GUIDES
Darling Downs&
The city of Toowoomba is a modern provincial capital boasting beautiful heritage buildings proudly mixed with modern, dynamic architecture. The Toowoomba region offers a wide range of attraction options for the curious traveller.Perched on the edge of the Great Dividing Range and 700 metres above sea level, Toowoomba is renowned for its architecture and open spaces that overlook the Lockyer Valley. One of the city’s famous vantage points is Picnic Point Park and Lookout where you can explore the graded walks along the range escarpment, or sit back, relax and take in the view.
Toowoomba is Queensland’s Garden City, with more than 150 public parks and gardens. In spring, the gardens are an extravaganza of colour and the city celebrates with the Toowoomba Carnival of Flowers, held each year in the last week of September.
From mid–January to mid–February the city is again ablaze with f loral colour. From March to May mellow tints of red and gold mark the autumn showing, when you can walk through Queens Park amongst the blanket of fallen oak and willow leaves.
You might enjoy taking a relaxing stroll through one of the many beautiful parks filled with colourful blooms such as: Laurel Bank Park and its Scented Garden - designed for the visually impaired; Queens Park Gardens; Lake Annand with its New Zealand themed gardens; and the University of Southern Queensland’s Japanese Garden (Ju Raku En).
Toowoomba’s history has been preserved in its buildings. The magnificently restored art deco Empire Theatre attracts regular performances. A well signposted drive for visitors will take you past the city’s finest architecture and the historic Russell Street precinct.
A visit to the Cobb+Co Museum is a must, which features the National Carriage Collection - Australia’s finest collection of horse-drawn vehicles - and The Factory where you can join a workship in heritage trades.

Toowoomba
From boutique wineries, galleries and museums to rugged national parks, spectacular lookouts and stunning gardens, there’s plenty to see and do in Toowoomba and Darling Downs.Toowoomba, perched on the Great Dividing Range, is the hub of the Darling Downs and is a fresh and exhilarating destination. Just an hour and a half west of Brisbane, this city is steeped in heritage and natural beauty.
It’s estimated that Toowoomba has more than 160,000 residents, all of whom enjoy the comforts, conveniences and facilities of this large regional city, which boasts great shopping, heritage, art and culinary experiences.
Surrounding Toowoomba, the greater Darling Downs area features a vast array of experiences for the visitor. Driving west through the Darling Downs will lead to rolling plains and little rural townships dotted over the countryside, where you can chat with a local or
retreat to a cosy dinner with a bottle of local wine. Heading north towards Crows Nest, you will pass through hamlets strung along the eastern escarpment of the Great Dividing Range, sprinkled with national parks, walking trails, lakes and leisure activities, cafes, museums and galleries.
The southern fringes of the Darling Downs are most widely recognised as Steele Rudd country, renowned for its authentic country experiences. This unique offshoot of the Great Divide features dense rainforest, waterfalls, walking tracks, lookouts, abundant fauna and the largest remaining stand of bunya pines anywhere. Pilton, 35kms south of Toowoomba, boasts the Darling Downs Zoo, which is an attraction the whole family can enjoy.

BRISBANEBrisbane WestWellcamp Airport
Brisbane WestWellcamp AirportWith the ingenuity and foresight of the local Wagner family, Toowoomba is now sky’s the limit with its new Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport. Opened in November 2014, travellers to the region can now fly directly to Toowoomba via Sydney from anywhere on the global Qantas or Emirates networks.
QantasLink offers double daily services between Wellcamp and Sydney, and a direct Melbourne service will potentially be available soon. Services between Wellcamp and Western Queensland provided by Regional Express (REX) offered people in remote areas better connectivity to city services and facilities, with many families making a regular trip for health and education reasons.
The airport is located just 17kms west of the Toowoomba CBD, with taxis, hire cars and shuttle bus services meeting all f lights. Altitude Bar and Café at Wellcamp Airport is fast becoming a sought-after event venue, with outstanding food and service in an architecturally impressive building boasting views to the aircraft apron.
For more information on the airport, please visit www.wellcamp.com.au.
For golfing enthusiasts, City Golf Club in Toowoomba boasts an 18 hole course in picturesque surrounds. Located at 254 South Street, the club also offers dining and entertainment. Toowoomba boasts 70kms of cycling paths, which provide plenty of opportunity to explore the region. Try the Caledonian Estate Ride or Wetlands Ride to get started. The Toowoomba Cycling Criterium Track located at the Toowoomba Showgrounds features a 1.76km undulating circuit which provides something for both recreational riders and the more serious cyclist visiting the region.
Museums& GalleriesThe Darling Downs’ galleries and heritage exhibitions are focal points of rural history and memorabilia, from woolsheds to Steele Rudd (author of the ‘Dad & Dave’ stories), antiques and contemporary art. Check out the iconic Cobb+Co Museum, catch an exhibition at the Toowoomba Regional Art Gallery or browse the vast collection of vehicles at the Queensland Auto Museum in Hampton.
Fishing& CampingToowoomba and Darling Downs offer a number of top fishing spots for the keen angler. Lakes Cressbrook and Cooby both support a combination of stocked and naturally occurring fish, including Murray cod, silver perch and eel-tailed catfish. For the enthusiastic camper, there are full camping facilities available near the water’s edge at Lake Cressbrook. There are also many camping hot spots throughout Darling Downs, including Crows Nest National Park.
RegionalToursThe High Country Drive is a half day tour that encompasses the Ravensbourne and Crows Nest National Parks. The Open Plains Country Drive is an afternoon drive that will take you to Pittsworth Historical Village and the Westbrook Gallery. Alternatively, you can venture along the Great Bunya Mountain Drive, which features the Bunya Mountains National Park, Dalby Pioneer Park Museum and Jondaryan Woolshed. And finally, the Steele Rudd Country Drive is a half day drive that traverses the countryside to Sister Kenny Museum and Rudd’s Hut.

Following the New England Highway, you will find yourself meandering along the escarpment of the Great Dividing Range through quaint and charming towns.
To the east is the spectacular view of the escarpment country to the coast, west is the rich and rolling country of the Darling Downs, and to the north is the outlook to the Bunya Mountains.
Sunday drivers or overnight visitors have access to a veritable playground of unique experiences and natural beauty. Take a scenic drive through the welcoming villages of Highfields, Cabarlah, Geham, Hampton, Ravensbourne, Pechey, Haden and Crows Nest. Be tempted to stop off and discover the many enticing attractions such as specialist nurseries, gourmet cafés, antique stores, weekend markets, the Spring Bluff Historic Railway Station, 4x4 trails, fine art galleries and folk museums.
The area has two National Parks - Ravensbourne
and Crows Nest - with walking tracks, picnic spots and lookouts for your enjoyment. Lakes Cooby and Cressbrook are ideal locations for water sport activities, camping, fishing and boating.
If you enjoy birdwatching, bushwalking, sailing or fishing then you will find plenty to keep you entertained while breathing the fresh high country air and enjoying the great outdoors.
The region is known for its abundant birdlife and has an active birding community which has compiled brochures and extensive bird lists. There are many sites around to spot birds and the Crows Nest National Park and Ravensbourne National Park are alive with wildlife. You can relax and enjoy a picnic at Beutel’s Lookout at Ravensbourne National Park having the best vantage point of the escarpment country and the plains of the Lockyer Valley.
