The Roman city of Exeter stands at the head of the estuary, and dotted along its banks are curious villages like Topsham, Starcross and Lympstone. The mud flats are home to a wide variety of wading birds. Brunel’s atmospheric railway can be found at Starcross and Sir Walter Raleigh sailed on many of his voyages from Exmouth harbour.

Situated on the High Street, The Oddfellows’ stylish and eclectic mix of old, new and

reclaimed decor is the perfect accompaniment to a mouth-watering menu of British themed cuisine given a modern twist.

All the food is expertly crafted, fresh and in-house, using locally sourced, ethical produce and free range meats. Food miles are considered as well as seasonality, meat from well treated animals and fish from sustainable and low impact fishing.

We are told they are planning to launch a banquet style dining experience for up to 10 guests this summer, which will feature a fish and sea food banquet, a local meat and a veggie/vegan banquet also. It sounds like foodie heaven.

Alongside the tantalising lunch and dinner menus visitors can quench their thirst on Cask Marque accredited local ales, Westcountry draught ciders and an extensive bottled craft beer and cider list. Also worth noting is a rather good wine list that even featured a vegan wine. This canine friendly pub will shortly be selling bottled dog ‘beer’ no less!

For those wanting something a little stronger, The Speakeasy cocktail bar upstairs is a very special place where you can enjoy a choice libation hand crafted by experts. It has the vibe of a decent London hangout.

Daytime visitors can enjoy great coffee made with locally roasted beans, and very soon can choose a loose leaf brew to go with a decadent afternoon tea or Devon Cream tea.

So, wether its just drinks or coffee, lunch, dinner or epic Sunday roast, a family meal with the kids, beers after work or a group special occasion, this place does it all, with out fuss and with style. The Oddfellows is quirky, cool, hip and interesting, the staff are warm and professional and it has something for everyone no matter your age. Try it out.

Following the success of their flagship site in Exeter, 2016 sees quirky British gastro pub The Oddfellows expand to a central location in the popular seaside resort of Exmouth.

THE EXE ESTUARYW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

Meandering down from its distant source in the rolling hills of Exmoor,

the River Exe passes south through 50 miles of beautiful Devon countryside before reaching the western limits of the Jurassic Coast at the Exe Estuary.

Eight miles long and comprising of an area approximately 2345 hectares in size, the extensive tidal mudflats of the estuary are an area long-rich in both wildlife and history. Geologically-speaking, the estuary forms a ria, an unglaciated river valley flooded by sea-level rise after the last ice age. As a result, the estuary is disproportionately large compared to the outflow of the Exe, a feature which has helped prevent sediment build-up and contributed to its importance as a historical centre of industry and commerce.

The Exe gained its name from an anglicisation of the latinisca, meaning ‘water’, simultaneously influencing the modern naming of the upriver settlement that would come to be known as Exeter, or ’fortress on the water’. The fates of the estuary and city became increasingly intertwined in medieval times, as local and international trade flowed in from the sea. As the city grew, so did the surrounding settlements, with

the eastern shore of the estuary home to the villages of Topsham, Exton and Lympstone, as well as the busy resort town of Exmouth. Contact with the far shore has long been maintained by a ferry running from the village of Starcross in the west, a service now operated by Exe to Sea Cruises from Easter until October.

Responsible management for this unique landscape falls to the Exe Estuary Management Partnership, a collection of organisations responsible for management of different aspects of the estuary space. Including but not limited to Devon County Council, Exmouth Town Council, Natural England and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the partnership works to strike a balance between ecological, social and industrial concerns in the area.

The Exe Estuary represents an internationally important habitat for migrating wading birds and stands as both a Special Protection Area and a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). Over 10,000 wildfowl and 20,000 waders are estimated to overwinter on the estuary, feeding on the mudflats at low tide before roosting in the RSPB-owned nature reserves at Bowling Green Marsh and Exminster Marshes.

A multitude of bird species are attracted to the estuarine mudflats to feed on burrowing invertebrates, including Black-tailed Godwit, Eurasian Wigeon and Ringed Plover, which in turn attract birdwatchers from around the world. In spring and autumn, a lucky few may even catch a glimpse of a fish-eating Osprey as they travel between their nesting territories to the north and their African wintering grounds.

Whatever your preferred mode of transport, the Exe Estuary Trail provides walkers and cyclists alike with the opportunity to explore the entire Exe Estuary at their own speed and attracts over 200,000 users a year. Part of Route 2 of the National Cycle Network, the 26 miles of trail are easily broken down into circular routes by making use of a number of seasonal foot ferries.

ATMOSPHERIC RAILWAYW O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

Considered one of the great engineering powerhouses of history, Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s industrial heritage

can still be seen across the UK. In the South-west, perhaps his greatest legacy is the South Devon Railway line and at the village of Starcross, a relic of his innovative approach to rail travel still stands today.

On 1st May 1844, the long-under-construction Great Western Railway (GWR) between London and Exeter was complete. Capitalising on this success, the South Devon Railway Company were quick to submit their application for extending the line onwards to Plymouth. However, the construction would not be without its complications. Beyond Newton Abbot, the topography of the West Devon countryside became increasingly steep and hilly, resulting in gradients that would challenge even the most powerful steam engines.

Fresh from his completion of the GWR, Brunel was commissioned to oversee the project. In light of the geographical challenges, he proposed a novel form of locomotion. Brunel had previously made a visit to Ireland and the Kingston and Dalkey Atmospheric Railway. Here, using Clegg and Samuda’s patented system of ’atmospheric traction‘, propulsion was provided by way of differential pressure. Static pumping stations located at regular intervals along the line would create a vacuum within sealed iron pipes, air pressure then drawing both a piston and the train forwards. This externalised form of propulsion removed the need for both an engine and fuel to be transported aboard the train, resulting in a considerable reduction in weight and a quieter, more pleasant experience for passengers.

The South Devon line was opened on 30th May 1846, with conventional engines running services to Newton Abbot from 30thDecember and installation of Brunel’s atmospheric system taking place around the regular timetable. The Starcross pumping station was the fourth in a series positioned at three-mile intervals along the line. Brick-built, the station was designed in the Italianate style and possessed distinctive square chimneys. Up to eight minutes before a

scheduled departure from the preceding station, the pumps would be stoked into life in order to build up sufficient vacuum for locomotion, which achieved service speeds of up to 40mph.

Experimental tests between Exeter and Turf began in February 1847 and based on early successes, commercial services began on 13th September of the same year Unfortunately, Brunel’s grand scheme rapidly ran into technical difficulties. The vacuum required for propulsion was retained by a continuous series of leather flaps and this organic component was quickly shown to be the weakest link in the system. The natural oils in the leather were quickly leeched away by the effects of vacuum and the weather. In order to retain its flexibility, the leather was treated with tallow, which in turn made it irresistible to rats. With widespread losses in pressure due to this rodent assault as well as numerous other problems, projected repair costs skyrocketed to an estimated £25,000 and the atmospheric railway system was finally consigned to history on 10th September 1848.

With the end of the atmospheric railway, the Starcross pumping station was put to other uses. The chimney reduced in height for safety, the building provided storage for coal merchants until 1981, while the engine room saw use as a Wesleyan Church between 1867 and 1958. After a brief spell as a youth club, the entire building was sold and reopened in 1982 as a museum celebrating its place in railway history.

Today, Brunel’s striking structure acts as the headquarters of the Starcross Fishing and Cruising Club, though its legacy lives on in the Atmospheric Railway inn, situated opposite the modern railway station.

We are a bakery… so at our heart is bread making.

It defines us, in that it’s a simple process using simple

ingredients – flour, water, a little salt and a lot of patience

– all done on a daily basis.

Since the dawn of civilisation, folk have gathered at a

bakery and waited to get their bread. We too are a place

to gather, gossip and to be sociable. The difference –

apart from about 10,000 years – is that now you can

have a coffee as well while you wait.

Eating and drinking at the Bakery is like going to a

friend’s house so being sociable is a must. At a friend’s

house you’re expected to help yourself, not be waited on

and to eat what’s on the table.

Everything you put in your mouth in our place is

made here by us, or at the very least is supplied by a

very close friend, such as Tom’s coffee, Lorraine’s milk,

Denhay’s bacon, Peter Piper’s pork and beef

and Alison’s eggs.

STORM FORCES

W O R D S : R o s s P a c k m a n

As global climate change provokes ever more extreme metrological events around the world, the Jurassic Coast has received its fair share of tempestuous weather.

On their journeys to the far west of the peninsula, visitors to the South-West have long enjoyed the scenic views provided by the South Devon Railway line at Dawlish. Conceived by famed engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, original architect of the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge in Bristol, the line meanders its way along 13 miles of tidal waters, passing through and around the distinctive red sandstone cliffs and sea stacks of the area and providing a welcome distraction to excited holiday makers.

First opened on May 30th 1846, it was originally envisaged as an ‘atmospheric railway’, named not for its breathtaking vistas but for its novel use of differential air pressure as a form of propulsion. Amalgamated with the Great Western Railway on February 1st 1876, the South Devon Railway continued to serve as a vital transport link right into the modern era.

In February 5th 2014, following a winter of increasingly severe weather and amid widespread flooding and power outages throughout the region, a 40 metre section of protective wall succumbed to the power of the sea. After withstanding 168 years of battering by the elements, the supporting ballast was torn from beneath the line’s tracks, leaving them dangling precariously in mid-air and effectively cutting off West Devon and Cornwall train services from the rest of the country.

Mindful of the economic repercussions of this isolation, a swift response from owners Network Rail saw a 300-strong team of Network Rail engineers tasked with restoring the line. While engineering parties worked around the clock to repair the damage, a second storm arrived on the evening of February 14th, tearing away a temporary breakwater formed of shipping containers and destroying another section of sea wall.

After extensive reconstruction work, and a total outlay of £35m, the Dawlish Line was finally reopened on April 4th2014, just in time for the critical Easter holiday period and once again rejoining the western limits of the railway system to the rest of the country. The rebuild saw 600m of the historic parapet wall repaired and was estimated to have made use of 6,000 tonnes of concrete and 150 tonnes of steel. The reopening was commemorated with sticks of rock distributed at Paddington Station, underlining the essential role the line plays in the area’s provision of tourism, while Prime Minister David Cameron paid a visit to Dawlish to praise the ‘Herculean effort’ of the workers involved in the rebuild.

The line closure raised many questions about Governmental support for regional infrastructure and the vulnerability of the south west to extreme weather conditions, but more now, visitors can once again enjoy the unrivalled beauty of this most iconic of railway journeys.

No one could accuse Seaton Jurassic of having limited ambitions. It promises to take you on a trip to witness the

birth of our planet, the origins of life on Earth and to experience how the landscapes and life of today’s Jurassic Coast have come to be.

So how do you tell a story of this magnitude? Well, through timetravel, obviously! Visit Seaton Jurassic and be transported first to Victorian times, when Seaton and its surrounding coastal communities were at the World’s centre of learning about life, a place where fossil-hunters, geologists and evolutionists combined to uncover the secrets hidden in the rocks of the Jurassic Coast.

This is not an old-time museum experience. There are no glass cases with ‘do not touch’ signs at Seaton Jurassic. Instead you’ll find yourself in the drawing room of a Victorian country house. Here you’re free to explore, with maps to unfurl, fossil and rock draws to open, instruments to handle and one or two surprises along the way!

All the time you and your fellow time travellers will be getting ready for tackling the next step on your journey – back into ‘deep time’. Enter the world’s only working time ship, set the dials and turn the hand cranks and you’re off, taking flight to the Jurassic world of 200-145 million years ago where you’ll come face to face with huge marine reptiles, all here in Seaton!

Survive this and Seaton Jurassic has more in store. Feel extremely small in the giant rockpool, a place where you’ll have to adapt to survive the tides and the eyes of a fearsome pack of hungry predators. Run, hide or just become one of those species that didn’t quite make it in the long evolutionary fight for life – it’ll be for you to decide your fate!

Seaton Jurassic does have a tranquil side. Its wildlife gardens combine water play with a space to stop, look and link yourself with stories from the local landscape.

Of course, there is also a great café serving delicious local food, a gift shop and full accessibility, along with all the other things you’d want from a top attraction. As you leave Seaton Jurassic you’ll have been of a journey like no other, one that will make you see life in a different way.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Occupying an enviable position above the Exe Estuary, A la Ronde is a 18th

century National Trust-owned property with a rich and curious history, described by writer Lucinda Lambton as having ‘a magical strangeness that one might dream of only as a child’.

This quirky three-storey cottage is an oddity both inside and out. Built in 1799 for two spinster cousins, Jane and Mary Parminter, A la Ronde was designed to evoke fond memories of their grand tour of Europe.

Within its sixteen walls, inspired by the 6th century Byzantine basilica of San Vitale, the property houses an extensive collection of objects collected by the two women throughout their lives. Illuminated through the house’s diamond-shaped windows, the collection reflects both the cousin‘s artistic flair and their adventurous spirits.

Among the curios on show are a feather frieze, collected by the cousins from native game birds and chickens, as well

as countless rare artefacts including family portraits and photographs, ancient Egyptian antiquities and mysterious votive statues. In the Music Room, aspiring musicians can sit and play a tune, surrounded by oddities including Inuit models and an emu egg.

Sitting place of place in the house is the Shell Gallery, intended to resemble a seaside grotto and thought to contain nearly 25,000 shells. Due to the fragility of the feature, it has been closed to the public for over 20 years, but thanks to an interactive virtual tour, visitors to the website can now explore the intricacies of this unique display at their leisure.

Outside, the house sits in extensive, beautifully maintained gardens featuring manicured lawns, wildflower meadows and an orchard where visitors can sit and enjoy the atmosphere. The property also boasts a newly-refitted

gift shop and licensed tea rooms, offering homemade cakes and light meals. A busy schedule of events take place at A la Ronde throughout the year, including guided tours, art exhibitions and children’s activities.

A short walk from A la Ronde, the Point in View chapel was also built by the sisters and historically incorporated a girl’s school. Fittingly, it now serves as the final resting place of these two extraordinary women.

While winemaking may seem the exclusive reserve of balmy Mediterranean locales, the Jurassic Coast enjoys a temperate maritime climate equally suited to the creation of delicious traditional vintages.

A taste of the Jurassic Coast

Commanding a central location in the idyllic Axe Valley, the award-winning Lyme Bay Winery was founded by Nigel

Howard in 1992 and today is supported by a growing and diverse team of wine lovers, growers and makers. Making the most of bountiful local ingredients, the Lyme Bay Winery is dedicated to producing delicious English Wines, country wines, ciders, meads and liqueurs.

The winery’s dedicated team hand-pick nettles from around the winery hedgerows, grow elderflowers on site and tap local Birch trees for their Birch Wine. For their English Wines, Lyme Bay use grapes from 26,000 vines in affiliated vineyards within a stone’s throw of the winery, making the most of the area’s long, warm growing season.

When it comes to upholding the Jurassic Coast‘s long tradition of cider making, Lyme Bay Winery use only freshly-pressed juice from locally grown traditional cider apple varieties such as Dabinett, Kingston Black and Yarlington Mill. The passion that the Lyme Bay Winery team put into their creations is reflected in the wealth of accolades they have received, including numerous Taste of the West awards and Great Taste Producer accreditation. Many of Lyme Bay Winery’s beverages are inspired by traditional recipes, partnered with up-to-date production techniques to ensure the best of old and new.

For the chance to browse (or even sample!) their full range, Lyme Bay Winery welcome visitors to visit The Winery Shop, situated just fifteen minute’s drive west of Lyme Regis and widely signposted. As well as their own produce, Lyme Bay Winery are also proud to distribute wonderful local products from the Otter Brewery, Branscombe Vale Brewery, the Somerset Cider Brandy Company and Annings Fruit Ciders.

The Winery Shop is open 9.30am - 5.00pm Monday to Friday throughout the year, with weekend openings beginning from mid-March onwards.
