TERESA OF CALCUTTA(1910-1997)

• Commonly known as mother Teresa.• She was a Roman catholic religious sister.• Mother Teresa founded the missionaries of

charity, a roman catholic religious congregation.• Which in 2012 consisted of over 4,500 sisters

and is active in 133 countries.• They run hospices & homes for people with

HIV/AIDS, children’s & family counseling programmes etc.

• Mother Teresa was the recipient of numerous honours including the 1979 Nobel peace prize.

• In 2003 she was beatified as “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta”.

• A second miracle credited to her intercession is required before she can be recognized a saint by the catholic church.

KALPANA CHAWLA• She was born in Karnal, India.• She was the first Indian-American astronaut and first

Indian women in space.• Chawla was the first Indian-born woman and the second

Indian person to fly in space.• Her first space mission began on November 19, 1997 as

part of the six-astronaut crew that flew the space shuttle Columbia flight STS-87.

• On her first mission Chawla traveled over 10.4 million miles in 250 orbits of the earth loggin more than 375 hours in space.

SAROJINI NAIDU

• She was born in Hyderabad.• She was known as the Nightingale of India.• Naidu was an Indian independence activist and

poet.• The first women to become the governor of an

Indian state (United provinces of Agra & Oudh from 1947 to 1949).

• She was the second woman to become the president of Indian National congress in 1925.

SUZANNA ARUNDHATI ROY

• She was born in Shillong 24 November.• Rajib Roy a Bengali Hindu tea plantation manger from

Calcutta and Mary Roy a malayali Syrian Christian women’s right activist from Kerala.

• She is an Indian author who is best known for the 1998 Man Booker Prize for fiction winning novel The God of Small Things(1997).

• Which became the biggest selling book by a non expatriate Indian author.

• She is also known as political activist involved in human rights & environmental causes.

MANEKA SANJAY GANGHI

• She was born in Delhi 26 August 1956.• She is the Indian union cabinet minister for

women and child development in the government of P.M Narendra Modi.

• She is also an Animal Rights Activist, Environmentalist, and widow of the Indian Politician, Sanjay Gandhi.

• Maneka Gandhi is a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

• She was the founder editor of Surya, a political news monthly.

• Maneka married Sanjay Gandhi, the son of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on 23 September 1974.

AISWARYA RAI• She was born on 1st November 1973.• Known as Aiswarya Rai Bachhan after her

marriage.• She is an Indian actress and the winner of the

miss world pageant of 1994.• Through her successful Bollywood career, she

was established herself as one of the most popular and high-profile celebrities in India.

• Rai has recived several awards inciuding two flim fare Awards & Awarded the Padmashri by the government of India in 2009.

• She is cited in the media as the “most beautiful women in the world”.

• Rai’s off-screen roles include duties as a brand ambassador for several charity organisations.

• She is a Goodwill Ambassador for the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS.

SONIA GANDHI• Born Edvige Antonia Albina Maino, 9

December 1946.• She is an Italian-born Indian politician,who

has served as President of the Indian National Congress party since 1998.

• She is the widow of former Prime Minister of India,Rajiv Gandhi who belonged to the Nehru-Gandhi family.

• She has served as the chairperson of the ruling United Progressive Alliance in the Lok Sabha since 2004.

• In september 2010, on being re-elected for the fourth time, she became the longest serving president in the 125 year history of the congress party.

• Although sonia is the 5’th foreign-born person to be leader of the congress party, she is the first since independence in 1947.

PRATIBHA DEVISING PATIL• Born 19 December 1934.• She is an Indian politician who served as the 12’th

President of India from 2007 to 2012; she was the first woman to hold the office.

• She was sworn in as president on 25 july 2007, succeeding Abdul Kalam, after defeating her rival Bharion Sing Shekhawat.

• Patil is a member of the Indian National Congress.• Patil also taking interest in social issues such as

improving the conditions faced by Indian women.

KIRAN BEDI• Born 9 June 1949.• She is an Indian politician, social activist,

former tennis player & a retired police officer.• Bedi joined the Indian Police Service in 1972,

becoming it’s first woman officer.• After joining IPS, Bedi served in Delhi, Goa &

Mizoram.• She started her career as a Deputy

Commissioner of Police in Delhi.

• She moved to west Delhi, where she brought a reduction in crimes against women.

• In 2003, Bedi became the first woman to be appointed the United Nations civilian police adviser. She resigned in 2007.

• She has written several books & runs the India Vision Foundation.

• She was the one of the key leaders of the 2011 Indian anti-corruption movement.

SUGATHAKUMARI• Born 3 January 1934.• She is an Indian poet & activist, who has been

at the forefront of environment & feminist movements in Kerala, South India.

• She is an established writer in Malayalam with a unique voice of her own emotional empathy, humanist sensitivity & moral alertness.

• She played a big role in the Save Silent Valley protest.

• She is the founder secretary of the Prakrthi Samrakshana Samithi.

• She was the former chair person of the Kerala State Women’s Commission.

• Sugathakumari has won numerous awards & recognitions including Kerala Sahithya Akademi Award, Kendra Sahithya Akademi Award, she honoured with Padma Shri.
