Q In what Christmas TV special was Mickey Rooney the voice of Kris Kringle? —Sal King, Corpus Christi, Texas

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the stop-motion animated TV special Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, which featured the voice of Rooney as Kris Kringle, who grows up to become the man in the red suit. “I’ve done thousands of films, and everybody remembers me for that,” says Rooney, 90. “I’ve played Santa Claus a few times, but that one seems to stick.”

Q I just watched It’s a Wonderful Life for the thousandth time and wondered if any of the children in the cast went on in show business.—Richard Law, Brunswick, Ga.

All four youngsters who portrayed the children of Mary and George Bailey continued their careers in film and television. Larry Simms (Pete), now 76, had a memorable role as Baby Dumpling/Alexander in more than two dozen Blondie films. Karolyn

Grimes (Zuzu), 70, and Carol Coombs (Janie), 75, worked in other movies as adolescents but left show business behind before

entering adulthood. Jimmy Hawkins (Tommy), 69, co-starred in the 1950s TV series Annie Oakley and later became a producer.

Q I recently saw Andy Williams in Branson, Mo., and he had a wonderful show. Where was he born and how many children does he have?—June Mueller, Sullivan, Mo.

Williams, 83, the pop singer known for his Christmas specials in the 1960s and ’70s, was born in Wall Lake, Iowa. He has three children, Noelle, Christian and Robert. His annual Christmas shows at his Moon River Theatre are a hallmark of the holiday season in Branson and usually begin in November and run through mid-December.

Q Can you tell me whatever happened to Burl Ives, who did those great voices and songs in several Christmas specials?—Ron Clemens, Council Bluffs, Iowa

Ives is best known to TV audiences for his jovial vocals as Sam the Snowman in the classic Christmas special Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer, which debuted in 1964 and has been rebroadcast around the holidays nearly every year since. He recorded many albums, and his folk ballads, such as “The Blue-Tail Fly,” sold millions over the decades. And his version of “A Holly Jolly Christmas” has become a perennial favorite. He retired from music and movies in the late 1980s and died in 1995 at 85.

BattleshipThe naval warfare-type guessing game was devised in the early 1900s by Clifford Von Wickler. Called Salvo in 1931, the game originally was played with paper and pencils. Milton Bradley Co. released the game as Broadsides: The Game of Naval Strategy in 1943 and as Battleship in 1967, when plastic grid boards, ships and pegs were introduced so players could easily record hits and misses. During the game, two players secretly arrange a fleet of 10 ships—aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, submarines and destroyers—on the lettered and numbered grids. Players take turns targeting their opponent’s fleet by guessing coordinates where the hidden ships are positioned. The battle ends when one player’s entire fleet is sunk.

Candy LandEleanor Abbott created the “sweet, little game” in the 1940s while recovering from polio in a San Diego hospital. The color-matching game, she surmised, would allow young children with the disease to entertain themselves. More than 40 million Candy Lands have

LONG BEFORE PlayStation, Wii and interactive computer games, families gathered around the kitchen table and entertained themselves with games such as Monopoly, Scrabble and Trivial Pursuit. Here’s a look at the origins of and interesting facts about 10 of the most popular board games of all time.

CheckersThe oldest board games in the world, checkers and its more sophisticated cousin, chess, originated in the Middle East during ancient times. Checkers, called draughts in England, involves two players, each with 12 pieces or checkers, who jump over their opponent’s pieces and remove them from a square “checked” board. Alex Moiseyev, 50, of Dublin, Ohio, has reigned as world checker champion since 2002 and is among the all-time greatest players of the game, according to the American Checker Federation.

ClueOriginally called Cleudo, the murder-mystery board game was created by Englishman Anthony E. Pratt in the 1940s. The object is for players to collect clues and to deduce which of six characters—Col. Mustard, Miss Scarlett, Mrs. Peacock, Mrs. White, Professor Plum or the Rev. Green—murdered Dr. Black with what weapon—candlestick, lead pipe, knife, revolver, rope or wrench—and in what room of his country mansion—ballroom, billiard room, conservatory, dining room, hall, kitchen, library, lounge or study. The first player to correctly identify the murderer, type of weapon and site of the crime wins the game.

MonopolyThe best-selling board game in history began in 1904 as The Landlord’s Game. Elizabeth Magie, of Brentwood, Md., created the real estate game to illustrate the social injustices of slumlords and corporate monopolies. However, the game that allows players to get “rich” by buying properties with phony money didn’t gain widespread popularity until the Great Depression. In the 1930s, Charles Darrow, an unemployed salesman in Germantown, Pa., modified Magie’s game, renamed it Monopoly and sold 5,000 copies to

a Philadelphia department store. Since Parker Brothers bought the rights in 1935, more than 200 million sets have been sold in 103 countries and 37 languages.

OperationIn 1962, John Spinello, an industrial design student at the University of Illinois, built an electric toy that allowed players to probe holes in a metal box with a metal rod. If a player touched the side of a hole, a loud bell sounded. The toy evolved into the 1965 game of Operation, in which surgeon wannabes test their steadiness by plucking 12 body parts and ailments—Adam’s Apple, Broken Heart, Charley Horse, Funny Bone, Spare Ribs, Writer’s Cramp, etc.—from a prone patient, Cavity Sam, with a set of tweezers. Players without a steady hand trigger a buzzer and light a bulb beneath Sam’s red nose.

RiskCreated by French filmmaker Albert Lamorissee in 1957, the war strategy game originally was released as La Conquete du Monde, or Conquest of the World. In 1959, Parker Brothers published Risk, an English language version. During the game, up to six players amass armies on a political map of the world and attempt to capture territories and continents from other players by rolling dice. The game ends when one player eliminates his adversaries and rules the world.

ScrabbleAlfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect from Poughkeepsie, N.Y., invented the word game during the Great Depression when he combined the element of chance with the vocabulary skills required for crossword puzzles. During the game, each player draws seven lettered tiles from a pool of 100 and scores points by forming words on a puzzle grid. More than 100 million sets have been sold since Scrabble was introduced in 1949, and more than 200 tournaments are sanctioned each year by the North American Scrabble Players Association.

The Game of LifeThe Game of Life began in 1860 as The Checkered Game of Life. Developed by board game pioneer Milton Bradley, the game originally was played on a modified checkerboard and conveyed a moral message as players advanced through virtues and vices—ambition, crime, bravery, gambling, honor, idleness, matrimony, prison, poverty and wealth—encountered from infancy to “happy old age.” In 1959, game inventor Reuben Klamer redesigned The Checkered Game of Life for the 100th anniversary of the Milton Bradley Co. The result was The Game of Life, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year.

Trivial PursuitCanadian journalists Scott Abbott and Chris Haney conceived the popular board game in 1979 after discovering pieces missing from the Scrabble game they were playing. In the original “Genius” edition of Trivial Pursuit, players advance on a wheel-shaped course by correctly answering randomly selected questions in six categories: arts and literature, entertainment, history, geography, science and nature, and sports and leisure. Trivial Pursuit spawned numerous other trivia games and dozens of editions, including the 25th anniversary edition in 2008. More than 90 million copies have been sold in 17 languages and in 26 countries. ★

IT’S EASY to take our eyes for granted.Because they’re not like faces or teeth that

need a scrub in the morning, most of us do little besides open our peepers to take in the sights. Still, eyes need attention and care to stay healthy. Low vision or blindness affects 3.3 million Americans age 40 and over, and that number is expected to reach 5.5 million by 2020, according to the Archives of Ophthalmology.

Here are tips for keeping your eyes and vision in shape.

Have regular eye exams. From age 18 to 60, get an eye exam every two years. At age 60 and older, see the eye doctor yearly, says Dr. William Trattler, an ophthalmologist at the Center for Excellence in Eye Care in Miami, Fla. The exam should include a standard eye chart test; an eye pressure test to detect glaucoma, a disease that damages the optic nerve and that, untreated, can lead to blindness; and pupil dilation to examine your retinas for signs of diseases such as diabetic retinopathy—damage to the small blood vessels in the retina. The doctor also will test your range of vision and your pupils’ reaction to light.

Eye exams can be conducted either by an optometrist, a health care professional

trained to examine, diagnose and treat the eye, or an ophthalmologist, a physician who specializes in both medical and surgical care of eyes.

Wear sunglasses. Choose sunglasses that block 100 percent of ultraviolet rays, which can lead to eye or eyelid cancer, an inflamed cornea, or cataracts, a cloudy covering over the eye’s lens that often develops in adults over age 60. And get out your broad-rimmed hat to help shield eyes from the sun, says Dr. Susan Resnick, an optometrist in New York City. If you wear contact lenses, get ones that have UV inhibitors, which also block UV rays.

Wear safety goggles. Calling woodworkers, metalsmiths, racquetball players and weekend warriors: Put goggles on before you plug in machines or get the ball bouncing. “Any time objects could fly, wear goggles,” Trattler says.

If you’re diabetic, control your blood sugar. “That is the most critical component to preventing retinal damage from diabetes,” Resnick says. Also, see an eye doctor at least

yearly, and ask your doctor to test your A1C ratio—a measure of the amount of sugar in your blood over a three-month period; diabetics should aim for a reading below 7.0, Resnick says.

Never sleep in your contacts. “If you do, the risk for infections increases twentyfold,” Trattler says. “When you sleep in your contacts, there’s a lack of oxygen to the cornea, which can damage the eye’s surface and lead to infection.”

Eat an eye-healthy diet. Eat lots of fruits and vegetables, especially dark green, leafy vegetables. Fruits and vegetables contain

antioxidants and the nutrient lutein, which may help prevent macular degeneration, a disease of the retina that can result in loss of central vision; they may help prevent cataracts as well. Also, eat fatty fish, such as salmon, at least twice a week. “They contain omega-3 fatty acids that also protect against macular degeneration,” Trattler says.

For extra protection, you can take a daily multivitamin that contains lutein and a daily omega-3 fatty acid supplement, following package dose recommendations. Ask your doctor if these supplements would be beneficial.

Quit smoking. “Smoking is a primary risk factor for macular degeneration,” Resnick says. Clogged blood vessels become more likely too, possibly blocking blood to the eye—a kind of stroke that can lead to blindness. Smoking also damages blood vessels, including those that nourish eye tissues and nerves, and is associated with dry eye, a condition that decreases the tear fluid protecting your eyes.

Take a computer break. “People staring at a computer don’t blink as much as usual, and that can lead to dry eye, blurry vision and fatigue,” Trattler says. The solution: Slip away from your computer every hour or two for a few minutes so your blink rate goes back to normal.

Don’t rub. It hurts to get debris in your eyes. But rubbing can damage the eye’s surface, says Trattler. “Instead, flush your eye with water and see your eye doctor.” ★

RESTASIS® (cyclosporine ophthalmic emulsion) 0.05% Sterile, Preservative-Free

INDICATIONS AND USAGE RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion is indicated to increase tear production in patients whose tear production is presumed to be suppressed due to ocular inflammation associated with keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Increased tear production was not seen in patients currently taking topical anti-inflammatory drugs or using punctal plugs.

CONTRAINDICATIONS RESTASIS® is contraindicated in patients with active ocular infections and in patients with known or suspected hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients in the formulation.

WARNING RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion has not been studied in patients with a history of herpes keratitis.

PRECAUTIONS General: For ophthalmic use only.

Information for Patients The emulsion from one individual single-use vial is to be used immediately after opening for administration to one or both eyes, and the remaining contents should be discarded immediately after administration.

Do not allow the tip of the vial to touch the eye or any surface, as this may contaminate the emulsion.

RESTASIS® should not be administered while wearing contact lenses. Patients with decreased tear produc tion typically should not wear contact lenses. If contact lenses are worn, they should be removed prior to the administration of the emulsion. Lenses may be reinserted 15 minutes following administration of RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion.

Carcinogenesis, Mutagenesis, and Impairment of Fertility Systemic carcinogenicity studies were carried out in male and female mice and rats. In the 78-week oral (diet) mouse study, at doses of 1, 4, and 16 mg/kg/day, evidence of a statistically significant trend was found for lymphocytic lymphomas in females, and the incidence of hepatocellular carcinomas in mid-dose males significantly exceeded the control value.

In the 24-month oral (diet) rat study, conducted at 0.5, 2, and 8 mg/kg/day, pancreatic islet cell adenomas significantly exceeded the control rate in the low dose level. The hepatocellular carcinomas and pancreatic islet cell adenomas were not dose related. The low doses in mice and rats are approximately 1000 and 500 times greater, respectively, than the daily human dose of one drop (28 μL) of 0.05% RESTASIS® BID into each eye of a 60 kg person (0.001 mg/kg/day), assuming that the entire dose is absorbed.

Cyclosporine has not been found mutagenic/genotoxic in the Ames Test, the V79-HGPRT Test, the micronu cleus test in mice and Chinese hamsters, the chromosome-aberration tests in Chinese hamster bone-marrow, the mouse dominant lethal assay, and the DNA-repair test in sperm from treated mice. A study analyzing sister chromatid exchange (SCE) induction by cyclosporine using human lymphocytes in vitro gave indication of a positive effect (i.e., induction of SCE).

No impairment in fertility was demonstrated in studies in male and female rats receiving oral doses of cyclosporine up to 15 mg/kg/day (approximately 15,000 times the human daily dose of 0.001 mg/kg/day) for 9 weeks (male) and 2 weeks (female) prior to mating.

Pregnancy-Teratogenic Effects Pregnancy category C.

Teratogenic Effects: No evidence of teratogenicity was observed in rats or rabbits receiving oral doses of cyclosporine up to 300 mg/kg/day during organogenesis. These doses in rats and rabbits are approximately 300,000 times greater than the daily human dose of one drop (28 μL) 0.05% RESTASIS® BID into each eye of a 60 kg person (0.001 mg/kg/day), assuming that the entire dose is absorbed.

Non-Teratogenic Effects: Adverse effects were seen in reproduction studies in rats and rabbits only at dose levels toxic to dams. At toxic doses (rats at 30 mg/kg/day and rabbits at 100 mg/kg/day), cyclosporine oral solution, USP, was embryo- and fetotoxic as indicated by increased pre- and postnatal mortality and reduced fetal weight together with related skeletal retardations. These doses are 30,000 and 100,000 times greater, respectively than the daily human dose of one-drop (28 μL) of 0.05% RESTASIS® BID into each eye of a 60 kg person (0.001 mg/kg/day), assuming that the entire dose is absorbed. No evidence of embryofetal tox icity was observed in rats or rabbits receiving cyclosporine at oral doses up to 17 mg/kg/day or 30 mg/kg/day, respectively, during organogenesis. These doses in rats and rabbits are approximately 17,000 and 30,000 times greater, respectively, than the daily human dose.

Offspring of rats receiving a 45 mg/kg/day oral dose of cyclosporine from Day 15 of pregnancy until Day 21 post partum, a maternally toxic level, exhibited an increase in postnatal mortality; this dose is 45,000 times greater than the daily human topical dose, 0.001 mg/kg/day, assuming that the entire dose is absorbed. No adverse events were observed at oral doses up to 15 mg/kg/day (15,000 times greater than the daily human dose).

There are no adequate and well-controlled studies of RESTASIS® in pregnant women. RESTASIS® should be administered to a pregnant woman only if clearly needed.

Nursing Mothers Cyclosporine is known to be excreted in human milk following systemic administration but excretion in human milk after topical treatment has not been investigated. Although blood concentrations are undetectable after topical administration of RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion, caution should be exercised when RESTASIS® is administered to a nursing woman.

Pediatric Use The safety and efficacy of RESTASIS® ophthalmic emulsion have not been established in pediatric patients below the age of 16.

Geriatric Use No overall difference in safety or effectiveness has been observed between elderly and younger patients.

ADVERSE REACTIONS The most common adverse event following the use of RESTASIS® was ocular burning (17%).

Other events reported in 1% to 5% of patients included conjunctival hyperemia, discharge, epiphora, eye pain, foreign body sensation, pruritus, stinging, and visual disturbance (most often blurring).

White GingerbreadThis version of an old favorite omits molasses and includes ginger in three forms (crystallized, dried and fresh) to create a delicious, chewy brownie-like cake.

Cooking spray 1/3 cup butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 teaspoon ground ginger 2 teaspoons finely grated fresh ginger

1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom 1 cup all-purpose flour 1 teaspoon baking powder 1 ounce crystallized ginger, chopped 1 teaspoon raw sugar or

granulated sugar 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350F. Coat an 11-by-7-inch baking dish with cooking spray.2. Combine butter and sugar in a large mixing bowl; beat with a mixer until fluffy. Beat in eggs, vanilla, ground and fresh ginger, and cardamom.3. Sift together flour and baking powder. Add to butter mixture and beat well. Scrape into prepared pan. Sprinkle crystallized ginger pieces over batter.4. Combine raw sugar and cinnamon and sprinkle over batter. Bake 25 to 35 minutes. The cake will be chewy, golden and fragrant, and an inserted toothpick will test clean.

JOHN MCGUIRK, 67, yanks the starter rope on a shiny, gold-colored 1962 Polaris Autoboggan, and the snowmobile’s 10-horsepower, gasoline-powered engine sputters to life. Smiling broadly, McGuirk hops aboard the motorized sled, pushes the throttle stick forward and points the machine’s two front skis toward the snow-covered field behind his house in Sidney, Ohio (pop. 20,211).

“He cracks me up,” says Jan McGuirk, 67, as she watches her husband gradually accelerate to the snowmobile’s top speed of 7 mph. “He’s just like a little kid.”

The Autoboggan is one of more than 140 antique and vintage snowmobiles that McGuirk has collected—and among 65 that he’s lovingly repaired or restored—since 1972. The retired General Motors manager has devoted thousands of hours rebuilding blown engines,

sandblasting rusted chassis, and replacing torn vinyl seats, broken rubber tracks and cracked windshields on snowmobile models from the past, such as Big Boss, Double Eagle, Snow Go, Ski-Bird and SnoWolf.

“I get a lot of satisfaction taking something that looks like a piece of junk and bringing it back to its original condition,” says McGuirk, president of the Antique Snowmobile Club of America. “That’s the fun for me.”

Most of McGuirk’s snowmobiles, which date from 1960 to 1971, are housed in a 30-by-110-foot metal shed behind his house, and 20 are displayed at the Top of the Lake Snowmobile Museum in Naubinway, Mich. McGuirk and a group of fellow snowmobile enthusiasts founded the museum in 2007 to showcase their vintage and antique machines, and to preserve the history of snowmobiling.

“John does a great job of restoring the old sleds,” says Charlie Vallier, 60, the museum’s chairman. “He’s got one of the largest collections of antique snowmobiles” built in 1968 or earlier.

The McGuirks’ love affair with snowmobiles began a few years after they married in 1966. John, who grew up in Paducah, Ky., and moved to Michigan as a teenager to work at General Motors, wasn’t particularly fond of the cold, snowy winters of the upper Midwest. That is, until he and Jan discovered the joy of snowmobiling.

“It was something that got us outside in the winter,” McGuirk recalls. “And we’ve been out there ever since.”

The McGuirks bought a new Chaparral snowmobile in 1972, and they soon bought a second one so they could snowmobile together. McGuirk fell in love with the machines, and when a neighbor offered to sell him a 1962 Polaris SnoTraveler that same year, he gladly paid $150 for the rundown sled.

“I had to get the motor running, to put in a windshield and seat,” he recalls of his first snowmobile restoration. “Fixing it up was fun.”

Nowadays, in addition to performing snow machine makeovers, McGuirk enjoys hauling his vintage sleds to winter festivals and snowmobile shows in Michigan, Minnesota and Wisconsin, and riding them with other snowmobile enthusiasts.

While McGuirk would love to find and restore a 1950s Bosak Power Toboggan, or own a rare Eliason Motor Toboggan—the first commercial snowmobile designed and built by Carl Eliason, of Sayner, Wis., in 1924—he’s content restoring, riding and showing the many classic and uncommon machines already in his collection.

“I’m happy to restore the ones I’ve got,” he says. “I’ve got enough to keep me busy the rest of my life.” ★
