Converting sound to microwavesIn 1973, Joseph C. Sharp, an experimental psychologist at Walter Reed Army Institute of Research performed anexperiment that was pivotal to the development of the torture equipment being shipped to Iraq today. He had James Linset up equipment in his laboratory which converted the shape of sound waves into microwave radiation that enabled him

to hear himself vocalize the names of the numbers from one to ten in his head, by-passing the mechanism of his ownears. This particular experiment was never published but is mentioned in Lin's book,Microwave Auditory Effects andApplications,published in 1978 [5].The experiment has been confirmed in US Patent 6 587 729, "Apparatus for Audibly Communicating Speech Using theRadio Frequency Hearing Effect" [6]. This patent is for an improved version of the apparatus used in the 1973laboratory experiment, issued on July 1,2003 and assigned to the Secretary of the Air Force. It provides scientificevidence that it is possible to hear threatening voices in one's head without suffering from paranoid schizophrenia. Whyhas this patent been published openly at a time when the US Government is practicing a degree of secrecy that rivalsStalin's Kremlin? I have no satisfactory answer, except to say that the apparatus in the patent has already beensuperseded by equipment that achieves the same effect by far more sophisticated means. It blocks the normal processes ofmemory and thought by remote electronic means, while at the same time supplying false, distorted and/or unpleasantmemories and suggestions by means of a process called "synthetic telepathy". The equipment that produces synthetictelepathy is sometimes referred to as "influence technology".

While voices and visions, daydreams and nightmares are the most astonishing manifestations of this weapon system, it isalso capable of crippling the human subject by limiting his/her normal range of movement, causing acute pain theequivalent of major organ failure or even death, and interfering with normal functioning of any of the human senses. Inother words, any of the tortures with which the words Guantanamo Bay have become synonymous can be achieved byremote, electronic means.

Instruments of tortureInfluence technology is also capable of persuading the subjects that then- mind is being read, that their intellectualproperty is being plundered, and can even motivate suicide or the murder of family, friends, and co-workers. During theyears of the so-called "War on Drugs" (which preceded the "War on Terrorism"), letters that the involuntary humansubjects had written or were about to receive regularly vanished from the mail, as though the government had a hugecovert operation through post offices across the country. When George Herbert Walker Bush became president (in!989),the incidence of co-worker killings in the post offices became so great that the expression "going postal" began to

replace the commonly used expression of "going crazy". The killing of co-workers in other workplaces began tocommand more media attention too [7].I estimate that the cost of imprisoning a human being in his/her own body and applying unremitting torture is US$5 000000 to $10 000 000 a year (see below).By "unremitting torture" I mean exactly that. Because there is no visible evidence left by this new torture equipmentsuch as damage to the skin, it is possible to torture the involuntary human subjects for 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.This can be done and is being done even on Christmas and Easter [8].I arrived at my estimate on the cost of testing/using electromagnetic weapons on a human subject by visiting a cable TVchannel that specializes in the sale of goods over the air 24 hours a day. I questioned the number of technical staffrequired, their working hours and salary range; also the number of back-up personnel required to prepare theprogramming for broadcast. I did not inquire about the cost of electronics and the schedule by which it is depreciated. Ihave estimated a cost for depreciation that is included in my estimate of the cost of torturing one involuntary humansubject for one year.

Torture is a labor-intensive business. What objective would justify this investment? Could it be something as insane asto rule the world by enslaving the democratic governments of the more populous countries? This objective is certainlyconsistent with the United States' disdain for, and hostility toward, the United Nations, the international conventionsand covenants it has ratified in the past and customary international law [9].On 1 March 2001, the Marine Corps announced a new non-lethal weapon, "active denial technology". It producesenormous pain by allegedly boiling the molecules of water in the human skin without damaging the skin itself. Asdescribed in an article published inNew Scientist, it employs pulsed electromagnetic radiation at a frequency of 95 GHzwith a range of about 600 meters [10]. There have been several new reports in the magazine in 2005, including onepublished in July [11], describing volunteers taking part in tests to determine how safe the Active Denial System

Abstract:A decoy and deception concept presently being considered is to remotely create the perception of noise in the

heads of personnel by exposing them to low power, pulsed microwaves. When people are illuminated with properlymodulated low power microwaves the sensation is reported as a buzzing, clicking, or hissing which seems to

originate (regardless of the person's position in the field) within or just behind the head. The phenomena occurs ataverage power densities as low as microwatts per square centimeter with carrier frequencies from 0.4 to 3.0 GHz.By proper choice of pulse characteristics, intelligible speech may be created. Before this technique may be extendedand used for military applications, an understanding of the basic principles must be developed. What is claimed is:

1. An apparatus for communicating an audio signal a(t), comprising:

an audio predistortion filter having a filter function As(f) for producing a first output signal a(t)As(t) from the audio signal a(t);

means for adding a bias A to the first output signal, to produce a second output signal a(t)As(f)+A;

a square root processor for producing a third output signal (a(t)As(f)+A).sup. 1/2 responsive to the second output signal; and

a modulator for producing a double sideband output signal responsive to the third output signal, having a carrier frequency of.omega..sub.c, and being mathematically described by (a(t)As(f)+A).sup.l/2 sin(.omega..sub.c t); and

transmitting the double sideband output signal to a demodulator, whereby the audio signal a(t) is recovered from the doublesideband output signal.

the demodulator is for converting the RF power into acoustic pressure waves.

The attempt to use the click process to encode speech has been based on the assumption that if simple

tones can be encoded, speech can be encoded as well, but this is not so. A simple tone can contain

several distortions and still be perceived as a tone whereas the same degree of distortion applied to

speech renders it unintelligible.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

In accomplishing the foregoing and related object the invention uses a modulation process with a fullysuppressed carrier and pre-processor filtering of the input to produce an encoded output. Where amplitudemodulation (AM) is employed and the pre-processor filtering is of audio speech input, intelligiblesubjective sound is produced when the encoded signal is demodulated by means of the RF Hearing Effect.Suitable forms of jgarrier suppressed modulation include single sideband (SSB) and carrier suppressedamplitude modulation (CSAM), with both sidebands present.

The invention further provides for analysis of the RE hearing phenomena based on an RF to acoustictransducer model. Analysis of the model suggests a new modulation process which permits the RF HearingEffect to be used following the transmission of encoded speech.

In accordance with one aspect of the invention the preprocessing of an input speech signal takes place with

a filter that de-emphasizes the high frequency content of the input speech signal. The de-emphasis canprovide a signal reduction of about 40 dB (decibels) per decade. Further processing of the speech signalthen takes place by adding a bias level and taking a root of the predistorted waveform. The resultant signalis used to modulated an RF carrier in the AM fully suppressed carrier mode, with single or doublesidebands.

The modulated RF signal is demodulated by an RF to acoustic demodulator that produces an intelligibleacoustic replication of the original input speech.

The RF Hearing Effect is explained and analyzed as a thermal to acoustic demodulating process. Energyabsorption in a medium, such as the head, causes mechanical expansion and contraction, and thus an acousticsignal.

When the expansion and contraction take place in the head of an animal, the acoustic signal is passed byconduction to the inner ear where it is further processed as if it were an acoustic signal from the outer ear.

The RF to Acoustic Demodulator thus has characteristics which permit the conversion of the RF energyinput to an acoustic output.

Accordingly, it is an object of the invention to provide a novel technique for the intelligible encoding ofsignals. A related object is to provide for the intelligible encoding of speech.

Another object of the invention is to make use of the Radio Frequency ("RF") Hearing Effect in theintelligible demodulation of encoded signals, including speech.

Still another object of the invention is to suitably encode a pulsed RF carrier with an amplitude modulated("AM") envelope such that the modulation will be intelligibly demodulated by means of the RF Hearing

Effect. A related object is to permit a message to be identified and understood as speech when a listenerdoes not know beforehand that the message is speech.

Other aspects of the invention will be come apparent after considering several illustrative embodiments,taken in conjunction with the drawings.

With reference to the drawings, FIG. 1 illustrates the RF to acoustic demodulation process of the invention. Ordinarily anacoustic signal A reaches the outer ear E of the head H and traverses first to the inner ear I and then to the acousticreceptors of the brain B. A modulated RF signal, however, enters a demodulator D, which is illustratively provided by themass M of the brain, and is approximated, as shown in FIG. 2, by a sphere S of radius r in the head H. The radius r of thesphere S is about 7 cm to make the sphere S equivalent to about the volume of the brain B. It will be appreciated that wherethe demodulator D, which can be an external component, is not employed with the acoustic receptors of the brain B, it canhave other forms.

The sphere S, or its equivalent ellipsoid or similar solid, absorbs RF power which causes an increase in temperature that inturn causes an expansion and contraction which results in an acoustic wave. As a first approximation, it is assumed that theRF power is absorbed uniformly in the brain. Where the demodulator D is external to the brain B, the medium and/or RFcarrier frequency can be selected to assure sufficiently uniform absorption.

For the modulated RF signal of FIG. 1, the power absorbed in the sphere S is proportional to the power waveform of themodulated RF signal. The absorption rate is characterized quantitatively in terms of the SAR (Specific Absorption Rate) inthe units of absorbed watts per kilogram per incident watt per square centimeter.

The temperature of the sphere S is taken as following the integrated heat input from the power waveform, i.e. the process isapproximated as being adiabatic, at least for short term intervals on the order of a few minutes.

The radial expansion of the sphere follows temperature and is converted to sound pressure, p(t), determined by the radialvelocity (U.sub.r) multiplied by the real part of the specific acoustic impedance (Z.sub.s) of the sphere, as indicated inequation (1), below.

The specific acoustic impedance for a sphere of 7 cm radius, on the order of the size of the brain, has a lower cut-offbreakfrequency of about 3,547 Hertz (Hz) for the parameters given for equation (1). In the speech spectrum, which is below the brain cut-off frequency, the sphere S is an acoustic filter which "rolls off", i.e.decreases in amplitude at -40 dB per decade with decreasing frequency. In addition to any other demodulation processes to beanalyzed below, the filter characteristics of the sphere will modify the acoustic signal with a 40 dB per decade slope in favor ofthe high frequencies.

Results for an AM Modulated Single Tone

An RF carrier with amplitude A.sub.c at frequency .omega..sub.c is AM modulated 100 percent with a single tone audio signal atfrequency .omega..sub. 1. The voltage (time) equation of this modulated signal is given by equation (2), below:

To find the energy absorbed in the sphere, the time integral of equation (3) is taken times absorption coefficient, K. The result isdivided by the specific heat, SH to obtain the temperature of the sphere and then multiplied by the volume expansion coefficient,Mv to obtain the change in volume. The SPL (Sound Pressure Level), in acoustic dB, is approximated as 20 log[p(t)/2E-5]. The standard acoustic reference level of2E-5 Newtons per square meter is based on a signal in air; however, the head has a water-like consistency. Therefore, thesubjective level in acoustic dB is only approximate, but sufficient for first order accuracy.

In a single tone case the incident RF power, P(t), from equation (3) has two terms as shown in equation (7), below, which are inthe hearing range.

This is converted to the acoustic pressure wave, p(t), by multiplying by the specific acoustic impedance calculated at the

two frequencies. Therefore, the resulting pressure wave as indicated in equation (8), below, becomes

The result is an audio frequency and a second harmonic at about 1/4 amplitude. Thus using an RF carrier, AM modulated by asingle tone, the pressure wave audio signal will consist of the audio tone and a second harmonic at about -6 dB, if the specific

acoustic impedances at the two frequencies are the same. However, from equation (1) the break frequency of a model 7 cmsphere is 3.547 Hz. Most of the speech spectrum is below this frequency therefore the specific acoustic impedance is reactiveand the real component is given by equation (8a), below:

Below the cutoff frequency the real part of the impedance varies as the square of the frequency or gives a boost of 40 dB perdecade. Therefore, if the input modulation signal is 1 kHz, the second harmonic will have a boost of about 4 time in amplitude,or 12 dB, due to the variation of the real part of the specific acoustic impedance with frequency. So the second harmonicpressure term in equation (8) is actually four times the power or 6 dB higher than the fundamental term. If the second harmonicfalls above the cutoff frequency then the boost begins to fall back to 0 dB. However, for most of the speech spectrum there is asever distortion and strong boost of the high frequency distortion components.

Results for Two Tone AM Modulation Analysis

Because of the distortion attending single tone modulation, predistortion of the modulation could be attempted such that theresulting demodulated pressure wave will not contain harmonic distortion. This will not work, however, because of the non-linear cross-products of two-tone modulation are quite different from single tone modulation as shown below.

Nevertheless, two-tone modulation distortion provides an insight for the design of a corrective process for a complexmodulation signal such as speech. The nature of the distortion is defined in terms of relative amplitudes and frequencies.

Equation (8b) is that of an AM modulated carrier for the two-tone case where .omega..sub.al and .omega..sub.a2 are of equalamplitude and together modulate the carrier to a maximum peak value of 100 percent. The total modulated RF signal is given byequation (8b), below:
