of people every day and night. In the US, for example, healthcare institutions pay almost £5.8bn per year in energy costs, and, on average, 18 per cent of every facilities’ electricity bill is spent on lighting.

Clearly this intense requirement for lighting priovision is a major consideration in allocating a hospital’s resources. One

answer to reducing the costs of this, while also potentially improving the lighting conditions, is the greater use of LED systems. British company MHA Lighting, for example, has developed an LED unit specifically for medical environments, where financial considerations and energy efficiency are paramount. Significantly, these units have a 60,000-hour life span, meaning lamps will not have to be changed for around seven years, thus greatly reducing the need for costly routine maintenance. MHA’s managing director, Tom Harrison said: ‘Not only can the NHS save money on operational costs for routine light maintenance, but LED’s burn 20 per cent of the energy of traditional fluorescents.’ These units also address another major concern of hospital lighting: infection control. As fully-sealed units, they reduce the amount of bacteria that can be harboured in the joints of other fittings.

Yet efficiency and cleanliness are not the

only benefits of modern medical lighting systems. They can also introduce elements of relaxation, or even joy, into the often-stressful experience of hospital visits. At the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Harlow for example, Philips Lighting was commissioned to develop a lighting system for its CT and MRI scanning facilities. The company used Ambiscene, a system that allows the lighting conditions to change, almost endlessly, in colour, intensity or tone. Whilst the LED cove lighting has been positioned around the perimeter of the ceiling in the examination room, the lighting can be controlled by a touch pad facility located in the observation room next door. Through this, variable coloured light can be created to relax the patients during their examinations. It can also help to communicate with the patient by using a specific colour to give a signal, such as a red light instructing a patient to hold their breath. Such strategies can be particularly helpful for children, who may find medical procedures especially bewildering or unsettling.

Philips has also worked on the redevelopment of the Phoenix Children’s Hospital in the US. In this case, Kinetics Lighting’s fixtures have been designed to create an immersive environment for the young patients and their families. The use of warm, but variable-coloured lighting makes the interior of the building blend in comfortably with the surrounding desert environment.

Perhaps most intriguingly, though, it has recently been shown that lighting can have an even more direct effect on the wellbeing of staff and patients in hospitals. A lighting system that kills bacteria, including superbugs such as MRSA and C difficile, has recently completed trials at Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland. The LED technology, which can be used alongside or instead of traditional lighting, continually disinfects the air and exposed surfaces to certain wavelengths of visible light. The two-year trial showed that the high-intensity narrow-spectrum (HINS) light was around 60 per cent more effective in killing bacteria and fungi than cleaning alone, but was harmless to staff and patients. ‘There are very few disinfectant technologies that are dangerous to microbes but benign to humans,’ says Prof John Anderson of Strathclyde University in Glasgow, where the technology was developed.

Even at a time when hospital resources are being stretched to their limits across the world, it seems that lighting will occupy an even more central place in the design of medical environments. A carefully chosen system can reduces costs, improve the experience for patients and staff alike, and even help in the fight against disease.

Not only can the NHS save money on operational costs for routine light maintenance, but LED’s burn 20 per cent of the energy of traditional fluorescents

he rise in energy effi cient lighting is undoubtedly a good thing. For the environment it means less electricity and subsequently fewer carbon

emissions. For homeowners and businesses it means reduced energy costs and the peace of mind that comes from a smaller carbon footprint.

There is, however, a spanner in the works. Because all newly-produced lamps contain harmful gases such as mercury, there are problems disposing of them. In large quantities, mercury is dangerous to the environment and anyone that comes into contact with it – especially if the lamps are disposed of at landfi ll sites.

With the imminent phasing out of incandescent lamps and their subsequent replacement with gas discharge lamps (GDLs) - low energy bulbs and fl uorescent tubes – the number of lamps going to waste will inevitably increase. For businesses that require an overhaul of the lighting on their premises this represents a signifi cant problem.

Help is fortunately at hand from a number of organisations, which are backed by the Government’s Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive – a measure that was introduced in January 2007 to reduce the overall waste created by electrical companies and manufacturers. Under the directive, the recycling of electrical and electronic waste is funded by the producer. One company operating under such measures is Recolight, a not-for-profi t organisation for the lighting industry.

Since its launch in 2006, many leading names in the lighting industry have signed up to the scheme. It was founded with the help of Philips, GE, Osram, and Havells Sylvania, and has established an infrastructure for the collection of lamps as well as fi nancing effi cient, reliable and environmentally sound solutions for lamp recycling. To date they have recycled over 100 million lamps, which equates to more than one third of a tonne of mercury that would otherwise have ended up in landfi ll.

Recolight isn’t the only company offering the service. Elsewhere Lumicom, another not-for-profi t producer compliance scheme, is helping its members meet their obligations under the WEEE regulations.

The scheme has the backing of the Environment Agency and deals with producers selling into non-household market, so is of particular use to commercial property owners. The primary obligation of producers is to ensure environmentally sound disposal of the WEEE products for which they are

Lumicom states that a producer, and as such the scheme, is responsible for discarded lighting equipment as follows:

• If the luminaires were installed before August 13, 2005, then the producer who is supplying the replacement products is responsible• If the waste luminaires are not being replaced then the end-user is responsible• If the discarded luminaire was sold on or after August 13, 2005 then the producer who originally supplied it is responsible• If the producer cannot be traced the end- user is responsible

Producers are obliged to mark their equipment so that users can easily identify which producer (if any) is responsible when it comes to disposal.

responsible, more specifi cally to provide for the cost of their receipt, treatment and disposal. With so many boxes to tick, the process can become quite bureaucratic, something which Lumicom tries to alleviate.

‘We provide initial guidance, visits, audits and telephone advice’ says Ernest Magog of Lumicom.

‘We’ve set up a compliance scheme that collects monthly contributions from producers, in order to pay the costs of the receipt, treatment, recovery and environmentally sound disposal of the WEEE for which our members are responsible.’

With just under a year until 40W and 25W clear lamps are phased out, along with clear halogens under 60lm, commercial premises are well advised to begin the phasing out process. As it stands, the burden of doing so isn’t quite as heavy as some would think.

INJECTING TRUE CHARACTER INTO YOUR SPACE

THE 4TH MONKEY - Mind Your Own Business Stunning laser-cut Perspex wall luminarie with handcrafted tassels

The three wise monkeys are a pictorial maxim. Some simply take the proverb as a reminder not to be snoopy, nosy and gossipy. “See no Evil, Hear no Evil, Speak no Evil” perfectly encapsulates the mantra “Mind Your Own Business” and is also used to describe someone who does not want to be involved in a situation. Historically, and found today in every Japanese temple, there was a fourth monkey, covering his crotch, who symbolises the principle of “Do no Evil” which was banned from Europe in the Middle Ages. Kandabi wanted to pay homage to it, so it has been abstractly depicted in this piece by a deliberate placement of the light source in the middle monkey’s abdomen.

esigners wanting to make an impact, to set a tone, or encourage a particular state of mind generally use mood lighting to do so. In itself it

is a vague term that can be interpreted in many ways. That said, its purpose is effectively to add an extra

sprinkling of character to a room, project a feeling of calm, visual drama or frivolity and fun. Some relate it to therapy spas or lounges, others night clubs or restaurants. ‘I generally relate mood lighting to the use of diffused and softer lighting to create an almost meditational environment, introducing an experience of disconnection,’ Mott MacDonald's lighting specialist, Chuan Lim explains.

Having originally derived from cinematography, it’s now evolved into a catchy phrase widely adopted within the industry. ‘Alfred Hitchcock is an iconic English filmmaker and producer who used lighting artistry to instil a given mood to his audience to great effect,’ Eva Hammerson, head of design at Kandabi comments. ‘Just as in film production where the lighting of the set helps to achieve the images desired by the director, in the interiors world mood lighting is a crucial layer. It is part of any overall lighting scheme used to achieve a desired atmosphere in the space.’

Although commercially, mood lighting has been used

for quite some time, its appeal has become much more widespread. It has opened a new dimension of design to explore for homeowners, particularly as technologies improve, with more and more designers taking advantage of its mood–inducing properties. However this is an area that hasn’t yet fully embraced the benefits or explored the full options these lighting schemes offer, as Hammerson explains: ‘Most residential interior designers, unless working on very contemporary projects, are still perhaps a bit reluctant to fully embrace mood lighting and to incorporate LED’s into a period property lighting scheme. This is a true missed opportunity, since the right type and use of mood lighting can greatly enhance any style of property or architectural setting.’

It’s also become commonplace for mood lights to become integrated into modern offices, with

In the mood? It’s a well-known fact that lighting plays a large part in the design of a room, but how does it affect the mood?

Eva Hammerson shares three key differences between mood and conventional lighting:

Perhaps more than any other type of illumination used in a home interior scheme, mood lighting has the potential to create a true differentiation point between one interior space and the next.

Unlike most conventional systems, mood lighting’s true raison d’être is less of a functional one, and more of an aesthetic and mood enhancing solution.

Unlike most conventional lighting, when combining some careful planning and a little imagination, mood lighting can look high-end and expensive at a cost-effective price.

some employers relishing low ambience and believing in the power of these lights within an environment. Lin shared a perfect example of the reception for NESTA, in Plough Place. The designer has installed a system with strong accents, that dynamically change every hour to provide a mood of perpetual evolution.

As in other areas of design, colour plays a large part in the effectiveness of mood lighting. There’s much science to back up the power different shades can play on the mind, evoking emotions and associations unobtrusively, which explains the use of mood lighting within treatment centres and hospices. In fact Chromotherapy, a form of complimentary therapy which involves light, has proved to be increasingly popular. June McLeod, founder of Colours of the Soul explains: ‘The use of coloured lighting will create a far more intense reaction to persons using the space and in the environment than any other use of colour. Therefore careful and considered use of coloured lighting is essential and needs to be installed under the supervision and overseen by a colour professional. They will be aware of the reactions - both negative and positive -

June McLeod, founder of Colours of the Soul, shares her suggestion on the properties of coloured light:

Blue: moody blue shades can accentuate feelings of unhappiness, however lighter tones will enhance a feeling of tensions easing and inner peacefulness.

Red: any underlying tensions or frustrations between people will surface under a red light, so when in doubt leave it out. It’s not a great colour for an all-female workforce, especially prior to and during menstruation.

Orange: this colour is thought to bring to the surface relationship emotions, good or bad.

Yellow: contrary to popular belief, yellow is great for clear thinking, but less is more with this colour.

Green: the darker the shade, the more introverted people will become. This colour is also said to encourage one to eat at more regular intervals.

White: clear, pure white light is great for use in most areas. That said, it shows up hidden agendas so maybe not so great for offi ce politics if used throughout a building.

Purple: anyone suffering from any type of feeling low or depression will fall unwell under this colour, as negative thoughts manifest under dark purple. It must be used sparingly.

that coloured lighting within the environment will accentuate.’ Advanced control systems have encouraged marked

improvements in the transition colours, dimming and pre-setting of scenes. Developments in light sources have also seen advancements in creating a mood, in particular LED luminaires, which have a longer life span and smaller form factors when measured against more traditional incandescent bulbs which can appear bitty. It’s thought that, along with many other sectors of the industry, LEDs will phase out older lamps as their energy effi cient properties are a huge draw. The diodes also, when used in trip form, work particularly well with this area of the industry as strips allow less stark, direct light and allow a gentler glow.

With numerous outstretching arms reaching a multitude of sectors even if just by the fi ngertips, and with properties even more far reaching, mood lighting is an area of the sector that fails to be ignored. As with all pockets of lighting, developments will be fast and on-going, rapidly evolving to ensure that schemes offer energy-effi cient solutions that are as striking as they are green, purple, blue or red for that matter.

long with music, lighting is one of the most important aspects of a thriving and successful drinking venue. Be it a traditional pub

atmosphere, overly modern bar or vibrant nightclub, illumination is key to the interior design and experience.

Dimmed halogens can provide small private areas, such as booths or tables with a relaxing atmosphere to unwind, while LEDs and DMX control systems can change colours to create different scenarios to emphasis the club or customers’ mood.

Jerry Hodkinson, marketing manager at Andy Thornton clarifi ed the importance of fl exibility to meet the demands of customers: ‘Lighting installations need to provide the versatility required by modern bars that are now open from morning till late at night. This means being able to control light output, creating strong natural light for the daytime, then ambient for the evening. It will have a major impact on the success of a bar or club.

‘Atmosphere is created by the careful combination of low energy task lighting in working areas, such as the bar and toilets, with ambient lighting offered by decorative fi ttings, such as table lamps and low hung pendants in areas such as lounges.’

Though revellers may be oblivious to the lighting as they party the night away, fewer things have more impact on a bar or nightclub, suggests Emma Morgan

It will have a major impact on the success of a bar or club

AThere is a general eclectic aesthetic in interior design

that is carried over into lighting, with styles jumbled together. Andy Thornton recently supplied a selection of decorative fi ttings from different periods and styles for one of JD Whetherspoon’s latest pubs, the Cooper Rose in Sunderland. A combination of vintage industrial pendants, mosaic pendants, elegant drum shades, prismatic shades and old distressed street lights created an extensive mix.

Hodkinson has begun to notice changes in the way fi ttings are used. He said: ‘The actual bar fi ttings themselves are being made more of a focal point with illuminated counters and back bar lighting creating more of a feature of the optics and fi ttings. We have installed a

a relaxed ambience. The client didn’t want anything too modern. We agreed on using as much kinetic light as possible, incorporating the warmth of the light from working fi replaces and adding wall candle sconces as well as candles on every dining table.’

The project took six months from concept to completion, and featured mostly decorative fi ttings purchased from second-hand and antique shops. Weir added: ‘As a quirky added touch, we made sure that each individual pendant was slightly different, but with the same fi nish to ensure a seamless look. We attempted to re-use as many original fi ttings as possible in the lighting scheme.’

The use of incandescent light ensured a very soft quality while Andy Thornton supplied the picture lights and The Light Corporation provided the downlights inside the window reveals.

Weir continued: ‘Low voltage halogens were used in the wall niches as well as over the bar area for the necessary task lighting. Interestingly, such a warm effect would now be a lot more diffi cult to achieve within current Building Regulations.’

Since its opening, the pub has gained a loyal following

number of contemporary bars with lighting incorporated in the counters behind glass and perspex panels, such as at the Copthorne Hotel in Sheffi eld.’

The rise in hotel bars across the Middle East has had an effect on lighting design too. Due to strict licensing laws forbidding bars to have windows, interior lighting in bars and nightclubs located in the UAE is non-style infl uenced. Andy Thornton’s interior design and contracts team recently refurbished the Nell Gwynne bar at Dubai Marina Hotel. Oak cabinets were created with leaded glass panels that were fi lled with antique bottles and had built-in lights to replicate sunlight and complement the bar’s gothic theme.

For many, visiting a bar or club is the culmination of a long week at work and a chance to unwind in a friendly and relaxed environment. With this in mind, it is essential that a customer should be made to feel welcome, relaxed and excited by their surroundings. A lead designer at The Light Corporation said: ‘When adding lighting to a bar or club it is these factors that defi ne a great experience, and so much of this experience is determined by using effective and interesting lighting techniques.’

There is an emphasis on bar lighting to be non-intrusive, with LEDs being a key product to subtly light focal points of a room or behind the bar. Yet club lighting can be an entirely different matter. The Light Corporation designer added: ‘The success of most exclusive nightclubs around the world depends on them offering an experience like no other. Frequent use of RGB lighting with spotlighting and linear applications can add to the mood of the evening, especially when changing colour in sync with music being played.

‘Creating beams of light by installing narrow beam uplighting in the fl oor or behind long seating areas can bring an interesting dimension to the space of a room, while using pockets of light that are carefully positioned to accent specifi c features, such as a DJ booth allow other more striking lighting effects to come through.’

Frequented by elderly gents looking for a leisurely environment and some real ale, the traditional British pub is somewhat of a landmark of English heritage. One pub that has been centre of much speculation has recently been pushed into the limelight - The Punch Bowl in Mayfair, London.

Owned by British fi lm director, Guy Ritchie, The Punch Bowl, emphasises tradition through its use of low-level lighting. Rebecca Weir, design director at Light IQ and designer of the Punch Bowl lighting scheme said: ‘The client was looking to create an authentic and low key pub with soft traditional lighting. The lighting design was intended to generate a feeling of comfort and to achieve

and received a great deal of press interest - due mainly to the presence of some of the young royals and their friends, for whom it’s their local haunt.

‘In pubs, as a general rule, lighting is normally warmer, with a low colour temperature, to create a relaxed atmosphere for a casual environment suitable for bar stools and wing back chairs,’ said Weir. ‘The lighting design industry has had to adjust to the new regulations imposed in regards to energy effi ciency over the last few years. Lighting manufacturers have been fi ghting to catch up and be at the front of the market for energy effi cient products. This has had a direct impact on all commercial refurbishments and new builds, especially in the hospitality industry, which always needs to have a fresh approach and keep ahead of interior trends.’

ights and decorations will be going up in towns across the UK as the nation gears up for another Christmas. In recent years

the festive period has been tinged with an air of gloom as the country struggles to emerge from a recession, which has decimated high street sales and hit consumers in the wallet.

Traditionally, the festive period has been a time when communities pull together and unite in the face of national and regional problems, and at the heart of the festivities is the town centre. Christmas light switch-ons are met with varying degrees of fanfare, depending on which X-Factor runner up, the local council has secured to press the button. That of course is the tip of the iceberg – in reality, the lights and decorations create the festive atmosphere of high streets and shopping malls, building a sense of community.

L DesignWhen approaching the design of a display concept it’s important to consider what you’re trying to achieve. In shopping centres, an effective lighting display helps to slow down shoppers and increase dwell time in the centre. Councils tend to prefer the fantastical, to create a wow factor and attract visitors to the high streets.

In today’s modern town centres, there are a number of challenges. Many are a mix of traditional, historic and modern buildings. While the ornate design of older buildings is enhanced and emphasised by decorative lighting, modern buildings tend to lend themselves to more contemporary schemes with bright colours prominent in the display.

It’s not surprising that the trend in most European countries in recent years has been for traditional Christmas displays, with a

modern twist. Warm white LEDs are strikingly similar to the traditional Christmas light with its sparkly glow. According to Russell Brown of MK Illumination, the UK is no different in it's decision: ‘Over the past two to three years we have seen a defi nite return to traditional colours and motifs that replicate Christmas.

‘When LED was fi rst introduced, there was a transitional period where ultra-modern blue and white lights were the colours to have, but this became too far detached from the spirit of Christmas. Now the fashion is returning towards more traditional gold and warm-white light and a re-invention of traditional motifs.

‘This, in our opinion, is due to the fact that in turbulent times people gain comfort from being transported back to the good old days. Traditions give a sense of comfort and security. Also when it’s cold outside, people don’t necessarily want a wintry lighting display when they go shopping. Instead they want a display which makes them forget about the cold and makes them feel that bit warmer.’

With this in mind, the company has developed a new collection which features motifs that are commonly associated with Christmas, such as stars, reindeers and trees. These have been interpreted with a modern design and brought up to date with contemporary elements, such as aluminium frames, crystals and baubles.

‘Clients tend to be more experimental for outdoor schemes’ adds Brown. ‘Brilliant bright light tends

to be popular because it helps to attract people’s attention from a distance.’

In the future Brown expects shopping centres to experiment with outdoor schemes. Shopping centres have realised that they have to do everything they can to attract customers, and are using festive lights as a new marketing and branding tool.

‘A building’s external architecture is the fi rst thing people see, so it should not be overlooked as a way

of attracting customers. Curtain lights, drape lights and motifs can all help to emphasise a building’s façade.’

You would think that a company trading predominantly in the fi nal four months of the year would struggle. In reality, MK celebrated its fi fteenth birthday in September, and continues to go from strength to strength. Russell Brown puts the company’s success down to its approach.

‘Every client has a vision of what they want their display to look like, but as a general rule of thumb we always carry out background research on the location of the display and, in the case of shopping centres and other commercial buildings, take into consideration its style and architecture. By doing this we can ensure that a lighting display doesn’t only look great but complements its surrounding environment.’

ProductsThe range of products used by companies such as MK is fairly diverse, though many are switching to LED-based lights for their environmental credentials. The consideration that goes into selecting what is specifi ed also goes beyond aesthetics. The performance and durability is equally as important – most if not all the fi ttings will be switched on for up to three months, and have to endure unforgiving conditions.

MK has in recent years been responsible for some of the most spectacular installations in Europe, particularly in Switzerland where projects in Basel, Zurich and Bern transformed the cityscape. Closer to home, MK has fi tted one the country’s largest displays in Manchester.

In total, 380,000 LEDs and 55,080m of lighting were used to decorate the city, taking a team of 25 people 2500 man-hours in total to install the display in the run up to the switch-on. Over 50,000 LEDs were installed on other decorations and motifs, including 330 column-mounted and 28 across-street displays. The scheme also featured two giant seven-metre stags located in Piccadilly Gardens. The display lights up the main shopping areas of Manchester, including Deansgate, Market Street, Albert Square, Oxford Street and Corporation Street.

‘When designing the scheme, we decided to use a mixture of white and warm-white LEDs as this colour combination complements the architecture of the city perfectly’ says Brown, ‘it provides a warm welcoming feel on cold winter nights.

‘We also decided to use a lot of 3D elements within the scheme to provide maximum visual impact during the daytime. When you consider that the city is at it’s busiest during daylight hours it is important that it looks equally as good during the day as it does in the evening.’

For MK, the LED has been the standard for the last three years. The company is now also integrating organic, recyclable materials that are water- and weather-proof, as well as resistant to light. As clients become more aware of environmental issues, the installer must adapt.

Says Brown: ‘Environmental issues are an increasing consideration when designing and producing commercial Christmas decoration schemes.

‘In the past, excellent lighting coverage and value for money were the key considerations during the tender process. Although these remain key factors today, our clients have become more and more aware of their environmental responsibilities and are demanding schemes that offer excellent energy and cost savings.’

Naturally technology is also playing its part. The evolution of LED technology has allowed manufacturers to create a new softness to the light, producing a softer and more traditional light. DMX lighting is also starting to make a real impact as clients demand more animation from their schemes. By installing a DMX controller, a lighting scheme can be programmed to change a display’s effects, modifying colour sequence, flash, speed and intensity according to the client’s preference.

Marketing evolution? The plight of the nation’s retailers has been well documented. High street sales are, at best, in a

precarious state as a result of the economic squeeze. The retail industry is more competitive than it has ever been. Shopping centres and high streets need to be more appealing than their neighbours, and have displays that aren’t replicated elsewhere.

Subsequently, festive lighting should be viewed as an essential component of the marketing mix, and one that can enhance customer experience and visual brand identity. ‘This means that everything needs to be considered to make the product more effective’ says Brown, ‘from the colour of the lights to whether they should flash or blink.’

At a time of year when consumers are at their most frivolous, shopping centres and councils have to recognise the positive effect a festive lighting display can have on footfall.

lentrool is a small village in Galloway Forest Dark Park Sky in southern Scotland- and it’s the only village within the boundaries of

the UK’s only dark sky park to be approved by the IDA. It aims to make the village dark sky-friendly by changing all lighting to LED fi ttings with zero upward light at zero degrees and beyond, while striving to reduce light pollution, conserving energy and nature.

Jim Paterson, director of Lighting Consultancy and Design Service (LCADS), pioneered the fi rst UK dark sky master plan for the Galloway Forest Park. The development of an external lighting management plan covering domestic, commercial and public lighting was an essential element in achieving the IDA award. In addition, the plan contained forward recommendations to replace all of the old low-pressure sodium lighting. The village is located within the park’s buffer zone, where the plan recommends environmental zone E1 stray light limits.

Galloway Forest was awarded Dark Sky Park status in November 2009 by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA) and conditions are about to get even darker - without switching off street lights

The low down

The village, complete with a primary school and post offi ce, was built in the late 1950s to house Forestry Commission workers and rangers and it’s seen many changes since then. The recent closure of the primary school triggered the implementation of a village regeneration initiative.

Upgrading the street lighting to comply with the strict light control recommended in the management plan was put high on the agenda. There is nothing new about using full cut-off lighting, but when the plan was written more than two years ago, there were only two fl at glass lanterns utilising LED sources available. Both could achieve zero intensity at and above the horizontal providing G6 glare restrictions. However, in addition to achieving G6, the Ruud Ledway Road luminaire was the only LED which had been provided with an IDA dark sky fi xtures award, so it was chosen for the master plan concept study.

30 LED provided, at that time, about the same average and minimum values as a single 35 watt low-pressure sodium source.

During the period of waiting for the IDA approval for the Forestry Commission Scotland application, an electronic visualisation of the village was developed by LCADS to show the night time comparison between the present low pressure sodium lighting and what could be achieved by retrofitting Ruud Ledway Road luminaires on to the existing electricity distribution poles. Spacing distances of up to 42m is a common feature with wooden electricity poles and there was a concern that minimum luminance values would not be achieved.

The before-and-after visualisations were constructed as a virtual reality drive around half of the village’s roads and was able to demonstrate to the Community Council and the Forestry Commission that the new lighting would reduce light into upper floor front bedroom windows. The overriding consensus of the residents has been that this reduction would be a benefit.

Since writing the master plan, there has been an explosion in LED development and many more LEDs have come on the market. So, instead of switching lights off, the local authority wanted to see the implication of retrofitting luminaires from other manufacturers.

A test area was agreed with Dumfries and Galloway Council and the comparison test grids were established by LCADS. For each luminaire, a traditional straight road maximum spacing test was undertaken, together with a section of site-specific curved roadway to establish the usual average and minimum values. Additionally, a grid to cover an area of private garden behind the road

and a vertical grid to cover a house front from ground to chimney pot, to check front door and bedroom window values, completed the in-depth comparison study.

Apart from the traditional roadway test, which could be compared with BS EN 13201 criteria, the other grids were added as comparison reference points. One point of concern for the local authority was that dark areas at front doors may give cause for a proliferation of security spotlights.

The existing SOX and eight flat glass luminaires from different market leaders were subjected to the same geometry calculation conditions. After running 40 separate lighting calculations, the Ruud Ledway luminaire was deemed to achieve the best technical performance to suit the village’s site specific test layout. It was the only product to pass BS EN 13201 criteria for an S5 lighting objective over the test section.

The number of LEDs could be reduced to 20 and the straight road test achieved 42m. This spacing was equalled by only one other luminaire, which subsequently failed the curved road test. Bedroom window light was reduced from a calculated 2 lux from the existing lighting to 0.3 lux with the Ruud Ledway Road.

The installation is expected to be complete this month.

When the city of Lima confirmed the renovation of the Peru National Stadium, part of the brief was for an innovative lighting scheme to be introduced

A s such a prominent build, the foremost wish was for it to be an iconic structure with a recognisable design in keeping

with the mood and passion present at any football match. The creative team consisted of Claudia Paz of CAM; Cinimod Studio; and David Castañeda of Traxon. These masterminds each brought a fundamental element to the concept of the building’s interactive frontage.

Drawing on inspiration from the fast-paced changes in mood ever-present at a game, the team brought together pioneering technologies and lighting layouts to lace the facade with a mix of dancing LEDs. The scheme acts as a mirror, reflecting the mood of the audience as the fans collectively flow through emotions of excitement, boredom, disappointment and celebration; to mesmerise passersby.

Paz and Castañeda constructed onsite mock-ups, having undertaken a series of design studies, which were used to prove the merit of the system to the client. Once the system was agreed, the team was given 100 days to complete the implementation, in order to meet the Presidential inauguration of the stadium. The tight time constraints meant that all hands were needed on deck with Traxon producing customised fixtures, and E:Cue developing the mapping and content. Meanwhile Cinimod tested hardware solutions and software algorithms as they were made.

The main obstacle for Cinimod during the project was developing a bespoke, reliable solution to deliver the ambitious scheme effortlessly. This blockade was broken down by the utilisation of a transfer of technologies from related industries, which enabled the company to create a cutting-edge mood analysis system for the stadium project.

Incorporated within the scheme is a network of customised sound level meters, which are placed along the roof line of the stadium to create a dynamic map of the crowd's noise levels. This data is processed by Cinimod's hardware and software located in the main communications room of the stadium.

Also developed specifically for the project was the company’s mood analysis software, used to process the sound level data in real-time, performing a series of comparative mathematical calculations and analysis by self-calibrating algorithms. The output from the software is a ‘mood state’ that summarises the collective mood of the crowd. This ingenious software runs perpetually, constantly evaluating the mood. It communicates the determined mood state to the E:Cue lighting controller, which then sends the relevant DMX control signal to the light fixtures.

The lighting patterns have been carefully designed to accurately depict these moods. The patterns vary in colour, speed, brightness and scale – the façade can be seen to dance with joy and celebration, or recoil into a subdued and disappointed state.

Initially the equipment was tried beside a railway line to monitor its reaction to noise. Yet the ultimate test was at a match which took place at the Emirates Stadium in London. It was here that designers were able to breathe a sigh of relieve as the mood analysis worked as hoped, and the system was sent to Peru to be installed.

The external scheme was constructed to be seamlessly integrated within the architectural framework, while providing the required media framework to display lighting patterns. The

majority of the lights were laid out in fans of ‘flames’, which wrap upwards around the bulbous form of the structure, in order to work alongside the design of the frontage.

At such a large scale, the scheme necessitated an impressive array of colour and pixel addressable fittings. All of which are from Traxon Technologies, whose focus is high quality architectural LED lights. An E:Cue architectural lighting controller was linked to the LEDs to provide the required 62 universes of DMX lighting control output.

Cinimod's interactive mood analysis and the E:Cue lighting control system make up the two integral components of the system. They each work in tandem to deliver an ever-evolving and responsive lighting display on the façade.

Eking out all that’s great about the quick-paced changes within the embryonic industry, this stadium is a true celebration of the endless possibilities and the wonder to be achieved with the use of light.

LED AMENITY RANGE LAUNCHEDNVC has launched a complete range of LED amenity products.Designed to be an energy saving, low maintenance alternative to 28W 2D these fittings are ideal for use in stairwells and corridors. The range stretches from the decorative IP40 ADDISON and SWIFT fittings to the vandal resistant IP65 TENNESSEE and FRANKLIN. The entire range uses 16W LED to replace 28W LED, so substantial energy savings are assured. For greater energy savings, sensors can also be used. Unlike traditional 28W fluorescent lamps, LEDs are not adversely effected by frequent switching. This means that sensors can be installed to control LEDs with complete confidence, and to maximise energy savings they can be set to a short time delay.28W 2D light fittings are often criticized for their obtrusive lamp image. This problem too is avoided by using the NVC LED range. By using an array of multiple low-power LEDs an even and pleasing lighting effect is created.

KURV developed to be the sole source of illuminance within cellular offi ces while at the same time being hidden from view within a pelmet detail. The result is a highly effi cient, purpose designed modular unit which offers seamless indirect illuminance. DALI control gear is kept away from prying hands by a removable protection cover yet still allows for immediate tool-free fuse replacement, cutting maintenance time and costs. The simplistic design also means that lamps can be replaced without removing any other parts. Dual-purpose high refl ection and diffusion coatings ensure the maximum amount of useable light possible is emitted into the working environment, controlled by the KURV refl ector.

Unite wanted to refurbishment its buildings across the country. The architect’s first challenge was in Liverpool, chosen for its prominent position on a major route into the city. They wanted to highlight features of the building and make a big impact.

Vaio from DW Windsor was chosen for its continuous, uncomplicated lines of impressive colour. This had the additional ability of changing to any RGB colour, for example when Liverpool was hosting a home game. Vaio was used to add distinction to the lines of the building with a rainbow of changing colour.

Installation was simple and being surface mounted minimised disruption to the fabric of the building.

Vaio LED will be demonstrated in full RGB colour on DW Windsor’s stand C11 at LUXLive.
